Pryde was naturally skeptical, but also ill-informed. His impression of church was common, and wholely natural, though clearly not founded on interactions with the Church of Arceus. "We don't do that sort of thing," Bill said simply, brushing off the barbed remarks. "Other churches only have lies to offer, Pryde. We have tangible proof. Come visit. You'll see."

"As expected you've cut right to the core of the question. There are many elements that would tilt the fight in one way or another," Bill said, stepping around the hulking figure of a Palpitoad. "Evolution, experience, move sets, and weaknesses. These all play a big part in determining who is stronger." Bill visualizing the fight. Like Pryde, he would bet on the Aegislash. That ghostly sword would slice right through the ant's plates.

"Let's say the Aegislash is winning. Durant is pinned against a tree and the sword is about to fall," Bill slowly mimed delivering the killing blow. "And then a ranger appears." Bill said, halting the downward blow. "She's well meaning, of course. Kind of heart, and hates seeing Pokemon fighting. She breaks up the fight and, quite without realizing, deprives the Aegislash of food."

"This human has turned the tables. They have deprived the winner of a rightful victory. They have sought to play god and decided the winner for themselves, invariably picking the weaker of the two. Do you see anything wrong with that Pryde?"

"I left a lot her. Family. Friends. Lovers. Companions. My whole life was here, and it's a pleasure to be back. It fits just right." Bill smiled, his eyes drinking in the sight of a backlit Wolfe. The afternoon sun lit her edges like a halo, or an approaching flame.

"Ditto," Bill said, and the glob of malleable matter rotated in. Imposter activated, and the Power Whip from Wolfe's Copperajah slapped down onto its freshly formed, identical twin. "Retaliate. As hard as you can," Bill said. He didn't know what moves Wolfe's Pokemon had, but doubtless it had the capacity to bring all of that elephantine power to bear.

Ditto stampeded towards its opposite number, trumpeting its perfect mimicry and thundering onwards towards a Giga Impact.

"Quite right," Bill agreed. Sometimes a rose had to flash its petals, or even hide its roots. Aggression was not always the name of the game. "What a gentleman!" Bill said, smiling as the Roserade bowed. "I appreciate a fight with a little class."

Bill's sword appeared by his side. It stretched from above his hip down to the sand, and was whip thin. It was a saber, not a longsword. "Honedge," Bill said, by way of command and introduction. The saber floated forwards, flicked up, saluted, and same to rest floating in the air and pointing straight at the Roserade.

"When you're ready," Bill said, putting on his sunglasses to block the glare from the blade.

"I'd appreciate that," Bill said, eagerly accepting Angelo's invitation. He drew his phone, with has of course sporting an official AQUA phone cover. The back of the phone was replete with dangling charms of the icy pair. So much so that the phone looked like a deadly weapon. A bird-of-nine-tails, if you will.

Bill snapped some photographs of the rare merch. Worst come to worst he could always look up the items online and but them...secondhand. It was better than nothing, technically.

As Angelo neared the tent, an announcement played from an Articuno-shaped loudspeaker set up out front. "To celebrate Laurence Anderson's upcoming Birthday, the next twenty-nine customers will receive a limited edition, commemorative gift, signed by Laurence Anderson himself!" Bill's eyes narrowed. Signed? A spurious claim. But if it is limited edition then I must obtain it. He readjusted his bags and picked up the pace.

"-and may they find peace in their imminent failures. In the name of Arceus. Amen." said Bill, his voice rising as he finished his prayer. "Alright. Let's start then," he said, a smile spreading across his peaceful face.

Low, sweet Smog dripped from Salazzle's mouth. It tumbled in slow clouds along the sand, eating into shells, creatures and metal alike, thanks to Abigail's Corrosion.

Her black and purple coloring blended with the smog, and she slipped inside, disappearing in the caustic cloud.

Bo was something else. Bill was genuinely impressed by the athleticism of the trainer and his Pokemon. Behind his strategic sunglasses, Bill's eyes bored into his opponent. "That was a masterful shot," Bill said.

The ball struck Lurantis this time, and a thick layer of frost crackled over the mantis's carapace, solidifying it. Bill watched as the attendant replaced Spheal with a wobbly Solosis.

The plan was falling apart. Every one of his Pokemon was damaged, and Bo's team looked pristine. He was out of practice, that much was true. All three of his Pokemon were new additions. There would be some serious changes made once they returned to Sootopolis.

"Milotis, serve," Bill ordered. The serpent pulled himself up, readying her tail. "Higher," Bill commanded. Milotic pulled up further, towering over the net. "There may be a return. Prepare a counter." Milotic froze at Bill's tone before nodding. He served, smashing his stained-glass tail down on the wobbly ball as hard as he possibly could.

Milotic loved the rain. The constant, yet unpredictable sprinkle of water on scales. Her scales felt sensitive, pinged by every drop. But over time they would grow numb to the constant stimulation.

"I came back because I was told to," Bill said simply. "But that's not why I wanted to come back."

"Water Pulse," Bill said, and the serpent moved, parting the pooling rain as it slithered across the sands towards Inteleon. Rainwater spilled and surged, building into a shimmering blast that shot towards Inteleon.

The Cascoon rocketed back over the net, bug eyes rolling as the insect collides with Milotic, knocking over the serpent. "Maybe it's just me," Bill said, good-naturedly. "I'm sure I used to be better at this."

Milotic rose back into her tight coil, the punctures from Cascoon's spikes already bloodshot from the spreading poison.

The referee handed Bill the replacement, a blubbery Spheal. It let out little breaths of chilled air. "Anything near the ocean. Volleyball, sailing, scuba diving. Even a bit of surfing. It's important to stay fit, don't you think?"

"Lurantis, Sunny Day," Bill said, and the sunlight overhead brightened to a frightening intensity. Bill put on a pair of branded sunglasses. He set the ball expertly, and signaled for Milotic to bump the ball back to him. The serpent did, and Bill jumped up, sprinkles of sand flying as he left the ground and spiked the ball, sending it soaring towards the corner of his opponent's court.

The Mud Shot sent the ball whizzing back at an odd angle. It struck Palossand, cratering the sand on its left side and leaving a little puddle of glass. "Quite a return you've got there," Bill complemented. "Do you play sports much, Bo?"

The Darumaka uncurled and wandered off. The referee tossed Bill a Cascoon, its skin shimmering with multiple Hardens.

He tossed the spiky cocoon back into the air, and Palossand formed its wounded body into a giant sandy hand. With a slam of Earth Power, it slapped the Cascoon back towards Bo.

"It's been a while since I've felt like battling," Bill said, rising with Emma. They walked, leisurely, to the arena, taking places across from one another. "And just as long since I've had to battle, either. It's surprising how few people try to kill you when you're sequestered away in a village church." He rotated his arms, loosening up limbs that were already free of stiffness.

Bill sent out Ditto, Milotic, and Spiritomb, with Milotic in the lead. "I'm ready when you are, Wolfe."

Bill motioned to the referee, and the man tossed him a Darumaka. On Bill's side of the court were his three combatants: Milotic, Palossand, and Lurantis.

With practiced form, Bill set the 'volleyball'. Milotic smacked it downward, spiking it towards Bo's team.

Bill and the girl talked for a while. Her mother was still running the shop, at least in name, but the daughter was the face. A beautiful face too.

He left, wandering down side streets and alleys, all as familiar as the veins on the back of his wife's hands.

It was the hour of fading light, and he found himself, quite by design, in the park. There was another creature there. Not a human, but also not a machine. It beeped softly, its cry unabrasive and almost familiar, like a default notification tone on a foreign phone.

Bill took the alien back home , to the heights of Sootopolis.

Bill watched her eyes focus. They found him and focused in like crosshair. She was slower than before. Years ago she'd reminded him of a bird of prey, or a wolf with blood on its tongue. It must be the injury though. Age hadn't dared to lay a finger on such a sharp beauty. "Are you up to a battle?" he asked, eyes never leaving hers.
