Oh how he wishes he could light the cigar in his hand up, breathe deep of things that could kill him. It was one of the first tricks he tried, when he first gained this newfound power to evade Morpheus. Nothing placed in his body sticks. The warrior can still fight, he can even bleed, but food, drink, and tobacco have no flavor.[break][break]
Paxton’s words hint at truths he does not know how to voice. People lose themselves in their legends. Any fool with a library card can read tragedies of the past and see how that turned out for them.[break][break]
But, strangely enough, Navy thinks he likes the warrior better than he likes Michael. People wear names like they do clothes. They are not as permanent as one might think, not a tattoo written in ink. He’s seen Michael’s world, almost been drowned in the blood of his truth. The ideal of Navy, The Warrior, who fights so others don’t have to, is an ideal worth holding up.[break][break]
But it still has to be him. Navy has to be that person with or without Zacian…[break][break]
…he was that person, before Zacian. It turns into a question of whether he will allow the power of a demigod to corrupt him, all the while they unknowingly careen towards oblivion predicted in cyberspace prophecies.[break][break]
At least Paxton can make him laugh, pulls the gloom off Navy’s face. The first question they’re asked makes him split a grin. He thinks of all the arguments he has had with freya morningstar, FERNANDO SILPH, PENELOPE LIVY, and countless others. Arguments with strong-willed Cillian Quinn, spoken with steel instead of words.[break][break]
“Strongly disagree.” He chuckles. “And believe you me, when I piss Livy off enough that she tells you to dome me, I know it’s nothin’ personal on your end.” Paxton’s a crackerjack with a sniper rifle, and though Navy laughs, he wonders if a well-placed anti-tank round really could take the heads off Rocket’s avatars.[break][break]

His eyes go sharper, nodding back to the far wall of the cell. They’re directions, given with the precision of one who knows what he’d do, were he in her shoes. A life spent with one foot outside the law teaches a man certain tricks.[break][break]
“If you try anything while I’m passing you this, I’m breaking your hand.” And it is no empty threat. Most Rockets are human beings, and therefore deserve the compassion of one who can change. With every word, his prisoner tells him she will not rehabilitate herself. It is assurance he can fight her without some strange moral hangup, like he has with so many other Rockets.[break][break]
Scooting down, he slides the food to the other side of the bar and steps away, back to where he sits. Returning to his chair, he sits down, opens his own box of food, and eats. Hana’s shadow bubbles with a promise of what will happen, should she misbehave.[break][break]

NOTES/COMMENTS: While Kyogre approaches, Navy joins the League offensive. He quickly engages with the Quinns, who he engaged long ago in a helpless battle under Granite Cave. I would like to use this battle to showcase how far Navy has come since then, while also putting the strength of the Quinns front and center. Navy holds them off so the rest of the League doesn't have to deal with them, but it really is holding off since neither side can gain a decisive advantage.[break]
Furthermore, I would like the battle to be interrupted at some point by Kyogre/other frenzied Pokemon upset by the fighting attacking a boat filled with last minute evacuees. They could put aside their differences to ensure the boat gets through before going right back to fighting. It would show that all three, for different reasons, care about Sootopolis's people.

Once I get close to ‘em, I’ll be able to feel any metal on their bodies.” What he speaks of his not one of his avatar powers, not quite. It’s a quirk of his magnetism, a capacity to sense the metal around him so that he can manipulate it further. Having spent a year fighting men who sup on the power of gods, he finds it strange to use similar powers.[break][break]
“We shouldn’t be mining this stuff, especially not now. I’d say the government’s stupid but that’s like saying a fish breathes water.” It’s harsher than it needs to be, especially as Hoenn’s first knight, but true loyalty involves criticism rather than a blind march forward. Cracking his knuckles, he looks down into the darkness.[break][break]

It is only now that his great land shark chooses to rise from the sand. Vortigern stands out of place, out of time. The black dragon towers over all, an apex specimen of his species. Josh Devlin likes to throw around the phrase alpha Pokemon. Navy doesn’t know about any of that. What he does know is that his Garchomp is big, and quicker than anything his size has any right to be.[break][break]
Navy’s eyes dilate, his breath sharpening. Around his neck hangs a necklace where his sync stone sits. It fully synergizes, just as a drizzle comes down from on high. The Pelipper are here, and with them another attack. Navy’s calm heart prevails over the black dragon’s rage. Some part of him hungers to taste the flesh of the newborns, as kill or be killed is the law of dragonkind.[break][break]
That, too, he fights down.[break][break]
The first of the Pelipper begins its dive, and Vortigern rises to meet him. A claw catches the bird. Jet engines on the dragon’s hand ignite as he spins in place, so fast as to seem a drill. The Pelipper is thrown clear across the water, out so far that the naked eye can no longer perceive the bird. Vortigern lands in the sand, making a deep impression, and roars up at the diving swarm.[break][break]
All the while, the hatchlings continue their breakneck race for the water. More and more, helped along by the unseen Greninja, begin their first swim. It seems more a matter of pride for the Wingull and their evolved kin at this point.[break][break]
“I’m gonna set down a field that’ll make electric attacks stronger. Between that n’ the rain they were kind enough to kick up for us, I think we can put a bow in this pretty soon.”[break][break]
So he says, but the Pelipper all start beating their wings in unison. Together, they work to kick up a hurricane, something to hatchlings out of the water and up into the air. They mean to work for their supper.[break][break]
“Hurry! Hurry!” He implores Airi and her Pokemon, a surge of static electricity spreading all around them. His type field takes, and he prays for her success.

“Think they’ll start getting the memo ‘bout that.” Navy smiles, despite everything. “You did great, back in the battle. Helpin’ Baki, Isaac, and Calliope like that? Not just anyone could pull that off.” One was the town’s gym leader, another Suicune’s chosen, and the third Kanto’s champion before Rocket invaded. All three are exceptional trainers, but it is Eddie that has earned a certain creature’s eyes.[break][break]
Shuwen is quick to return, seemingly alone. Only as he draws closer does the sound of smaller footsteps trailing behind him become audible. Urshifu are not born as they are. They are forged from countless hours of training when they are young.[break][break]
One such youngling, a Kubfu, peers out at Eddie from behind the Urshifu. The little bear studies the trainer, regarding him and his resolve.[break][break]
“Turns out Shuwen has a kid.” A finger points to the Kubfu, who looks to Navy before returning his attention to Eddie. “He’s been looking for someone to trust ‘em to for a bit now. The tyke was training up in the mountains when Regice rolled up.” Questions abound in Navy’s mind, ones he always asks himself when he sees Shuwen’s child. Where did they come from? Is there a Mrs. Shuwen? For a bear with very loud footsteps, Shuwen is a master at slipping away unseen and keeps to his own schedule.[break][break]
“They say kids are the future, and they’ll grow up to be this island’s armor. I can usually speak for Shuwen, so, I’ll do so right now: you mind looking after his kid? Every Pokemon needs a partner.”

Ascalon, and all these other weapons, and powers he does not even yet fully understand feel like they have always been a part of him. That, too, he imagines is part of avatarship’s intoxication. It invites you into a new notion of completeness, offering you a taste of Ambrosia and a lifelong companion.[break][break]
The question offers him keen insight into Thomas Benoit, illeana reyes, and all the others who spoke of the powers they once had. They frightened him, back before Galar, before he had any idea what was at stake. Now, he frightens him all by himself. Maybe someone else could have posed the question with more elegance, but John Sullivan nominated him, and so he speaks. Besides, after a few near death experiences, looks of disappointment and condescending words don’t frighten him.[break][break]

There will be a reckoning for this, one day. People far away, sleeping or plotting their war, will question how this could come to be. How could a ship sneak into distant Dewford? How could the sheriff fail?[break][break]
The answer is simple: he placed faith in the wrong basket. One day, his code demands Howard will answer for what he’s done. That’s the pact they made in another world, adrift in a secret garden. He will fight all of them, should the order be given.[break][break]
Not today, not tonight. People are depending on him. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki calls out to him, and gives everything she has to hold the line for a little longer. Farther out, across the town, blasts of magenta dynergy signal more Nihilego and Naganadel are growing in response to Regice, their mother, and the Skeleton Gigantic. People huddled in bunkers deep beneath the earth wait, wondering if the dawn will bring salvation or damnation.[break][break]
Zacian does her part, and so must he.[break][break]
He feels something in him that wasn’t there before. It is his duty, his privilege, to wield this power. Ahead he sees the end of the long road, which will end with his body shattered. Most of the old heroes were not afforded the luxury of dying in bed.[break][break]

With the exhale, weapons seem to materialize from nowhere at all. They land before Calliope Marks , who fights on alongside Beedrill in this impossible situation. They land before Shred , who witnesses the birth of a revenant. They land before Eduardo Hisakawa , Isaac Merlo , and all the rest.[break][break]
“I’m with you, Eddie.” He feels exhausted. Only battle binds him to the waking world. Rest will come when his duty is done. “And we’ve got a giant to beat.”[break][break]
With Ascalon in hand, his weapons flying all around him, up at the behemoth along with fell stingers and a revenant’s raging fist, he charges. A bloody scream leaves his throat, echoed by Zacian’s howl. The hero of many battles sounds the attack, empowering the many warriors on the field to march on, and finish this fight.

Zacian looks at her king as he descends to meet them. She closes her eyes, a rare bout of melancholy overcoming the great hero. Her thoughts are her own, but she soon opens her eyes and bows her head low. A four-legged creature cannot kneel, so the dip of her head suffices. A slight glance to Navy reminds him of proper etiquette.[break][break]
The Rider takes to a knee. Though Calyrex is not his liege, a title he reserves for dahlia goode, the High King is afforded the respect due one of his station. There Navy stays, on his knee, looking up at the king until told otherwise. That he has learned the truth of his final tale is not surprising, though it embarrasses him all the same. Elise gives him an answer, one Navy feels the need to clarify.[break][break]
“She used your shard bravely when we were all kidnapped by, Galar slips into his words like an old habit, “those blackhearted rogues called the Loyal Three. His healing saved many lives.”[break][break]
I will not be merciful in giving you your final sweet release of death.[break][break]
Yet still, those words, spoken by Elise when presented with their vanquished foes, linger in his mind. She was not alone in the sentiment, but all the same, the knowledge of that that placed turned his fellows into haunts him. Discomfort plays across his face, but it is downplayed by an old trick from another life: omission.[break][break]
“She plans to become Rustboro’s ranger captain. We were just discussing how best to shore up the city’s defenses.”[break][break]
A curt cough from Zacian reminds him of his reason for coming here.[break][break]
“As for Zacian and myself, she wished to pay her respects to her king. We’ve made each other a promise.” Zacian’s eyes sharpen. “Uh, sworn an oath to protect Hoenn and Galar together. That story’s very long, but I’d be happy to share it with you over some mead.”[break][break]
A pause, and he adds something else he cannot resist voicing.[break][break]
“Thank you for calling Valkyrie by my name, and for letting me ride her. I saw her again when Zacian and I made our oath. I miss her a lot, and I know she misses you too.”

The mention of heroism flushes his cheeks at the corners, just where the beard ends and smooth skin begins. Navy does not think himself a hero. A hero would have been there at Slateport, one of the battlefronts of the Three Days War, or even Sootopolis, where Gabe and so many others lost there lives.[break][break]
A hero would not sit idle, not when this war held the very universe as its stakes. All the same, Noah’s kindness, even in this dark hour where he is the man mourning a lost husband, is not lost on Navy. The tissues are taken, and he makes himself presentable. There’ll be press conferences, meetings, rapid calls, and most of all, an urgent need for action.[break][break]
“Promise you, man. I’m not gonna die on ya.” Though he knew Kyle before Noah, he still considers the man a friend. It’s hard not to, when someone exudes as much natural warmth as the fighting gym leader. “But you gotta promise the same. Arceus knows we’re going to need you, too.”[break][break]
A pause as he stands, looking out the window at a region that continues to exist, against all odds, in large part due to Noah’s husband.[break][break]
“So let’s have a real bad day. Drink some more. Then, we wake up tomorrow and make sure we don’t give Kyle and Gabe room to say something cheeky and all-knowing, next time we see ‘em.”
