Bill's eyes gleamed as he saw his prize. It was the last one, gleaming like a ripe diamond under a banner that read "SIGNED GIFT FREE WITH PURCHASE". Bill had to have it.

"To me," Bill said, and Decidueye appeared from the shadows. "Spirit Shackles," he commanded, and the bird locked everyone into place with ghostly manacled. Enemy Pokemon, shoppers, and merch hunters alike were chained to the floor. Meanwhile, Bill reached out and took the squishy prize, putting it in his basket.

Bill's gaze swept right past angelo vestri , and he headed for the register with his prize.

honedge was hit by magical leaf

Honedge gleamed as metal layered upon itself, folding and strengthening as its Iron Defense bolstered. "Hold your ground," Bill commanded, and the Honedge stayed where it was., floating in the air among the deadly leaves.

At Kazimir's signal, the leaves struck inwards, and though the saber cut several from the air, many struck the pommel and the flat of the blade, scoring the metal where it was least protected.

The saber whirled, cutting the last of the leaves from the sky and returning to rest position, waiting for the next opponent from its floral opponent.

Growlithe erupted in a supernova that burnt Glalie from the sky. The boss slammed into the ground, a charred and blackened chunk of ice. "Magnificent," said Bill, applauding as the referee blew his whistle, signaling an end to the match. "That was absolutely wonderful! What a treat to watch."

Bill had no qualms losing to such a powerful opponent. She was Elite Four, after all, and the strong deserved to rule.

Some battles are won or lost by inches. This was not one of those battles. Harsh arctic light reflected off Bill's sunglasses as Glalie's breath froze Salazzle and Milotic.

The great beast had not been phased by Bill's attacks, and so it turned its sights on Stormy.

Ditto took on Lucario's shape, just in time to be Frozen solid by Stormy's return shot. The referee grabbed the fallen Spheal and blew his whistle, signaling the start of final phase of the match. "SUDDEN DEATH!" shouted the man, and he blew his whistle three more times.

Instead of tossing the Spheal back at Bill, he threw a Pokeball above the net and a massive head took shape. The glacial eyes glared down at Bill, as the floating demon breathed jets of stale frost. "Salazzle! Incinerate!" Bill commanded, and Abigail obeyed. Flame spewed from her mouth in thick clouds, clogging the air and melting the net. The SUDDEN DEATH GLALIE opened its mouth wider, preparing its revenge.

"Return," Bill said, sharp and fast. Milotic was already looming over the net, large eyes watching the serve from Lucario. There was little power behind the shot, and as the trap snapped shot Bill returned fire with a thunderous gush of water.

Water Pulse blasted the ball back, the Spheal rocketing right towards Growlithe.

"Who doesn't? Nothing like a soak to just let all that stress bleed away," Bill said, as the ball shot back to his side, scoring a fast point for Stormy. Bill started to feel like he needed a soak. Volleyball had not been his strong suit today.

"Milotic. Serve," Bill ordered, and the serpent reared up. It batted the ball lightly, deceptively. Barely enough to get it over the net.

Bill didn't lie. Many Rockets dealt in falsehoods, but Bill preferred the shadows between truths. Lies of omission, or phrases meant to mislead. He didn't lie, which made his truths hit all the harder when they flicked off his silver tongue.

"Yes," he said, the single word shot through with steel rods of certainty. There was no need for a follow up. Explanation was superlative to this stained-glass oath.

Milotic fell to the same, scales charred from the Hyper Beam. The battle was over.

"It was never the plan, but things do appear that way," Bill said. Avalugg's Blizzard tugged at the Smog, spreading it wide and thin. The bitter snowflakes choked the air with caustic cold.

The other competitor, who they had all forgotten until now, also attacked CIAN MAHER. The Slateport local's Crustle skittered across the icy arena, trying to get its footing so that it could Slam into Avalugg's iceberg with its own hefty home.

Salazzle lashed out with her flaming tongue, igniting remnants of the Smog and washing the field in Incinerating heat. Salazzle scuttled back, waiting for her Corrosive poison to take effect on her opponents. Did she feel bad about attacking that poor, doe-eyed Mawile? N-no. Of course not!

The Solosis slapped into Milotic, Confusing the poor serpent. It fanned itself with its stained glass tail, seemingly mesmerized by the tail. "Thanks Bo," Bill said, taking the compliment. There was nothing wrong in taking praise from a superior combatant. "I do what I can to stay fit."

Bill accepted the Jigglypuff from the attendant, and for the fifth time this match he served. Palossand surged up underneath him, and he spiked his own set, driving the wobbly ball down towards the far corner of Bo's court.

"That's a shame," Bill said. He knew what Wolfe was about. As much as he wanted to pull her apart and pin her down like an butterfly specimen he wanted her to ask for it first.

Umbreon crunched down on the rock, and the 108 souls retreated, taking refuge in their anchor stone as Milotic rotated back in. Bill's last Pokemon. The serpent slapped back at Umbreon with a fierce Aqua Tail.

"I'd stay if you asked."

The Hydro Cannon tore through Ditto, and Spiritomb rotated in. The ghost shifted in its stone base, emerald face contorting as it shot a Dark Pulse at the recovering Inteleon. Retribution was the dish of the day. Letting everything out and leaving yourself vulnerable for a strike right to the heart. How fitting.

"How long do you want me to stay?" Bill asked, clear eyes half-closing as his smile grew.

Take Down slammed into Ditto's eye, and the side of Copperajah's face wobbled, weakening. The elephant trumpeted in pain, falling to one knee and flailing its trunk at the Umbreon as it recharged from its intense attack.

"I've missed you too, Wolfe," Bill said. He looked at the rough, torn battle field between them. "I've missed this."

Fifteen years ago, an assassin had shot Bill. The bullet had hit half an inch below his heart, pierced his lung, and burst out of his back. He had been 'on a business trip' in intensive care for weeks.

In the decade and a half since, Bill had cultivated a healthy lifestyle, with extensive cardio every day. He ran, he sailed, he lived like a man twenty years his junior. Bill was fitter than he had been when he was shot. Some days, he considered it to be the catalyst for his mid-life second wind.

If it wasn't for that assassin, and that fateful shot, then he wouldn't be here, in Hoenn, elbowing some greedy housewife in the neck and taking her Lars and Articuno tissue-box cover.

"That's mine," Bill said casually, pushing the woman to the floor and making it look accidental. Palossand dragged her under one of the counters, and Ditto assumed her place. "Disable the left register," Bill said, and the housewife-Ditto nodded. It climbed up one of the shelved, running along the shifting aluminum racks, and dive-tackled the teenage cashier. One register down. Bill headed for the remaining checkout.
