He'd first met so many of the Rockets when a @ everyone was issued on the sub. When someone dutifully shared hair and skin care products with the group. When someone stood off to the side and watched people bathe. There was a nonzero chance that Leon had seen everyone naked.

"Our friends at work are full of surprises, Ji-Hoon."

Giona said, being as vague as possible. He had the difficult task of playfully ribbing him while not letting the public be privy to things they didn't need to know. It was an instinct that smothered his attempt to talk to , but his superiors probably appreciated it.

"And you are too." Gengar was struck. It crumpled, two hits like that was all it'd take to total it. He rotated his team until he had a chance to use Dream Eater. Rotom stood infront, using Thunder Wave on Grimmsnarl. It tried to use a descending line of sparks to stun it. It was setting up to spam Electro Ball. If it worked, it worked.

His finances were... a mess. One of the few rockets who openly paid taxes, and parked his money in a savings account not owned by the company. Ontop of that, he got an advance on his Gym Leader stipend to make moving to his new home easier. They really treated this city slicker like a king in this mining town.

She blushed as he spoke, and that seemed to egg him on. The cat he'd wrangled seemed to finally calm down, which he dutifully put on the arm-rest of the wool-covered couch next to him. He eyed her up and down, and smiled gently, in between bites.

"I have friends from work coming by a week from now. I suppose I'll cook for them too." He said, sitting down on the couch with his back straight. "But enough about me... What have you been up to?"

The coffee-colored curtains lining every window seemed to glow, but they left the room dark. It was either that, or the harsh summer's day causing the wooden floor to swell and splinter. They seemed specifically designed to block out the sun.

“Oh, that's a shame. I suppose I should've given instructions too, with the address. If you ever need to stay on this side of the country, you can take the other of the two bedrooms here.”

Giona looked him over. His pause lingered in the air. Neither spoke, and the breeze wasn’t stiff enough to make a sound.

"It’s cool, man. We’re all kinda out of it right now. It’s been a whole month of daily public appearances for some people, in addition to their actual responsibilities. I didn’t even recognize that Fernando Silph guy when I saw him."

The Rockruff running up to Razz had an innocent look on its face. Razz nonetheless insisted on taking the battle seriously. In retrospect, Giona’s comment could’ve been mildly disrespectful. Like an older brother offering to beat a game for you. "Alright, man. I just thought I’d offer. Just the other day I pushed out an Ivysaur that I caught a week ago just to see what would happen.."

Giona tugged at the towel around his neck. It kept the sun off him, but it also trapped heat and moisture on his skin. There was no way to win that battle. Sableye opened up with Confuse Ray. A blast of redirected light attempting to confuse and disorient the dog right away. 9HWinzzh

"This sun, huh? Before I adjusted to it, there was a week of battles where I camped out next to a cooler full of drinks."

"That's great. There shouldn't be anything stopping you from proving yourself in that way, save for challenges to your own gym."  He said, retracting his hand. Giona offered her a slight grin, belied in his friendliness by his own buzzed down eyebrows and weirdly intense look.

"It's based on the Will o Wisp. This like... fire that was attributed to ghosts a long time ago, but we've discovered that it's just the oxidization of flammable gases. It'll be full of Ghost types, as they owe the most to human intervention."

Giona thought about this for a second. It was just a hall filled with neon tubes, followed by a tiled room filled with neon tubes. But... surely with more experience he'd be able to put together something more compelling.

Processing paperwork. Moving into a new home. Setting up bill payment addresses. Getting a permit for the gym. Interviewing with the City Planning Commission. Buying furniture. He had many responsibilities to juggle. It wasn't like living in a little pod in the Rocket Sub anymore. Giona downed the last of his sparkling wine cooler. LbhIP5Dn

"Well..."  He stopped just short of talking, when the other man opened up to him. Stress caused grey hairs, and by god did he have his fair share of them. Was it that easy to tell that he was just barely keeping it together? He flashed a weak grin at Lars, and saw fit to be honest.

"I'm very busy. If I can make it home without falling off my Drifblim, I'll have no less than ten email chains to micromanage."

Giona looked to him, and waved the waiter over for another odd mix of Dr. Pika and vodka in a tall, skinny glass. It looked like a vase fit for a flower. A completely smooth ball of ice sat ontop, rolling and never stopping. He downed a third of it.

The room was cool and dry. One fire blast just barely missed. The light generated by the burning of carbon in the ensuing blast showed the gout of flame hitting the wall. Giona raised a brow.

He smiled. Not that anyone would see it. He’d have to thank Matias later for pulling any humidity out of the room with his blast.

"I'm sure those were harrowing battles. I'm glad this one is happening within a mile of a Pokemon Center." He said, looking to the taller man. The other made its mark, hitting Mismagius. The Mismagius fired back at Snorlax with Payback. A physical move powered up by being struck recently. A flurry of cloth-covered fists. Ow1n7xRj

Rotom used Thunder Wave, trying to slow Snorlax down even more with a series of descending sparks. It was setting up to spam Electro Ball.

"So... You're definitely not new to this. What do you do for a living?"

He had to power through that. There was no other choice, after wanted posters went up. He had to put together a new person to be quick, and for some reason the Gastly he caught with _ made him immediately go "ghost expert". It wasn't too drastic a change either, just letting the pink dye run out and buzzing his hair down.

"Just gotta be patient with that sort of thing. Wouldn't have gotten a Gengar if I couldn't deal with that."

Giona blinked, looking to Chu-e. He smirked, starting to come to life a little.

"That guy who was checking everyone out on the sub? Could he keep it in his pants long enough to massage your feet?" He said, snickering a little. Giona had his own... pursuits, but they hadn't gone this far yet. His team rotated, putting Gengar front and center. It'd use Hex, a psychic wave that'd hurt twice as much if it landed, on account of Alcremie sleeping.

He tipped the can back and downed another fifth of it. Giona nodded, looking him over. While Giona was somewhat checked out, Sableye was alert as it could possibly be, especially after being stiffened and paralyzed.

"...Is he okay? Like... I can surrender, and he can try a lower stakes challenge first. Have you taken him to Rusturf Tunnel?"

Munchlax was dazed, unfortunately. It managed to muster up a Defense Curl. A pose meant to protect it from further harm. A good instinct to have. Sableye on the other hand would attempt to lunge and swing with Foul Play despite being paralyzed.jgQoVFEc

Somehow, it managed to power through the joint pain. Sableye lunged, and tried to get in close with a move that got more intense as the opponent buffed themselves.

"Sometimes I go there when I have a day off from work."

The early morning. Vic wasn’t fazed by this new information. Seemed like a nice guy, too. Probably not the type to try to 100% everything. Some type of person more scary to him than a morning person.

"Ghost types. They owe the most to human intervention. I don’t think a Polteageist or Banette would’ve taken the form it would’ve without like... human concepts. The objective then... is to show your team what you do for them.."

This was going to be interesting. Dragon Breath made its mark. A third of the time, Sableye wouldn’t be able to attack at all, in addition to being slower now.

Giona pinched his earrings. In a flash of light, Sableye’s middle gem expanded and formed a tower-shield. It’d have to, using defense to compete when speed was no longer an option.

Sableye opened up with Power Gem. A slurry of rock and mineral runoff water sent at Altaria in the same manner as a water gun. Every part of the beam caught the sun and had a slight rainbow texture over them.

Giona looked to Vic with a slight grin, waiting for him to follow up.

"I don’t think anyone else has seen this yet.."

A day off. Few and far between now. He'd recalled fondly his hikes with Remiel and King. One turned into something of a quest on its own, the other merely shooting the shit with someone at work. Both trips accomplished just as little as when he skipped stones across the water with Jayden. Those hikes nonetheless saw him orders of magnitude more confident and capable of articulating himself.

Was he just weak around people who he felt a strong connection with? That wouldn't account for the friends at work. For how he wanted to be strong for them, for various reasons. For his almost brotherly rivalry with King. For the senior members who took a chance on him. It also wouldn't account for how quickly he rebounded, and found a date. How he wanted to be strong for that woman. How he wanted to pick her up and...

And... speaking of weakness and connections, it pained him to think about what his foolishness cost Chryssa. No apology could ever do justice to that. To a child walking with a cane because a bunch of self-important adults had a pissing match with their respective fire types. Giona participated in that too, he was just the most impotent of them all. She stuck her neck out for him nonetheless. A child did that for an adult. It put a knot in his stomach, as he walked to the east from his home on the edge of town. Just thinking about it had his eyes burning a hole in the side of the mountain, leaving an onlooker concerned.

Having moved into Rustboro, he set up camp. Not just a gym, a destination for school field trips. He'd also set up a new home. Lived in, to be sure. Chances are, he was going to regret leaving it in the charge of Rowlet and Ivysaur.

The road to the east was fascinating. A place where the pavement slowly tapered off, until there was only grass. A dirt trail went on for the next half mile, and culminated in a rest stop for miners, who went to work on Rusturf Tunnel. Going further, he found himself inside the cave.

Giona saw fit to let out Sableye for a walk. A little imp native to Dewford Cave. It no longer clung to his finger with its whole hand. It scampered off, like a dog turned loose on a ranch. Giona lagged behind somewhat, slowly walking after Sableye. He seemed lost.

He'd even gotten his wires crossed about getting his wires crossed at this point. Couldn't even find a reprieve from the kind of restless nature that undergirded someone like Theo. Like all of his pokemon, who feared and respected him in equal measure. The little imp chattered to wake him from his dazed state.

Sableye made this odd grunt. Like a duck. It'd found something, and Giona saw fit to follow it.

"Oh. Thanks. This is like when Espurr gifts me a hair-ball."

Some kind of lingering joint pain from the paralyzing attack halts Sableye. The semi-liquid rock blast becomes a puddle of sediment at its feet. Cooling in the hot sun, yes, but not impressive.

"Sometimes it takes a while. Ivysaur was like that too, now that I think about it."

His hair was strewn around. The normally blended white and charcoal grey hues were separate strands, all pushed down from what was probably wrangling the cat. His eyes lit up, watching her greet him. In a sundress, bearing a gift, no less. Giona bent his arm to catch the cat sliding down his shoulder. He tucked Espurr under one arm like a football, and led her into his home with a knowing nod.

Giona walked to the kitchen, and dug two bowls out. He set a spoon in each, and scooped out a mix of mushrooms, rice, onions, and italian sausage into each. He walked back to the living room, setting both on a low-sitting coffee-table next to the couch. If she joined him, she’d find that it had the texture of a wool flannel shirt, and the softness of a pillow.

"Oh! You didn’t have to do that. It would’ve been enough of a gift to have you in my home." He said, sitting down on the couch with his back straight. "Nonetheless, I trust you to have atleast brought something you’d eat too."

The room was minimal, casting painted white walls against dark wood colors and textures, occasionally broken up by a black throw-rug. The television already seemed to be playing a narrated nature documentary about the humble Pikipek. Ivysaur sat next to Giona on a black rug, and rolled onto its side like a dog. Giona lowered the volume enough for the two to hear eachother, and turned closed captioning on.

“So, have you been to this town before?”

The pink sprite slowly drifted off, slightly out of reach. seemed to have a special insight into it, which went over Giona's head. It's you, he said, as if he'd seen it before.

"--Huh?"

The sprite then disappeared altogether. Back where they started was as close as he got to describing it, but that was dishonest. They were all far safer than the people still in the foothills of the mountain. The air in the jungle even felt cleaner.

The group was halted all of a sudden. A man was there, bellowing at all of them. Old and somewhat muscular like . He was covered in markings, which would've been fine. Where he scared everyone was with blocking the exit. With accusing them of trespassing, when the other option was certain death.

It prompted a murderous rage in him, but Zenji had seniority, and prostrated himself before the man. Giona followed suit.

"I will do what it takes to prove that I'm no mere trespasser."

She got him! Got him the one last time. Sableye folded, curling up in the fetal position on the sand. Giona had a black and red ball ready to protect it from further harm with a red beam. He sheepishly covered the top with his fingers so she wouldn't see.

"Wow. You got me. Anyways... yeah. I will be, once I'm done with my chain of emails with Rustboro's City Planning Commission."  He stepped across the sand, straightening out his tie again. Giona dug his hands out of his pockets. He reached out a bandaged right hand, offering to shake her hand, now that she'd won.

"I already have people lined up to challenge it, including that John Sullivan, who runs the gym in my hometown. You can visit whenever you'd like."

Giona looked to her with something of a neutral expression. The exact pink of her hair reminded him of someone, but he was failing to put the pieces together.

She got him! Took advantage of his momentary pause to swing at him! Sableye was hit by the array of Energy Balls trying to clip it. One more hit would total it at this rate.

"That's wonderful. I'm glad that you get these chances to visit them. I'm just close enough that I can hike through Rusturf tunnel and jog half a mile to see my parents." Sableye struck this time with Foul Play. It paused for a moment to build tension, leering with unblinking eyes. A sneaky move that was physical, sure, but it also accounted for changes in Musharna's physical stats. It lunged yet again.

"Interesting. I suppose I'll have to keep training, if I'm to put up a serious challenge at your gym."

Giona adjusted his necktie with both hands, loosening it slightly. He then took the pokeballs clipped to his belt and stowed them in a pants pocket.
