with the pokemon's focus on the front, the terrakion aims to finish them off from the back.

a sacred sword forms on its head. a large blade of light swings from the bottom up, targeting the maushold without caring if the move causes collateral damage to its friend.

kyle finally notices the ranger's pokemon perform its z-move at the infernape. he backs away closer to the rift in space as he hopes everything works out in the end.

Unfortunately, the PROTECT that had been put up around Zev and his Infernape did not actually do anything to safeguard its tiny owners. The Terrakion's SACRED SWORD came crashing down, its legendary force far too great for the little Maushold to withstand. With a series of painful squeaks, they fainted, forcing Nomi to return them to their Pokeball with another grunt of frustration.[break][break]
"This isn't working," Nomi shouted to Zev. "We need to get out of here and regroup!"[break][break]
She didn't wait around to hear his answer, instead bolting away from the wall of stone they had been attempting to clear and scrambling back towards the mouth of the cave. She was confident a Beast as experienced at Zev would be able to get himself out of his current predicament.[break][break]
The terrain wasn't exactly easy to traverse, but miraculously, Nomi managed to find her way to the outside. Panting, hands on her knees, she glared at the cave with narrowed crimson eyes. Damn, she thought. They'd have to find another way into the Ultra Deep Sea. Hopefully it wouldn't be too late to beat the League to whatever Seal Stones laid hidden within.

Infernape took the full force of the Z-move. When the dust cleared from the air, Zev saw that his Pokémon was barely hanging onto consciousness. Nomi's fainted Maushold, however, was quickly returned to the safety of its Pokéball, the victim of the Terrakion's attack.[break][break]

Nomi was right. They had to leave and approach from another angle.[break][break]

Recalling his Infernape, Zev released his Gengar and whistled a sharp command. Instantly, PHANTOM FORCE brought him and the Ghost-type to Nomi's side as she retreated.[break][break]

"We need to heal up," he told her, voice terse with annoyance. "Let's regroup with the others and work on a new plan."[break][break]

A gesture from him brought them back into the phantom plane and out of sight.

the damage taken was enough to see their masked foes fleeing—maybe. the phantom force left a feeling of uncertainty. bo looked around, but then decided, ”don’t think they’re coming back.”[break][break]

he turned towards kyle and terrakion, then, smiling.[break][break]

”i better get to where i’m headed.” and he almost introduced himself, but stopped short. why’d his name have to be maher? ”it was cool to see you guys in action.”[break][break]

with a wave, he’d soon turn to part ways with golem beside him, regrouping before returning to the rift. [break][break]

he's certain things wouldn't have gone the same had he used any other pokemon. saved only through the terrakion's instinct, kyle is convinced that maybe guard duty isn't his thing.

the rockets dismiss themselves, earning kyle a rightfully deserved sigh of relief. it was a short conflict, and they were lucky to have time on their side since they're on defense. any longer and more might respond to them, such as the ranger before him.

"t-take care," kyle manages to squeeze out of his lungs.

he really wants his replacements for guard duty to come through soon. high-action fights are too tiring, especially when he came here thinking that guard duty was supposed to be chill.
