Zev arrived early to the training facility to check its construction. As the project fell under war preparations, his duties involved reviewing it for any deficits or places of improvement. Satisfied, he then spoke with Underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli and Admin Bee (BARNABY FINCH), in case they had any questions. [break][break]

Naturally, he was going to stress test the training program himself. [break][break]

Grunts began filtering into the facility, many of them he recognized only by their dossiers or in passing. But one in particular stood out to him, and not only because of her red hair and eyepatch. [break][break]

"I didn't expect to see you here," Zev said to Aurelie Lefevre. "Who are you hoping to test your skills against today?"

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]It was difficult for Aurelie to meet Zev's gaze without remembering how he'd looked the last time she'd seen him: standing tall and fearsome beside his Necrozma amidst the ruins of the crashed Megalopolan ship, his body sheathed in crystal even blacker than the lightless city around them. It was even more difficult not to shudder and cower in fear like the Megalopolans had when he spoke to her.

But she managed it, swallowing hard and keeping her voice level. "Well, for a long time, I barely knew anything about Legendary Pokemon and I thought I didn't have to. Then, I started encountering more and more of them, one after another. Both on my side and...not."

The redhead shrugged. "There's not many ways you can practice fighting against a Legendary safely. So, I figured I might as well seize this chance while I can."

Internally, she was surprised she was able to sound as cool and impassive as she did, in the face of Zev's ever-unnerving presence. Aurelie gratefully looked away from him toward the waiting underboss and admin with their respective Legendary partners. An aura of competence, power, and danger radiated from all four of them like heat waves from a glowing forge.

Pursing her lips in thought, the redhead absently pulled out a Pokeball and released her Tinkaton to stand beside her. "Let's face off against...Wo-Chien. I've long been curious about its Ruination move."

A brief flash of rueful amusement glinted in Aurelie's eye as she added, while gesturing for her Tinkaton to ready itself, "Not that I think that much could stand against you and your Legendary...ally, Zev, when it comes down to it."

Underboss Fiorelli appears indifferent to your choice, but steps forward all the same. Within moments she releases Wo-Chien onto the battlefield. [break][break]

Vines and leaves cascade from its snail-like shell, which gleams with a mysterious, earthy luster. Its ochre eyes convey a sinister intelligence as it watches both you and your Pokémon. After taking stock of its opponent, Wo-Chien begins the battle — not with a bombastic assault, but by opening its slime-coated mouth to release POISON GAS onto the field. [break][break]

Zev nodded approvingly and turned his gaze upon Elisabeth Fiorelli and Wo-Chien. "Smart thinking," he said. [break][break]

Neither Zev nor the other leaders of Team Rocket knew what Ruination exactly entailed. The lack of information frustrated him, but he got the impression from conversations with Elisabeth Fiorelli that she did not know, either. [break][break]

That perhaps she and jayden cross were merely ignorant vessels. [break][break]

"You're right. Fortunately, this is just a training exercise." [break][break]

Still, a dreadful atmosphere descended upon the underground facility as a wormhole opened above the gathered humans and their Pokémon. Zev's shard of Necrozma emerged from the gash in space-time, scanning its surroundings with the keen eyes of a predator seeking prey. [break][break]

Elisabeth Fiorelli and Wo-Chien stepped forward and began their assault. As the POISON GAS spewed forth, the Necrozma shard remained high above it to blast the Ruinous Beast with SIGNAL BEAM. [break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]As the Wo-Chien emerged, infusing the space with a caustic aura of bitterness and resentment, and Zev summoned his Necrozma in all its otherworldly majesty and menace, Aurelie didn't even bother to hide her shiver this time. She'd been right; an ordinary woman and her Tinkaton was completely outmatched. If this were a real fight, Aurelie doubted she'd make any impact at all.

Thankfully, though, this wasn't a real fight. She was here to learn, not to win. And powerful though they were, even these Legendary Pokemon and their formidable trainers had weaknesses to exploit.

Huh, I didn't expect him to open with an attack right away, though, she thought, squinting her eye closed as the Necrozma fired a brilliant beam of energy. But maybe I should have! I was going to open with a defensive Protect, but... Well, at least that Poison Gas won't do much to us!

Turning to her Tinkaton, the red-haired smith smiled fondly at the Pokemon, with whom she'd always shared a special bond due to their shared affinity as fellow female metalsmiths. "I guess we're going in! Let's follow up the Necrozma by playing a bit rough, shall we?"

Nodding obligingly, the Tinkaton advanced under the cover of the Signal Beam and struck the Wo-Chien with a Play Rough. If Zev's attack didn't do it, surely this should help! Aurelie thought triumphantly.

Raising her voice over the din of battle, Aurelie called out to Zev, "Should we plan out what we do next round? Assuming there even is a next round, that is? Or should we just keep doing what we've already done?"

After all, they do always say that the best defense is a good offense, right?

Though the toxic miasma proves to be an unavoidable hindrance, your offensive approach shows your underlying cunning: to finish this swiftly before the poison can completely overtake your Pokémon. [break][break]

Unfortunately for you, Wo-Chien is quick to protect itself. It erects a SPIKY SHIELD of sorts, with wooden stakes suddenly jutting out from its shell and even the surrounding ground to act as a barrier against any oncoming attack. However, a perceptive trainer might notice a fleeting moment of opportunity after Wo-Chien lowers its shield but before it can react or continue with an attack itself.

"When it comes to a Pokémon like Wo-Chien that specialize in controlling the battlefield through indirect attacks, you need to strike it down hard and fast," Zev yelled back. "If you let the battle drag out for too long, you will lose to the attrition." [break][break]

Though he did not believe in failure or loss for himself, he was well aware of how they plagued others. Several grunts took his strategy advice, shouting commands to their own Pokémon to keep up the assault. However, the SPIKY SHIELD repelled many of them. [break][break]

"Keep an eye out for an opening!" Zev instructed, his own critical gaze pinned on the Ruinous Beast. [break][break]

The shard of Necrozma fired another SIGNAL BEAM, attempting to burn off the wooden stakes protecting Wo-Chien. [break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie winced when the Wo-Chien managed to protect itself with a SPIKY SHIELD, which would negate her Tinkaton's attacks. Yet, she couldn't help agreeing with Zev's assessment that continuous offense did seem like the most effective way to deal with the Ruinous Pokemon. If it felt like it needed to protect itself, then their attacks surely were having an important impact.

But what can I do against that shield? she wondered, watching Zev blast another SIGNAL BEAM at the Wo-Chien. I'd rather not risk my Tinkaton getting hurt for nothing...

Normally, she would probably use PROTECT in an instance like this and wait until the other Pokemon struck first. However, that wouldn't put any pressure on the Wo-Chien at all. While other grunts flung themselves at the monstrous snail, the redhead racked her brain for ideas.

In the end, Aurelie used the only option she could think of. "Astucieux, let's try THUNDER WAVE!" she called. "But try to stay at a distance!"

As the Tinkaton prepared to unleash the stunning sound wave, Aurelie looked up hopefully toward Zev. "It's not much, but maybe it'll paralyze the Wo-Chien. Assuming it hits, of course! I figure if it does, it'll help a lot to slow it down and give us space to defeat it quickly."

And maybe I should teach my Tinkaton something else reliable, because this surely won't be the last time this situation comes up... But that was a concern for the future, not for this training fight.
