"...you're right." mika had been content with how things were for so long, but she knew that nothing truly lasted, so it was important to appreciate all that one had before it was suddenly taken away. but the way that lash's voice had been subdued just now resonated with mika. it seemed like there was something hidden there, but the ranger was the last person to pry. [break][break]

instead, she looked at the night, and how the moon waned and the happy voices of trick-and-treaters all around them started to dissipate. it was getting late, and she glanced back down at her pokemon. looks like her mienfoo had been the loser of this bout, and toxicroak had to stop the fight a final time, departure arriving for the ranger and her team. "i agree with you on that. everyone in hoenn, everyone all over the world, we're all pretty similar in normality, aren't we?" there were always some crazy times, too, but what was life without a little spice? at the comment about respect and experience, however, mika paused for a moment, then said, "i guess so. maybe next time we can have a battle for real, seems like i could still learn much from you." [break][break]

tonight, they'd have to cut the fun short, instead. "well, lash, i think i should rein in my team for tonight. thank you for the chat, and your experience. have a good rest of the night, okay?"

mika breathes in the fresh air of her community garden. today is a day for dragons: she's brought along some of her best dragon-type fighters, those who could benefit from some alone time with their trainer. roaring moon would certainly not be as agreeable if kommo-o hadn't been watching it closely, and surprisingly it's mika's haxorus who's the odd one out, much more refined and graceful than her other two companions. but they are all similar in their tasks today, which is nothing short of helping sunflora water the plants, and enjoy the fresh air without need for throwing themselves into the throes of battle. [break][break]

it's not until that mika's dragons begin to tense does she realize something is wrong. glancing over their shoulder, they spot the invader in the garden, the anomaly in their space. a wild combusken, stealing berries from the bushes in the furthest plot up ahead. this pokemon seems to be quite hungry, so much so it will resort to stealing from gardens. [break][break]

mika heaves a breath. this is a good chance to show some of her bloodthirstier dragons the merit of settling things peacefully. that is, fighting only to wear out the combusken, rather than dominate or kill it. she nods at kaguya the haxorus, and the ax-dragon lowers her head to heed the call. she moves towards the combusken, and a short exchange of a battle is all it takes to bring the fire-type pokemon to its knees. [break][break]

the ranger appears above it in this moment, ambivalent in the face of the wild pokemon's desperation. she gently extends her hand, and says, "if you come with us, we can make use of your strength and speed. leave your hunger and anger behind, and get stronger with us, instead. what do you say?" [break][break]

unsure as to whether or not the combusken actually understands her, mika recognizes a look of fear in its eyes, and the way it glances from dragon to dragon to dragon-type pokemon, finding no faults in the draconic machine that mika has surrounded themself with. but the wild combusken also finds no fault within the ranger, an edge of sincerity as she holds her hand out, simply waiting for combusken to take it. [break][break]

and a warm claw reaches out to only brush against mika's extended palm, seemingly in agreement. mika smiles, her eyes lighting up like a dull wildfire in the horizon, her hand reaching for a pokeball. "good. let's get started with this..." and they capture the combusken, who doesn't resist, only to bring it back out once again. "you can help us water the garden, instead. samsa, show our new friend what to do." [break][break]

the paradox pokemon huffs, but ultimately obeys its trainer, and together with the new acquisition, starts watering some of the dry berry trees in the garden, annoyance fading into concentration, the combusken encouraged to concentrate just as hard, itself. [break][break]

mika watches her pokemon slowly grow closer together, and nods once. [break][break]

peace, as it should be. [break][break]

there are dangers in this world, too. even if it's a dream or a game, mika doesn't make it too far without seeing multiple different hazards. wild pokemon, strange obstacles, harmful entities that would do all they can to get their claws on her. everything is wrapped in a pitiful shade of red, making it hard for her to identify the blue she so desperately needs: the blue that outlines what is important in a mundane world. [break][break]

then they look down and see kirai's pokeball, wrapped up in a perfect blue. "oh..." mika heaves a sigh, then nods. "well, i promised that i'd work things out between us. so come on out, kirai." [break][break]

in a flash of colorless light, the annihilape emerges, its earlier outburst seemingly forgotten as its body stands scarily upright, tendrils of hair and ghostly energy radiating in multiple directions, like a twisted star. [break][break]

(mika doesn't see it just then, her own appearance having been warped in the same way. hover over her faceless avatar and an image of the human woman is seen, except her typical navy-blue hair has a silvery sheen to it, her long strands flowing out and around her — a faint dark glow surrounding her entire body, haunted and venerable like a ghost bride, or a fallen fighter.) [break][break]

but kirai behaves, and that's what matters. yet something strange happens when he comes into her field of vision: three items appear before her, then place themselves in their inventory. the flightless bird receives the following items: x speed / pretty feather / air balloon. are these items meant for something else later on? she'll have to hold onto them for now, as they're clearly outlined in blue. and together with kirai, mika wanders this space for some time, searching for anything that could be helpful, rather than not. [break][break]

and just then, she spots them: blue outlines in the distance, in the shape of people. other players in the game, perhaps? other people who can make sense of this nonsensical world? [break][break]

as mika approaches the new silhouettes, much of the world's details are lost on her, and she doesn't notice a small pop-up window that appears at her feet (for their gaze remains steady and straight ahead of them) that reads: due to server overload, CPU versions of players will begin to spawn, instead. no, all she's focused on is approaching these new people, confident in her stride. [break][break]

"excuse me, are you two also players in the game?" [break][break]

she receives two responses at once: "if you can call this a game," and "yuppers!" [break][break]

a glance at the gallery page of the avatars before her reveal two distinct figures: SHIGURE URUHA & Momo Sakai , the former whose thunder-struck appearance and wiry tail almost blend effortlessly with their initial mannerism, observant and wary. it's much different from his companion, the latter, who is the color pink in excess, fairy-like wings and ears sticking out from her body, smiling wide like she's excited to be meeting someone new. their responses are immediate and clear, and mika pauses, taking it all in. [break][break]

something's not entirely right... but they're not sure what it is. oh, well. there's safety in numbers, and it's clear this duo have pokemon and powers of their own. perhaps they can help mika, and mika can help them in turn. "in any case, this place is fairly dangerous. perhaps we're all better off sticking together?" [break][break]

"okay! sounds good to me! it's nice to meet you, by the way! i'm momo! and this is my big brother, shigure!" [break][break]

"hmm... i dunno that the three of us are enough, though." [break][break]

"what do you mean?" mika asks. "enough for what?" [break][break]

"for that dungeon over there. it says it needs four people to go through." [break][break]

mika glances in the direction that shigure points her towards, and sees a sign warning against the danger inside, a staircase towards the heavens appearing like some sort of dungeon entrance in the middle of this forest. [break][break]

and in front of that dungeon, a fourth figure stands there waiting. mika slowly approaches, her heart hammering in her chest. but why? maybe because, as they get closer to the other, a wave of familiarity washes over them, and a glance at the other shows her everything she needs to know. beyond strange images and colors is a clear depiction of the one person in the world that knows mika the best. [break][break]

that loves mika the best. that mika loves back. yet when Julie Solette turns around, there are gems in her visage where her eyes would be, the shine beautiful but strange, the color so accurate to the real thing. mika remembers julie's features well, and so once she takes in the sight of such a dazzling gaze, their attention is drawn to the sharpness of the other's claws, of the way julie laughs into her fingers and the nails look like they might draw blood if she ever so much as laughed the wrong way. [break][break]

"mimi. you always know where to find me, huh?" [break][break]

and that's all it takes for mika to realize that this isn't the real julie. or if it is, it's one that answers too promptly, too perfectly, to be the real person that mika knows and loves. the real jules would never take delight in this warped appearance. but whoever this julie is, she's still a version of the one mika knows, and one worth protecting. "this dungeon needs four people," mika says slowly, still trying to understand the dream. "will you help us...jules? please?" [break][break]

this julie glances from mika to the duo behind her (are they fake, too?), and nods. "oh, you don't have to ask so nicely, you know. i'd go just about anywhere with you!" [break][break]

...

(and the rest of the dungeon encounter happens like this: mika, momo, shigure, and julie, scaling a transparent staircase towards the clouds, where soaring above them in an endless horizon of sunlight and space, a gigantic talonflame rises above, wings aflame and cry echoing across eternity. it's sora, and mika already knows exactly what this fight should be, and how they'd go about facing it. [break][break]

her answer comes in the form of silent resolve: her strong form stepping in front of the other three, her annihilape glowing dark against the bright fire, her neck craned towards the gargatuan phoenix in the sky. [break][break]

she'll fight for her freedom even if it burns.)[break][break]

awaken, old ones! / lokix swarm

pokemon swarms. mika had grown to appreciate their presence, despite the general trouble they caused. because this means they can put their ranger training to good use over something less dire — a tiny break between more urgent missions that let her feel like she had everything under control. [break][break]

when word let out that it had been a swarm of lokix, mika prepared a small team to handle the threats of the wild bug-dark pokemon. surely her shiny dusk-lycanroc, ninetales, and lucario could handle any lokix that came their way. the lattermost pokemon has many fighting techniques, as well, to quell the threats. moves and elegance that are similar to human fighting styles, such as tae kwon do or karate. [break][break]

regardless, mika makes sure that no lokix or nymble gets too out of hand. maybe she'll catch one of these pokemon at the end of it all, but even if not, she's happy to be of help to the general public. [break][break]

RESURFACED TREASURES: SECRET

mika seldom had time to respond to oracelies' words when they were interrupted: interdream mist closing in on them, a horde of paradox pokemon in the likeness of magneton creeping through to get to them. "oracelies—" they were cut off by beams of energy firing in their direction. the sea witch's lapras was struck, and cried out before falling unconscious in the waters, and in oracelies' poke ball thereafter. [break][break]

mika scrambled out of the water, herself, placing everything she'd taken out just now back into her bag for safekeeping. she heard another wave of energy heading in their direction, and her altaria was too slow! [break][break]

her talonflame, however, had the speed to take the hits, the firebird screeching before fainting upon injury. mika recalled the talonflame back to its ball, cursing under her breath. then she took to altaria's wings, the skybird crooning softly, as though distressed. be that as it may, it was healed by oracelies' lapras, and would use its newfound energy to see its trainer to safety. [break][break]

mika turned towards oracelies and nodded. "we'll meet again someday... be safe until then, okay?" the other was so eloquent in ways that mika could only dream of... she hoped her hurried greetings would suffice in this moment. "i'll make sure the league knows what happened here, as well. bye for now!" [break][break]

the two women both soared to the skies on their pokemon, eager to leave the mob of sandy shocks to their own devices. but as oracelies headed to the ocean, mika flew further inland, hoping that once she reached a city, she'd be able to relay everything to the league properly, and reflect on the goodwill and courage of one oracelies solar. [break][break]

the clouds the only witness to this scattered meeting. [break]

"that's good to hear. thank you for your hard work, ever." the day certainly got away from them. at the very least, they accomplished what they set out to do, and even got to help out a wild pokemon on top of it all. overall, it felt like a success, and mika once again felt gratitude towards the other for all he'd done. [break][break]

"i'm glad we were able to help out. you were pretty inspiring today — i'll have you to thank for not only some nice pictures, but for helping out that taillow back there." she'd want to be in his presence again, that much was certain. perhaps next time, when mika came to pick up the photos, they could spend even more time together. [break][break]

"maybe that'll be a venture for next time, then." they would mark their calendars, and count themselves lucky that kind people like ever still existed in the world. maybe they'd even get into some ranger escapades next time, as well! [break][break]

for now, mika was content with returning ever's belongings to him, and letting the day go as quickly as it came. [break][break]

when the rocket member has nothing left to say to mika, that's when the ranger knows she's a lost cause. even if mika's words had been wholehearted, it's clear that xenon is quite experienced and self-assured, and the raging battle is the only answer to an empty bluff. [break][break]

the hurricane and thunderbolt combination are too powerful to contend with. mika sees the onslaught of wind and energy coming towards her, but her hydreigon feels heavy beneath her — not enough speed or stamina to dodge this attack. she holds onto the dragon's body and reins, bracing for impact and grimacing hard against draconic scale. "san—" [break][break]

WHOOSH! the attack collides with the dragon, and both the pokemon and trainer are sent for a loop. mika resists the urge to scream, and opens her eyes slowly against the plummeting sensations. in the corner of her vision, she sees the gengar and talonflame, locked in each other's space, a wild thunderbolt from the gengar sending the talonflame backward, static electricity riveting through its wings. [break][break]

hydreigon struggles to maintain balance, a serious lack of altitude signaling it doesn't have much fight left in it. neither does talonflame, by the look of things, its body surging with electricity and ghostly energy, alike. fine, mika thinks to herself. nobody said it was easy. [break][break]

deciding not to order her hydreigon yet, mika focuses on her talonflame who is now in sight, and calls out to him with a shaky voice: "acrobatics!" at this point, there's no chance of mika winning this fight, but she calls out to talonflame to endure, until the very end. until xenon has them in her sights once more. [break][break]
