Zev caught the movement of the cape in the periphery of his vision. His head jerked up, expecting to see Gwyar descending from an expert leap. But the fabric fell in all the wrong ways—too slowly, and at an awkward angle. Belatedly, Zev realized it wasn't attached to any man at all. [break][break]

Gwyar's resplendent sword sheared through the air, shining a blinding SPOTLIGHT upon Zev. A moment later, the blade struck him— [break][break]

But did not break. Zev felt the metal curve ever-so-slightly around his body, absorbing the impact of the collision before catapulting back into the air. [break][break]

Unfortunately, he did not see where it went; the brilliant light blinded him a second time. A sharp exhale of annoyance escaped him before he reached for the light. Abruptly, it siphoned into him, filling him with warmth and refueling his energy.

Zev's Gengar descended from the ceiling, upside-down, to greet Tempest. Ears wiggling, Smoke cackled at the Rocket Beast before swooping over to hover above his master's chair. [break][break]

"I did," Zev said, ignoring the ghost. He gestured to the empty armchair situated on the opposite side of his desk, a silent invitation to sit. [break][break]

"Considering the information Bosses Walsh and Monroe gave us about our upcoming operations, I want to make sure we maximize our efforts in planning our strategy." [break][break]

Setting aside the biography of a well-decorated Kanto General, Zev folded his hands in his lap. He sat back, blue eyes assessing Tempest critically. "You want to be part of the defense of Sootopolis, correct?" [break][break]

The other man had said as much on the encrypted group chat, but Zev wanted to be sure that Tempest's decision had not changed only a few days after its conclusion.

Hawkins' exception for elementary-aged children was unsurprising, considering the information about his own offspring in his file. In fact, most people did not wish to harm kids, even within Team Rocket. [break][break]

A weakness, Zev thought, though he did not show it in his face. Maintaining an air of indifference, he collected the papers into a manila folder and closed it. [break][break]

"Our organization is gearing up for large-scale operations in Petalburg and Mossdeep," the Beast said, resting his hands on top of the folder and lacing his fingers together. "We also anticipate a League strike on Sootopolis at some point in the future." [break][break]

"We could use men of your expertise on either front to provide medical support to our agents and defenders. Does that sound like work that interests you?"

FAULT LINE

zev's curry entry

THREAD SUMMARY:
Zev returns home to share the news of his promotion to God General with his wife, Neffatari Nzingha. When she asks him what it means, he reveals Team Rocket's plan to bring war to Hoenn through conquest—including an assault on Mossdeep City, their home and her place of employment. A fight ensues over the importance of the Mossdeep Space Center and its Observatory. Eventually, the couple make up, coming to an agreement about how to move forward together.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?:
Zev and Nenet have largely stayed out of each other's professional lives up to this point, an unspoken agreement that helped their relationship flourish in its early stages. Now, however, the situation has changed. Not only does Nenet wish to be helpful to Zev, but he takes her needs and wants into consideration for his own plans. And though this revelation comes in the wake of miscommunication and flared tempers, the couple does eventually reach an understanding about the changed nature of their relationship.

This does not bode well for the rest of Hoenn. In his anger, Zev confesses to Nenet that she is the only person who matters to him in the whole universe. She recognizes this admission as more significant and real than any declaration of love from him. In fact, it is a more entangling emotion than love, as Laika wrote:

The confession of sorts rests heavy in her stomach; she was, truly, never to be rid of him even if she wanted, but he would let his pretty bauble be happy in his fangs while she held his leash. A hard enough yank would garner his attention, for better or worse.

She can't decide who that is worse for. Herself, or those she turns his eyes to.

Nenet and Zev do not try to make each other better. They care for each other, yes, but they also take advantage of each other. They make each other worse. And no thread has showcased that as well as this one does.

As always, I thank Laika for collaborating with me on this nuanced, complex, problematic relationship between two people. It has allowed me to explore a depth to Zev that would not be possible without Nenet, which I think provides a nice contrast to the other parts of him. Besides that, Laika's writing is always a treat to read, and I am honored to write with her so often!

Zev watched Nenet's reaction to his words, his calculating eyes taking in every minute change in her expression. Her golden stare was like glass, reflecting his own close assessment as she processed his heated confession. The words had spilled out thoughtlessly, but they weren't untrue. [break][break]

Finally, she smiled. Her hands coaxed him closer, their familiar warmth at the back of his neck fanning a different kind of flame in him. The last of his anger seeped out at her promise, replaced by the intense need to claim what was his. [break][break]

"As soon as I know, you'll know," Zev said, dipping his head to kiss Nenet on the corner of her mouth, a subtle tease. "And I'll work the defense of the Space Center itself into my plans. You can look over them, too, if that will put your mind at ease." [break][break]

One clawed hand pressed into the small of her back while the other ghosted up the curve of her spine, careful not to cut her with their sharpness.

Contrary to Nenet's earlier accusation, Zev was not stupid. He recognized the threat in her words, however mild; he saw the determination in her steady gaze. Even she, after all this time, after claims of being a team, was willing to leave him if the conditions were right. [break][break]

The bitter agony of Caleb Harcourt's betrayal had lessened with time, but it flared anew within Zev at the thought of Nenet betraying him, too. His grip on her hand tightened as he reached with his free hand to grasp her waist. [break][break]

"No," he rumbled, the single word uttered with a sudden, impassioned ferocity. Claws bit into her clothing as he pulled her close, until the front of her body was flush against his. [break][break]

"You're not going anywhere." Zev's voice was low and rough, a possessive growl thick with emotion. His face, so close to her own now, grew more monstrous as crystals continued their spread across his skin. [break][break]

In their darkness, his eyes flashed with defiance. [break][break]

"Don't you get it?" A hint of exasperation entered his tone. "You're the only person on this whole planet who matters to me. In this whole fucking universe. You're not leaving my side, Nenet." [break][break]

If it meant protecting a building from destruction, then so be it.

The earth between Gwyar and Zev exploded outward with enough force to fling them apart. The sudden attack—because it was a Sygna Suit attack, he was certain—caught Zev by surprise; he had no recourse but to root himself to the planet. Grasping the threads of gravity with his mind, he strengthened the pull on his body to keep himself from flying. [break][break]

zev can manipulate the gravitational field in his immediate vicinity, allowing him to change the planet's gravitational pull on everything within range, including himself. [break][break]

he can ascend to high places (but not fly), control any falls to the ground, and make himself immovable when grounded. he can also cause other objects, people, and pokemon to rise into the air or force them to the ground.

At the same time, he twisted away, one arm raised to protect his eyes from the cascade of water and sand. An unnecessary reaction. In that body, he did not have eyes that needed protection. [break][break]

Still, flinching away from the sudden burst bought time for Gwyar. As the curtain of water fell, Zev whirled around, seeking the Gym Leader beyond the gash he'd ripped into the shoreline. [break][break]

Nearby on the battlefield, Golurk peeled away from its well-defended opponent to check if its master needed its assistance. The golem was trained to collect Zev and retreat in an emergency situation. [break][break]

When it saw the void-black silhouette still standing in the shallows, it turned its attention back to Gwyar's Aegislash. Golurk's frame crackled with electricity as it readied another THUNDERBOLT for the moment the animated sword lowered its guard.

As Grigori disappeared into the darkness, Zev put the comms device into his ear. The blue-white glow of a tablet's screen cast a soft illumination upon the interior of the car. When Grigori's voice crackled over the comms device, Zev already had the building's blueprints open in his lap. [break][break]

"You'll find yourself in a hallway with storage and maintenance rooms to your right. Head to your left instead, past a break room and an overnight kennel for Pokémon," he instructed the grunt. "There will be a door for records on your left." [break][break]

Raising his gaze from the tablet, Zev scanned the alley for any movement. The shadows remained still.

Zev gave Cillian a single nod of his head, agreeing with the sentiment. How fortuitous the timing had been, as if an unseen hand were lining up pieces for the war to come. [break][break]

"Moving in," he answered, following the gesture down the hallway with his eyes. "Do you know where that unused office is? The one that once belonged to either Killian Decker or Martín del Mar." [break][break]

No word had come back to Team Rocket about the whereabouts or activities of the two former underbosses. Now that so much time had passed since their disappearances, Zev was certain they had been consigned to the dust of history. [break][break]

Better men had risen to take their place, anyhow.

Nenet's fingers brushed against the terrible surface of the Wishing Star, and everything went black. Zev steeled himself for the vision that followed: Eternatus bearing down upon their planet. Though a Deoxys defeated it, Zev felt in his bones that the fight was not over. [break][break]

He knew how much Necrozma desired Eternatus' power and energy. He knew with absolute certainty they would clash again. And when that time came, he would be there alongside his patron. [break][break]

When he turned his gaze back to the Wishing Star, it pulsed with a brilliant, dreadful light. The scenario disintegrated before his very eyes. He couldn't tell if that was simply the scenario shifting or if it was thanks to a release of Dynergy, no matter how simulated. [break][break]

Either way, Zev extended a hand toward Nenet, silently beckoning her to return to him.

Zev's expression remained deadpan in the face of Priam's boast. Though he did not know the Beast well, he'd anticipated this response, somehow. [break][break]

"Then I expect only success from you," Zev said, the steel in his voice implying what might happen if Priam didn't rise to meet those expectations. Fortunately, Priam's career record promised a high chance of the man's victory. [break][break]

Zev's eyes slid back to the map. "Do you have any questions for me about the operation?"

It did not matter if intel and logistics weren't Rainy's "thing." Team Rocket would find a place for the hacker in the war to come. Zev continued to ignore the grunt's remarks until he raised a relevant question. [break][break]

"We plan to take it over," the general replied. "However, there's always the chance the League believes it's better to cut off its own hand than give it up to us." [break][break]

Everyone knew well how that organization made foolish decisions. The recent conference in Slateport City was a good example of such incompetence. [break][break]

"That's where all this comes in," Zev continued, gesturing to the server racks surrounding them. "These next few weeks should give us enough time to create and maintain a backup of the Space Center's data. We can use it to expand our own space research facility, in the event we lose the Space Center itself." [break][break]

It wouldn't come down to that, however. He'd make sure of it.
