wow, so he was josh devlin, master of faster! she didn't know he was also an elite ranger, but seeing him ride in on a quadrupedal zeraora, together with another pokemon that momo's never really seen before, made it seem fitting. part of her was relieved that someone so capable was on the job, but the rest of her wouldn't be at peace until she saw her bulbasaur for herself. "oh, thank you so much, elite ranger devlin! i mean, josh!" he was kind enough to offer a firstname basis to someone like momo, and momo would do the same for herself. [break][break]

"my name is momo. and i'd love to tag along, if that's really okay." but looking at his speed and his riding pokemon, momo realized she didn't quite have any riding pokemon herself. velvet the ribombee was bigger than average, but ribombees aren't strong enough to carry human weight, anyway. maybe silver the grovyle could carry her, instead? or maybe she'd just have to catch up with josh, if such a thing was possible. "um, and i promise not to get in the way, or anything." but she'd gladly offer the battling capabilities of her pokemon, instead, if it got to that! [break][break]

still, she was a tad bit worried. how far away were the missing pokemon? and who'd do such a terrible thing to kidnap them, in the first place? everything was so stressful to think about, but the pink-haired girl did her best to keep a smile on her face, anyway. didn't want to worry josh anymore than she had to, after all! "it's very nice to meet you, asher and bones! you already know me, but my yamper here is named kokoro! say hi, kokoro!" the yamper barked happily in response, running in circles around asher's heels. it was so cute! [break][break]

almost as cute as the realization that asher thought momo was still a kid! part of her wanted to correct him, but she felt that he might not even believe her if she told him that she was five years older than him, let alone that she owned her own house thanks to money her parents gave her for her journey to hoenn. so, she just laughed, instead, and said, "yeah, something like that! i'm a pretty good candy-passer, if i do say so myself." [break][break]

at the mention of his costume, he seemed to soften up, and momo felt her own heart ache as a result. "aw, that's so nice of the older kids and your teacher to help you out with that! the mask came out really nice!" the rest of the costume was fine just as well! it wasn't a competition, after all, and everyone deserved to celebrate with candy and costumes tonight! but on that note, momo said, "i'm actually really good at sewing! if you want, since you've been so nice to me, i could give you a gift to take with you! you know, in case you ever wanted to make more costumes for yourself in the future!" "wait, you're shalin? wow, it's an honor to meet you!" she heard the other woman's name thrown around before, and only now understands it's because the party is all her invention to start with. from what momo has heard, the expeditionary is just that: a woman with a skill for riding pokemon, and venturing out into the great wilds of hoenn! how exciting, how wonderful! [break][break]

and how generous to allow other people to ride her beloved pokemon! at first, momo thought she'd been dreaming, but now she's sure that all these larger-than-normal pokemon are shalin's riders, bright and wondrous, fast and experienced. between the dazzling gleams and the shrill cries let out into the autumn night, momo feels her heartbeat rising — bright pink eyes widening with awe. "um, miss shalin, to be honest, i've never ridden anything except for a rapidash when i went to a relative's farm as a kid." and it was a totally normal rapidash, in both size and demeanor — nothing like the amazing pokemon seen at tonight's party. [break][break]

"oh em gee, your shinx and that cottonee looked like such good friends already!" momo can't help but smile at her new friend's new friend! it's always great to meet new people and pokemon and have them stay, too! even if it'll be hard to line alia's schedule with her own, momo is sure that once they do meet up, it will be just as fun as it is today! [break][break]

then she remembers alia's words from earlier, back when momo had gone after the clefable first thing. nodding to herself, she says, "oh, yeah, if you want we can exchange numbers right now!" as if on cue, momo's rotomphone (in a bright pink phone case, of course!) comes flying out of her bag, buzzing with excitement at the chance to add a new contact to its list. [break][break]

but momo hardly has time to worry about contacts when alia's kindness continues, her praising momo's cuteness even if she hadn't seen her in action yet! the coordinator's eyes go wide and bright. "really? you think so? thanks so much!" she might be lucky in catching pokemon, but it takes a bit more than just luck to win a contest. still, the thought that momo could win one day, and be featured on tv where even alia can see her? it makes her heart practically beat out of her chest, body flooded with warmth and pride. [break][break]

out of the corner of her eye, a purple blur moves, and momo turns to look. "aw, a delcatty! i used to love skitty as a kid, i've gotta bring her home just for that!" momo attempts a peaceful approach, and leaves a vacant poke ball in the empty field where hopefully the delcatty will wander into. better yet, she'll leave a purple ribbon next to the poke ball, as though to promise she'll dress up delcatty all the time if the prim pokemon would agree to be her friend! [break][break]

"if i win, i'll send you a little thank-you gift for believing in me!" momo promises this wholeheartedly, her eyes shining like morning roses, her little hands reaching out to clasp alia's. "oh, sorry! i should have asked first, hehe." she lets go just as easily, not wanting to be too invasive with the other's space. all this excitement gets ahead of momo, sometimes, but she always wants her friends to feel comfortable around her, too. "you know, that's—no way!" [break][break]

momo cuts herself off at a sudden realization: the delcatty's poke ball is shaking. the purple ribbon left outside for it to take is also gone, so momo could only assume that the delcatty was lured by the promise of cuteness. once the poke ball stops shaking, momo holds the thing in her hands and cries out with joy. "wow, can you believe it? a day just goes from good to great to super great!! wow!!" [break][break]

on closer inspection, momo realized the boy's costume was totally matching with his pokemon! yes, an alolan marowak and kantonian marowak looked totally different, but how cute was it that the two of them could be seen together like this! [break][break]

still, he seemed to doubt her intentions, and momo realized it was because she looked just like all the other trick-and-treaters out there. the costume likely didn't help things, either. "oh, this isn't my stash! actually, i'm passing out candies this year! i was handing them out in front of my house, but my little yamper must have thought that i'd miss you from afar. here, have some for yourself and your pokemon!" [break][break]

she had the good candy, as in full-sized chocolate bars, bundles of lollipops, and packets of sour gummies. the candy bars were supposed to be for the really little kids only, but she couldn't help but feel like the other deserved it, anyway. "my name is momo, by the way! and i really like your costume!"

momo spent some time lost in thought, but the sound of the other's footsteps brought her back to attention. she smiled as the man approached her, turning to face him head-on. "mourning...ah, i guess you could say that." she always had a tough time with the word, as it meant admitting to loss in the first place. "i've heard of that tradition before, actually." before the rocket takeover of kanto, the only experience momo had with this tradition was the loss of her maternal grandparents during her childhood, both of who died of natural causes. [break][break]

what a different world kanto had been back then. but momo didn't have time to worry about that, not when the man — kouma was his name — had been so polite to her. she shook his hand in return, smiling. "it's nice to meet you, kouma! my name is momo." she once had a classmate named kouma, though he moved to paldea after just a year. even if this guy was totally different, the name alone sent a surge of nostalgia all throughout momo. [break][break]

"...are you mourning someone, too?" the question came out so quickly, it took a second for momo to realize what she just said. a gasp followed by a hand covering her mouth followed by her eyes widening in horror made it clear she regretted this sudden impulse. "i'm so sorry, i don't know why i said that just now! i, i didn't mean to..."

momo is ready to thank alia for the compliment, all proud and happy to have caught a new pokemon together with a new friend, but her entire train of thought is derailed by a simple sentence. [break][break]

i'd love to be friends and meet up more often. momo gasps quietly, and puts her hands in front of her face. "really? really really? do you mean it?" she speaks at the same time as alia, overlapping some of her words, and having to immediately apologizing for getting ahead of herself. [break][break]

momo dusts off her skirt and starts over, enunciating a cutely determined "ahem!" before fully speaking. "sorry, what i meant to say was, i'd be happy to be friends! meeting up often can be hard when traveling, and i'm on the road a lot because of contests and other stuff, too!" she says this not to discourage the idea of them hanging out, but to assuage the worry that they'll be too busy to hang out when the time comes. it's okay, momo thinks to herself. we've all got plenty of time! [break][break]

she also says, "but i totally get that! it's hard to just pick a place and stick with it, y'know?" the coordinator herself had once believed that home would be that place, but now she's not even sure if home is a place. "it's a small world! i'm positive we'll bump into each other somehow!" [break][break]

and now she's back on track, gearing towards that word of thanks she wanted to say to alia before the idea of friendship hit her harder than aimi's hammer ever could. "thanks, turns out catching pokemon can be super easy! guess it depends on luck, though?" she hopes none of the cute pokemon run away from her — that would just make her sad! [break][break]

GASP! "oh my gosh," momo squeaks, "a clefable! so cute! i'm gonna snatch her up!" she runs ahead before answering alia's question about coordinators, and together with aimi, scares the poor clefable into submission. it's not long before she returns with a newly caught pokemon in hand. "phew, that was tough! oh, but back to the coordinator thing! i love cute themes, so i'm always trying to win cute ribbons! but i like other special themes, too! as long as i can wear tons of ribbons and accessories, i'll enter any contest that lets me!"

momo is surprised by maki. not in the way that she can subtly communicate with her pokemon (because momo doesn't notice the intricacies between maki and her houndoom to start with), but how the other girl can look so put-together, so refined and make it seem effortless. even if maki hadn't been a coordinator before, she'd have every chance of winning a contest in the present day. momo is sure of it! [break][break]

perhaps being a trainer, or whatever else, is so busying that maki wouldn't want to waste her time on a totally different endeavor, anyway. but just as momo thinks this, the other girl surprises her again, admitting she wouldn't know where to start even if she did entertain the idea. [break][break]

"i could always help you!" momo offers. "ah, only if you wanted to, of course! i didn't mean to spring the idea so suddenly on you!" naturally there is an air of deference she has for her, the same that anyone would have towards a kind stranger, but there's something about maki yukimura that makes her seem like much more than a simple stranger. what could that be? [break][break]

yukimura? momo wonders for only a second before coming to a new conclusion, thoughts quickening in speed. no, wait, she couldn't be part of that yukimura family, could she? unless... perhaps she'd ask about it some other time, when it's more appropriate and less random (though random is how momo's brain works sometimes, truth be told.) [break][break]

no, instead, the pink-haired girl says, "y'know, i don't really get a lot of chances to talk about this with other people, if i'm being honest. so i appreciate you letting me try to steal you away into the contest scene!" her rotomphone pops out of her bag, floating around momo's head with a matching smile. "if it's okay, i'd like to give you my number! then i can text you about it whenever!" the traveling bit proves itself to be true, since momo frequently goes between lilycove, slateport, and any other city in hoenn where a contest is being held. she'd feel sad if her time with maki could only last for today, but would understand if the other girl preferred it that way. [break][break]

"ehehe..." momo laughs nervously. the tv screen in front of her is bright, and as the sky darkens outside, the images only get brighter. just two hours ago they had been watching some funny videos together, cackling and grinning like fools. now, the haunting on rotom street is playing, and by the hour mark, momo has lost most of her courage going into this. [break][break]

at first glance, everything seems peaceful. shigure and momo sit comfortably on the couch, a bowl of popcorn and other snacks laid out on the coffee table before them. their pokemon are either in their poke balls or chilling with them in the living room, too. most of momo's team is out right now, but not all of them are enjoying this experience equally. velvet the ribombee and silque the sylveon are terrified, but are more concerned with using their ribbons and feelers to cover the eyes of kira the cherubi — the newest addition to the team, the one who's been giggling and cooing despite not understanding what's actually going on. [break][break]

aimi the tinkaton, pure menace that she is, watches the movie with absolute joy, no doubt inspired by the sheer acts of violence and terror displayed on the screen. that leaves silver the grovyle as the only one not paying attention to the movie to begin with, the tall green pokemon coolly leaned against one of the living room walls, eyes closed as though he is trying to sleep (but in reality, he's keeping an eye on the entire room just in case). [break][break]

the coordinator naturally gravitates closer to her friend, nervous laughter ramping up bit-by-bit. "okay, okay, you're so right from before. this movie is way too much for me, but we're almost done, so maybe i can hold on until then—aah!" momo squeals as the next jumpscare catches her off guard, causing her to dive completely into shigure's arm. "fine, just tell me if the girl and the poochyena make it to the end, okay?!"

oh no, oh no, oh no! momo ran and ran and ran as far as her legs would take her. she looked between bushes, under rocks, behind piles of logs, underneath a vine shroud, and nothing! no sign of her bulbasaur. and when her pokemon returned from their search, they also came up empty.[break][break]

there had been a few rumors on the road about disappearing pokemon, yet everyone laughed it off, saying if you or your pokemon got lost while traveling so close to a major city, then you deserved it. momo didn't necessarily agree with those statements, but she also didn't expect herself to become one of those victims. [break][break]

the problem was that she didn't know the area very well, and all the trainers on the road looked too busy to bother themselves with someone else's problem. momo, growing discouraged, spotted someone that also seemed to be looking for something. she approached him slowly, then stopped, wide-eyed at the familiar visage. she had never met the man in person before, but she definitely recognized his face! was that really josh devlin, the master of faster? [break][break]

whether it was or wasn't him, however, didn't matter. momo couldn't pass up yet another opportunity to ask for help. she carefully approached the other, swallowing her fear. "excuse me, you didn't happen to see a lost bulbasaur, did you? it was just here with me and the rest of my pokemon, but then suddenly it was gone, and i know what you're thinking, but i swear that my bulbasaur would never run off for no reason!" realizing she sounded a bit panicked, momo paused. she sighed quietly, and added on: "sorry, sorry. i'm just so worried. i heard about rumors of pokemon disappearing around here, so i couldn't help but wonder..." [break][break]

trick or treat! it's the one time of year where everyone celebrates for some harmless fun and sweet treats. momo remembers many fond nights spent trick or treating in her childhood. while she no longer finds the need to trick or treat in her young adulthood, she does like passing out candy, and seeing all the cute costumes of the trick-and-treaters on her street! [break][break]

"make sure everyone gets some candy!" she tells her pokemon friends. tonight, she's brought out silver the grovyle, leaf the bulbasaur, and kokoro the yamper as her candy helpers. silver, taller than most of the kids, gently passes out packs of sour gummy bears. meanwhile, leaf uses its vine whip to hand out lollipops to everyone. and kokoro is so excited, he barks happily at anyone passing by, chasing down kids and making them laugh, only to gently hand them a candy pouch it had been holding in its mouth, instead. [break][break]

when momo turns to look, she sees that her yamper is chasing down someone else, insistent on giving candy to them. "kokoro, wait up!" she runs after it, and finally catches up when the yamper stops at a young boy's heels. momo takes note of his fiery red hair and bright golden eyes. despite looking young, he's taller than her, and so she looks up at him with a polite smile. "hi there," she says. "looks like my yamper just really wants to give you some candy, hehe!"
