The verdant petals shiver from such opulence, allowing beads of water to run down the length of his torso, coalescing just above the brim of his trunks. He's somewhere backstage while Melody is performing, trying to make sure their equipment is up to snuff. Rillaboom and Toxtricity are testing the percussion and stereos respectively, while Adrian tries to soothe his nerves by playing with his favorite striped canine. Even from back here, Melody's song inspires vivid imagery of his plight to see Howitzer returned to him hale and whole.[break][break]

Some of it tragically breaks away from the tone he'd struck, jarring him back to reality as readily as Callan Young barging into the room when it's nearly time to take the stage. Well, I guess I can't just sit in here petting Howie all day... Howitzer pulls him out of his slump with a couple boops of that wet snoot that lift his spirits.

With a few minutes to spare until showtime, and the equipment ready, Adrian's free to wander. He's content to casually linger, soaking up the limelight where he can, when he becomes acutely aware of Rowan and his sister's absence. "Howie, see if you can't find them!"[break][break]

Howitzer runs down Rowan Wrynn quickly enough, letting Rowan know he wasn't too far. Serena Malcolm was proving much more difficult to track however.

Howitzer is winded despite her outward stoicism, heaving lungfulls of air to placate the burning in her torso, while Rover teeters around suffering from a dizzy spell. After exerting themselves tirelessly beneath the blaring sunlight, it's only to be expected. He too grabs for their respective pokeballs, digits tapping against the nodules to instigate a similar process. With his pokemon withdrawn, they can rest easy for the moment knowing they performed well.[break][break]

Aside from acknowledging the formalities, all that's left is to get the badge before he can retreat somewhere less brutal on one with his complexion. But first, he's overtaken by a sense of sentimentality over Howitzer's 'first' battle.[break][break]

"I suppose I should thank you," Adrian starts off a little hesitantly, before following through: "It's been... a long time since I got to battle with Howitzer. You gave us something to work together towards. Thanks."[break][break]

There's a lingering grin that seems almost uncharacteristic on someone like Adrian. Maybe a little uncanny, even.[break][break]

It felt like old times. Which all in all, were the only good times they would probably see again. Being able to revisit past milestones was oddly cathartic, considering.[break][break]

Suffering a series of devastating blows, Kubfu is thrown back against the cement, where it receives a harsh roadrash from the brief altercation with Lucario. It swipes its forearm against its muzzle, spitting something out to the side after. It's exactly what Kubfu expected, and yet...

...That feeling a moment ago was euphoric. It relishes that sensation.

Not the bone-rattling strike, but the moment where Lucario was for a moment whelmed. Where Kubfu's might had amounted to more than some meager success, but something profound. Impressive in the face of adversity. Adrian encourages it from the sidelines. Another feeling that it craved.

Mustering its resolve, Kubfu feels itself BULK UP as it tries to grow from their clash, ignoring the biting pain of injury for the fervor of intense battle.

Kubfu manages to evade the attack, but the shards of stone that splinter and scatter in the aftermath would leave welts where they pelted against its side. With a wince Kubfu regains its lost composure, subsequently falling into a headlong rush in order to close the gap between contestants.

It's not ignorant to the challenge fighting toe-to-toe with Lucario poses, but it doesn't stand a chance fighting from afar. Just another daunting realization as it clashes against this quality contender. Flinging itself with a skyward lunge, Kubfu seeks to overwhelm Lucario with a spontaneous fit of its REVENGE.

Eyes like midnight can only confirm that the identity eludes him, not that knowing would make a difference. Awareness is simply a commodity, and whether he preferred to act with it, he could do without.

Kubfu seems less self-assured as the tournament goes on, not that he blames the little tyke; back-to-back matches must be more exhausting than their typical training, but the experience is invaluable to them all the same.

Kubfu would just have to endure. Despite striking a lethal pose, the stern slant of its brow weighs heavier with worry than aggression staring down this opponent whose reach and speed far outstrips its own abilities. Tch.

Determination could only ever get you so far. Kubfu required something more.
