Nomi crept forward through the underbrush, a living shadow by her side. Ahead, Zev Harcourt stalked silently onwards, leading them towards their destination: the entrance to Granite Cave. What had once been a fairly accessible, low-activity rift into the Ultra Deep Sea was now a hotbed of faction conflict. Ever since priam conrad had discovered the Seal Stone, things had begun to escalate between Rocket and the League, reminiscent of what had taken place at Littleroot and Mt. Pyre mere months ago...[break][break]
Nomi paused as the mountainside came into view, stopping to survey the landscape. She could not see anyone guarding the mouth of the cave, which seemed rather ominous. They had received reports of League operatives standing watch over the rift, but where were they?[break][break]
Inside, most likely. Lying in wait.[break][break]
Did they think them fools? She knew better than to assume Zev would march them right up to the threshold; it would be akin to announcing their presence over a loud speaker.[break][break]
"Well?" She murmured to him. "How should we proceed?"[break][break]
Though they were technically of equal rank in Rocket, Zev had many years of military experience under his belt, best suited to lead this sort of mission. She was his cargo, essentially; get her into the Ultra Deep Sea so that she could use her scientific knowledge of the dream mist to, hopefully, lead them to a stone.[break][break]
She could hold her own in a fight, however. If it came to that.

As Zev observed the entrance to Granite Cave, he rolled an object between his hands, a mysterious artifact collected from previous expeditions to Ultra Deep Sea. Called a scatterbang, it could scare away Pokémon — and possibly people — from the immediate area.[break][break]

"Teleporting is too risky, so we'll clear a way through," he replied. Then he whistled sharply. In response, a piercing caw pierced the air from above.[break][break]

Zev's shiny Corviknight flew into view and touched down next to the duo. He handed the bird the scatterbang, which she gingerly took in her beak.[break][break]

"Drop that right at the entrance," he instructed. Without objection, she took wing again, circling high above the path into the cave for a moment. Zev then released another Pokémon, his Infernape.[break][break]

Turning again to Nomi, he said, "As soon as the explosion goes off, we make a run for it. Have a Pokémon at the ready to fight anyone still defending."[break][break]

No sooner had he spoken those words that a deafening BANG filled the air, coming from the mouth of Granite Cave. Zev surged into action, not caring if Nomi was following him or not. His Infernape kept pace, loping easily beside his master.

after delivering cargo with francie myrtle , he’d been on his way out of the rift to one of the wild’s entrances, to regroup with others and help guard. he’d almost been at the threshold when the scatterbang went off.[break][break]

he ducked, and his aerodactyl was thrown off course by the surprise, nearly crashing into rocks in the cave once on the other side. perhaps even narrowly evading the rockets headed in the opposite direction.[break][break]

”shit!” he grimaced. ”turn around!”[break][break]

when they’d reoriented, they were in hot pursuit, taking no time to check in with anyone in the area. they had to act fast.[break][break]

”stop them!” he commanded.[break][break]

to the side, just before the rift, a rock slide would begin to occur, stones tumbling down in their path.[break][break]

he almost drops his phone from chilling, standing on guard, when a loud noise interrupts their moment of peace. he stands up from a stool a few feet away from the rift as he chooses a pokemon that doesn't need to rely on him for instructions.

his terrakion pops out of its ball. it stomps its feet, erecting a barrier from stone edge, rocks jutting out to protect his trainer and, subsequently, the tear in space behind them.

"that wasn't nice!"

he throws his own scatterbang back in retaliation from a stash of treasure guards were supplied with. it doesn't serve any strategic purpose, unlike the one used against them, but it eases his pettiness a bit.

Nomi leapt into action, her Marshadow coalescing out of the shadows where it had been expertly hidden. She allowed herself to be wrapped up in those same shadows, whisked forward with a burst of dark energy as Shade's PHANTOM FORCE teleported them instantly to the mouth of the cave. She immediately ducked down so as to avoid any counter projectiles coming from within.[break][break]
Which was smart, because a second scatterbang came whizzing over her head seconds after her arrival. It exploded with another loud Bang! as she flung herself forward, into the cave, covering her ears. Hopefully Zev had been able to dodge it as well.[break][break]
Two figures ahead, their features obscured slightly as Nomi's eyes adjusted to the dim lighting. These two had to be the ones defending against intruders such as herself. They looked male upon first glance, but Nomi could not be sure. She ducked to the side, throwing her small body behind a thick stalagmite before they could notice her.[break][break]
Shade hovered next to her, its glowing orange eyes fixated on their apparent adversaries. "Wait for Zev to draw them into battle," she murmured to the Marshadow. "Let them think it's only him. Then we'll hit them while they're distracted."

Zev had just stepped past the mouth of the cave when a second scatterbang went off. Covering his ears too late, he swore under his breath and looked ahead to find the item's thrower. Between a barrier of rocks, he could see a man and his Pokémon. Above them, an Aerodactyl flapped her wings.[break][break]

Infernape leaped, easily clearing the stone barricade ahead. The height of the jump was more than enough to make it to the other side, but that was not where he was headed.[break][break]

Electricity crackled around Infernape's fist as he aimed to land a THUNDER PUNCH on the Aerodactyl.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zev ran straight for the stone wall. He started to climb, boots and gloved fingers finding purchase in nooks and crannies. "Get us to the other side!" he yelled over his shoulder at Nomi, knowing her Ghost-type was capable of it.

the sounds of war were louder when cracking against cave walls. it was disorienting.[break][break]

seeing the electricity crackling around the monkey’s fist almost too late, bo could only make a snap decision to bail before his aerodactyl inevitably took the hit, crashing off into the rocks.[break][break]

he hit the ground hard, but the adrenaline was going. he rolled, got his footing, and was back up. chasing after Zev Harcourt , he pulled back to throw what was in his hand.[break][break]

across the distance that remained between them, a sticky glob sailed with speed and precision.[break][break]

he sees someone else chasing after the assailant, recognizing it as one of the ranger captains of the region. actions were perceived, and his next script basically wrote itself when he sees what was about to transpire.

he quickly eliminates the possibility of it being another pokeball, working to a conclusion the moment he disregards any other item that could have been thrown at that moment. he doubles up on the item's function as soon as it registers to him.

"off your feet!"

kyle almost feels giddy saying a voice line from a game, but it feels too appropriate given the situation.

the terrakion shakes the ground with bulldoze, dust and dirt descending from the ceiling as those on the ground would soon find themselves with unsteady footing, perhaps to hinder movement from the ground.

Zev's distorted voice echoed through the cavern as he rushed by Nomi's hiding spot, but moments after his arrival at the stone wall, a second figure ran past her. One of those League men, Nomi realized. Quickly gaining ground, he lobbed an object at Zev, though it seemed to be something different than a scatterbang as there was no subsequent explosion. Whether it connected with Zev or not, Nomi was not certain.[break][break]
"Get us over the wall," she commanded of Shade, but before the Marshadow could act, the ground began to tremble beneath Nomi's feet. She nearly lost her balance, holding tight to the stalagmite in front of her. "Change of plans," Nomi muttered as the second League man came into view. "Stop him."[break][break]
Shade darted forward, using the cave's many shadows to its advantage. When the ghost had closed on the League operative with the annoying Terrakion, its body began to grow colder until ice formed on one of its small, translucent fists. The Marshadow then sent an ICE PUNCH - not at the Terrakion or its trainer - but at the stalactites hanging from the ceiling directly above them. The rock dislodged and large chunks of granite began to rain down upon them both.

The sticky glob exploded upon impact, splashing along the rocky barricade and up Zev's legs. He instantly recognized the object and its purpose, having used it against a different group of League agents and volunteers already.[break][break]

Swearing under his breath, Zev twisted upon his precarious perch. Below him, the ground quaked. Dirt and debris fell all around him — and upon the man approaching at a run. Beneath his mask, Zev's eyes hardened.[break][break]

It was boruta maher, the Ranger Captain of Rustboro City and Zev's occasional sparring partner.[break][break]

A high-pitched whistle cut through the air, a wordless command from the Rocket Beast. His Infernape, who had landed atop the wall of stone, jumped down to his master's side and threw STEALTH ROCKS between Zev and Boruta.

he looked over to see kyle lopez, and couldn’t help the briefest smile, because that was probably the best case scenario. these guys weren’t getting away.[break][break]

kyle might not have noticed the marshadow, and may have otherwise blamed it on the ground-type move, but the eyes of a legendary pokemon are something else.

the pokemon takes action immediately, independent of its trainer, and quickly shoots down each projectile from above. multiple rocks were shot above, turning the stalactites into dust with the precision that smacks down aerial targets.

the stalactites did not crash, but it definitely finds success in wasting the pokemon's action.

"what the fuck is happening?"

hidden among the attempts to shoot down each spiked rock formation dropping from above, terrakion finds a few windows of opportunity to attempt to bring the culprit to the ground.

Of course the Terrakion - a legendary Pokémon - would be able to snipe each and every rock falling from the ceiling. With precision, it took care of the threat in less than a minute. Damn, she thought, frustrated. At least the ground had stopped trembling. With better footing, she could gain some higher ground and catch up with --[break][break]
Zev Harcourt was covered in some kind of sticky substance, trapped in place, the other League agent rushing at him despite the Beast's clever usage of STEALTH ROCKS. Nomi returned Shade to his pokeball, their initial plan foiled, then released Legion. "Help him," she sighed, pointing at Zev, her patience wearing thin. Their attempt at entering the Ultra Deep Sea wasn't working as they'd intended...perhaps they'd actually underestimated the League's forces.[break][break]
The Maushold scurried across the rocks, nimble enough to move quickly despite the impediments, until it was standing next to Zev's Infernape. With a series of encouraging squeaks, it put up a PROTECT around Nomi's allies.

The DARK PULSE bounced off the protective shield of Nomi's Maushold, the sudden appearance of the small, white rodents bringing some relief to the Rocket Beast. Still, the sticky glob prevented him from moving easily or quickly, his legs meeting strong resistance as he tried to move from the rock wall.[break][break]

They had not made any progress toward the rift since entering Granite Cave. Zev saw he and Nomi would be hard pressed to gain the advantage in those conditions. He scanned the immediate area, looking for a way to gain the upper hand.[break][break]

The Infernape did his best to defend his master. Focusing on the Aerodactyl, the primate leaped toward the aerial Pokémon, a MACH PUNCH aimed to knock it and its trainer out of the air.
