[break][break]Julia's cry was desperate as, despite Momo and Roland's best efforts, the Mega Lucario pushed through and struck with its Bone Rush. Yet thanks to the Lucario's Burn, the attack lost its lethal edge. In fact, for a moment, it looked like Momo hadn't fainted at all. Julia's face shone with relief as he pulled himself to his paws, but it was soon clouded over by the miasma that was spreading across the battlefield.

[break][break]Momo turned to face his trainer.

[break][break]And then he attacked.

[break][break]Julia froze, eyes wide, as the Rock Tomb he'd aimed at their foes came flying toward her. Her brain screamed at her to move, but her muscles refused. Why? Why was this happening? Why did it have to be this? Why did it have to be Momo?! No, it wasn't Momo, not really, but seeing him look so coldly at her as the Rock Tomb flew at her in slow motion...

[break][break]Her vision was blocked by metallic silver. The attack meant for her, combined with another Copied Moonblast from the Lucario, brought Roland down in a sparking, stuttering mess. The world snapped back into focus. Her unexpected ally had brought out a Tyranitar at some point to block a hit from the Kabutops. This wasn't the time to be freezing up. Heck, freezing up was never a good idea, but here, it was even worse. She reached down to her Poké Ball belt, but a flash of light burst from under her hovering fingers.

[break][break]The moment Snaily formed, she let out a high, gooey roar and jumped up and down like a child throwing a Stomping Tantrum. How dare these horrible people hurt her precious trainer?! Rocks flew from the ground to strike the Lucario. She turned her angered gaze to Momo next.

[break][break]Snap out of it, you idiot! her glare seemed to say.

[break][break]"Snaily, don't!" Julia shouted. "He's being controlled! It's not Momo!"

[break][break]Snaily growled. She didn't care. She'd do whatever it took to protect her best friend.

Gavin's Pokémon would sooner die than faint. It's what they've been taught — harsh lessons by a man who'd learned the same in Kanto. Even as the Lucario suffers from its BURNS and its attempts to maintain the MEGA EVOLUTION, even as it trembles on its paws and sinks down to one knee in the aftermath of the STOMPING TANTRUM, it does not collapse. It would keep fighting, if it was ordered to, until its last breath.[break][break]

But Faolan is no sacrificial lamb to the slaughter; red light swallows the jackal up, and Gavin's own Tyranitar takes the field.[break][break]

She is a horrible creature, a hulking brute whose rocky hide is covered in jutting shards of obsidian crystal. Shards of that same crystal form a DARK SANDSTREAM around her, a hellish sandstorm that affected all but the titan herself.[break][break]

Briny ocean water swells around her as she summons the SURF to assail her foes.[break][break]

Gavin whistles again, this time directing Momo toward the Tyranitar. GRASS KNOTS spring up in an attempt to trip up Navy's newest combatant, using its large size against it.[break][break]

With the possession exhausted, the poor primate collapses once more, wisps of SHADOW MIASMA lingering around its fallen form.

Tyranitar vs Tyranitar seems like a fun clash on paper. The Goodra would prove to be a problem. That left Temp and Durandal to distract it then, right?[break][break]

Nope.[break][break]

A flurry of Shadow Flame erupts from behind the two League members. The Flareon, previously forgotten due to sleep, was never recalled. Instead, Temp had bide time till his Shadow pokemon woke up. Allowed her the privilege to run rampant on the two Trainers.[break][break]

The sticky flames flow like ooze over the landscape, aimed at the Goodra. Uncaring if they harmed Julia Davis.[break][break]

Durandal sped forward to stab at the Goodra with a Leech Life. Aiming to suck dry what she could.[break][break]

Temp glanced at Navy and Julia Davis again, pretending to yawn.[break][break]

"Man, this is boring. I'd have thought the League actually wanted to win."

Somehow, this just seems to get worse with every word spoken by the Rockets. Every trick up their sleeve takes Navy by surprise. They show him things he’s only heard hints about, whispered tales on internet message boards and paranormal websites. Hearing about a human blessed by a Pokemon and seeing one are two entirely different affairs.[break][break]
All he knows is…[break][break]
They’re overwhelmed. He understands at last why his brother died. Because, in this moment, he knows he’s about to repeat the same mistakes that got him killed. A need to not back down. To always march forward, never back. Like the heroes in the story books Navy read to the kid when he was little. The greatest shame a man can endure is a wound on the back, taken while running away.[break][break]
“Hey,” Navy speaks to the ranger, “you should run.” His words are blunt. Not cruel, but he’s resigned to what’s about to happen. “I’ll cover you.” Whether or not he’ll be able to do that remains to be seen. She looks like a cadet, but after facing two people like this and surviving, she seems a full-fledged ranger, good as any other, in his eyes.[break][break]
Once more, his Pokemon is overwhelmed. Two uncoordinated, injured trainers with teams full of injured mons have no chance versus two of Rocket’s best, who themselves seem weathered. Navy shudders to think about what they would be like at their full strength, with teams full of their very best Pokemon.[break][break]
Junior falls back onto the ground, his own weight used against him as the tidal wave takes him. His massive tail slams about. He roars from beneath the wave and channels the power of the earth itself. The ground under them all starts to shake.[break][break]
“Hold onto something” Navy implores her as he finds a rock to cling to. This is probably one of the worst moves to use in an environment like this.

Julia's eyes widened as she watched Gavin's Lucario fight to stay conscious despite its Burn, the strain of Mega Evolution, and the onslaught of attacks that brought it to one trembling knee. How the heck had it not fainted after all that...?! Julia knew firsthand that Mega Evolution was powerful, but there was something else at play here, something that she was still too innocent to realize, especially in the midst of this hectic battlefield.

[break][break]Regardless, the Lucario was recalled back into its Poké Ball, and in its place came the most horrible Tyranitar that Julia had ever seen. That wasn't something she usually thought about even the scariest-looking Pokémon, but something about the obsidian crystals jutting from its hide just felt wrong. The sandstorm forced Julia to hold an arm in front of her face, but at least she had Snaily out to protect her now.

[break][break]Huh... Something was different about this sand. Almost like it was made of...

[break][break]The enemy Tyranitar summoned a briny Surf, and Snaily stood steadfast in front of her trainer to take the hit. One eye watched the possessed Momo, but he focused on Navy's Tyranitar instead of Julia before collapsing. Julia sighed in relief that it was finally over, then immediately felt bad because that was still her precious Pokémon out there. She recalled him to his Poké Ball for some well-deserved rest.

[break][break]There was sudden heat behind her. Snaily let out a distressed squeal and held tight to Julia, making sure her metallic tail was facing the oncoming Shadow Flame. She winced at the hellfire's Burn on her shell, and even Julia could feel it singeing her despite her protector. Only when it died down did Snaily break away and turn to retaliate with an enraged Hydro Pump. Unfortunately, that left her open to the incoming Leech Life, which she tried to swat away with her Gooey arms. Hopefully, her slime would slow her opponent down a bit.

[break][break]Julia gritted her teeth in both frustration and pain. Hadn't the Flareon been recalled after it had been put to sleep? Shoot, she should have known that these two would try to play dirty like that. Navy was right: You really did have to be aggressive with these types. Right now, they were being backed into a corner and getting mocked for it. Julia clenched a trembling fist.

[break][break]Navy told her to run. "But what about you?" she asked. There was no way she could leave this man alone with these... these monsters. These were the Rockets that the League was fighting against, not the innocents dragged into their fold like Isaac Merlo and countless others. These were the ones who were willing to do whatever it took to win, no matter how immoral or cruel.

[break][break]The ground beneath them started to shake under Junior's power. Not again...! Julia thought desperately. She was so, so tired of all the shaking and the rocks falling and the painful memories. Which was probably better than being frozen in fear, but even she found it hard to look on the bright side right now. At least her head was clear enough for her to heed Navy's warning to hold onto something.

[break][break]Snaily squealed in pain as the Earthquake erupted beneath her. Then, much to Julia's horror, the dark shards of the "sandstorm" dug into the Goodra's hide. But Steel-types were supposed to be able to withstand sandstorms! There was definitely something wrong with this one...

In the chaos of the fight, even Gavin had forgotten about the dozing Flareon's presence afield; Tyranitar's crashing wave cares little for friend or foe, drowning them all with equal fervour.[break][break]

Gavin offers no apology. This was war, after all. Instead, he rips a SCATTERBANG free of his belt and lobs it toward the trainers, rather than their Pokémon.[break][break]

Earth trembles underfoot, a sensation Gavin is well familiar with. He drops down to one knee to avoid being toppled by the EARTHQUAKE, which his own Tyranitar endures with a furious roar.[break][break]

And then she makes it worse.[break][break]

Her own EARTHQUAKE challenges that of the foe, once again inconsiderate of Gavin's own allies. The Deep Sea's rock splits not like stone but like flesh, with a horrible squelching sound. Yet the ground still rumbles the same.[break][break]

From the skies, RAIN begins to pour, and a terrible PRESSURE falls over the battlefield.[break][break]

Dark wings cast a large shadow as a leviathan of the deep wings overhead, ruby eyes aglow in the gloom. Each wingbeat casts a fierce gale over the battlefield, and a haunting whalesong echoes overhead.[break][break]

Rocket doesn't fight fair, and neither would Lugia.

Cillian Quinn has the sense to drop to one knee. Temp is confused before the ground shakes. Julia Davis and Navy would have the satisfaction of seeing surprise flicker over the man's face as he wobbled. He'd always done better on the sea than the land and this just made it worse....[break][break]

The water crashes into Agni. The Flareon gives a pathetic mewl, fluff soaked. A whistle sees her darting away from the group, doing her best to keep her footing, before energy gathers around her. A Wish for healing that might keep her from fainting yet.[break][break]

The thick goo from the Goodra sticks to Durandal, gunking her up. Yet more luck is on their side. Lugia heralds a storm. The rain washes off the goo, speeding her back up. (~~Speed Boost~~). Temp clicks his tongue and water gathers around the Kabutops, bolstered by the rain. She turns into a pure arrow of water (Liquidation), darting away from the Goodra and towards the enemy Tyranitar.[break][break]

Gaining his balance again, Temp takes Gavin's lead. He flings Poison Barbs at the Trainers themselves, much like Gavin had. If it worked, the Scatterbangs would stun them and they wouldn't see the Poison Barbs coming.

Only idiots never back down. There are times in a man’s life when he simply must turn and flee. Otherwise, he’ll face death. Death comes for him in the form of a great shadowed monster. Navy has read the stories of Lugia. It is supposed to be a gentle benefactor. This monster is nothing like the stories. His heart skips a beat as blinding light overtakes him.[break][break]
But by Arceus, is he mad. He’s mad at the League. They allowed this monster to be born. Rocket is a problem that could have been nipped in the bud before they could make a monster such as this. With Junior screaming on the ground, Navy resolves to play the last card left in his hand. The trump card. Maybe he’ll die. Maybe he and his great black dragon will burn themselves out together, but he will die fighting.[break][break]
He takes a step forward. Through the earthquake and the whipping dark sands, he moves. Forward, towards the monster that holds a city hostage. If he can kill that creature, even at the cost of his own life, maybe he can make everything right…[break][break]
“We’re not done here.” Navy says moments before a fissure forms under his feet. It splinters. Cracks. The detective is sent falling, along with Junior, into the rift. A swirling void. It saves him from the poison barb. His ears are still ringing from the flashbang.[break][break]
“No!” He’s heard saying as he falls into the sea of dreams. “No, no, no! Dammit! Run!” He implores the ranger one last time. She’s not like him, not some idiot pretending to be a detective. She can cut her losses and flee.

There was some consolation in seeing Temp get caught off-guard by the Earthquake and wobble as the ground shook, surprise flickering across his face. She couldn't look at it long, though; the scatterbang popping at her feet made her flinch back and cover her face with one arm. Then, the Earthquake got even worse with the Shadow Tyrnitar's contribution. The ground split with a squelch like flesh rather than stone. For once, she wished it was the normally terrifying sound of stone cracking.

[break][break]All these attacks were too much for even the sturdy Snaily to handle. With a desperate squeal, she reached out for her trainer, then collapsed with a heavy thud.

[break][break]Pressure fell over the battlefield. And was that... rain?

[break][break]She uncovered her face and felt her eyes nearly bug out of her head when she saw the Pokémon that had joined the fray. She'd thought they could turn this battle around, even with how powerful their opponents were, but the mere presence of Shadow Lugia seemed to drain any hope from her heart. And given what kind of person Julia was, that was a huge feat.

[break][break]She was so entranced by the dark Legendary's presence that she almost didn't see the barbs being flung at her and Navy. She tried to duck behind the rock she was holding onto, but she winced and sucked in air through her teeth when she felt it graze her left bicep. Of course these two still had dirty tricks up their sleeves...

[break][break]Navy stepped forward, declaring that they weren't done here.

[break][break]"What are you—?" Julia started, but the words came to a grinding halt in her throat when she saw the ground beneath Navy began to crack. "Look out!"

[break][break]Too late. Navy fell into a swirling void, shouting for Julia to run. She inhaled a shaky gasp, eyes wide and fearful. She was alone now. These two Rockets had powerful Shadow Pokémon at their side. And now even Shadow Lugia was here. She tried to reach inside herself for that last bit of hope to give her strength, only to find that what she'd thought was an endless reserves had been scraped dry.

[break][break]She couldn't do this.

[break][break]One hand scrambled for Snaily's Poké Ball to recall her back to safety. The other fumbled through a pouch at her waist and managed to grab something soft and round. She threw the Sticky Glob on the ground between her and the Rockets, and then she turned and ran as fast as she could, trying to ignore the pain and exhaustion that ran through her veins.

[break][break]That wouldn't be enough, she realized in a panic. They had Lugia on their side. Even if it wasn't a Legendary, it could fly. Some sticky patch of floor wouldn't stop it. She clumsily reached into a different pouch for a piece of the mysterious ore the League had stockpiled. She had no idea how it worked, but she threw it hard against the ground and kept running. Behind her, she heard rumbling and the unnerving squelch of the realm's stone shifting. She glanced back to see it had risen into a fleshy wall. Normally, that'd be disgusting. Right now, it was the only thing standing between her and Gavin's shadowy patron.

[break][break]She didn't stick around to see how long it'd hold.

Gavin blinks, impassive, as the Rift swallows Navy.[break][break]

One problem down, one to go.[break][break]

The full force of his murderous intent becomes focused on Julia Davis. It doesn't matter that she's young. Green. She'd been offered the chance to run and rejected it; that had decided her fate. And she's right — the STICKY GLOB won't stop them.[break][break]

With Lugia's RAIN, it'd barely even slow them down.[break][break]

Gavin recalls his Tyranitar, sending out an Eelektross that LEVITATES above the blood-and-rain-soaked battlefield. It seems normal enough until it opens its mouth to hiss, a ring of obsidian jaws in place of teeth. Another shadow. Of course.[break][break]

Gavin's whistle rises over the roar of raindrops.[break][break]

He points to the fleeing Ranger.[break][break]

"Kill."[break][break]

Electricity sparks around the eel as it darts forth... only to be stopped by the cavern's sudden shift. In the blink of an eye, there is a wall where once the air had been. There was no guessing at its thickness, it's sturdiness.[break][break]

They could break it with time, Gavin is sure... but he shakes his head.[break][break]

"Dumb luck," he declares, and turns to his husband. His eyes are empty, cold. Some of their warmth returns as he takes in his lover's face, steps closer to him. "Come, love. Let's get back to camp."

Temp had flung one last Sticky Glob at Julia Davis. But it just slams into the fleshy wall with a wet slap. A sigh. Temp ends up calling his pokemon back and leaning heavily on Cillian Quinn. Not tired, just to be close.[break][break]

"Shame." Is grumbled out.[break][break]

Temp pauses.[break][break]

Then leans over to steal a quick kiss from Gavin's cheek.[break][break]

Navy and Julia Davis wouldn't get away next time if Temp had anything to say about it.
