Her explanation still didn’t make sense to him. Had she been living under a rock for years or something? He bit back the instinctive urge to ask that, knowing it would be rude, and instead just nodded. Though he didn't believe her, it would be unclear to her that he was skeptical. His expression was completely blank, giving nothing away.

Following after the Pokémon, he stayed alert. Though he knew something lay ahead of them, it wouldn’t do to let their guard down. For all he knew, something could be lying in wait for them and leap out to attack them. Mentally shaking himself to clear away such thoughts, he wondered why his mind always jumped to the worst possible outcomes. Having those kinds of thoughts when they were trying to track something didn’t do anyone any good.

Soon, they were close enough for him to make out the silhouette of a Pokémon. Just from the silhouette, he knew what it was even before they had gotten close enough to see what it looked like. A midnight Lycanroc. He couldn’t say he was too surprised. He had read that they were the enemy of Wooloo somewhere, since the canine Pokémon tended to hunt them.

As his partner started to direct her Pokémon, he eyed her thoughtfully. "Be careful. Midnight Lycanroc are rock-type Pokémon, so it may know a ground-type move. Speaking of their weaknesses, they are fighting, ground, steel, water, and grass. So it’s in your best interest to use moves with that kind of typing," he warned her, his tone having a note of caution when he told her the first part.

With that out of the way, he directed Corviknight to use Steel Wing against the Lycanroc. He didn’t really like attacking a Pokémon, but if it meant protecting another Pokémon, he would deal with it. Hopefully, it wouldn’t take too much to drive it away.[break] Yuina Higashi

Quickly coming across footprints, he located the ones that belonged to Dragonite before following them. However, the footprints ended, and upon looking up, he noticed that some branches from trees had broken off, signifying that the dragon Pokémon had taken flight. So, the dual-type was being smart about things and wasn’t just sticking to the ground.

Making sure the sun was still where it had been when he last checked, he returned to the task at hand and resumed tracking the Dragonite. He had been following the trail for a few minutes when he heard a roar. Picking up some dirt from the ground, he let the wind catch it to see from which direction the wind was blowing, double-checking his earlier evaluation before counting the seconds under his breath for how long the roar lasted.

The roar had sounded like it came from all around him, so checking the direction of the wind to see if it could carry sound and seeing how long it took until the roar faded was the easiest way to pinpoint where the roar had come from. Once he was sure where the roar had come from, he could continue on. Of course, it meant veering a bit off the path he had been taking, but it wasn’t by much, so he wasn’t worried about not being able to find his way back out of the forest.

The first sound he heard was the sound of flapping, causing him to instinctively look up. There he saw the Dragonite hovering in the air. Knowing he had to play the role of this just being a wild Pokémon, he immediately fell into the role. “Let’s take things easy,” he said, his expression and voice softening. For those who had met him, it would be surprising that he could talk in such a soft tone.

The first thing to know about approaching a wild Pokémon was not to come off as threatening in any way. And that includes tone of voice. It was why his tone had gone from its normal impassive one to a soothing one. Though the fact he had a soft spot for Pokémon helped. Not that he would ever admit to such.

Of course, voice wasn’t the only thing to pay attention to when not coming off as non-threatening. It had a lot to do with body language as well. Which was why he had relaxed his muscles and moved slowly as to not come off as non-threatening. In a normal situation, moving too quickly would make one come off as a threat.

Of course, since the Dragonite was playing a role, he would decide whether or not that worked. If not, he would go on to the next way of calming a wild Pokémon down: offering it some food. Food was another good way to calm a wild Pokémon down.[break] Oliver Shrakes

As the older man spoke, he nodded. Meeting a Pokémon he had never seen before was definitely something to look forward to. He hadn't even seen a picture of one. Then again, he had never seen a Raikou either. Perhaps when he was introduced, Josh would explain the similarities between the two. Though he was sure he would have to ask.

He was ready for the older man to start telling him about the invasion when the arrival of wild Pokémon interrupted them. The Snover had just been captured in a Pokéball when he heard the command from the elite ranger. Without question, he did as the older man asked. He had learned long ago not to ask questions when told to do something.

The pinkette was unsure what he would do. But releasing a Charizard and having it use flamethrower wasn't something he was expecting. And his grandparents told him he was reckless. He was sure what the older male did would cause them to shake their heads and mumble something about young people being reckless. It was something they often did with him.

Coming out of hiding, he eyed the new pokeballs with their newly acquired Pokémon before turning to Josh with a raised brow. If he wasn't so curious about the invasion story, he would definitely ask him about his methods. But for now, he put it to the back of his mind, deciding he would get to it later.

"So, about the invasion, you were just about to explain it to me," he pointed out as he walked over to pick up the Pokéball for his newly acquired Pokémon. As he awaited the older male's response, he kept a lookout for any more wild Pokémon that might show up. After all, it wouldn't do to let their guard down.[break] Josh Devlin

Meeting his Zeraora did sound nice, and he wasn't saying that just because the Electric-type was a mythical Pokémon. He loved all Pokémon, so meeting them was definitely something he could get behind. Not that he would ever say as much. He didn't like people knowing he had a soft spot for Pokémon or that he had a soft side at all.

"I would appreciate that," was his simple response before the subject moved on. The offer to tell him about the Johto and Kanto invasion was a good one. He felt it was something he should be aware of as a ranger. After all, there might be times he would have to deal with Team Rocket face to face. With the kind of world they lived in, no one was safe from the tyranny of Team Rocket. So the more information he had on the matter, the better.

Before he could agree or disagree, a Gliscor showed up, and he made quick work of catching it before turning his attention back to Josh. "I feel like it's something I should know going forward. I'm a strong believer that knowledge is power," he said, feeling like that would be answer enough for the gym leader.

While he waited for him to say something, he retrieved the Pokéball with his newly acquired Pokémon. His attention was so focused on Josh that at first, he didn't notice the appearance of a Snover or a Beartic. It wasn't until he saw Rook move from his peripheral vision that he realized they were no longer alone.

He turned to see Rook engage the Snover with the move Pluck, and before the dual-type could retaliate, he threw a Pokéball at the Snover.[break] Josh Devlin

He hadn't been waiting for long when the older male showed up. The fact that the older male would take joy in working with him again was definitely a surprise. When one was used to believing they would only screw things up, it was hard to get out of that mindset. It was hard to make himself believe that he wouldn't always make a terrible first impression.

Luckily, his expression gave nothing of his thoughts away as he inclined his head to Elliot in greeting. "It's always nice to work with someone I already know," he simply agreed. Now that he said it like that, he was sure that was why Elliot was glad to work with him. Because he couldn't have actually made an impression on the older male.

"As for the ghost hunting thing, I guess I never put too much stock in dealing with ghost Pokémon haunting," he admitted with a shrug. "Guess we should get started. From what I've been told, a certain room in this apartment complex is haunted. Some of the other residents have heard strange noises coming from the room, and there have been enough complaints that we were given the task of dealing with the problem," he explained, going over the assignment one more time so they would have an idea of what they were dealing with.

"The other residents near the room that the ghost Pokémon is said to be in have been told to stay away for a few hours, so we'll have that whole floor to ourselves. So we won't have to worry too much about disturbing the other residents," he explained, since he wasn't sure if he would have been told that part. Well, that didn't tell him much. That was a pretty vague response, but he figured that wasn't all he had to say. He didn't say anything and just waited for him to respond. What he did was give a bit of history on the Pokémon they were dealing with, which made sense since they didn't have that much time. It was just best to deal with this as soon as possible.

The fact that it was smart is something he could have guessed himself. The fact that it would pretend to be a trainer was a dead giveaway of that. Then again, a lot of psychic Pokémon were known for being smart. It probably had something to do with the psychic powers they possessed. That was the only thing he could think of.

"No, I haven't. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of battling. I don't like to see Pokémon get hurt. I'm skilled enough at battling though," he said with a small shrug. Sure, he didn't care for battling, but he wasn't as opposed to it as some people. If he had to battle to protect someone, he would, even if he wouldn't like it.

They came across the Pokémon in question, and he didn't waste any time in releasing his Corviknight from his Pokéball. Now all they had to do was wait to see what Pokémon the Oranguru sent out.[break] Orion Lykos

The way she spoke was a bit confusing. It was as if she didn't know what Kanto Growlithe was. How that could be, he didn't know. Kanto Growlithe was, after all, more well-known than its regional variant. Even he knew about the different types of Pokémon despite not having gotten out much when he was younger. Or at least, he hadn't ever ventured into the wilds. That was something that hadn't happened until he came to Hoenn.

It was just luck that he had found Rook. He was sure the Corviknight had just gotten separated from his flock when he was still a Rookidee. That was the only thing he could think of. After all, he had found him injured near his house and had tended to his injuries in secret. He and Rook had been inseparable since then. It was rare to see one without the other.

"Yeah, Kanto Growlithe. Cano is a regional variant?" he said slowly, not bothering to hide the fact that he was perplexed. "Growlithe from the Kanto region is pretty well-known. It's surprising you wouldn't know about it," he said, glancing at her briefly before looking away. The fact that someone wouldn't know about Kanto Growlithe was still hard to wrap his mind around.

Remembering the rest of her comment, he mentally shook himself. "It was just common sense," he said, brushing off her compliment. Not that he wasn't thankful, because he was. Compliments just made him uncomfortable. Even after three years, he still wasn't used to receiving compliments.

There it was again. A feeling that he was missing something. And, like before, it was because of what she had said. "Were you really young when you got him? I found Rook when I was ten, but I know people who got Pokémon at a pretty young age. I don't think I would have been able to hide Rook if I got him at a really young age," he said absentmindedly.

When Rook spotted something, he momentarily forgot about the conversation they were having. "Stay alert. We could be dealing with a person or a Pokémon," he reminded the woman as he set off after the two Pokémon.[break] Yuina Higashi

Ever didn’t mind silence. In fact he usually thrived in silence. Talking had never been something he enjoyed. Most of the time it was because he couldn’t find something to say. And even he knew that he could sometimes be a jerk. But the silence between him and the other guy was suffocating. It put him on edge, not that a part of him wasn’t always on edge. But it put on him more on edge than he usually was.

He just gave a curt nod. There really wasn’t anything more to say. He had already thanked the older male. Hearing the cost he counted out the required amount of pokedollars before handing it over. Some part of him had been expecting it to cost more so he had brought more than what the flowers cost. He supposed he has enough that he could go get something to eat at one of the restaurants in Mauville.

The Lilligant approaching pulled him out of his thoughts of getting a bite to eat. His expression softened at the flower Pokémon’s gift. Vic’s voice brought him back to his senses and his expression turned neutral once more. ”That’s good,” he said his tone steady but the fact he was looking at the counter like it had become the most interesting thing made his embarrassment clear.[break]

Bird Pokémon. He had always had a bit of a fascination with them. Of course he loved all Pokémon equally, but he just couldn’t help a certain curiosity when it came to bird Pokémon. Probably because the first Pokémon he had ever had was a Rookidee. And while he didn’t love his Zebstrika any less he would always have a closer bond to the steel bird. Probably because he had been with him through so many hardships.

Reaching the designated destination he was a bit surprised to not be the first to arrive. He was known for being the early type. Usually beating the other ranger to the destination. Mostly because he just wanted to get out of his house. Not that he had anything against his home in Fortree. He just didn’t like to be cooped up inside. That and considering he didn’t sleep and functioned by drinking coffee nonstop made it so he had nothing better to do.

Once he was close enough to his partner he hopped off of Rook not even waiting for the Corviknight to fully descend. Not that he had been overly high up. He had waited until the steel bird was about a foot above the ground before jumping off. But it would probably still be enough to make certain people frown. Like his grandparents.

”Robin I presume,” he said inclining his head to the younger ranger. Though neither was full fledged rangers they had still been placed together. He figured that they thought he had enough training not to mess this up. Either that or they didn’t have enough rangers to spare for this kind of mission.
