It was silent between them for a moment as he deliberated how to begin their training. It was possible it would be seen by the upper brass, so he wanted to keep things brisk.[break][break]

Anything that becomes habitual, is too easily used against us as trainers," Adrian gestures to a collection of badges tucked against his coat's lining. Although many struck out to break the mold, most of their gyms were still stepped in tradition.[break][break]

Specialties, type obsessions... These things were not themselves weaknesses, but through over-reliance could become the Achille's heel to any competent trainer that makes a name for themselves. Gym Leaders all had a niche they fell into that was regularly exploited by challengers. The real world didn't operate on that system. Teambuilding was something that should be done with a more calculated approach.

But with so many options, where to even begin?[break][break]

"I myself have a habit of running the same teams, challenging opponents with optimal type match-ups and raw firepower." He sucks in a sharp breath of air before he can continue to further elucidate on his point.[break][break]

"Though at its core it is fundamentally necessary to battling, many would benefit from the inclusion of status moves, pokemon selected for their utility and not just demonstrable power. We're going to explore the value of them today through a bit of a demonstration," Adrian primes two pokeballs.[break][break]

When they're released, Cygne can see an Oranguru and Runerigus appear, the latter forming as an ouroboros against the floor's surface and nothing more. Unusual.[break][break]

"It's my first time battling with these two using a new strategy I hope to develop further. I'd like you, using your current team or any substitutions you feel necessary, to challenge this set. You may use any pokemon in your possession," Adrian gestures towards a kiosk on the far side of the room for withdrawing pokemon.[break][break]

"When you're ready, we can begin."[break][break]

Once they released their pokemon, Adrian starts with some setup, playing the long game.[break][break]

"Runerigus, TOXIC SPIKES. Oranguru, INSTRUCT."[break][break]

A double set of poisonous caltrops are ejected across their arena, limiting their paths of approach drastically.

Out here there is much to be rumagged through, enough that one could be forgiven for overlooking something obvious. The water here is veiled in a growing pitch as the ocean deepens, dispersing the limited light that reaches here. So at first he doesn't see it.[break][break]

Footsteps clicking beyond the door compel him to quiet mid-sentence. He flashes Derek a dismissive look before resigning himself to placidity, keeping to his seat.[break][break]

"More on that later," he assured Derek.[break][break]

With a measured gait two of Hoenn's elected officials walk in one after the other, stern in their cordiality. Adrian allows himself to nod at each of them, rather than interrupt what proves to be a curt greeting. Of the two, the latter prompts his attention by locking down the room. Uneasy begins to scratch the surface, but his misgivings gradually subside.[break][break]

It seems they were expected to present something themselves, not that Adrian had prepared anything. He'd been asked to come purely for his involvement in the Desert Ruins Raid, or so he was led to believe.[break][break]

Was there something else?[break][break]

Derek manages to elucidate on that, after a winded introduction for his own sake, which he can't be sure was necessary—but at least it paints him innocently.[break][break]

The meteor? That was the last thing he wanted to think about. Beyond that, he previously had no reason to doubt the League's intended plan of action. Clearly, Derek did.[break][break]

With a questioning scowl leveraged at Derek, Adrian asks bluntly: "Let me get this straight... you want a contingency for dealing with the meteor's collision?"[break][break]

Should he have reason to believe it might fail, then...?[break][break]

This proved more worrying than he originally anticipated.[break][break]

Even more vexing, he wondered how that related to his involvement during the Ruins Raid. More questions...[break][break]

He would need resolve to silence to learn much else.

But they were also valuable captures, and may even fetch a fair price on the black market. These swarms also had the best odds of producing a shiny variant of a species, another price-bloating factor that Adrian wouldn't overlook.[break][break]

Wading through the shallows makes him uneasy as feet filled with trepidation scour the water bed; even the slightest protrusion, outcropping or lump is imagined to be the gnarled tooth of some underwater ambush predator, whether it was Eelektross, Huntail or something else entirely. He doesn't want to be out here longer than necessary.[break][break]

When he finally spots the swarm, it's game on.[break][break]
