The recording made by Naomi Sato's Unown was irrefutable. kyle lopez was dead. News reports made no mention of a recovered body, and when Zev went to Mt. Chimney himself, all he found were battlefield scars upon the landscape. [break][break]

He should have been satisfied. A loss of this level was a catastrophic setback to the League, ensuring Team Rocket's success in its future operations. Ensuring his own success, and Necrozma's, in their private plans. [break][break]

Instead, he could not help feeling like something was amiss. The doubt tugged at his mind, accompanied with the fleeting sense of words spoken a long time ago, in a place far from Hoenn. [break][break]

"You're talking to Ho-oh's Avatar. I don't die. I respawn." [break][break]

Zev stood within the alien landscape of the Border. Rocky formations floated through a twilit sky. A gentle breeze ruffled his hair and clothing, carrying with it the soft whispers of the dead. He did not know if their murmurings were real or trickery caused by the realm itself. [break][break]

Nevertheless, they prompted him to speak into the quiet desolation. [break][break]

Lunala's Ultra Burst was both beautiful and sinister: the sky bleeding orange-red, rain turning to fire, the storm clouds evaporating with each flap of the Moone Pokémon's wings. [break][break]

Zev felt Nenet's urgent tug and dove to the side, seconds before the Z-Move smashed into her Celesteela. The Ultra Beast's agonized scream reverberated through the rocky landscape. His shard of Necrozma leaped through the air at Lunala, a SHADOW CLAW raking toward it in retaliation. [break][break]

How to calm the celestial bat? Zev's mind searched for the answer at a frantic pace, based on everything he'd read in reports. His gaze swept the great bat's body, noticing wounds not yet healed. [break][break]

"It's injured from its last fight against Necrozma and probably in a lot of pain," he yelled back. "We'll go on the defensive while you try to heal and talk to it." [break][break]

As soon as those words left his mouth, his shard halted before the ghostly attack could land. Zev released Nenet and dashed toward the shard, who swooped down to meet him. [break][break]

Lunala did not take its eyes off them as it unleashed a MOONBLAST, throwing both of them to the ground. Pieces of black metal scattered across the lunar soil.

A quick movement across the cold floor caught Zev's eye. He raised his gaze just as another masked prisoner knelt down beside him—one who happened to know his last name. His eyes narrowed, but only for a moment. [break][break]

"Delaney?" Zev hissed back, surprised. If fern delaney was there, then how many other members of Team Rocket had been captured? And how many of them were upper brass? The Beast scanned the congregation with this revelation in mind, trying to identify others he knew. [break][break]

At that moment, their warden called for a stop to the work. The Megalopolan spokesperson declared that the Never-Rot, whatever it was, had chosen to reward their ward for good behavior. Zev allowed himself to relax, but only by a fraction. [break][break]

The Tera Crystals embedded into the ceiling glimmered, reflecting two other locations with their own prisoners. He watched the televised violence with clinical detachment. Leaning toward Neffatari Nzingha, he surreptitiously squeezed her hand in a gesture of praise. [break][break]

"Smart thinking earlier," he whispered to her as hammers smashed Pokéballs into countless broken pieces. [break][break]

Someone shouted for the prisoners of the Ugly Ward to come to the center. In the shuffle, Zev found himself between Nenet and another woman (annalise henderson). Their Toxic Chains fused together, forcing them into a line. [break][break]

When it was time to vote, voices rose up all around him. He recognized some of them at once: Navy with the feverish idiocy, Elisabeth Fiorelli and THEO BECKETT, oscar clayton and Aurelie Lefevre. A couple people he didn't recognize declared their objection to voting (Yuina Higashi and John Sullivan), prompting him to scowl at them from behind his mask. [break][break]

"Idiots," he said, his tone harsh and cold. "If you think abstaining or voting for yourselves is going to achieve anything, you might as well kill yourselves now with your own hands. You're a waste of breath and space, and we don't need the likes of you to fuck us over." [break][break]

Turning his head, he looked the bird Pokémon in the eye. [break][break]

"Dummy, Weakling—they're all the same to me, so I vote for DUMMY."

The electricity sparking in Fern's palm drew Zev's gaze. The way it crackled was enticing in a way he hadn't considered before. Pausing for a moment, he snatched the electricity out of the air with his mind and absorbed it into his body. [break][break]

A small warmth flared in his chest, accompanied by an equally small amount of rejuvenation. "Thanks," he said to the admin, though his expression remained cold and detached. [break][break]

When they reconvened after searching the police station, Zev exhaled a sigh, his hands on his hips. "It's a big city, so the other Tapus could be anywhere. We can come back another day with more people. A bigger hunting party." [break][break]

After all, the more power Team Rocket had at their fingertips, the greater the advantage they had over the League. And while Zev himself was no longer interested in the petty feud between the two organizations, carrying out his plans was certainly easier when Team Rocket had the upper hand.

Zev took stock of the situation inside the security shed with a quick, sharp glance. One guard groggily coming out of consciousness, a second guard screaming as flames consumed him. Ameena bleeding from her shoulder, her Kirlia glowing with psychic power. [break][break]

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the trinket she'd given him prior to their arrival. He neither knew its meaning nor cared to find out; he simply tossed it onto the body of the security guard who wasn't on fire, moments before teleportation took him away. [break][break]

Now safe, Zev turned to Ameena. "If that was to your satisfaction, then I expect the second half of my payment within three days," he said. "Send it to the same account as the first half." [break][break]

Once he had her confirmation, he started off to the nearest human gym, where he'd stashed a change of clothes. There, he'd also shave off his beard and wash the gel out of his hair. [break][break]

Within thirty minutes, the man who'd killed Raju Kaur had disappeared forever.

A twinge of annoyance ran through Zev when Soyeon admitted she hadn't made any progress in her investigation. It did not matter to him that she'd worked hard at it; a lack of results meant failure in his eyes. How fortunate, then, that he'd made the same request of others. [break][break]

"Work," he replied brusquely. "Operations in the Giant Chasm Area Zero have been a high priority for me, as well." [break][break]

They walked through the empty halls of New Mauville. Zev was accustomed to the eerie quiet, having visited several times before. His Type: Null led the way, its great head swiveling this way and that way. [break][break]

Slow movement in the shadows of a side hall revealed a docile Probopass. Both man and abomination ignored it.

She appeared amenable to the compromise, though he thought his complaint about other blacksmiths' quality would encourage her to take on the full order of knives herself. He didn't show it on his face, however, and nodded at her returned offer. [break][break]

"Write their names down for me and we'll look into them." [break][break]

Only then did the man take the time to gaze around the workshop. Though it was not his first visit to Aurelie's forge, he was still as unfamiliar with the forging process as ever. Various tools, metals, and machinery were arranged in a way only she understood. [break][break]

"Speaking of commissions," Zev said, "how are you progressing with the order from our Calyrex?" [break][break]

Intel had informed Team Rocket's upper brass, at least, that another Calyrex dwelled in Ever Grande City. If the assassin had to guess, both Pokémon would soon fight each other—if their respective organizations didn't attempt to pit them against each other in combat first.

Zev brow furrowed by a fraction. He didn't know what Elisabeth meant by Theo's "preferred methods of persuasion," but regardless, he felt reassured that Nenet would not succumb to them. Her will was ironclad, her devotion to Zev tested by trials more difficult than a single, meddling man. [break][break]

Instead, the Beast responded to Elisabeth's next words. "I'm not telling you to be her friend." He didn't know if his wife even had friends. "Effusiveness would just irritate her, anyway." [break][break]

Then a thought occurred to Zev, one that drew his mouth into an amused smirk. "Actually, you two might get along, in that case." [break][break]

It was how he and Neffatari Nzingha got along so well originally, before circumstances entangled them in each other's lives: engaging only in what was necessary, and not caring at all otherwise.

Zev was unsurprised to learn that Nenet had already met THEO BECKETT. Team Rocket's upper brass, including the underbosses, regularly met with recruits and newer grunts. He'd anticipated Theo would do the same with Nenet—not out of any genuine interest but to use her to his advantage. [break][break]

To use her against Zev, if necessary. [break][break]

Her hands warmed his skin as they briefly caressed his shoulders; unconsciously, he leaned into her touch. But when she commented on the exact nature of Theo's prying, Zev's anger flared, fueled by his territorial possessiveness. [break][break]

Lightly grasping Nenet's wrist and pulling her close, he lowered his voice to a dangerous rumble. She would know his ire was not directed at her, but at the potential trespass of their privacy. "What about our marriage?" he asked.

Zev raced up the stairs to the hospital's second floor, skidding to a halt when he laid eyes upon the scene unfolding there. [break][break]

bryan delarosa held aloft, bloodsoaked and raging at Xerneas. The magnificent, blue deer walked toward Zev in all its stately dignity, its eyes glowing with psychic power. The Tree of Life behind them had withered; vines spread from it along the hospital floor, dead and useless. [break][break]

And beyond that stood Isaac Merlo, the great beast Suicune at his side. For a split second, Zev locked eyes with his former pupil. Then the boy and his pet were gone, escaping through the broken windows in a gust of cold winter wind. [break][break]

Necrozma's Avatar turned to face Xerneas. "Where are you taking him?" he asked the Life Pokémon, referring to Bryan. "He will die without medical attention." [break][break]

Neither empathy nor worry colored Zev's voice. Instead, there was only a detached, clinical observation.

"That information hasn't been disclosed yet," Zev said calmly. In truth, even he did not know; the full scope of whatever was brewing in declan walsh's mind had not been made public even to the Rocket Beasts. [break][break]

It was a restriction that would have irked him in the past. With his new understanding and perspective, however, it was merely another trivial matter ensconced in human politics. Whether Team Rocket's leadership saw fit to include him in their planning meant little to him. [break][break]

Whatever transpired between the crime syndicate and the League was meager compared to his greater schemes. [break][break]

"And anyway, Pokémon will be made available as well. Many more than knives, if you're so worried. These," he gestured to the paper, "are merely last resorts." [break][break]

However, Zev inclined his head toward Aurelie in concession of her first point. "You are right about one thing: we can't have you ignoring the shop and risking your civilian identity. In that case, let us know how many knives you can make, and we'll take the rest of the order to other blacksmiths." [break][break]

With a sigh, he added, almost as an afterthought, "The quality won't be as good as yours, but we'll make do."

Some months had passed since Zev last spoke with soyeon kwan. He had issued her instructions to gather intelligence on a sun-like symbol he'd seen in another universe. Beyond that, however, he'd had no other use for her. [break][break]

But the crossing of paths again was inevitable. Team Rocket needed more war machines for their unending conquest, and Soyeon's name was on the list of grunts interested in assembling their own. And Zev, who already owned one, knew where to look for parts. [break][break]

"How has your research been coming along?" the Rocket Beast asked as the pair entered the underground complex of New Mauville. There, they could speak freely away from prying eyes while they hunted. "Regarding Ultra Space and the sun symbol I showed you." [break][break]

"Four o'clock!" [break][break]

Zev whirled, shoving away the still-warm corpse of General Kaur and brandishing his knife, every muscle tense with anticipation. Thankfully, his Gengar intercepted the Zoroark, smashing it across the face with BRICK BREAK. Its master, a man in the black uniform of Kaur's security team, stopped short of the clash and pointed a gun at Zev. [break][break]

Shots fired, both in the kitchen and in the assassin's earpiece. Ameena screamed as Zev slammed backward into an industrial refrigerator. The bullets had torn his uniform but shattered on the crystalline caparace beneath. [break][break]

The guard stared, flabbergasted, as Zev coughed and simply righted himself. [break][break]

It was time to leave. [break][break]

Zev whistled a sharp, high note. Disengaging from the Zoroark, Smoke yanked himself and his master out of the kitchen with another PHANTOM FORCE. This time, they were outside of the mansion, the security shed in view. Zev dashed toward it, but Smoke took them to the door of the small building in the blink of an eye. [break][break]

Without missing a beat, the man threw the door open.

The obvious disdain Elisabeth showed toward THEO BECKETT filled Zev with quiet smugness, though he kept it from his face as he nodded along with her indignation. Her reaction was all the confirmation he needed to ensure she would be useful against her fellow underboss. [break][break]

"A little similar, but he doesn't behave erratically around me. If anything, he tries to be a 'proper Rocket role model.'" Zev hooked the first two fingers of both hands in the air in the common gesture for mockery. "He's tried threatening me once, but I gave him a warning in turn." [break][break]

A huff escaped the Beast then, an exasperated sound. "But I wouldn't put it past him to try getting close to Nenet. She's new to the organization, and we're all encouraged to provide mentorship to recruits, aren't we?" [break][break]

Zev shot Elisabeth a meaningful look. Get to her first, it said.

Zev felt the pressure Illeana exerted against his own control and shifted to match her. Thanks to months of practice, the movement was natural, a simple adjustment. A distant corner of his mind acknowledged that the push and pull between them was as old as the universe itself. That this dance was, in fact, nothing new but the persistent testament to their immortality. [break][break]

"You know nothing about us," he remarked, taking no offense by her statement. Her Avatarship was newly minted, as was her understanding of the greater machinations of the universes. Human biases and misconceptions still tainted her perspective; of this, he was sure. [break][break]

"If you think our wrath is the same wrath of mortals, or that our wants are the same as theirs, then you are sorely mistaken." [break][break]

Above them, the titans of the cosmos threw each other off. Galaxies rotated to accommodate the disturbance, a thousand stars casting light upon their ancient bodies. The shards of Palkia and Necrozma circled each other from a wary distance, as if searching for new weaknesses or openings. [break][break]

Zev saw this pause in the fight and frowned inwardly. The two Pokémon bore considerable wounds. That Palkia's strength had matched up against Necrozma's was unexpected. Briefly, he considered deploying lasers against the Spatial Pokémon and its Avatar, but that would leave both of him and his patron vulnerable. [break][break]

It was time to reevaluate and make a new plan. [break][break]

Fixing Illeana with a stare that conveyed the chilly depths of the void itself, the Devourer shoved against her grasp with his mind. He switched up his own hold, relinquishing the threads binding her to the planet and focusing on the ones tied only to himself. Then he kicked off the ground and rose to join his Necrozma shard. [break][break]

"Arguing here is a waste of our time," he declared. "We'll be watching you, Alchemist. Do not believe for a moment that we won't live up to our promise." [break][break]

A dome of darkness manifested, engulfing the area. All lights within it extinguished; no light from outside it entered. By the time the darkness dissipated naturally, Zev and his shard were gone.
