A bouquet.

Well, someone had to give a damn she was dead. Sure as hell wasn't Ash. When Theo approaches, something felt different. This wasn't a mentor and his student, but oddly more relaxing. Or maybe, that was Ash coming to terms with it. Letting it go. He hated someone more for once than Theo.

"Yeah." He says quietly.

Awkwardness sets in. Eerie silence. Ash getting up from a seated spot. "Mom is buried here." Short response, laced with a stoical tone. Not Ashley's go to. But he at least got right to the chase. The anger the silver orbs hold hopefully tips the older man off.

"Grave is nearby. Come on." He turns to walk.

Merlino says he'll handle it. Ashley wasn't so sure. "No such thing as a milk run, Merlino." What that meant? Especially in their world, things rarely went according to plan. Ash knew better. His order to block the exits had Ash simply nod. In fact, he let one more Pokemon, unseen to Merlino or the store clerk, out inside his hoodie. Two white ears almost poking out from Sunny.

The bell jingles. The duo enter, and Ash immediately points Juliette towards the back. No backdoor escape. On the other hand, Ash leans against the entrance, his hoodie a little inflated. Silver eyes watch happiness die in the clerk. Anyone would be the same in his shoes. Ashley has to tell himself it's gonna be okay. When the swirling fog, he takes a moment to look towards him and his mind connects it right away.

"GAVIN, DOWN!"

BOOM. Gavin hits against a display of candy, and Ash hits a candy bar display. And just like Kit-Kats, he breaks them clean in half and lands into the chocolate blast zone on his side, protecting Sunny.

"You okay?" he whispers to Sunny, and the little Scorbunny mews out happily enough. Despite the bunny being okay, Juliette was not. Perhaps it was just terrible timing, but the moment the counter blew, she had little to cushion the boom. So she lays hurt, quite moans of pain.

"I'm good."

'But he won't be in a minute'

It's been maybe a week since his duel with Theo. In that short amount of time, Ash dyed his hair back to black. And aside from ruining his life and morals by returning to Rocket, he was okay. Better than okay tonight.

Why?

It may not have been a date, per se, but Ashley decided to text Kep. After their first meeting, Ash had been charmed. He gave it some time to set, some couple of days. No need to text right after. Wasn't how he worked. But three days later, his text read simply:

You know, they're giving out candy in the lower district near my place. Wanna go get some? Just the two of us?

Who was he kidding, he absolutely just asked Kep out on a date. Ash wasn't fooling anyone. But as he sat with what looked like a sack on his back, meant to carry a good amount of loot. Ashley wasn't a big candy person, but he enjoyed sour candy. Skittles? He could rip through them in an afternoon.

He leans quietly against a streetlight. He checks his breath; it's clean. He looks at a small mirror on him, pushes his hair out of the way. His costume? A little basic, but the cowboy hat should tip Kep off on his very thrift-shoppy costume. Taking a deep breath in, he dispelled any nervousness he had.

He couldn't stop smiling.

Guilt stares back in the mirror. It twists and turns, this malignant thing, it is something, it is always at the corner of the eye. Right out of vision on a dark night, walking to get a snack and realizing it isn't visible to the eye, but it's there. It's the invisible, karmic cause-and-effect of the world. Guilt follows. It always had. It always followed closely behind.

Jubilee would be okay. She's in a better place now. The others were phantoms.

The switchblade was in his pocket, and he nods. "After Jayden's little stunt, I always carry." Cheerful as the storefront was, the bell chimes. The traitor's Oompa Loompa song plays, and the doopity do did the knife come for him too.

As Juliette follows behind, Ash pulls the blade into his jacket sleeve. He awaits for Gavin to enter first. Ash is doing his best to keep his stoicism at the forefront and never let it show that it bothers him. Juliette keeps quiet, red eyes still on the blonde, as the two enter the candy shop.

Just once today, Ash would like to not be attacked maliciously by a dungeon. Unfortunately for them, that was not today. Hell, if Ash could get through the next five minutes without being attacked brutally, chomped by a Zubat, attacked by Claydol, or oh yeah, the best one, being literally smashed by closing walls in a deathtrap maze. To put it simply... Ash was staying calm.

Relatively so, actually. Ash's danger sense was already sprung the moment the circlet was grabbed. He even assumed it was going to kill them. So as Kiara rounds each corner, going through the maze, Ash returns Bullet and Bongo both to keep them safe. A cruel fate for the Grookey and the Starly, but if he dies, they don't. It would be self-fulfilling.

But each swerve nearly threw Ash off. By time they made it to the door, and out of the trap, Ash was holding the fur on the back of Kiara for dear life. His face was blue, as he falls onto the floor.

"... we're getting milkshakes. After this, I need like five. The amount of stress..." He can't stand at the moment.

Instead, as his shaky legs and arms move about, they just look back towards the trap, and finally to the key. A smile curves his lips. "Well. At least we're getting something for the pain and strife we're going through today." It was a bigger key, to the point that it would likely open more locks. A skeleton key? No, probably just one meant for the big kit and caboodle.

"Alrgiht..." He gets up after a minute, and snatches the key. "Where to now... hm..."

A simple question. Five words. An answer. An answer that doesn't come easy, but silver and gold stand opposed to one another. Doubt cannot be seen within his quiet stoicism. Instead, he throws his cigarette to the ground, and steps on the bud.

"When you spill blood once, it's easier the second time. Kept telling myself that. I'm past the nightmares now. All that's left is the guilt. I see them in the mirror every time I look at myself, staring behind me. I've tried once or twice. Hasn't killed me yet, Merlino. Doesn't make me strong, just means I'm not dead yet by my own hand."

That was the first time he ever admitted that.

He releases his dog, a shiny Furfrou, with a white coat and black fur on her head and chest. The pampered star-styled poodle follows behind Ashley as he walks towards the candy shop. The Furfrou turns a scarlet eye towards Gavin, a brow raised. Her pampered and styled mane quietly shifts as they near the establishment.

"Ain't no rest for the wicked. We can talk philosophy over a drink."

Huh. Merlino really... that was kinda weird. They had a lot in common. That is not how Ash perceived today to go. In all honesty, the trend would have either been Ash biting angrily and lashing out, or getting bitten by a rabid Houndoom of a person. This was neither. A mutual understanding for just a moment.

Then it comes crashing down the moment the mission comes up, and well. He didn't like it. "Ironic." Ash years ago would have had Theo as a mentor, failed the mission, and it would cost him, but Ash takes another drag, getting up from his chair.

"Let's get this over with."

Defeat didn't feel good, but Ash tries not to care. Right now, he needed to climb the ranks. Merlino was a good teacher in that regard. Even if Ash hated himself and Rocket, he needed his name to be bigger and to carry weight. He'll climb.

Even over corpses. "Gonna make me do the dirty work? I am a former traitor after all." His silver eyes display a quiet, serious stoicism he never had before.

As Bongo and Conga begin stuffing Ashley's mouth as he's laughing, the sounds of choking almost were heard, as he quickly chews, and eyes both monkeys, who are just trying to help. He was still laughing, as he chews and swallows, before throwing himself back onto the floor. The bellowing laughter ends, as he grins towards the ceiling.

"Five bucks on Zera. Or our big zappy bird overlord." Ash grabs at his face, before turning to Isaac. "But if you're feeling extra petty, Palkia might have slid your foot under the Stunfisk, and put me on a direct course for the Klang." Wouldn't be the first time. He sees a Voltorb rolling nearby, and pats both Conga and Bongo's heads.

He takes a breath.

"Just shit luck, I guess... wanna get out of here? Don't think we're gonna find anything."

There's a slight chuckle from Ash's parted lips, a small smile. Merlino wasn't happy to see an old friend? Like every other Rocket he knew before, this was the typical response. But Gavin's claim of Rocket having changed has Ash's smile fade fast.

"That's the problem, Merlino. I know that." Ash's silver gaze is fastened towards Trick or Sweet. But he decides to hold off for now, moving to grab one of the cigarettes, and the lighter. He wordlessly uses the nicotine rush to get over that anger in him. Bullshit philosophy can come later.

"Terrible habit. Been trying to quit for years."

He gestures towards the candy shop, taking a drag, he looks across the table with a quizzical expression. "What's the deets?" Time to get to business. Unlike the last time he was in Rocket, he's a lot more compliant. Who knows. Maybe he would even be surprised Ash was a lot more work-oriented, being that he wasn't exactly the model of a great Rocket grunt in the Kanto era.

Even his voice got deeper. But it's the same shit. Jayden nearly killed him, so of course Gavin would have. Ashley closes his eyes for a moment, processing that. A five second pause, and response. "A howdy ho to you too, Merlino. Glad I missed the welcome hearse."

Years ago, Ashley was a tortured soul in Rocket. A kid who wanted to make a name for himself from the streets, not realizing how hard the fall from grace Rocket was. Ashley was never a particularly good Grunt. Couldn't kill without attachment, and when he did it messed him up good.

Gavin might notice Ashley's sheepish smile, not even remotely threatened by Gavin's statement, to the point where he's just used to being threatened. To his question, however, his smile fades.

"After seeing Theo again, years of therapy got undone in an instant. I guess... I came to an ultimatum. My dreams weren't coming true, Rocket followed me to Hoenn, and I realized I couldn't run anymore. So either I beat Theo and turned myself in with him. Or I lose, and come back." It was a stupid move, he wasn't thinking when he made it, but he realizes now that it had to happen eventually. "Rocket is poison. I-"

He turns his silver eyes to Gavin. He says it straight. "I want to change it. There's your answer. Happy?"

The room must be woozy for a couple minutes until Ash gets his bearings. But suddenly, some blonde witch gives him the look. Years of Kanto Rocket taught him that look well. Someone was looking down on him.

Big mistake.

"Oh? How original. Sexy witch. What, the nurse outfit was out? Or maybe cheerleader fits the blonde bimbo aesthetic more?" He scoffs, but oddly enough, finds that cruelty oddly charming. Which, perplexes Ashley, because in his mind this should have been an immediate red flag. Goes to show, Rocket really was a poison.

He moves over. If nothing else, he has no fear. Liquid courage was a hell of a drug, and as he leans to the side and puts away the empty bottle, he crosses his left leg over the other, a smirk under his fake moustache, holding his ground. "I ain't gonna stop you. Could use the company. Rest of 'em are boring fucks, or too drunk." He hiccups. Hypocrite. Whether he realizes he just complimented her, he decides to leave to her.

Cheap costumes aren't easy to come by. The bargain bin and thrift shops kinda sucked this year. Toilet paper mummies, a vampire with a butler tailcoat. Oh, and the best one by far. The pimp with a leopard print speedo. Who goes as a pimp for Halloween? That's just stupid. Ash decided to not thrift this year, and so he sits here in a costume. Even dyed his hair black to fit the part. Fake moustache, check. Oversized white-gloves, super check. Green shirt and hat with the trademark L? Mega check. He was ready. Time to party. And so he does.

Jump jump, and the house is actually jumpin'. Ash is enjoying the music, the hustle, the bustle, and while he does take the time to bounce on his feet on the dancefloor, it feels awfully hollow. Maybe there's a special someone on his mind. Meteor was coming, fuck the world. Can't even get back at Rocket. Doesn't have the time to change it. But maybe, it was that threat that had him dancing harder than he ever had before. If the world was going to end, let it end. He'd still bounce around like an idiot for hours and hours on end.

Oh well.

He finds himself splayed out on one of a group of bean bag chairs, empty. A beer in hand. His silver eyes looking to the ceiling. The sound of the dancefloor was loud, and he needed minutes, maybe hours away from that. He didn't have the battery to keep going. Shit, how many drinks did he have? "Room is spinning. Shit..."
