Yukina and Ruslan’s appeal began a little jauntier this time around. The lights weren’t dimmer or turned off completely. Instead, the stage is lit up in a warm glow, resembling the soft glow of a bonfire almost. He’d thought about cutting out the dance form the routine altogether just to prevent any accidents or falls, but with the entire round basically relying on this it was either…well this…or, well, he wouldn’t think on that. [break][break]

It's a simple enough dance to perform. And even with dimmed light, Lana still can’t full see the crowd. On Yukina’s cue he swallowed his nerves and stepped behind her, mirroring her moves to the dance. As she began to dance, bobbing to the beat and clapping every so often, Ruslan once again took the role of narrator. “R-Rumors on the origins of the Yukionna vary. Some believe she was an innocent woman, traveling home through the mountains to visit her ancestor’s home.” [break][break]

The lights of the bright bonfire began to flicker and darken, casting larger and larger shadows. “However…a turn of the weather, perhaps a fickle god, interrupted her trip.” The lights began to flicker more aggressively as if imitating a weak fire in the wind. As it it did, a small chunk of ice dropped onto the stage. Then another. And another. As it did, the temperature dropped colder and colder. The cheerful festival music slowed and warped. And as it did, so did Yukina’s and Ruslan’s movements until the music slowed to a halt, and the pair stood on stage as if frozen while HAIL cascaded down. [break][break][break]

It was a good thing Jynx was naturally so good at dancing, according to its Pokedex entries. What was dance, after all, if it wasn't the act of A. wearing clothes and B. moving your canonically human feet to the music?

...There was no music for Oona's routine, weirdly enough. You didn't need music to dance, though. You just needed culture.

"UAAAGHHH!"

Thud. Thud. She stomped.

Adopting a wide-legged stance, the velvet canvas of her dress stretched like a linen tablecloth between her knees, Oona half-crouched in the center of the stage. A wide-eyed and frenzied expression transformed her beautiful Jynx face as something (a tongue?!) flickered like fire at the edge of her lips, warning her enemies of her intent to kill.

Her arms rose up at sharp, aggressive angles. "UUU Ra ra ra ra ra..." she began to chant in a low and guttural tone from somewhere deep in her chestplate. Her arms snapped from side to side like a human action figure, only twice as threatening and gorgeous.

Jynx continued to stamp in a slow, threatening rhythm, punctuating the beat of words and stomps with meaty slaps of her hands against her hips.

Smack! Smack!

"And that's a traditional Draconid Haka Dance from Jynx," came the smooth voice of Chryssa (allegedly) over the intercom, "With a simply stunning Mean Look, too! Why, if I were a rival tribe member, I don't know whether I'd be more terrified or aroused!"

first round of appeals. kyle doesn't sweat a bit, for it was cold being near his beautiful pokemon.

the following beautiful acts may have been difficult to follow up on, but that doesn't stop the beautiful performers from performing their main goal. with the beautiful power of friendship, kyle and his beautiful, young, male alolan ninetales that he caught from a swarm near beautiful fortree like three years before.

the beautiful ninetales puffed up as he faces the beautiful audience. there already had been two instances of contestants changing the beautiful weather to suit their beautiful stages, but they wouldn't be the last.

condensation overhead forms heavily and transforms from clear skies, to dark clouds, and eventually a beautiful shower of hail. each block of ice drops on to the contest floor and manages to add a beat to the solemn song as the ninetales performs.

the vulpine sways in accordance to the beautiful music, its beautiful beats snappy, energetic and elegant. each sway of the hip goes with the flow of the beautiful salsa music, and alongside each action, so does the sway of all nine beautiful tails, which constitutes as the pokemon's dress in this case.

kyle dances the salsa alongside his pokemon because he can.

What's more is they capitalize on the theme for the round, which garners the attention of the judges. "It's like the morning dew on the last day of spring; it promises so much, using so little..."

One cannot help but feel the pressure when their delusions get the better of them; perhaps Ruslan felt their format emulated others too closely, or suffered from a sudden case of imposter syndrome, but the contestant and their pokemon fumbled through their perfomance and were not able to demonstrate their appeal to the audience in the round. ~~I'm so sorry.~~

Mayhap the pressure of living up to a real legend is too much for poor Swablu as Georgette does their best to coax it into their rehearsed routine. The judges do not fail to notice this, however it is the audience who remains more sympathetic, a reverberating awwwwww rolling through the crowd when they realize the poor thing is flustered.

August & Fish' performance, which might have otherwise gone down as unremarkable, is uplifted by the sudden hit-or-miss nature of other contestants. Dominating the attention with an explosive finish, their Growlithe garners the most attention with its fiery display, scattering cinders like fireflies into the mesmerized crowd. "Simply radiant—the nostalgia is... overwhelming..."

Ninetales renders a reprisal in the form of riveting dance ~~while Kyle does a solo salsa because he can~~ and it is a hit with the audience, and while it does not peak their excitement like the rest, it manages to expose certain insecurities and lacking discipline in others that the judges do not fail to take note of.

It would be unbecoming of him not to support every contestant to the end, especially when they'd given such impassioned performances and dedicated themselves to this event.[break][break]

TWO-STEP: The theme of the last TWO (2) ROUNDS was to perform a captivating DANCE routine for the audience; this is meant to be taken figuratively, as well as asking you to literally incorporate a move that has "Dance" in the name (many of them happen to fall into the BEAUTY category, conveniently.) You only need to use a Dance move ONCE during the period to qualify for the bonus that comes at the end of the round, so don't feel obligated to use a Dance move in each of the two rounds. Maybe see if there are any COMBO moves available to you, or consider another move that might help thin out the competition if necessary. Note that there is NOT a penalty for foregoing the use of a Dance move, however it may hurt your competitive standing. Take this into consideration![break][break]

After the scores are announced, after all the ice is cleared off the stage, after a moment passes, all the lights suddenly fade away and the concert hall turns to complete darkness.

The audience exclaims in shock and surprise, but it’s soon that they’re greeted by the now easily-recognizable sound of Mars’ voice over the speakers. Calm, steady, and confident as ever:

”Darkness may just be the greatest thief to ever exist, for it can blind us to the most dazzling sights there is, but remember: even in darkness, true beauty will always persist.”

Upbeat drumming follows his words, and once the music begins, sparks break through the pitch black emptiness that fills the hall. Shimmering, shining, luminous; the Milotic appears, her body glowing in gold, and as if to perfect match the beat of the music, it's in the air that she begins to draw circles…

”Erato! Let’s face the darkness and restore light, because even if light may fade, its beauty has no equal!”

Round and round the Milotic goes, and as she does, those with keen eyes among the audience and judges would notice the specks of light that seem to be shed by her MARVEL SCALES, all of them beginning to gather at the very centre of the circle she forms.

The loud beating of drums gives way to a moment of peace carried upon light strings, and just as harmonious notes reach the ears of all those who watch the quite literal light show, the gathering specks take the shape of a bright WEATHER BALL behind which Erato disappears.

The sphere glows, floating in the darkness as if a miniature star, and when the music reaches a rising crescendo, it explodes, all light returning to the hall that very second.
[break][break]
Erato watches the audience and the judges, her body still surrounded by golden light, and slowly, she descends upon the stage where her trainer awaits.
[break][break]

The glow of her scales fades soon as well, just as drums mark the end of her performance for this round, and with that, Mars takes a closing bow.

Unfortunately for Yukina, she hadn’t exactly been able to execute like in practice. He wasn’t sure if it was the nerves finally settling in or staring too intently at the judges, but she’d fumble. They regrouped behind the curtain, with Ruslan trying to calm his girl down as he lightly fanned her wile other contestants went their turns. “Ready?” he asked, smiling gently at the Froslass. She’d wanted this way more than him, and he’d do his best to at least make it enjoyable for her. [break][break]

The pair got into position once more. When the lights returned it was no longer the warm orange of the previous simulated bonfire, but something eerily blue. The same distorted music played, just barely above the sound of fierce winds. Yukina acted out the yukionna’s possible fate. Ruslan’s voice cut above it, clear despite the bit of stutter he couldn’t shake. He made a mental note that perhaps for the next contest go around, he would lip sync to parts like this. [break][break]

“A-A clear sky gave way to rolling clouds. A silent night b-broken by h-howling winds.” To illustrate his point the Froslass’ dance moves became even more sluggish, and at time she seemed to bumble forward as if stumbling around. The lights began to dim as she moved closer to the edge of the stage, wisps of cold air come out of her mouth in struggled puffs. They glittered under the colored spotlights. “Over t-time, the mountain overtook her, a-and the cold consumed her.” Cue the pokemon slowly floating to the stage as if struggling not to fall asleep. By now, clothes of ice sparkled as thick and thicker clouds escaped her mouth. She went still. “Her beauty, h-her life had faded, taken by uncaring gods.” [break][break] [break]

The lights receded, leaving the stage in almost total darkness except for the Froslass. The music had long since stopped leaving only the ambience of wind. Then the sudden, harsh beat of a drum hit. Once. A last heartbeat. FROST BREATH began to once more leak out of her mouth in soft tendrils as she slowly got up. “Her humanity gone; she came back as something d-different. But so much more dazzling than before.” Yukina’s eyes flashed as she unhinged her jaw, letting loose a thick cloud of FROST BREATH. It seemed to sink to the ground, spreading through the floor and chilling the audience’s feet.

The traditional Draconid Haka which had so unnerved their fellow competitors was just a pregame for their actual dance performance, which was going to be much more normal and much less disturbing. While the initial judging came in, Oona the Timid Jynx conspired backstage with unknown individuals before returning to the spotlight.

When the lights fell, however, they didn't shine on Jynx.

It was chryssa glasgow , at last, sitting perfectly still in a plain wooden chair in the center of the darkened stage. She wore a simple, white cotton shift, which would remain eerily still throughout the rest of the performance despite vigorous Jynx-dancing all around her. It seemed frozen in time, still as the lashes on her unblinking, doll-like eyes.

Enter Oona from center stage, parting the curtain like a leg through a slit in a red dress. She began to turn as she coasted towards the unmoving Chryssa, her skirt flaring out like a blooming red rose with a long-haired blonde Jynx seedpod. The pirouette seemed to stretch on forever, accompanied only by the sound of a lonely cowbell jingling somewhere off stage.

She reached Chryssa and leaned over the motionless maiden, pink-and-yellow locks falling down around her face. Her impressive chest inflated and she breathed in, frosty vapor curling from her lips. No, not from-- towards.

Chryssa's face blurred like shifting sands as the Jynx seemed to take something from her, first in a stream and then in a rushing river. Oona leaned back again. The strange effect vanished. The mannequin's face was unchanging as the Jynx turned, providing the audience a view of her shapely backside, and retreated several steps before turning around again snappily for dramatic effect.

Then she sang.

She sang with the voice of a young girl, high and clear as the wind through a glass bottle. It was not the voice of a Jynx-- it felt wrong, pilfered, stolen from something innocent and pure. It ground through stereo speakers with the timbre of a $2 plastic recorder, reverberating eerily through the air like a swedish maiden calling for cattle on a foggy morning.

...Let's not forget about the dancing, too. Big hip movements. Wild tosses of her head. It did not at all match the lilting tune that continued to chime hauntingly through the Contest Hall-- the song of her young mistress, spirited away from the mortal world, lost to the unknown.

Watching ruslan skye freeze on stage sent a shiver of sympathy down August's spine. He sent his friend what he hoped was a reassuring smile and thumbs-up then gestured for him to shake it off. This was no time to falter under pressure, however. He steeled himself as he could feel the tangible, growing excitement emanating from the crowd.

The lights shut off. August let the darkness settle oppressively over the stage and then spoke, filling his words with as much emotion as he could.

"We are all born with a small spark."

He began to play a soft and serious melody on his violin. Fish stood center stage and began drawing in power, small flames flicked from his snout creating just enough dancing orange light to illuminate the pokemon.

"A spark of love, of joy, of desire, of passion. And this world tries to snuff it out."

The flames originating from Fish began to grow in size. The growlithe stalked forward and swayed his fire-filled mouth over the front row audience.

"But- hold it close to your heart, shield it with everything you've got," August nearly stuttered as he thought of his parents' looks of disappointment, of the endless days of being told he was useless, worthless, wrong... And then he thought of Felix Gallagher and of Finley Black and of his new friend, "Because one day it will grow into a flame, then a fire, then a blaze. We are living proof." He played a sudden crescendo, cueing Fish to leap up in a twirl.

Fish finally released the built up energy into a massive ball of swirling fire pointed directly upwards. It exploded in a tremendous show of power and sparks once again rained down on the audience.

This time, there's nothing left upon the stage to bolster their performance. No matter! Luka is sure that together, she and her Star-Sent beauty can weave a tale that will thoroughly enchant the audience.[break][break]
The music that announces their return to the stage is bright and lively, the soft trill of flutes reminiscent of birdsong and Butterfree wings on a soft spring breeze. Despite Clefable's stature, the fairy moves across the stage with all the grace of a prima ballerina, her pointed toes barely touching the floor as she dances weightlessly to the center. A soft jeté into a plié, and a pirouette centers her, all performed flawlessly en pointe.[break][break]

"Just as she was beloved by the moon, the Princess found a devoted admirer in the sun as well. Enthralled by her beauty as she danced underneath it's light, the sun shone twice as brightly. So bright and brilliant was the sun, that it chased away the bitter cold of winter, and gave birth to the first blooms of spring."[break][break]
Still standing center stage, Cupcake once again raises her arms. A corona of rainbow light appears, as though she's plucked the previous rainbow she created right out of the sky. With a chiming cry she lets it float into the air, where it radiates a gentle warmth upon the audience. Luka can hear several soft sighs emanating from the crowd as they too bask underneath the light.[break][break]

"The Princess then payed homage to her dear new friend, blessing the sun with a dance. In doing so, she caught the attention of nature's bounty, which showered her with gifts from the Earth."[break][break]
The soft tulle around Cupcake's waist twirls elegantly along with her as she resumes her dance. It begins as mystically delicate as the music; an allégro performed underneath soft sunlight. An arabesque en pointe, a battu jeté, compound steps that lead her in a circle around the stage. And as she dances, her fingers waggle subtly. From the rafters, petals of dainty pink begin to fall, sparkling against the sunlight and floating gracefully around Clefable and into the audience, where they settle like a rosé snowfall.[break][break]

[break][break]The music once again crescendos, and Cupcake concludes her dance with a circle of piqué turns, increasing her speed until she's naught but a whirl of pink and shimmering tulle. With a flourish, she comes to a stop right at the center of the stage, and bows low for the cheering crowd.

Dance of the Phoenix

It seems despite his shaky performance in the previous round, Etienne the Swablu isn't quite done with his cosplay as Ho-Oh.

With a determined look on his scarlet and ivory painted face, the Swablu glides in from the rafters, his wings trailing dazzling streamers of gold shedding prismatic glitter with every fluttered movement. As the Swablu hovers at the center of the stage in mid-air, the ground beneath him shimmers and shifts like a hazy mirage; the temperature rises noticeably and within the warmed currents of air swirl the prismatic glitter like a fire whirl.

A masterful stroke of his cloudy wings sends the glitter resembling an inferno, a HEAT WAVE, to spread out from the stage; as if cinders from a flame, scintillating wave of heated air bursts over the audience. The brilliant motes of colour catch the stage lights as the glitter falls in a grandiose illusion of an all-consuming flame.

Such marvelous performances from everyone. The crowd loved Sirius’s last performance, much to the joy of both trainer and Pokemon. Jubilant and eager for another round, the dynamic duo of Lux and Sirius waste no time in performing their next big move! [break][break]
It’s not often these two get a competitive edge, but there’s a first everything, and a new dawn is upon the cosmic duo. Lux winks at the audience, glittery ribbon twirler in hand as he tosses it over to his Meowstic.[break][break]
“I would say simple is best, don’t you agree? Show them what you’re made of, mon chéri!”[break][break]
With no more direction needed Meowstic falls into a natural-ballet style of dance. The navy-blue ribbon twirler sparkles in the stage light and so does Meowstic’s marvelous sailor-moon styled attire. Like a star itself. One step, two step, four, all while twirling the ribbon teaser in perfect succession..[break][break]
Meowstic continues this impressive display of balance and power, transitions to an exceptionally long pirouette. Dancer and ribbon become one, a hurricane of beauty incarnate. In the midst of this performance Meowstic then stops like a music-player winding on pause, he cocks his head, looking straight at the audience, his eyes glowing a bright, mystical aquamarine. Even the contestant Pokemon in the back could feel the drastic change of atmosphere.[break][break]
Though intimidating, it’s downright hypnotizing as well.. A gaze that simply screams ‘look at me!’ but also ‘don’t you DARE upstage me!’[break][break]
Though it doesn’t last for long as Meowstic finishes his beautiful dance like a true professional ballerina, bowing at the end while letting out a happy trill.[break][break]

since people are talking, kyle assumes he should be talking a lot too. he eyes the previous contestants and decides that he must be doing too, or else he risks being the odd one out.

music stops and the beat changes. "attaining one's dream requires a stern will and unfailing determination," kyle ominously starts with.

the ninetales stops being silly and gets serious. the sudden shift was as eerie as it can be. the chill of the previous cold now shares its intensity with the pokemon's battle ready stare.

"The silent voice within one's heart whispers the most profound wisdom."

diamond dust scatter from the ninetales' location. cold winds spread outwards, air as thick as it can be during heavy snowstorms. the entire stage is filled with chills despite being on hoenn.

temperature drops. amid the snowstorm, the sheer cold of the area spreads until everything within sight is filled with white. the winds' direction force the object of attention of the audience to the eye of the storm: the ninetales.

ice starts to pop up from everywhere. it's the opposite of beauty, really, for such savage display of power to come into play. the contrast that follows afterwards makes up for it, however.

"Celebrate life's grandeur... Its brilliance... its magnificence..."

the ninetales then continues its dance. it makes the ravaged stage its podium, accenting the pokemon's natural charms with its preferred environment.

After the curtains close on the last contestant, Adrian and the judges are momentarily speechless. What to say? Many are accustomed to trends in the performances, but this year's contest promises much less consistency. It's a wild and bumpy ride that leaves them sitting on the edges of their seats, wondering if their idolized participant can yet pull through despite the odds that are stacking against them...![break][break]

"The word is in: luka chêne and Clefable have stolen a narrow lead, leaving Martín del Mar and August Gallagher just behind them in points. But don't jump to conclusions—it's still anyone's contest!" He mouthed the words, but as always, there were those who resigned themselves to failure before even beginning. Adrian wondered how they would carry on going forward, knowing they had it within them to shake the contest from the ground up were they so inclined.[break][break]

THE BEST FOR LAST: As you should have already read in the sign-ups, I reserved the right to award BONUS APPEAL based on one's PRESENTATION, which boiled down to whether they used resources well (templates, songs, images, format, etc.) to deliver an awesome experience for me, the Judge. I limited it to one point per round and gave some away on a very generous basis. THAT CHANGES NOW! I will now be increasingly more critical of how they are used and not simply use their mere presence as a basis for awarding the points, and I will be awarding more of them for every facet of a post. This is extremely ARBITRARY but is meant to allow the chance for participants to breakthrough the mechanical learning curve with purely their skills as a forum roleplayer! I may also award certain players who hit all criteria with a special STAMP that will hopefully be able to used as a TIEBREAKER in that event![break]

Due to the nature of these contests generating more APPEAL POINTS than can usually be measured on the built-in meter, the actual meter will represent TWO (2) POINTS per heart, meaning you will need to earn two whole points for a heart meter to be lit up. Even though they've pulled ahead, this is no time to let their guard down. The tides might turn at any moment, and Luka knows that she and Clefable need to be on top of their game. But as the next round begins, Cupcake turns to her and flashes a wide, reassuring smile. Luka's heart melts, and she nods in understanding. No matter how things turn out, all that matters is that they've done their best together.[break][break]

A similarly whimsical music announces the star-sent's return to the stage. She floats gracefully upon it as the crowd waits with baited breath, eager to see what the pair has in store next.[break][break]

"Having befriended the Sun and the Earth, the Moon Princess soon turned to the creatures that walked upon verdant fields. She blessed everyone she met with her ethereal beauty, and in turn they gave her the greatest gift of all: friendship. Long gone were her lonely days upon the moon, wishing desperately on stars."[break][break]

Cupcake clasps her hands together, her expression sincerely touched. Luka continues. "Allow your humble narrator to interject. For there is little happiness that compare to the company of a beloved friend, and I'm so thankful she's touched my life. And together, we will show you that love is the most beautiful thing in the world!"[break][break]

Luka steps gracefully into the spotlight, the first time she's tried to share it with her beloved Pokemon. She greets Clefable with a gracious curtsey, which is returned with a flourish. And together, they sing.[break][break]

Cupcake's flute-like intonation soars beautifully over the crowd, a gentle trill that takes the place of the instrumentals in their background. Luka provides the words, her soft voice singing of the world the Moon Princess inhabits, la vie en rose.[break][break]

Together, they are somehow both gentle and vivacious, a beautiful combination made manifest as Cupcake twirls her hands, painting visions of their song in brilliant light. Colorful lines create staffs that swirl around them, and glowing musical notes float from their combined voices into the audiences. It's a dazzling display of light and sound, ending on a high vibrato as the notes all around them burst into showers of twinkling stars.

The next spectacular had to blow them away. Although, this would prove to be quite the challenging prompt indeed. Given his previous past filled with nothing but uncomfortable silence, to use his voice in such a way is clearly out of his comfort zone. However Sirius was his guiding star, and would pave the way for sure, just as he always had. A true testament of their tight-knit bond.[break][break]
Lux clears his throat, perfectly and professionally enunciated for all to hear.[break][break]
“As beautiful as they are stars don’t shine, they burn. Sad as it is, they are not an eternal beauty. So, we should cherish them for as long as they are with us.”[break][break]
As the applause dies down the lighting shifts, that intensity from before all but gone and forgotten. Now, Lux purposefully inserts himself in his beloved little constellation’s spotlight, something his partner had been silently encouraging him to do for the longest time. Moon meets sun, though not a single eclipse is to be seen on this stage, for they shine together.[break][break]
Violet eyes stare into those of pure aquamarine, and they meld together, two beautiful together hues as one. In that moment, Sirius’s voice sounds out to the crowd, just the right combination of melodic and mechancolic.[break][break]
Lux’s eyes close as they sing in perfect sync to Meowstic’s tune. Soft and deep, together, their voices are a perfect soothing clash to behold. Trainer and Pokemon in perfect harmony.[break][break]
“At first sight, I felt the energy of sun rays. I saw the life inside your eyes.”[break][break]
Meowstic continues supplying calculated power to the song, twirling while his dress sparkles in the centered lighting. Together, they burn. Gradually, like a gravitational pull they dance closer to one another, skirting close but ever so far. Then, toward the song’s end where they finally meet face-to-face Lux props down on his knee, finishing the last of the chorus with every ounce of grace one could effortlessly muster.[break][break]
“So shine bright, tonight. You and I, we’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.”[break][break]
Meowstic’s round fades in with the natural decrescendo. Then, Meowswtic hops forward and nuzzles into Lux’s arms, caught in a twirling, wholesome embrace. It's unplanned, but still perfect all the same.[break][break]
