BARNABY FINCH had always been drawn to the allure of the flame.

Inherently, he was one for dichotomies. He'd lived a double life, contrasted in almost every possible way, for nearly as long as he'd been alive.

Fire, too, had been viewed in divergent ways throughout history. It was reminiscent of sins washed clean. Of hell on Earth. Divinity and perdition all in one. As powerful a tool as it was unwieldy and unpredictable.

It made sense, then, why he was currently climbing the side of an active volcano. Like a moth to a flame.

In the wake of the cataclysmic events set at Mt. Pyre, a trio of ROCKETs found themselves scaling the inclines of Mt. Chimney in search of answers. There wasn't much in the way of clues to guide their scouting mission — if anything, it was a ghost hunt.

A specral, flaming bird had been seen soaring from a rift that had opened their world to the realm of the dead. Although this spirit was only one of thousands, it's fleeting form - last seen heading toward Mt. Chimney - had left an impression on Barnaby.

MOLTRES. He had recognized the Pokémon from Stormy Silph's time as it's Avatar as well as from various artworks found in the floors above Fleur Tea Atelier. Since then, he'd even done some of his own personal research on the Legendary Bird Pokémon.

As he looked to Zev Harcourt and Girard Fraser, he hoped that knowledge would help them find answers today.

"I hope you two brought your best hiking boots. It'll be a tough climb to get to the top."

Normally, investigating the whereabouts of a random Pokémon was not the sort of activity Zev wanted to waste his time on. This particular request, however, was not an ordinary one.[break][break]

First, Bee had saved Zev's life. Though Zev had repaid the debt almost instantly, it benefited him to maintain a positive relationship with an associate willing to risk danger for his sake. Though Zev had no intention of manipulating Bee into a pawn, all people could be useful tools, and other members of Rocket were not exempt.[break][break]

Second, Zev had come to appreciate the power of Legendary Pokémon during the attack on Littleroot Town. Both his allies and his enemies possessed great power thanks to the shackling of such Pokémon, so the more of them Rocket had, the better.[break][break]

And that was how he found himself on the steep trails of Mt. Chimney, dressed in appropriate hiking gear and carrying a Rotom-enhanced tablet with a readout of the active volcano.[break][break]

"Is there any chance we can fly up there, or would we have a better chance of finding clues on the ground?" Zev asked his companions.

Girard gazed up at the looming peak of Mt. Chimney, the razor-sharp stone crowned with a ring of ominous grey clouds. It had been some time since he had found himself somewhat precariously perched on the side of a mountain in the middle of the wilderness, but the aftermath of the near-apocalypse had thrown many into situations they were not necessarily accustomed to. Active volcano or not, BARNABY FINCH had requested his help, and Girard was nothing if not loyal to his longtime friend.[break][break]
Besides, Barnaby's mission was highly intriguing. Who would turn down a chance at coming face to face with the spirit of Moltres, legendary firebird? Girard was well aware of what had transpired at Mt. Pyre, and what the implications were. He also knew what it would mean to Barnaby to find the legendary, study it secrets, perhaps resurrect it? If such a thing were even possible. His friend deserved the chance to try.[break][break]
The presence of Zev Harcourt was not something Girard had expected, but Barnaby's mission did involve a dangerous trek - who knew what obstacles they would face? Having a Rocket Beast along was probably a good idea. Girard had not had a chance to spend much time with the assassin, but the man's reputation preceded him: reliable and brutally efficient. The pawnbroker was ultimately glad for his aid; Girard knew far more about fighting than his softspoken, bespectacled demeanor let on, but Zev was obviously the expert.[break][break]
"Flight, though convenient, may not work in our favor," Girard answered evenly. "After all, the climb itself is likely part of the trial." He paused, realizing he ought to elaborate; what often seemed obvious to him was not always obvious to others. "The legendary Pokémon of our realm rarely find humanity worthy of their attention, let alone their affections. For Rayquaza to have saved the world from destruction was a rare act of mercy indeed. If we are to win over another of the powerful creatures to our side, we must show it that we are capable of traversing its chosen domain, however volatile." He scanned the bleak horizon. "And there will certainly be clues along the way."[break][break]
Darcy, Girard's Houndoom, sniffed the air expectantly. "See if you can find us the best route," Girard urged the fiery canine. He'd brought Darcy specifically because of his resistance to the heat of the volcano, as well as his keen tracking senses. The Houndoom growled softly and then began to traverse upwards, paws scraping against rock. Girard followed, curious to see where his Pokémon would take them.

"You're both right. It's easier to look for clues on the ground," Barnaby's gaze flicked to Zev Harcourt before landing back on Girard Fraser. "And who knows? Maybe the gods are watching and judging. That's what they do, after all. Doesn't hurt to show them a little grit."

Even so, Girard had the right idea in terms of having their Pokémon help with the detection of clues. Their senses were so much more heightened than the average human's, especially a canine like HOUNDOOM. It gave Barnaby the idea to release his METAGROSS - a Pokémon smarter than an actual supercomputer. It's analytic abilities were unmatched.

"Scan the environment for signs of Moltres. Feathers, disturbed terrain, things like that. Anything anomalous." Barnaby ordered, gesturing for his METAGROSS to hover just ahead of their group.

Zev glanced sidelong at Girard Fraser as the other man spoke. They were not acquainted, having met for the first time on the trek up Mt. Chimney at Bee's behest. Girard's comments on the Legendary Pokémon's attentions and affections filled Zev with disdain, but he refrained expressing any of it.[break][break]

So instead, he nodded at the consensus to travel by foot and proceeded with his companions on the trail, following the Houndoom and Metagross who led the way.[break][break]

As the group climbed, the air around them thickened, growing hotter and more humid with every few feet of their ascension. Even the tablet in Zev's hands seemed to sweat as the Rotom trilled and beeped with discomfort.[break][break]

"Get your shit together," he muttered at the Electric-type Pokémon. It flashed warnings back at him regarding the heat, the danger zone around the summit, and the steepness of the climb.

Their Pokémon led them up.[break][break]
So up they went. The crag transformed from granite slab into obsidian volcanic rock, their footing becoming all the more treacherous as they ascended. Despite staying in shape, Girard found that his breathing had become labored and he was sweating profusely. The temperature around them had risen dramatically as they'd approached the peak of the volcano.[break][break]
Darcy stopped, sniffed. His body stiffened, and he growled low in the back of his throat: a warning. Girard stilled, holding up a hand to indicate that the others should halt as well.[break][break]
"What is it?" He asked the Houndoom, tone quiet yet curious. Darcy's form shimmered slightly, as if suddenly distorted by a heat wave, the subtlest of hints that something had changed about him. Girard immediately recognized it as the activation of the Houndoom's ODOR SLEUTH.[break][break]
"He senses something nearby," Girard said to the others. "Alive or dead, I cannot tell." After all, Moltres was a spirit now. Or so they believed.

As they ascended, ash from the mouth of the volcano fell more densely upon them. Barnaby had come prepared for this; he pulled up a neck gaiter from around his throat so that it covered his nose and mouth, and lowered a pair of tinted glasses from the top of his head to his eyes.

The rest of their climb went without issue - despite the HOUNDOOM's initial interest. It turned out that the scent that had triggered him was a wayward GRIMER sulking in the heat. The stench it gave off was foul, but not out of the ordinary.

Barnaby's METAGROSS hadn't detected anything either. It made him ponder even more about the elusive deity they were tracking. Recalling what he'd witnessed before, the MOLTRES that was seen flying toward Mt. Chimney had only appeared after The Border between life and death was ripped open.

Why then? Barnaby had wondered. If it was indeed a roving spirit, why had it come here?

Perhaps his internal speculations might soon be answered. Finally, they arrived at the rim.

"Let's split up. See what you can find. Take note of anything that seems out of the ordinary."

Barnaby himself edged closer to the brim of the crater. Looking down, he could see lava oozing below - but was there anything else?

WITHOUT A PROPER AND DESIGNATED SCENT, Girard Fraser's HOUNDOOM would not necessarily be able to detect what could be spirits or energies by scent alone. However, being on Mt. Chimney is a harrowing experience—and not just for its treacherous terrain and sweltering heat. Envy nips at your thoughts and soils the droplets of sweat collecting on your skin.

Upon looking at the lava within the crater, BARNABY FINCH would not find anything explicitly... However, the lava seems more active, more aggressive. It boils, churns and gurgles loudly, causing LAVA FLOWS. Compared to previous documentation of the volcanic activity of Mt. Chimney, the volcano seems more active...

Even though it had erupted during the events of DESOLATE LAND.

While Bee and Girard walked in separate directions along the craterous edge of the volcano, Zev remained where he stood, holding his Rotom-possessed tablet with both hands. Sweat dripped down his brow and neck. He could feel it pool at his mid-back along his spine.[break][break]

The readings on the tablet were impossible. The volcano had already erupted before, information readily available from Rocket's databases. It should be in a period of relative inactivity if not dormancy.[break][break]

But according to Rotom's analysis, the churning of the lava within the mountain suggested that another eruption may be close at hand. Zev could not begin to know when.[break][break]

As he pondered the abnormal readings, his thoughts turned away from their hike and the search for Moltres. They drifted back to the fateful day of the meteoroid's scheduled impact and the clash in Littleroot Town.[break][break]

The day he'd seen Caleb Harcourt again for the first time in three years.[break][break]

Zev's knuckles turned white as his grip on the tablet tightened. Caleb had fought on the side of the League, and in that brief moment of their encounter, Zev had thought Caleb loyal to his captors. He'd believed, however wrongly, that Caleb had willingly chosen to follow someone other than his own flesh and blood.[break][break]

Raw ENVY pooled in Zev's chest the way lava pooled in the heart of a volcano.

Sweat dripping from his brow, Girard followed Darcy as the Houndoom attempted to locate any signs of life - legendary or otherwise - within or around the volcano. As he and BARNABY FINCH neared the lip of the massive crater, the high temperature was almost too much to bear. Through the haze - the air shimmering tangibly with heat - Girard tried to make out his friend's expression: could the other man sense anything? He was the one who had asked about an expedition to search for Moltres, seeming to have an affinity for the firebird...[break][break]
The ENVY hit Girard all at once, potent and unexpected. He sucked in a hot breath. Barnaby has never really seen you as anything more than a friend, a venomous voice murmured in the back of his mind. Even though you've wanted him for ages. Was that true? Girard hesitated.[break][break]
He couldn't deny that his friend was attractive. Very attractive. But for some time now, Barnaby had been in an exclusive relationship - something Girard respected, so he'd kept his flirtations to a minimum. What if that relationship ended? The ENVY gripped his heart with a fist so tight it was suffocating.[break][break]
"It's the heat," he muttered.[break][break]
Delusions brought on by extreme conditions. That was all. He crept forward, continuing to search. How much longer could they keep this up?[break][break]
If you find Moltres for him, he might choose you instead.

The heat emanating from within the crater was almost unbearable, despite the protective clothing Barnaby had worn for this exact reason. He hadn't expected the lava to be this high - outside the ordinary, according to ROCKET's records.

"Make note of this." He requested of Esprit, his ROTOM. The admin's ghost-inhabited cellphone then slipped from his pocket, snapping pictures of the surrounding landscape and the volcano below.

Suddenly, a nauseating wave of emotion bloomed in his gut and settled like a stone in his chest: unbidden ENVY taking hold, infecting his mind with negative thoughts.

You'll always be lesser in their eyes.

His efforts here - chasing literal deities through hell and high water - would be seen as a child's fantasy to them. His promotion unimpressive, his work unimportant. Nothing in comparison to the better child. The heir. The elder brother.

AGUSTIN L'OISEAU.

Barnaby's fists clenched tightly, causing his nails to press sharp indents into his palms. His expression was gloomy as he looked back to where his two ROCKET comrades were located, picking their way across the rocks.

A hand rose to engage the communication device at his ear.

"...anything to report? Besides the lava flows, there's nothing on my end."

Zev shook his head. "Nothing on my end," he said, tapping the tablet's screen to bring up a display of the readings. "It looks like the volcano is ready for another eruption any day now."[break][break]

He was not going to reveal the strange feeling of ENVY that had surfaced like bubbles in the lava. In fact, the irritation in Zev's face would have come off as annoyance at being at the peak of an active volcano. He wiped the sweat from his brow in emphasis before turning to look at Girard.[break][break]

"What about you? Did your Pokémon find anything?"

"Nothing," Girard murmured in response to Zev's inquiry, a bone-deep weariness settling over him for more reasons than just the heat. Girard eyed the Beast, wondering if he had also experienced a rush of ENVY, but the other man's expression was unreadable. Zev was a careful, private man, so Girard had little idea what he might be envious of...but that didn't mean the man was devoid of covetous desire. Everyone had secrets.[break][break]

Now that was a fascinating question he supposed a biologist might be able to answer; he had witnessed his own Pokémon fight over berries or vie for his attention, perhaps that was the extent to which they experienced feelings such as jealousy and envy.[break][break]
"Darcy has had little luck in finding anything significant," Girard sighed, the sudden and intense desire to find Moltres for Barnaby still nagging at him. "Perhaps we ought to try a different approach? Attempt to view into the volcano's crater from above? A flying Pokémon would have a better vantage point." He paused, considering. "I do not have such a Pokémon with me, however. What about you two?"

As the trio converged back together, Barnaby couldn't shake a sinking, foreboding feeling gripping at his chest. It was a roiling emotion similar to the lava bubbling just feet away. He wasn't sure if it was due to the lingering ENVIOUS thoughts or the fact that there was no sign of the legendary bird they'd come to find.

Nothing conspicuous, anyway.

"Not a bad idea, Girard. My Charizard should be able to do it."

From his pocket Barnaby withdrew a Luxury Ball and released his dark-scaled dragon.

"I'll fly above and record what I see. Be ready in case anything goes wrong."

Straddling the back of his CHARIZARD, the admin was soon airborne within a few strong wingbeats. He rose above the intense heat, gaining a view of the entire crater. As before, his ROTOM was diligent in collecting as much data as possible.
