Stepping forward, Chu-e bullied his way into howard slayte's space. A foot nestled firmly on the ground between the other man's legs, the brush of fabric on skin. Not enough to press or be forceful, just for Chu-e to be too close. A hand is lifted to cup the broken side of Howard's face, to pull his face gently to the side.[break][break]

There, as well, Chu-e leaned in. Not for a kiss, but to press cheek to cheek and whisper warm and soft in the other's ear.[break][break]

"It forgot that I always looked back. It forgot I know how to kill it."[break][break]

His eyes flick upwards to something over Howard's shoulder. Chu-e turns his head to press the quickest of pecks behind the other's ear, then pull back and out of the other's space as suddenly as he had entered it. Like earlier, his face was flushed and innocent; a mask for the public, not for Howard.[break][break]

"Howie! Will you show me where the plushies are? I want to get us that cute set they advertised." Sweet, a little too loud. Chu-e reaches for the other's hand to tangle together, eyelashes fluttering.

When Chu-e says it, there is a sharpness to his gaze. A razor's edge, a threat, a warning. It was no secret that Eris was his daughter. But that howard slayte seemed to know her name on a more familiar turn made his skin prick. It was not so dissimilar to when Isaac Merlo had come through his window.[break][break]

I will still kill for her. I did not give her up willingly. is what that look whispered.[break][break]

But it passes into something else, more carefully neutral. Chu-e wasn't allowing Howard to see his reactions to this conversation anymore. Not for the moment.[break][break]

"I couldn't let him get away with locking her up in his basement again."[break][break]

But that is smoothed past with little more than a twitch of the cheek.[break][break]

"It's hard to explain. But, you know that feeling when someone stares at you? It was in the back of my mind, and it was that feeling... constantly. I was as aware of it being there as it was of me. Always probing, always hoping for a moment of weakness to try and seize me. Break me. After I died, after it got what it wanted, it didn't care about me anymore. It didn't look."

Chu-e could still remember what it was like to be bonded. He never worked with it on it's request. Necrozma had only ever taken from him. Taken his body, taken his emotions, taken his relationships, taken his will to carry on. It had worked so hard to use him. Just like everyone else in his life up to this point.[break][break]

It shouldn't have hurt so bad to think about.[break][break]

"Would it upset you if I did?"[break][break]

Chu-e asks back, unable to resist. The question only lingers in the air for a few moments before Chu-e shakes his head, not actually wanting the answer.[break][break]

"No. I was fighting MATIAS SILPH. He was trying to kidnap Eris Halla. Then I felt a sharp pain in my skull and I was gone. I don't know what actually happened but I think my disease caught up to me. When I woke back up, I had lost over a year. They wished me back to life and Necrozma was still inside of me, but it didn't look at me anymore."

"I like to cook."[break][break]

Chu-e takes another small bite of his sandwich, chews over the idea of revealing a card to jayden cross as much as he does his food. In the end, it seems safe. Cooking was mundane enough to not be used against him in any meaningful way. Especially not by Jayden, of all people.[break][break]

"I learned while I was recovering after my hospital stay in Kalos. I couldn't leave the house very often, got tired too fast, and with so many dietary restrictions... I got frustrated with reading the backs of packages to see what was safe for me to eat. So I started looking up how to make stuff myself. I ended up really liking it."[break][break]

The words almost seem to slip out on their own, too easy past his teeth. Chu-e shuts himself up by getting a long drink of his juice. Instead, he watches as Jayden enjoys one of the sweets he had made.[break][break]

"Messy." Teased, softly.[break][break]

Jayden cleans himself up but a stray smudge of whipped cream stays on his cheek. Before thinking much about it, Chu-e leans in close and wipes it clean with thumb. He only seems to realize the brush of skin as he leans back, face freezing as the very slightest of pink colors his cheeks.

Chu-e can almost taste the frost on jayden cross's breath when he speaks.[break][break]

He closes his eyes and breaths in deeply. Still in quiet even as he is gripped in trembling hands, is shaken by fragile words.[break][break]

Slowly, Chu-e raises his hands up to cup Jayden's where he grips. Cold, but not as cold as Jayden's touch. A slow, steady breath in preparation to rip off this particular bandage.[break][break]

"Jayden Cross. You need to get over me." Chu-e's gentleness, the edging around whatever this was- it's brought to a standstill. It chokes and rips at his own heart as he says it. A squeeze of jealousy against fern delaney, someone he has never met. Yet, this was the right thing to do.[break][break]

Chu-e opens his eyes again and they brim with emotion. But they are hard and flinty, not the pathetic mirrors he allows others to see. Only his own. Only Chu-e Choi. Only the man who made Cinnabar's sea bleed.[break][break]

"Even if you loved me. Even if I do love you. You have someone better for you.[break][break]

His words are harsh. They are firm. They are not unkind. Chu-e squeezes jayden cross's hand with force.[break][break]

"I married Arthur and got him murdered. I tore Leon to pieces for fun. Jayden, what do you think would have happened if we were ever more serious than a series of fleeting glances and a stolen kiss? I'm a terrible person who can't be fixed by sweet words or good intentions. I would have loved you too hard and ruined you just like I do everyone else. Get. Over. Me."

Chu-e gives the other a raised brow, a small and impish grin. It's the most he's felt like himself since he tried to make Cillian Quinn laugh in that lab. Since he became second fiddle to some parasite who used his body like a fucking meat mecha.[break][break]

There is an allegory for his past hidden in there. If only Chu-e cared to find it. He thinks it might make him laugh.[break][break]

But, Chu-e only sighs when howard slayte answers and opens his mouth. Tongue out, he presses a finger halfway down his throat and make an exaggerated 'bleh!' noise.[break][break]

"It's always legendary pokemon! I get so tired of hearing about them. One of them decides to cause a problem, finds some nice Avatar to settle down with, and then you never hear from it again. I swear, it's all some big show for them! I bet this weird vessel just wants some humussy like the rest of them. Fucking drama queens. Force your company on someone till you convince them to settle for you like the rest of us!"[break][break]

Chu-e throws up their hands and steps away from the desk during the little rant. An ear piece if swiped from their pocket and popped in; a quick click and Howard might realize that his own is synced to it.[break][break]

"I'm going to do a sweep. Call for backup if I'm not back in ten."

For the values of Necrozma's simplicity, Chu-e just gives a half hearted shrug. The thing was alien and complicated. It was also still, for all intents of purposes, a living creature. The lack of emotions had been easier for Chu-e to deal with than expected. Sociopathy had it's benefits.[break][break]

"No, but I know he must be stupid as hell and really pathetic to accept any of the shit it offered him." Zev Harcourt is a fool in Chu-e's mind, even though he does not know him.[break][break]

"It whispered in my ear for years. Honeyed intentions and words. When I tuned it out, it grew hostile and tried to force me. It only succeeded because I died. From something it didn't even cause! Pathetic thing." A shake of the head, more disgust curling from their tongue.[break][break]

A soft breath as Chu-e forces an exhale.[break][break]

"It's just going to use him to make more of... it. That's all I was in the end; an egg sac. That's all he'll end up being too, no matter what it tells him."

Any disgust absent from howard slayte's face finds it's way into Chu-e's voice when he speaks.[break][break]

"I was not-" Hot, forceful, and acidic as he speaks. "it's Avatar."[break][break]

'Avatar' curls from Chu-e's lips like a curse. Like any connection to the word was less than shit you found on the bottom of your shoe.[break][break]

"I was it's mother."[break][break]

The correction is bitter.[break][break]

"It's hungry. It wants to eat... everything."[break][break]

A pause, Chu-e glancing down at the discolored nails again before their eyes flick back up to Howard. A sort of wariness and suspicion.[break][break]

"Why?" But Chu-e doesn't give Howard time to answer, an understanding flashing on his face that is followed by a sneer.[break][break]

"Whoever it infected after me- they were stupid enough to let it in their mind, weren't they?"

Quiet, not even chiding. It's almost filled with something like pity or remorse.[break][break]

Chu-e releases their grip and pulls their hand back. Draws a hand up to start picking at the nail bed. Slowly, pink paint is scraped and chipped away.[break][break]

Underneath, dark black sheen. Small flecks of rainbow that catch in the light, just like the real thing. Only, this is not crystal. It is just a remnant. A reminder of how Chu-e was forced to change. Black nails instead of white.[break][break]

After allowing howard slayte a look, they pull the hand back and tuck it into the pocket of their sweater, as if to hide the shame.[break][break]

"I have to kill it. For what it took from me. For what it wants."

The chill of fear passes... then surges back once more. It makes their fingers shake. This is quickly hidden in balled up fists, hands and elbows pulled close to the chest.[break][break]

It didn't feel natural.[break][break]

"You talk like you're in a poem sometimes. It's cute."[break][break]

It's said in a breathy, shaking rush. Unclear if it's just a joke or some genuine compliment ripped out of Chu-e's core. They close their eyes and try to count backwards from twenty until the fear leaks out of them.[break][break]

It feels hollow after.[break][break]

Chu-e flicks the picture with the footprints and releases a breath they didn't realize they were holding.[break][break]

"If this is some more Legendary Pokemon bullshit I'll puke." This one a clear half joke, unfriendly. They nod their head for howard slayte to continue.

AZ EXCURSION A (CHOI VS NAVY)

thread summary: Having wandered away from their post and getting lost, Chu-e ends up encountering E4 member Michael Navidson. Navy has more than a few bones to pick with Chu-e for his negligence of Eris Halla, but the two manage to come to an understanding. Only time will tell if Chu-e was being honest or just filling Navy's ass full of hot air.[break]

why is it important?: For two distinct reasons I really like this thread. One is OOC and one is IC. For a long time I've struggled with my muse for Chu-e and where to go with him as a character. A lot of his past connections and plot points made it hard for me to really enjoy writing him, leading to his personality feeling like a shell of what it was. IC that kind of translated to him being depressed. While he has slowly been gaining back his will to live from numerous encounters with others both inside and outside of Rocket, this is one of the first threads where some fire is really being put back into his chest. In time, I'm hoping to use such interactions to have him be full of life again (even if his body resists that).

"And lies are poison." Chu-e answers smartly back.[break][break]

And they would know, since they dealt in both.[break][break]

"Nothing's indestructible. We'll just have to keep trying." Chu-e was livelier today than usual. Yet that particular statement had a bit more heat to it than they normal showed. [break][break]

Memories boiled to the surface as Chu-e looked at the crystals. Of sitting in a bathtub and frantically rubbing at black crystal growths. The chemical cocktail they had made burned the exposed skin. They would step out chapped and bleeding and clawed raw from their own fingers.[break][break]

It sticks in the back of their mind.[break][break]

Eyes were locked onto one picture of the crystals- when they snapped out of the trap of their own mind, it was snatched up.[break][break]

"What's this?"[break][break]

They point to a smudged puddle next to the deposit. A few small holes in an odd pattern. Foot prints.[break][break]

Looking at them, Chu-e felt a shiver of fear run down their spine.

Disbelief is met with confusion.[break][break]

But Chu-e keeps lips sealed when howard slayte tilts his chin upwards. The last times someone had touched them like this, it had been for a kiss. Now, it is to be inspected. Like a cow on stage before slaughter, ever ounce of skin mulled over in careful detail. He wonders if Howard is pleased with the marbling of fat in the flesh. If he would bother sinking his own teeth into the tender meat or if it would be chopped up scraps for fighting dogs.[break][break]

Blue lifts to meet the other's single eye.[break][break]

Chu-e is steady and empty as they are examined, not shying their eyes away from examining the other just as closely. Their skin is cold and soft; the smell of moisturizer not quite hiding the distinct scent of medicine that clings to his person.[break][break]

Then the touch is over.[break][break]

But before Howard can fully retract his hand, Chu-e snatches the other's wrist with an unexpected swiftness. The grip is weak and frail, but manicured nails pinch into skin. There is a black sheen under the pink polish.[break][break]

"The only thing I want is to kill my child, Slayte." This is a whisper between them. An intensity burns in their gaze. A fire. A hate.[break][break]

They are not talking about Eris Halla.
