Goosebumps raked the young woman's quivering body. Not only were they returning to this god-forsaken realm filled with extraterrestrial threats, but on the way over to the rift, JAMES BAKER had nonchalantly added the important tidbit of information that more members of AEO would also be in attendance.

So, not only would this be a test of her waning mental, but it would also act as a first impression for her colleagues.

"Sorry, sorry," she apologized, smiling through the constant waves of anxiety. Each time one would wash over her, another small misstep would lead her leaning either a smudge to the left or to the right. Luckily, there was always JAMES BAKER by her side.

"It's wolfgang volkov , right? It's pleasure to meet you! I'm Rory Faust ."

Her outstretched hand sought out his for a firm shake.

"The teeth? What? Of course not," she laughed, her rosy cheeks brightened by his gaze. "You just give similar vibes. I don't know how to put it."

She did, actually.

You're both cute.

But their possible shared future employment prohibited the words from ever escaping. They'd only serve to muddle the waters for what was meant to be a long, positive working relationship. Though, some might question why even go on this little expedition out to the fairgrounds if that was her stance on things. Rory, on the other hand, chose to ignore that aspect of today's adventure.

It was a bit nerve-wracking being left alone with James like this. He was a nice guy, there was no doubt about that, but in all the novels she'd read, something always first happens in situations like this. Behind closed doors, in the comfort of one's own bed.

In fact, she could easily pinpoint an exact scene from a recent novel she'd dug into that started the same way. They were lab partners, looking to get a project done, when the female lead dropped a pencil, to which the male lead also reached down to grab for her, bringing their hands together for the briefest kiss of a touch.

"Um, sure, sounds good."

She readjusted herself, turning her body to face him. Her hands folded on her lap.

"Ready when you are."

One hand reached for the Buizel, the other JAMES BAKER.

"Okay okay okay!"

Together, the three of them were freed to set off to the next stall, leaving behind nothing more than the scattered remains of joyous laughter.

"What do ya think?"

Bringing the plushie in front of her, she gave the small water type a good look down, searching for any loose threads. Carnival stalls were notorious for their low-quality product and as a plushie connaisseur herself, it was within her duties to ensure there wouldn't be any premature breakage of her newfound friend.

Suddenly, Rory brought them to a curt stop. She then scooted in front of him, holding up the Buziel close beside JAMES BAKER' head.

"He kind of reminds me of you."

She didn't even bother asking about his preference, as they were only one thing on the menu tonight: water and more water.

Skipping over to the corner of her room, she knelt beneath her bed and dug into a small gray mini fridge. It was kept snugged between her tucked drawers, just big enough to hold no more than a few bottles of water and some snacks. She pulled out two bottles and handed one over to him.

"Here."

Next, she grabbed the promised chips. Salt and Vinegar, just the way he liked them.

"And some snacks," she smiled, dropping it onto the bed. Next came her own body, as she gently slipped onto the corner of her bed, bringing her legs into a polite criss-cross. "So! How shall we start?"

There is much we still don't know - that was a statement that could describe multiple thoughts filtering through her mind. She questioned, more than what the game was detailing, whether what she was viewing was another piece of fiction, as a few of her routes had been, or if it was based in the same reality others sprung from.

And, if it were based on reality, how did Macro Cosmos become privy to such developments? To where did they even originate from? The league? Rocket? If it were rocket, she'd expect to at least hold some hint of what this organic being might've been.

Rory never meant to be late.

Punctuality was important, so she kept to it, even during the worst of times, but this afternoon had been nothing less than a complete disaster for the budding scientist. First, she missed her alarm, which meant springing into work 30 minutes late. Then, while waiting in line for her coffee, someone spilled tea all over her outfit, forcing her to go back home and change. And now, when she meant to arrive early for a meeting, her rented Mudsdale decided to act up, refusing to move forward without sniffing every poke of greenery on their pathway to the designated meeting spot.

"Hello!! So so so so sorry for being late. It won't happen again!"

Freelancing? Somehow, Rory envied the freedom that came with an occupation like that. To be given the power to whisk oneself onto a new city with a new job was something she could never see for herself, especially now with the shackles of Team Rocket coiled around her ankles.

Maybe, with JAMES BAKER 's help, a future like that was still within the realm of possibilities, though.

"It's been....interesting, yeah," she chuckled, scooting closer beside him. Another group of their mutuals had just forced themselves behind her, enclosing what little space the two had even further.

"To be honest," she leaned a little closer, masking one side of her face with the back of her hand. "I prefer talking to some of them through a mic instead."

"Mhm! They're the best."

The door behind them clicked shut, silencing the rest of the apartment.

If there was one word to describe Rory's room, it would be pink, with the second word being purple. From top to bottom, pink and purple frills decorated the small room, infecting the bedsheets with it's cute hues and the walls. On top of her bed, several plushed pokemon sat - mostly metal types - and several bookshelves were kept at either sides of the walls.

If one were to investigate these bookshelf, they'd come to find books ranging as far as mechanical innerworkings of motorized vehicles to a cheesy romance book detailing the story of a lost princess finding her way back home.

Regardless, it was a workable space.

"Sorry, it's a bit of a mess till," she sighed, plucking a stray jacket from her bedtop and hanging it behind her door. The room wasn't too dirty, besides a bit of clutter here or there, but for some reason, the young scientist couldn't help herself from offering an apology.

"You can take a seat anywhere. Oh! I forgot! Are you thirsty?"

With every throw of the ball, a small, squeezed gasp would escape her, perfectly detailing the rise of her heart rate to the excitement of carnival stall basketball. When he thrown his last ball, the plush pokemon wasn't the only thing he had won.

"You did it!"

Excitement blurring her vision, Rory found a natural tug toward him. She brought her arms around him and gave a classic congratulatory squeeze.

"Whaddya want?"

The stall worker, deadpan and bored, didn't bother waiting til after their hug to ask. Instead, he leaned forward and forced a close to their celebrations, as little as they were.

"Oh, uh, sorry! Let's see..."

Bright eyes staring up, Rory gave each of the hung prizes a long look.

"That one!"

Before even two words could spew out the sharp, pointed curve of her lips, the door had already swung back close, sounding off the absolutism with one singular click.

"Aaron!!"

Was he insane? Or, was mom right all this time, and he had really been dropped on his head? Frustion flushed her face red and weighed her brows down, scrunching up her face just in time for the door to swing back open and a pair of arms to fall over her.

She hugged him back, but only in a way that says i missed you too asshole, which she could very well bring herself to say without a dumb joke attached, but chose not to.

"I did, but you didn't reply!"

Her arms fell into a tough cross over her chest.

"Whatever. Are you going to let me in or what?"

Crisp as a morning's first winter breeze, Rory's voice echoed off the closed door of his lilycove apartment. Hopefully, she'd gotten the address right, because without a second's worth of thought her fist had already struck against the wood in rapid succession.

It'd been, what, months since the last time they'd seen each other? And, if it hadn't been for their parents' constant nagging, that time might've extended off to a year. Maybe more.

It was just another way Rocket had fucked with her life.

But she knew it wasn't far to him. His brother had been the one to commit the crime, and what, Caden was supposed to be to face it's consequences all on his own?

"Of course," she murmured, trying to stay focus on the mixture in front of her. It was taking on a new shade, indicating it's readiness. "We're friends, aren't we?"

Rory's nose scrunched at the thought; she always hated how they made her tongue and lips burn. Still, for a friend, she was willing to support the vile snack, especially given the fact that said friend was JAMES BAKER .

"Hmmm, I'm not too picky. Maybe some sour gummy worms? Or twizzlers!"

When studying, those were typically her go-to.

Without warning, a sudden beeping blared out from her side pocket, following the tune of a popular shoujo anime opening. Rory immediately reached for it, color splashing her entire face as she scrambled to silence the call.

But not before seeing the Caller ID.

"Oh no! I forgot I had something to do today. Sorry, James, I'll talk to you later, okay?"

Off she went.

"Could we?"

The sheer excitement of the suggestion grabbed her attention with such sudden vigor she was half expecting to hear her neck completely snapping in half.

"Oh, yeah, true!"

Would be a waste to spend their entire day just going around in circles. Even if the view was this pretty.

The ferris wheel's pod slid back down the opposite side of the track, settling down with a loud hiss from metal scraping against metal. A second later, the door threw itself open.

"Since I picked the ferris wheel, you get first dibs on the stalls," she smiled, gesturing over to the colorful games and food stalls dotting their surroundings.
