there's a catch in genny's voice and the slightest wrinkle in her happy smiles when reminiscing about the old boyfriend. momo's expression softens — she hadn't meant to bring up old memories like that. [break][break]

but not all of it is bad! the super cute togetic has stuck it through with genny, and it's all because of a chance encounter during that time. momo giggles as the pokemon flies around her, and reaches out to give the softest touch against its pearl-white wings. "aw, that's great! i'm happy for little wright, but maybe you're not so little, huh?" another laugh escapes the coordinator as she reaches out again to gently touch wright, a small budding show of affection and friendship. [break][break]

"oh my gosh, so nice to meet you, orville and serenity!" she happily introduces herself to genny's teddiursa and sylveon, giving them both big squeezes! so soft, so fluffy! "since we're all out having a lovely day, i want you guys to meet some of my other pokemon, too." momo summons aimi the tinkaton and silque the sylveon out to the field, clapping at the sight of two sylveons next to each other. "let's all be best friends, okay? and play nice!" that last statement made especially towards aimi, who just grins mischievously in response. [break][break]

as their pokemon play around and greet each other, momo glances at chica, and realizes the chikorita is motioning for her trainer to investigate something. the pink-haired girl nods, and follows chica's lead. eating a few berries dropped from a nearby tree is... a wild cherubi, innocent and hungry! it hasn't even noticed momo or chica yet, and the coordinator reaches for a spare poke ball without a second thought. [break][break]

"you're mine!" momo cries out triumphantly while tossing a ball. chica helps with a razor leaf, and though the move isn't very effective against cherubi, it's enough of a force to surprise the cherry pokemon, and lower its guard as momo's poke ball hits it square on the stem. shake once, shake twice, shake three times and...! "yes!" the perfect day for momo! she has more friends than she knows what to do with! yamper, bulbasaur, and now cherubi! [break][break]

"today has been just the greatest! thanks soooo much, big sis genny!" momo hugs the other with a running start, laughing and giggling all the while. it's not just one or two or three friends that momo has made today, but many and she counts herself lucky that despite everything, there will always be wonderful people in her life to remind her of the abundant joy that exists all around her. what a great day! [break][break]

momo loves gardens! it's enough that there are beautiful flowers and crops to be grown within, but to share that experience with other people? to be a part of something, to have communal love and care manifest in the form of plants? and to have the plants share their harvest with the humans who lovingly took care of them in the first place? [break][break]

the entire thing from start to finish is just lovely, in her eyes. in hoenn there are many shared gardens, and momo figures that sharing a garden with someone might be beneficial, especially since the coordinator herself is so busy with travel and contests that she can't always be the sole caretaker of a garden. when she first expressed her concerns, the lovely people in charge of managing the gardens reassured her that more than one person would take care of the garden. it would thrive even when momo herself isn't there! [break][break]

momo doesn't know much about the others sharing her garden, only that one is a ranger named mika nakayama. oh, and mika's sunflora, hina, is often left behind as a garden pokemon! every time momo visits, she waves at the beautiful little sunflower, and giggles brightly when the sunflora waves back. the small plot of land is dedicated to some wonderful berry trees and flower patches, most of which grows uninhibited and free. [break][break]

"don't you just love this place, velvet?" momo asks her ribombee. the pokemon loves pollen and flowers, so momo figured it would feel right at home in this place, and that she'd venture to bring the pokemon along with her whenever she came to visit the garden! "it smells so good! and there's not a single other pokemon in sight—hey!" [break][break]

the pink-haired girl spots something concerning. swiping premature berries from the tree is a tall, grass-like pokemon. from momo's perspective, the thing is still halfway-blocked by leaves, but if she just takes a hop, step, and jump forward, she can see it for what it clearly is! [break][break]

"a grovyle?" momo wonders aloud. "hey, no stealing!" she runs straight in its direction, and velvet the ribombee follows her trainer's lead. "put that down where you got it! hey, that's not nice!" [break][break]

as momo throws herself between the grovyle and the tree, the former is so surprised that it has no choice but to back away, berries slipping from its frenzied grasp. the coordinator huffs and puffs, annoyed that some pokemon just have no manners! how could this grovyle steal from this garden when so much love and care was put into it? [break][break]

but on second glance, something's not quite right with this grovyle. without the berries occupying space in its arms, momo can see its entire body for what it is: thin, bruised, and battered. parts of its green skin and red underbelly darken to a deep plum color, cold and prickly in the way that the wounds look old, as though it'd been barely surviving all this time. [break][break]

and with the unripe berries now bleeding as juice in its hands, it seems it won't be getting any more nutrients any time soon. "oh... oh no..." momo feels tears pricking her eyes, but she doesn't know what to do. stealing is so, so bad, but not eating is just as worse. and this garden may not belong to the grovyle, but does that have to mean that he'll be shunned from it as he'd been every other opportunity before this? [break][break]

does the answer have to be as cruel as the problem itself? "...listen," momo starts to say to the pokemon, "no more stealing from this day on." [break][break]

the grovyle seems to struggle between wanting to leave or lash out, but under the scrutiny of a much healthier ribombee and the pokemon's trainer, doesn't do either of those things. he simply takes a step back, eyes narrowing as though it can try to understand momo's intentions. [break][break]

she inhales audibly. "why don't we work together, instead?" momo brings out an empty poke ball from her bag. "you seem hungry, but also strong. i could use a friend like you, and, wouldn't you know it? i have more food than i know what to do with!" it's not a lie as the scent of sweets and packaged snacks in momo's bag would have attracted any pokemon, much less a hungry one! grovyle's eyes flicker from the girl to her bag, and back to the girl again. she adds on, "so what do you say, grovyle? wanna come with me instead?" [break][break]

grovyle doesn't agree right away. it regards momo with all the disbelief in the world, only worn down by its own exhaustion and lack of strength. it nods at ribombee as though to say i'm not going down without a fight. and thankfully velvet understands right away, and momo trusts her to win the fight. [break][break]

one short fight later, and a shaky poke ball rolls to a stop, the air fluttering with pollen and stardust — a silver wind ushering in a new age. [break][break]

momo picks up the poke ball, and places it near her cheek, closing her eyes against a world full of flowers and reverie, her pink hair tossed with the sweet wind. "things will get better," she promises to the grovyle within the capsule. "you'll see." [break][break]

"yay! thanks so much!" she'd never been a big fan of just catching pokemon for fun, if only because she felt sad that she wouldn't have a home for each and every little guy. but as her travels have brought her to hoenn, momo realizes that having more pokemon in case of emergencies is a good idea. though in this case, the only emergencies that yamper and bulbasaur can solve are cute ones, hehe! [break][break]

but being with big sis genny has taught momo something...she had always wanted siblings in her life, especially a sister. an unconditional friend, a stalwart ally, a reliable and responsible older sister that makes momo feel safe. and that's a difficulty feeling to capture these days, so momo clings onto it, and sticks closer to genny as a result. [break][break]

"your togetic is super cute by the way! how'd you guys meet?" a simple question to pass the time, especially because the nearby foongus and electabuzz don't exactly stick out to momo, and she's fine to pass them by, instead. [break][break]

"you're the best, big sis genny!" she really is, for who else would take such good care of momo? who would see a good match between some pokemon and trainers and allow it to be? and when chica one day grows into a huuuge meganium, momo will be happy to share that experience with genny, too! [break][break]

"i hear something in the distance...what's that?" momo carefully investigates the source of the next noise she hears. there are a few pokemon flying too fast for her to see, but then, in a most glorious and empty meadow, lies her next friend in waiting. [break][break]

a beautiful bulbasaur! the perfect starter friend for chica! the pink-haired girl has to hide her full excitement, so she doesn't scare the bulbasaur with her energy by accident! [break][break]

she waits for the bulbasaur to turn its back, before striking it with a poke ball. it doesn't resist for long, and momo squeals at yet another successful capture! bulbasaur is coming home with her! "this is so fantastic! okay, maybe one more little looksie ahead, and i'll be good. there are so many cute friends out here!" [break][break]

gasp! now there is a friend waiting for momo! in matching perfect pinkness, with all the whimsy of a fairy-type, but also a bit of creepiness that comes with being a shiinotic of all pokemon... to sum up, it's a wonderful addition to the team. momo doesn't hesitate, and tells silque the sylveon to hit the shiinotic with a swift attack! [break][break]

while the mushroom-like pokemon is caught off guard by the sudden attack, momo uses this chance and throws a poke ball at it! it shakes once! it shakes twice! it shakes three times in a row!! then it stops, and momo finally exhales. [break][break]

"alright, fishing may have been a bust, but finding a new friend has been very successful for us!" she places her hands on her hips, smiling at her pokemon triumphantly. "let's head back out for now, we got what we came for! but next time, let's definitely catch something with the rod, okay?" [break][break]

the pink-haired girl retrieves the poke ball, and places the newly-caught pokemon into her bag. time to go home! [break][break]

oops, that's just a wugtrio. not like a wugtrio is bad or ugly or anything, but momo doesn't see a wugtrio belonging to her team in particular. she lowers her binoculars, and shakes her head to silque the sylveon in response. "good catch, but that's not the one. i don't feel it, y'know? the energy, i mean! so maybe there's something better for us elsewhere..." [break][break]

her fishing line reacts with a new catch. momo is quick to abandon the wugtrio and see what's at the end of her line, and...! oops, a rock. not a pokemon, and only marginally better than that single boot she caught before. ugh. [break][break]

the hope for bringing home a new friend becomes lesser and lesser as the moments drag on... [break][break]

"hehe, i promise i won't let aimi get that far. who knew a pokemon so cute could also be so active?" violent is the better word for it, but sticks and stones! "if we can find other fairy-types, that would be nice, too! any pokemon you're particularly looking forward to catching?" what sorts of things do rangers look for in pokemon, anyway? probably really helpful ones in case of natural disasters and stuff, or super cool ones that can demolish anything or take them anywhere! [break][break]

"and thanks so much for coming out here with me, by the way! i'm really happy just to spend some time!" momo can't beat the experience of meeting new people and coming out of an adventure as friends with them; she smiles at alia widely, ever thankful for the ranger's presence. "on that note, i think we're in for some cute discoveries today!" there's a rustling not too far ahead of them, and momo places a hand on one of her spare poke balls in anticipation. [break][break]

yet alia's mention of home leaves momo at a loss for what to say. it's a simple topic to bring up, really. but when momo thinks of home, the first place that comes to mind is lavender town in kanto. a small town, made only popular by the tower dedicated to the lives of pokemon and people that have passed within it. a place where the trees rustled and bloomed with a gentle wind, a place where momo made most of her memories growing up, surrounded by family and friends. a place that no longer exists today. [break][break]

too much sadness to speak of at once, so instead, momo keeps it simple and vague. "i actually moved to hoenn not too long ago, either! i have a place in lilycove, now!" which is true enough, at least. though she hardly spends much time in that house, to start with. "and if it's not too much to say, i'd happily be one of your new hoenn friends! you'd practically be mine, too!" despite her cheery disposition, it's hard to get a foothold in a region filled with so much diversity and strife. even just someone like alia who can venture out with momo once in a while would make for a lovely companion, if not a lonely one. "oh, look! something's in that tree!" [break][break]

momo motions for her tinkaton to wait. after a minute or so, the noise in the tree reveals its source: a floating ribombee, sweet and gentle as it gathers up pollen in its tiny hands. the coordinator grins widely, and waits for the pokemon to turn its back to her before launching a poke ball in its direction. after a successful ambush, the ribombee stays stuck in the ball. gotcha! "yay, it's mine! i'm going to name you velvet!" momo says as she scoops up the newest addition to her team!

"oh wow! i'm not an experienced trainer, but battles are so fun! i just think—oh, aimi, don't make that silly face!" momo says as she softly taps aimi on the head, the tinkaton blinking up at its trainer with a surprised expression. the rest of it goes unsaid: momo knows aimi has a violent streak, and any new pokemon poses itself as a potential target/fight, but that doesn't mean she gets to provoke maki's pokemon without a little scolding! (plus, maki's houndoom looks like it can more than hold its own in a battle, and momo sees the type matchup just the same. not the best idea to start a fight just to get aimi's ego crushed in the end.) [break][break]

but then maki says some magic words asking about the contest world, and momo's eyes light up. "contests are super fun! there's a lot of technicality that goes into it, too, so you could say that coordinators are always balancing style, planning, and execution! and if you win a contest, there are some really awesome rewards!" plus, there are several cities in hoenn known for hosting contests, so traveling can be fun, too! there's so much momo could say about contests and why she loves them, but she won't go into the full rant. [break][break]

instead, she'll just be honest, and say what's on her mind. "you know, maki, you'd probably be really successful as a coordinator! there are so many aesthetics any coordinator could go for, and i feel like there are a few really pretty ones that would fit your style!"

why are tinkatons so violent? momo had thought her own tinkaton, aimi, was already a little on the aggressive side, but hers is nothing compared to the ones roving throughout hoenn, knocking down corviknights and destroying metal structures. then again, she vaguely remembers her time spent in paldea, and how when her parents allowed her to get a tinkatink from the region during their vacation there, and yet they were advised by many to 'never let the tinkatink evolve if they know what's good for the world.' [break][break]

so this violent fate is universal for tinkatons, after all... "aimi, please, remember you're better than these other tinkatons, okay?" momo tells this to her pokemon, knowing full well that if she left her eyes off the tinkaton for even a minute, the hammer pokemon would be joining her sisters in this reckless destruction. "come on, don't look at me like that. let's just keep the other ones away! we can't have them terrorizing everyone like that..." as a tinkaton trainer herself, momo feels obligated to help, and scaring away a group of tinkaton that managed to bring down a small radio tower in rustboro city is a good way to start. [break][break]

of course, she's not the only interested party. it seems people have been trying to rid themselves of the tinkatons for some time, and so this is just one of many incidents of its kind. momo makes a note of all the trainers around her, careful to not let aimi be mistaken for a wild tinkaton, instead. yet, she spots someone in the distance, using their own pokemon to scare off the tinkaton, but not realizing there's a small one trying to sneak up on behind them. "not so fast! aimi, use your gigaton hammer!" [break][break]

thankfully, the wild tinkaton is smaller and weaker, and aimi's bigger hammer is enough to send the wild thing packing. great! momo thinks to herself. wouldn't want to see other people getting hurt, after all. she runs up to meet this other trainer, giving a wave. "need some help? there was one sneaking up behind you, y'know!" then she quickly gestures to her own tinkaton and shakes her head. "oh, this one's mine, don't worry!"
