It's an indelicate news headline that brings the news: had passed away during Team Rocket's takeover of Petalburg, the title reads as he flicks through his phone in the dim of Sootopolis. There will be a ceremony—one he cannot attend himself—ending upon Ever Grande. He shuts off his phone and slumps against a tree, taking a moment to reminisce about a trainer who was no more...[break][break]

I should have done more—I can't believe he's...[break][break]

Deliberate acts of obfuscating intel on Derek Hoffman's hideouts were not enough to avert this fate for him. Team Rocket had been heavy-handed in their insurgence, Derek was not the only casualty—but he was the only one that mattered to Adrian.[break][break]

Maybe he was a terrible friend, but he couldn't even remember how they'd first met. It was maybe five years ago—it might not have stood out in memory—but they had never failed to answer his calls when he made them. They were one of the good ones.[break][break]

He should have put more faith in Derek, back then. His stance on the League had been so shaky—he wasn't certain he could trust anyone—but Derek had never given him a reason to doubt him. And yet he kept him mostly at arm's length—such a waste.[break][break]

A capable trainer, sometimes to the point Adrian wondered why he bothered bringing him into situations he could've easily handled alone. Perhaps these were fruitless attempts to garner a friendship—which was a harsh realization, considering how difficult he made it for others to get close, at times.[break][break]

Their shared sentiment was part of what kept them in touch, Adrian thought, wiping away this brief sorrow. Neither of them wholly trusted the League... But they both navigated this feeling very differently.[break][break]

Adrian had become the League's enemy, while Derek sought to become the change he hoped to see within the League, rising to higher stations.[break][break]

But not all contributions were valued. Perhaps sometimes, it is simply too late to change a thing—maybe then it is better to simply replace it. Adrian could not change them, Derek could not change them—so he arrived at his own conclusion, if only after the contrived interference of certain benefactors.[break][break]

That did not make Derek wrong. It made him human.[break][break]

Eventually, fate would force his hand, and Adrian would oppose Derek. Even then he held back, hoping to spare Derek the worst, but he could not refuse Yveltal. That day, he should have lost his friend...[break][break]

And his losses would continue... But by some strange twist of fate, Derek had shown him mercy he didn't deserve—even if only out of pity, or some other misbegotten human impulse. The empathy he'd shown that day was something Adrian had held onto...[break][break]

It was all of it wasted, those days were over...[break][break]

Adrian can appreciate the desperation that comes of toiling after something for months, with no return. It's not an unfamiliar feeling. But there is nothing for Howard left to do but swallow it down... And he seems to do just that.[break][break]

"Hmm." Howard would succeed. Sometimes, persistence was their only fallback—building up enough interia to push through at the last...[break][break]

Adrian did not know his mind—could not assuage him anymore than he had. But he didn't need it.[break][break]

Gyarados withdrawn, he sends out Copperajah.[break][break]

"Give me a hand," he insists to the pokemon, unpacking his belongings to try and set up a camp within the quarry. It would be done while Howard processed this latest failure of theirs...[break][break]

It's not easy to quell the rage and defy the adrenaline—to refuse the buildup of stigma against today's assault and the guilty party. But... their orders were their orders.[break][break]

He kept his gaze low—refusing to look people in the eyes. Gyarados followed closely beside him, as they stepped out towards the ruined crater wall and the Origin Cave—a vault cracked open wide, spilling out its contents for the thieves...[break][break]

...Why call for a truce now?[break][break]

It just made it all seem so... fruitless.[break][break]

"Furor... go find anyone still caught in the surf. Bring them to dry land," he says, dismissing his pokemon. He wished to be alone for a time—as alone as he could be out here.[break][break]

Walking towards the Origin Cave only as the subsiding waters allowed, Adrian saw another historical landmark marred by their conflict. He tried to imagine what it must mean to the natives—if Eterna City's statue, or the ruins atop Mt. Coronet had been destroyed by foreigners—what is it he would feel...? This crime was no different.[break][break]

They were the guilty party in this, he was assured. The slow pad of his footfalls carry him onward, his eyes see only the ruined city—seaweed and sand where they shouldn't be—vacant homes...[break][break]

Slowly stumbling forward, Adrian may have directed the odd refugee towards safehaven—but his eyes stay low to the ground. He does not wish to be seen as he is. And by that happenstance, he finds something strange sticking out against the ground. ...A plate of some kind, or tablet.[break][break]

It bears remarkable resemblance to one he's held before. Picking it up and turning it over in his hands, Adrian finds that there is no scripture upon it—and its color is yet to be determined. He stows it away and continues pacing forward, assisting where he can—but remains muted.[break][break]

Hours pass. Eventually, the only work left for them is left to professional care—and he is able to take a moment for himself and decompress.[break][break]

...I never really expected it to go so far, Adrian thought to himself as he stared across Sootopolis, at the ruined crater wall that spilled over with ocean brine, and the drenched city proper with all its ruined infrastructure. He couldn't recognize the city anymore beneath the seaweed and the rubble—the casualty of Team Rocket's war...[break][break]

It hadn't quite been twelve hours since the battling quieted down, and the League ordered the withdrawal of most of its forces. Some accomodations were made to help speed up Sootopolis' repair—but it was a city whose rich history was now forever marred by this conflict.[break][break]

Was he on the right side of history?[break][break]

Pulling out his oldest pokeball, Adrian could feel the unease settling within his palm; he had neglected her in this, allowed her to worry all alone. He could only feel sorry for Howitzer—but he would not risk her for Team Rocket's 'glory'...[break][break]

Not after all he'd given to have her back.[break][break]

With a flash Howitzer's dense fur coat appears beside him, as he slumps against the side of a haggard tree, resting upon a higher terrace within Sootopolis' southern districts. "Hey, girl."[break][break]

"I know, I know..." He sounds exasperated, reaching out to her—trying to console himself.[break][break]

Furor is rocked with another blow, forced back yet again. This time his Gyarados stayed down, growing an aversion to the pain. It was only natural—his jaw set, clenching his teeth.[break][break]

TCH. Sometimes the wall didn't budge.[break][break]

Furor had done well enough—but he hoped now that Regice and Howard could handle the rest.[break][break]

If they forced themselves much further, they stood to risk everything they hoped to achieve.[break][break]

Adrian watches with curiosity. The patterns on the Regirock's face glowed spontaneously as individual nodes—accompanied by a strange tonal sound. This was new for Adrian. It was not difficult to guess, based on the exchange Regice returned, that it was... a form of communication?[break][break]

What the fuck could they be saying?[break][break]

There is a sudden disconnect—as though Regirock had grown weary of their presence—and smashed its way through the bedrock. Behind it the tunnel collapsed, causing the trail it blazed to vanish behind it. It was Howard who reacted first.[break][break]

He raised a hand, hoping to calm them.[break][break]

"Howard, it's alright," he seemed wary of their temper—few could stomach their own failures with any amount of grace.[break][break]

In defense of their failed efforts, they hadn't the time or preparation one would hope for. They had been remarkably lucky, the two of them—but Howard wouldn't see it that way...[break][break]

Perhaps Adrian had held him back.[break][break]

...He wouldn't dwell on that.[break][break]

"It ambushed us—you will have your chance," he tried to reassure them, though he knew full well Howard had already made himself deaf to his consoling words. "Soon."[break][break]

But they needed to make camp and tend to their wounds. Retrieving Furor within its pokeball as it regressed from its evolved state, Adrian went to gather the satchel that he'd shrugged off during the commotion, dusting himself off.

Though his call reaches Furor, whether by sound or emotion, the creature is well out of reach—the tailwinds have died down, and the waters only grew more turbulent as time passed. He was on his own for now, atop this strange tree...[break][break]

Adrian can see now that the Dyna Tree has become the fixation of many from both sides of the conflict as they scramble to find dry land. Those among Team Rocket are easy to identify by their uniforms—making the rest stand out like cannon fodder.

Brandishing their steel and their iron, they hack at the tree clumsily—desperate to bring it down. He might've shrugged it off, but the Mega Mawile makes a rather daring attempt on the tree after rising high above its canopy...[break][break]

There was no time to spare, but he was seemingly powerless without Gyarados. Teeth clenching, he feels a rising, burning sensation fill his throat—like that of anaerobic glycolysis. But it is so much more than that, he realizes, as the hitch in his breath spits fire. "...TCH." ...Eh?[break][break]

His sync stone shone with a brilliant incandescence as his lungs inhaled, brimming with infinity energy before reaching capacity, allowing Adrian to exhale a plume of ash and fire and smoke ahead the Mawile's path:[break][break]FLAMETHROWER!

It was never going to be enough to stop the Mawile—but it may have burned away at its resolve, as it crash landed into the tree. It was what little he could muster in the moment.[break][break]

He does nothing of the trainer. Let them toil away at a useless prize; a piece of the tree's bark was not something he cared for saving...[break][break]

Besides—something far more pressing loomed.[break][break]

In the aftermath of Paxton's attack, had approached the Dyna Tree. She hoped to rally the League against the Dyna Tree once more, and in the dwindling state of his Sygna Suit, he felt helpless to defend against them.[break][break]
