"I've always disagreed with the stereotype about dads staying out of the kitchen," Bill said, as his Lurantis placed the finishing touches on the mini pizzas. Two little basil leaves places delicately to form a bowtie for the Rowlet. "Personally I find it cathartic. There's something soothing about manual work. Using your hands. Just being fast, and precise." Musharna soaked the iced coffee in a beam of Moonlight, setting the white chocolate crescent glowing on its bed of foam. "Another order done," Bill said proudly.

Alcremie used Decorate

"Not for a long time," Bill answered Raphael Pryde . He politely muscled THEO BECKETT out of the way so that he had room to Decorate the cupcakes. Mawile and Poipole worked together, the steel fairy's open jaws oozing a Fairy Wind to hide the scent of decay. Poipole provided a Helping Hand, mixing the batter with its stinger.

Alcremie shook itself, spraying cream, powdered sugar, and chunks of fondant on the waiting treats. "I cooked for myself these last few years, and at home with the kids it was a lot more organized than this. What about you?"

First round up, and the orders just kept on coming. Now it was an icy dessert and a cool, summer caprice. "I've got the greens," he said, as Lurantis prepped the salad. Bill arranged to Leafage into delicate, presentable shapes before sliding it down the line.

"A pinch of salt," Bill said, and his Feraligatr rumbled, licking its jaws as it shook some of the white granules into the boiling water. What was going into the pot? A haunch of meat?

Sadly, it was only coffee brewing, and once THEO BECKETT had roasted the beans the order would be ready for finishing touches.

A sickly sweet scent wafted from the far corner of the stall. It stuck in your nose, filling your brain with dripping caramel and crunchy chunks of sugar. Salazzle watched, embered tongue lashing, as the sandwich was sliced on the bench.

Using Future sight on the elevator

"An elevator, how convenient," Bill said, joining Hideo Kino at the broken set of doors. "I don't suppose it's working," he said, just as the boy's Pokemon slammed into the doors with its charged attack. Musharna floated over Bill's shoulder, her dreams causing her to shiver. Silver light shifted in her smoke, visions of metal rending and breaking.

"Knock knock!" Bill said, as Hideo's Beheeyem headbutted the doors again. In answer, Musharna's Future Sight manifested, pelting the metal from the other side, like a creature breaching containment and clawing for escape. "Who is it?" Bill called, and abruptly the sounds stopped. He waited a few seconds before turning to Hideo. "Guess it was just the wind."

"No, you've got to help me. There's a dead body under the boardwalk!"

"Emily Mackie, fucker! I know you slid her dick!" blasted the transmission from Bill's earpiece. He laughed, and there was a little commotion from under the boardwalk. "There's something under here, said the officer, but it's not a body, it's a sand-" the officer's words were cut off by a handful of sand. The grains filled his mouth and nose, and crammed downwards, packing his lungs.

"All quiet over here," Bill said to Tempest Quinn and ryuuzaki amemiya . There was a soft crunching as the body sunk into the beach. He would hold onto the remains of the two officers and their Pokemon. There were many uses for a corpse. "Any trouble on that end?"

"Most are not foolish enough to try it, and those that would — they would not survive the experience to pledge their loyalty afterward."

Bill nodded, absorbing the information from Gavin. He held the podium, firm and commanding, and gestured to the cameraman to start rolling. Bill's voice broke the growing quiet like the throwing open of heavy doors.

"Hoenn needs stability," he said, speaking as much to Gavin as to the people who would watch the ad in the coming weeks and months. "It needs someone with an understanding of this land's people, and a powerful loyalty to the preservation of her core values: Backbone. Family. And a vision for the future."

"For years the leadership has been flagging. Unfilled gym leader spots, an Elite...two? Three? And a council that seems to change with the seasons." As Bill talked, he left the comparison unvoiced. The League was full of gaps, whereas Rocket was flush with promise, and people willing to step up to responsibility.

"If you elect me as councilman, then you'll be adding to that council with a man born and raised on these shores. Someone who walks Hoenn's sands, swims in its waters, and knows its people. A family man, with a lifetime of seeing just what the citizens of this wonderful country can do when we put our minds to it."

"The people of Hoenn are strong. Just look at the recent disasters that we've survived: Invading Megalopolans! Warring Ultra Beasts! The return of Team Rocket! They say the strength of a nation is defined by its leadership, so we must have some darn strong people in charge already."

His voice dropped, pulling at the ears of those in the studio. People leaned in as he spoke, his voice full of darkness and building pressure. "But simply surviving isn't enough now. I lost my daughter in the Megalopolan attacks, and any disaster where we lose lives is one where we were not prepared enough."

Like a wave, his voice came surging back, pulling at the spirits of those in the room, drawing them up with him as he built towards the climax. "It's time to prepare. It's time to build and expand. To take this foundation of rock and sea, and to create a Hoenn that can forge onwards, into a bright future!"

"You need someone who can fight for the Hoenn that you all deserve, and who can look at the cost of that shining tomorrow and pull out their wallet, ready to give everything they've got." Bill drew himself up, his paper smile as clean and perfect as a crisp hundred. "I will fight for you. I will build that bright future...I will foot the Bill."

“We’re not done.”

Bill was out of practice, but there was more than a decade of atrophy between his skills and those of a fucking pirate. It wasn't hard work. The ocean bore the heaviest burden, churning the dozen or so corpses to red mash. "Nice and clean," Bill said approvingly, as he tossed a loose foot overboard. Creatures were swarming now, and the tattooed flesh disappeared in a clash of waiting mouths. "Nothing of value lost."

The surviving crew gathered on the deck with the civilians. There was no big hero speech, for that would have been unseemly. People had died here today. Instead, Bill and Lulu were quietly seen helping the Captain. From a distance it was clear that they were the reason that everyone here still had light in their eyes. If anyone had been close enough to the trio, they would have heard a brief discussion over hazard pay.

Blankets, warm drinks, and stories were shared through the civilians. They had been lucky today. Saved. By a pair of people who were in the right place at the right time. A real act of God.

“We’re not done.”

Pandemonium rose from the surf to consume the boat. Scruffy pirates with harsh, blunt weapons shoved and clubbed their way through the boat, heading for the cockpit. A family was too slow getting out of their way and the leader, a man with more facial piercings than teeth, put them down.

Bill kept back, waiting for the group to pass. Two more pirates brought up the rear, each with a hostage held against them. He stepped out to block their path. "Let them go." He said simply. No need to mince words. The pirates sneered, as they had been paid to. One of them spat. That hadn't been in the contract, but it was expected.

Quick and obscured. They will forgive brutality if they don't see it, Bill surmised. Abigail emerged in a cloud of low smog, her tongue licking out to sever the legs of the left man, slashing up at an awkward angle. The smog obscured the attack, reducing it to a flash of red in the rolling gray cloud. Both the screaming pirate and his captive tumbled to the ground.

The second pirate swore, a second before a shadowy arrow burst through his face from the back, puncturing his eye. He dropped like a bag of wet sand.

Bill grabbed the wrists of the captives, hauling them up to their feet. "Come on, let's get out of here."

"A puppet gym leader. That would certainly be a step in the right direction. We already have a few of the spots filled with familiar faces." It was an longer-term play than most Rocket ploys. Put their own kind in the gym spots to streamline the challenge process for other Rockets. In time, there would be more powerful trainers allied with them, and in time even an Elite Four spot occupied by Rocket.

"I've got something similar planned. It's what I called you here to help with. I'm running for councilman. Paperwork is already signed and ready to submit." Bill gestured over to an immaculate set of squared and stapled documents on the counter. "What I need from you, is a path to fame. Everybody knows that the council spots are heavily grounded in popularity. They'll never elect a nobody to the council, and I don't have the government work pedigree that applicants usually possess." Bill had been far too busy working for Rocket and for the Church or Arceus to build up the standard, glowing resume.

"So instead we're going yo orchestrate a transformation from citizen to hero, so when the time comes for my step up everyone will already be on my side."

"Mr. Anderson I assume?"

Bill heard the voices too. Low, bored mutterings from men on duty. Were they guarding something? Keeping watch? Investigating the tunnels? Either way, as Pryde had said they were witnesses. "Let's get them out of the way," Bill said, and there was a dry, gulping sound as his Palossand consumed the liabilities, pulling them under the sand.

Bill walked into the now empty cavern, which was thankfully free of cameras. Thirty seconds later the two bodies were disgorged in the corner, both leaking pink smoke. They weren't dead, just asleep.

Palossand spat out a pile of valuables at Bill's feet. Papers, wallets, keys. He sifted through the items. "They were mapping the tunnels," he said, unfolding one of the papers to reveal a topographical map. "Not a bad job, either."
