Summer Atreides is one of the only people in all of Hoenn for whom Mars would go just about anywhere, even if anywhere in this case means a bar he’s not all that familiar with. It doesn’t matter, does it? In the end, what matters is having one last drink with his friend before the year ends.

When he enters the bar in question, he finds Summer distracted by her phone, so obviously he makes the kind of mature choice that is to be expected from the CEO of a multinational financial institution…. or not. He approaches, and once right behind her, it’s to her ear that he simply whispers:

He immediately takes one step back, of course, and it’s then that Summer is greeted with the brightest of smiles:

Sinnoh’s history is varied, and as it often is the case in this world, it’s also deeply tied to its mythology. Mars had spent a large portion of his life in region, he had read hundreds of books in his time there, and even he hadn’t really learned much about some of its legends until the most recent years. The worst part of it all, though? The things he hadn’t wished to learn.

“Hmm… A lot of Sinnoh’s people are really religious—” He begins, gaze wandering over the nearby trees. There’s azure flames in the darkness, and these flames call to the attention of the Unown as well.

Taking confident steps, the small Symbol Pokémon marches towards the source of light, and Mars doesn’t even bother to try to stop it.

“They believe Arceus created the universe and all of that. I never really bought into it, but recently, when I was in The Cloud, we were shown the supposed origin of the universe.” The memories are vivid, as are those of everything else he had gone through back then. All the pain. All the change. “I guess that’s the kind of place Hoenn is… where learning things like those is possible. I can see the appeal for people like us.”

There’s a faint smirk, one that does not fade when HIDDEN POWER pushes a Chandelure out of the trees. He simply throws a pokéball to capture it.

Dragons clash, the singing wings of a Desert Spirit ringing in a cacophony with ceaseless currents. It echoes through the cavern, amplified; making it so voices seem so quiet by contrast.

For a second, Mars is reminded of a meeting at a much different cavern — of the place where he first met the Unown-D that is now among his own.

What awaits them at the very top of the mountain is an Alakazam. Well...it doesn't really await them and it's more like they happen to run into it, but given that it clearly intends on defending its territory, that still applies.

The first one they encounter seems to think extremely highly of itself: leaning against a tree with an attempt at swagger instead of running away when seeing them. Does it think it owns this place? Apparently, because it seems to intend to fight Dollar when their gazes meet.

Dollar gives a warning roar and the Pancham seems to doubt itself for a second. It charges all the same, and it's then that Mars does no more than click his tongue.

In the time Mars has know amaryllis karneva, he has known her to be someone who tries to optimistic about things, no matter how terrible they can sometimes get. He has never been that way, far from it, but he can appreciate it in people like her. Lis needs her optimism; it serves her well.

“Our objective is to venture deeper into this ship.” Mars reminds the group when they step onto the derelict Megalopolan vessel known as the Quaestor Lucis. The reminder is mostly meant for @micah, really, since she had not been here last time – when they had found the key yet had been forced abruptly leave before making use of it. “There’s a high likelihood that we’ll encounter Poipole and Nihilego, so be ready to use those vaccines if anyone needs them, Steel.”

He’s calm about it all, but perhaps that’s mostly because Cillian Quinn seems to be doing fine after having just recuperated from being affected by Nihilego’s toxins. The fact that they’re both wearing their SYGNA SUITS this time also provides some reassurance, protected by dense fabric woven with Infinity Energy (black and grey with a feather pattern and azure accents in his case), even if that means he has no access to his abilities…

Xanthos had been by his side from the moment they entered the rift, carrying an incubator brought here from Blackstone Labs.

Admittedly, as much as Mars is known to be considered somewhat of a cat person, the Scorbunny that soon crosses their path may just have one over Dollar when it comes to cuteness. It hops from foot to foot as if standing on hot stones, and even if that’s the case, it seems to be really enjoying itself.

The Persian’s rumbling snarl quickly puts an end to its enjoyment, and instead it looks shocked and terrified. Had Dollar guessed Mars’ thoughts? No, the Persian is probably just aware of what is obvious to Mars now: the Scorbunny is subpar.

As they continue on their way up the mountain, lights shiny in the darkness that lies among trees. For moment, they catch the attention of the Riolu, seeming to distract him from their goal, but Mars is quick to correct that before it’s too late to do so:

As one of the owners, coming to check in is important even if he’s not the one running things (especially because he’s not the one running things), and when the chance for those occasional trips does come, he also takes the opportunity to visit a couple of familiar faces in the city…

“That he is.” Mars responds without missing a beat, and when he does so, he looks into the eyes of Team Rocket’s freshly minted Admin. His champagne flute is slightly raised as if to toast to this. “He’s all I could ever want and so much more.”

Words of affection flow with ease, and there’s warm and sweetness in the smile that tugs at his lips. He takes a sip, listening carefully, and although all of these are things he too had given much consideration too, he feels his smile fading. It’s not that he’s unhappy with the current situation, it’s not that he wishes things were different… it’s the knowledge that Barnaby is struggling to reconcile the reality of their relationship and their involvement with Team Rocket, and that watching him struggle is painful.

“Mon Trésor.” The term of endearment is used to call to his attention, and after the glass has been placed on the desk, he takes Barnaby’s hand to pull him closer to him. “It’s our situation, no? I have other identities too, and even the name the public knows me as isn’t who I really am.”

Mars has never cared much for the opinions of most people, but having to keep this a secret hurts. Why? The truth is obvious: Barnaby is the person who matters the most to him, and he would never want to pretend like that’s not the case, especially when their work for Team Rocket often means ending up in life-threatening situations together.
