Adrian might have been doubting of the plausibility of it all, but when he hears Kingsman's name, it gives him certain assurances. The Ranger had done well by him, had a good head on his shoulders and was, in his eyes, likely the most sympathetic one of their bunch. If it had been any other name, he would have been skeptical to put such trust in them... He makes this exception.[break][break]

Their hand to his chest, he finds only sincerity in Rowan's voice, feeling pity for them and the life they've had to lead. He'd been made to do cruel things, but he was not himself cruel. Adrian wanted this for him too, and yet—it was not an easy thing.[break][break]

"I know." Regardless of their familial obligations to one another, they were his betters—placed into positions of power, authority—and Rocket would not so easily let either of them go. Even if they were family—especially if they were family.[break][break]

Adrian does not have the answers, but neither would he wish for Rowan to remain. It's a tragic thing, and he finds momentary comfort in their touch, but it cannot break the gloom falling over them.[break][break]

"...Maybe there is a way." But it would not be so simple as to happen overnight, and so they would have to sleep on it, mulling over the ultimatums and repercussions of such a loaded predicament.[break][break]

But he wanted this for Rowan. Such a gentle thing was not meant for this life, and he would attain a certain peace of mind knowing they were free of it.

A strained glance finds him lacking the privilege of perception he once withheld—but he strains all the same. In the resulting uproar it's not entirely unlikely many will fixate their attention on the ZACIAN or the TING-LU, but Adrian feels only apprehension.
Waves of it keep him from his task, making him meek.[break][break]

An UNOWN is his only visible company, as it is the only creature from whom he may gain the insight into this conflict, which he desires greatly in the absence of a certain benefactor. Many will have noted the strange, black fragments—a curiosity. But past experiences have made him cautious of such things.[break][break]

Adrian chooses to fixate on the ANCIENT TOMB, to let the initial skirmish resolve itself in the interim, though he is not the first to make this approach. Shred, Naomi Sato and perhaps others are keen on establishing a measure of control over the area—something he can appreciate, given the situation.[break][break]

He doesn't need special eyes with black sclera to know they are outnumbered. Whether they wanted it or not, he would try to help them. It comforted him too that, in his own way, MARTÍNDELMAR was also looking out for them.[break][break]

There's a flash of light that could be mistaken for lightning—and it hurtles towards their ranks from an airborne vantage point. Reflexively and without no alternative, he can only hope they manage to deflect it: "COUNTER IT!"[break][break]

Adrian's brows raise in a furl, wondering if he's been misunderstood. It didn't ultimately matter to him what became of Razz, but as someone recently ousted and condemned by the public, he knew it wasn't preferrable. And for what Razz had done for him, Adrian might've felt he was owed that much: A fair warning.[break][break]

"Just giving some friendly advice—wouldn't want our friend ruining his good name." Without being privy to his background, Adrian had only ever imagined him as some model citizen and ranger. It would be a shame to have all that tarnished by surrounding himself with seditionists and insurrectionists.[break][break]

Restless in these benighted lands, he does not remain still, shifting his feet and constantly glancing to the surrounding environment. When the wind shifts, he finds his hairs standing on end, though he does not recognize any voices present.[break][break]

Even still their sinister calls offer insight. What was otherwise jumbled nonsense proved to be quite telling, he slowly realizes, though he was all too engrossed in the threatening presence to give it much thought just then.[break][break]

At the very least however, his hunch seemed to have paid off. Clearly they had provoked a reaction from the borderlands, and although he was generally ignored by the lingering spirits, he remained ever ill at ease.[break][break]

"Sounds like someone's got a grudge—anyone care to explain...?"

It is Adrian who steps out from within that dark threshold, materializing first as a silhouette, and then the dimly lit features of the marked man now known across Hoenn. His forward pace falters, though he seems relaxed, perhaps owed to a shared affiliation; he and Eris both have strong ties to the criminal organization Team Rocket. Adrian is curious, then, where Razz has drawn the line for himself...[break][break]

"Out for a leisurely stroll, are we?" Derision comes naturally, and though he has pressing matters to see to, Adrian decides to make their little jaunt his business. After all, fate had seen these three brought together before, and at no less an auspicious juncture; surely it was a reasonable ploy, then, to see what may come of their present meeting? There remained only one way to be certain.[break][break]

"You must be more careful who you surround yourself with, Kingsman. Others may begin to suspect you of... something," he quips, drawing attention to the aforementioned political lines.[break][break]

There was another child, Adrian recollects, that does not seem to be present. Though his name escapes Adrian, the memory of him remains forever ingrained in his mind, and so he doesn't fail to mention it.[break][break]

"Is that other child accompanying you still?"

DEVELOPMENT By bringing Adrian/Yveltal into Team Rocket publicly, I think we've been able to add another believable showcase for the practical rationalities of League dissenters. Milo Sharpe echoes much of Adrian's thoughts post-Regirock Raid in their encounter here, allowing them to build a bridge where otherwise Adrian existed only as a one-off antagonist, and providing an approachable view of the organization. Furthermore, this helps Adrian lean into the role more, feeling less and less like a black sheep of the organization, knowing that his feelings are shared even by those as yet allied with them.[break][break]

COLLAB When possible, Adrian attempts to see Yveltal's will exerted upon the world and its constituents. Although finding real opportunities to fulfill this obligation are sparse and often done with ulterior motives, recent events (such as the revivals upon Mt. Pyre) have provided Adrian/Yveltal with a fresh host of targets. When applicable, I do intend to make inquiries about whether an interacting player(s) pokemon might trigger a more demanding response. (Seen here, when Derek brought out a Charizard that had recently been killed during a previous Ranger Raid, only to have been revived at Mt. Pyre later—making it a prime example, and regrettably a target of Yveltal and its chosen Executioner.)[break][break]

Although it has yet to be explored as thoroughly, there exists in his obligations to Yveltal an opportunity for Adrian to work with any League counterpart(s), keeping his options open and holding him less accountable to either side by virtue of this higher calling. This helps him fit into the role of antihero or Byronic hero, in my eyes, as he can achieve the moody, self-righteous niche while ultimately collaborating with anyone regardless of affiliation. Creative use of this playable space in The Borderlands is also intended to help bring others closure, while ultimately relying on Yveltal as a plot device and narrative tool.[break][break]

EMBODIMENT I think in many ways I have written Yveltal to mirror some of Adrian's traits, but on reconsidering, I think it is that Adrian has had these features magnified the more I am able to enjoy writing the macabre of Yveltal's ambiance and demeanor while tackling the recent developments of being another personae non grata in the Hoenn political theater. Rather than being the hedonistic, life loving rockstar wannabe with high aspirations he was originally crafted as, he's become an incredibly forlorn creature of desperation—a sad, jealous thing. And I believe that has synced up my vision of them both well.

any notes/comments: Recently I've made sure to let people know characters would be aware of Adrian's affiliations, abandoning the secrecy, and I think that has helped broaden opportunities—as opposed to narrowing any potential with special asks, etc. It also helps him to feel alive in the world, able to be mentioned by more people during adjacent narrative beats.[break][break]

The posts are supposed to be from April so I didn't gather up anything from outside that range, I'm unsure if I could've tied all of that up in the collaborative/characterization areas of the assessment, but to play it safe I left anything else out. (e.g. Disassociate, misc. narrative mentions)

"Yeah, I'll be over later today." Adrian navigates the redundant back-and-forth as he and Serena fail to successfully hang up on the other. When the call finally ends, he's stuck heading towards the self-checkout at a local mini mart, clicking the phone shut before stuffing it in his pocket. Luckily, due to their heavy influence over the city, he can go about his day freely.[break][break]

But even still, he wears his hair down, allowed the sides to grow out. Anyone who knew him wouldn't be fooled, but the odd citizen might turn a blind eye to him, dressed down as he was. Eventually he'd find an available terminal, and quickly make his way back out onto the city proper after grabbing a receipt.[break][break]

Seeing to his last few errands, he makes his way on foot, eventually arriving to rap his fingers against the front door of Serena's place.

As Adrian manages to make himself ready to continue exploring, he casts a weary glance from out over the misty veil of the mountains, watching as spritely entities flowed along their final procession. He would've liked to see beneath, to the valley below where he would be disembarking, but not even his eyes could penetrate the greater fog enshrouding the borderlands.[break][break]

One could be forgiven for doubting a stranger at their word, much as Adrian would now. Part of him relates to the message—and the one who gives it by proxy—but the situation is too delicate for him to turn such a blind eye to a potential threat, as impassioned as they may be.[break][break]

"How long have you been rehearsing that?" He'd dissented from the League much the same way they were now, and they must have ruminated those same thoughts time and time again before using them here and now. Part of him wishes to allow that modicum of trust, to see where it led him.[break][break]

Inundated by a sea of flames, Yveltal's silhouette fades with the rising inferno as Adrian and Copperajah are forced to seek shelter. The blaze casts a roiling glow across the crag, dissipating the lingering shroud. Placing a palm against Copperajah with a reassuring touch, Adrian siphons an onze of its renewed vitality before withdrawing it, securing the pokeball to his belt. With his gift he is able to withstand the wildfire long enough to escape its licking flames—but only just.[break][break]

He pats away at embers, but trains his eyes ahead: White-on-black eyes disrupt his features as Adrian gleans the source of its sudden fervor: In Apollo he sees the tellings of an aberrant aura, a blight upon the earth. It calls out to be purged.[break][break]

"Derek..." Adrian considers this a foregone conclusion, expressing his sympathies, yet ultimately reconciling with the necessitation of this act. Though the roaring pyrostorm makes communication meaningless, it is nonetheless spoken. But then, from out of the hellfire and brimstone, comes the sleek, daunting guise of Yveltal, blanketed in a miasma that smoldered with the overbearing heat...[break][break]

With a fel shriek it swoops, its ghastly visage outlined in phantasmagoria as it plunges towards Apollo, meaning to leave its benighted mark upon it...[break][break]
