He doesn't quite shout it but it takes a little extra 'umph' for his voice to reach her from the story below. Watching her hoist self on the railing screams malpractice and Fernando regrets going through with this. He should've just snatched her out of the doorway by force. But it's too late to do anything.

"Where are your wings?"

He wants to seem them fully realized before she makes an attempt. Even if she doesn't need them there's the psychological comfort that comes with knowing there's something visible and tangible.

The thunder of her heartbeat drowns out his answer - or she chooses to ignore it. Regardless, she takes a deep breath, several, really, as she teeters on the narrow metal of the balcony fencing. It's sturdy beneath her feet and she balances herself slowly, carefully. Although she seems precariously placed, for the most part she is secure.[break][break]

Fernando's voice draws her attention down to the ground as he asks about her wings. As if on command, the burn holes in the back of her shirt bloom and expand, fraying the fabric away to expose bare skin and blackened fabric remains. Her wings gradually grow, spreading to meet her fingertips and bathing his patio with their warm glow.[break][break]

She shifts her weight and her wings arch in preparation, quivering in anticipation. She's sweating, shivering, balling her fingers into fists.[break][break]

And then she steps off and wind whips at her face as the ground comes surging up to meet her. But she doesn't ever hit the ground because her body moves with unrealized muscle memory, her wings gathering air beneath their fiery tendrils. They carry her weight without exerting too much effort - likely numbed by the alcohol in her system. [break][break]

Stormy gasps as if she's been holding her breath, feet dangling as she focuses on the rhythmic wing-beats keeping her afloat just a few feet above Fernando. She had cut it close to plummeting to the ground, but she had had faith Fernando's Kecleon would catch her - probably.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]Against all expectations, Stormy exceeds in a marvelous display of her powers. Unable to do more than observer, Fernando's left to analyze the structure of her wings. They lack the fibers of flesh but the way they eclipse her back and arms resemble some form of anatomy. He'll have to look into it further. That in itself could be the basis of showing Lars how to do the same with his own ice.

Fernando's Kecleon merely watches, mouth open in awe as a mere human displays something it would expect from another Pokemon. His own expression is much more muted, unimpressive on the surface but pleasantly surprised deep down underneath. He shuffled himself to stand right underneath her, still wary that should could very well fall. Considering the size discrepancy between them, he's her best bet.

She is the physical, human representation of the term coined to describe the offensive move 'fiery wings'. Similar in likeness to the flames edging Moltres' wings, her own unfurl from her shoulder blades to carry her. She is not perfect in her execution by any means, her last-minute push to use her wings representation enough.[break][break]

But there is a strain in the way her body struggles to keep her in the air. She is using muscles never before used to lift the entirety of her weight. She finds herself panting as she loses traction in the air. Her mind is cloudy and fear roots itself at the forefront of her thought. She had never really been the biggest fan of heights, it had been born out of necessity to overcome that fear. She was at ease now with the reliable wings of her Charizard beneath her. But now? Now all she had was herself and the poor Kecleon waiting to catch her if she fell.[break][break]

"Fernando."[break][break]

It is only now that she seems to come to terms with the stupidity of her actions, the reckless abandon she had tossed aside in favor of proving something to him, or had it been to herself? In a matter of months, it appears that Fernando had become a beacon of strength for her, a source of confidence. She had jumped because she knew he would be there to catch her, whether he wanted to or not. [break][break]

"I think I'm falling." [break][break]

And she hadn't been until she'd said she was. And she definitely wasn't falling toward the Kecleon, unfortunately. Her wings instinctively billow to catch her at the last moment as she slams to the ground toward whatever mess of arms and body and Pokemon interference she was racing into. The moment she moves to break her fall by coiling around Fernando or the Kecleon, her wings disappear into wisps of smoke. Her own body temperature has decreased dramatically from the effort.[break][break]

He aims for her upper thighs knowing that her weight and gravity will push her further than that. Unfortunately, the last minute turn causes her trajectory to change and they’re sent tumbling.

“Fuck.”

Fernando’s knock back on his ass, carrying the weight of her fall as well as herself, while his Kecleon comes over to pat him on the shoulders.

She goes down in a blaze of glory -- or a smokey, out of breath one.[break][break]

Fernando's hands make the attempt to slow her fall, but her sudden change in direction and the momentum she has on her path prevents him from catching her with ease. Instead, fingers pinch skin and she collides with him roughly and they're both sent to the ground in a tangle of limbs as they skid to a halt. It seems, however, that Fernando has broken the majority of her fall. Stormy leans back, dazed.[break][break]

"I'm so sorry-- are you okay?"[break][break]

Her attention momentarily slides to the Kecleon patting his shoulders, and she instinctively brushes soot from his cheek. It appears that her clothes were not entirely fire-proof and she is smeared with dirt, sweat and ash. Her hand lingers longer than anticipated as she searches his face for expression.[break][break]

"Not bad for a first try, right?"[break][break]

He’s too busy trying to brush off the scratches on his palms to protest her touch, shaking his head until they make eye contact. “It could use some work,” he answers nonchalantly, “don’t you dare try this for real until you can control it.”

The damage done to her clothes are evident and Fernando makes a note to address that as well.

There is a subtle stir in her belly when they make eye contact, a moment of quiet awe, maybe. It encourages her to remain quiet while he assumes his typical, nonchalant approach. Her hand lowers from his face awkwardly and instead bumps one of his hands while he brushes gravel out of his scratches. [break][break]
"I'll just make sure to look for you if I'm going to fall."[break][break]

Her lips twitch into a satisfied smirk that is quickly replaced with surprise as he turns the question back on her. It brings warmth to her cheeks that is only further fueled by the whiskey in her belly. She sticks a finger in a burn hole through her shirt, tugging at it.[break][break]

His aversion to her joking matches like calm water to a raging fire. They're opposites and it's his job to shoot down any approach she makes. It's a dynamic that he stomachs with few but Stormy's literally earned her right through titles and prestige. "You should work on that."

He doesn't flounder for as long as she does, picking himself up and brushing off the dirt from the back of his pants. He can feel the fabric scratched but pays it no mind. "And pay some mind to not jump from a second story when training."

She winks, shifting away from him as he moves to stand. The moment of tension between them - likely one-sided given how easily Fernando shirks her, is released momentarily as they part ways. Her attention shifts to the scratches on his pants and the way his palms are scuffed.[break][break]

Her own attire is far worse for wear. Exposed skin peeks behind frayed thread and open tears and burns. She looks mottled and messy, as usual.[break][break]

"Should it be three stories? Go high or go home?"[break][break]

Stormy brushes dirt from her own pants, fingers catching in burn holes along the way.[break][break]

"I could use another drink, how about you?"[break][break]

It's a slow burn of an irritation but he bites his tongue, watching as she passes him by. "Tch." And, dutifully, he follows after, closing the door behind him as they re-enter his apartment.

"You think Anderson can do the same thing?"

Birds of a feather flock together. Considering Laurence Anderson Legendary Pokemon, it only makes sense they share somewhat similar abilities. But then again, their own issues in controlling their power seem to be the opposite. Fernando ponders the circumstances of their gift while waiting for Stormy to serve him a glass.

It's unclear whether Fernando can detect her sarcasm. Her tone is thick with jest and yet he scoffs, encouraging her to glance at him for a long moment. Inebriation softens her expression and allows her to watch him with distinct, relaxed curiosity, but she ultimately does not say anything else as they enter his apartment. The soft click of his front door closing is relieving, and her shoulders sag, paired with a quiet exhale.[break][break]

The woman tucks hair behind her ear as she turns to face Fernando - temporarily, mind you, she has other goals on her mind - but long enough to offer him a puzzled expression.[break][break]

"No idea. I didn't even know he was an avatar - we don't talk much."[break][break]

She retucks hair as she leans over to pour them both a second glass. Her fingers curl around both glasses and she offers one to Fernando, meeting his gaze only for a moment before she sips at her drink. It is impossibly warm against her lips and she curls her fingers around the glass like it may be the only thing giving her enough warmth.[break][break]

"It would be useful if he could."[break][break]

Fernando thanks her with a small nod as the glass passes hands. He lets it swirl against the rim while shooting off his own observations. “I heard he came to visit you when you were in the hospital.” Their mutual meeting never came to fruition due to Alexander’s interference but it goes without saying that Fernando keeps tabs on even the slightest of details. At least he used to — things were easier to manage, smaller in scale, when the world revolved around one upping another.

“That and ranger duties.”

Fernando ponders her position and considers her other ‘hats’. Although Fernando disapproves of sharing his surname, he can’t help but recognize her affinity for taking after the Silphs and dipping her hand into everything that she can. It’s one of the few things he admires. Not everyone can pull it off so tactfully. Speaking of which—

“Although he doesn’t seem like much, for a Head Ranger anyway.”

Stormy glances over the rim of her glass, her gaze reserved and quiet, musing over his question. He's fishing, but it may very well be the first time he ever has. This may be the most he's ever spoken to her. She takes the bait without realizing it, allowing him to reel her in and talk.[break][break]

"He didn't stay - Alexander was there and his jealousy outweighed his rational thought."[break][break]

He had been in love with her, desperately. He had been so caught up in a dream that he hadn't been willing to compromise to maintain their friendship. He hadn't wanted friendship.[break][break]

She takes another sip, drawing her tongue across her top lip slowly as she gazes into the depth of her glass. Her fingers drum against the side once, twice, before she lowers it.[break][break]
