Grunts began filtering into the facility, many of them he recognized only by their dossiers or in passing. But one in particular stood out to him, and not only because of her red hair and eyepatch. [break][break]

"Discipline training," Zev said to Hitoshi Inoue. Despite his aura, his hands were casually tucked into his pants pockets. "I need some grunts to assist with doling out punishments." [break][break]

Finally, Zev looked into Nenet's face. Her expression bore a mix of emotions he'd seen before, but at that moment, did not know how to name. But her words registered, and he responded with a simple nod of his head. [break][break]

Their apartment was empty and dark. Disconcertingly, the front door was unlocked. Zev realized that the Megalopolans had forced their way inside to kidnap him while he'd been asleep; that was the only explanation for his successful capture. Thankfully, the lock itself was not broken. [break][break]

The mechanism's click was deafening in the silence. [break][break]

Wordlessly, Zev shrugged out of the green uniform and shoved it into the trash can. When the other prisoners had discovered their belongings on the ship, he hadn't bothered collecting his pajamas. The only item of import he'd taken back with him was his tungsten wedding band. [break][break]

He stared at it now, black against the pale skin of his left hand. It meant something important, he knew, but as he lingered in that dissonance of what he could be and what he was, all human significance felt so far away.

Zev turned his gaze skyward, toward the brutal darkness that spanned from horizon to horizon. Above them, stars glittered with the cold dispassion reflected in his eyes. When he spoke, his voice carried a note of dreadful purpose. [break][break]

"It will come." [break][break]

Standing there atop the monument of Lesser Megalopolis' destruction, he let himself be consumed by the psychic link connecting him to his patron. Immediately, his consciousness rushed far across time and space, seeking. His heartbeat thudded in perfect rhythm with the movements of his god. [break][break]

With sudden abruptness, Necrozma turned its prismatic gaze upon him. A cascading tide of black crystal spread across the Devourer's exposed skin, clusters forming even along his cheeks and jaw. His blue eyes shone pale with starlight. [break][break]

In the sky above them, a thin, vertical line of light formed. Then it expanded with sudden violence as enormous obsidian claws ripped apart the very fabric of Ultra Space. The colossal, angular body of the Destroyer of Worlds stepped through, dwarfing the tower. Its prism-like eyes flashed with the whole spectrum of colors. [break][break]

Zev's entire body thrummed, each cell aligned to the presence of his patron. Necrozma rumbled in answer, an alien noise that shook the very air. Sensing the oddity of the gathering, it leaned closer, casting an ominous shadow upon the humans and Pokémon that had come to petition it.

"Good," was all Zev said when Kokou confirmed that his identity hadn't been revealed. Team Rocket put great importance on the anonymity of their lower ranks. It made infiltrating the general public that much easier. [break][break]

The flash of multi-colored lights in the narrow spaces between buildings confirmed the Rookidee's report. Zev continued the drive toward Lilycove's harbor, undeterred. [break][break]

"We just need to get through one blockade, reach the docks, and ditch the car." [break][break]

Ahead of them, a line of white vehicles and flashing lights cut off the main boulevard to the pier. Without slowing down, Zev whistled a quick pair of notes, one low, one high. Smoke disappeared from the back seat in a puff of darkness. [break][break]

Embedded in the general's wristwatch, a Key Stone glowed. The same light engulfed the Gengar as he reappeared in front of the startled officers. Within seconds, he MEGA EVOLVED, his body expanding to span the entire street. His maw opened wide, a chorus of otherworldly wails mixing with frightened screams from the police. Guns fired harmless bullets into the specter. [break][break]

Then his jaws closed around the blockade, cars and all. [break][break]

Smoke returned to his normal shape and size by the time Zev's car neared. The ghost popped back into the vehicle, burped, and giggled. His master paid him no mind as he maneuvered the car to the edge of a pier and cut the engine. [break][break]

Zev shoved open the driver's side door and stepped out. "Take the jewelry and go. A smuggling ship's docked on pier 3. It will take you back to Sootopolis." [break][break]

Sirens wailed, distant at first, but growing louder as they neared. In the pale light of a nearby lamppost, the skin of the general's face, neck, and hands disappeared beneath a sudden bloom of crystals that hid his features like supernatural armor. The shard-like facets were so black, they appeared to consume all surrounding light. [break][break]

When Zev spoke, his voice carried an undercurrent of alien reverb. "I'll take care of the police."

Zev tossed the bag of jewelry into the back seat with his Pokémon. He made a mental note to send Kokou to howard slayte later, so the admin could walk the grunt through selling the stolen goods on the black market. [break][break]

He listened to the summary of events with a stoic expression, not even frowning at the mention of the additional security. Many places with valuable objects had such systems in place. Part of the test that night had been whether the boy knew that basic knowledge or not. [break][break]

When offered the cigarette, Zev glanced at it but soon refocused on the dark road. "I do, but not in cars. Roll your window down, at least," he said, his tone neutral with apathy. "Did the guards at the store see your face?"

Smoke the Gengar frowned when Kokou actually turned to speak with the security guards. What a cocky guy! Did he think this was a movie after all? [break][break]

It didn't matter. The grunt's Rookidee smashed through the window, carrying the dizzy Riolu with her. When it looked like Kokou himself would fling himself to his death, Smoke snatched him, his Rookiedee, and Zev's Rotom with PHANTOM FORCE, bringing them safely to the sidewalk below. [break][break]

The Riolu, on the other hand, fared much worse. [break][break]

Smoke waved a hand in Kokou's face to get the boy's attention, then swooped away in the direction where Zev waited. The Ghost-types melded with the shadows or surrounding technology to hide their passing. Whether Kokou stuck to the back alleys or not was up to him. [break][break]

Once the grunt was back in the car with Zev, the general pulled out of the intersection and started the short drive to the city's harbor. "How did it go?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the road.

Zev had not been to the top of Lesser Megalo Tower in months, not since that fateful day last November when he came face-to-face with Necrozma. Still, he remembered the winding route upwards. [break][break]

Groaning, mindless Megalopolans and wild Ultra Beasts had refilled the corridors of the tower since his last foray, but these he easily dispatched. He was not alone, either; fern delaney joined him on the ascent. Between their powers and their Pokémon, they kept the horrors of Lesser Megalopolis at bay. [break][break]

Zev recalled his Illumina Chandelure, who had lit up the path for them in the darkness. Then he turned to Fern. "Ready whenever you are."
