THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

Once again, Gunner found himself in the world beyond the rift known as Ultra Crater. A thick forest of bamboo stalks crowded around him, their leaves blocking out the sky. Carefully, he wove his way between the plants.[break][break]

The Wilds realm was a dangerous place for a solitary human, but it was the perfect place to train his Iron Valiant. The mysterious Pokémon was the newest addition to his team. As a result, it wasn't used to Gunner's commands — or to obeying him in general.[break][break]

"Keep your eyes open for anything unusual," he instructed the Iron Valiant, who he'd named Kahadin. "We always want to be on high alert, especially in hostile territory."[break][break]

The Pokémon said nothing. Instead, it glowered at Gunner as if offended to receive orders.[break][break]

Before Gunner could say anything else, however, the ground rumbled. A mini earthquake, perhaps. Or maybe it was another Celesteela rocketing off to an unknown location. He waited until the tremor passed, then continued forward.

GIDEON GRAVES had finally returned to the Ultra Crater for a second expedition, though a good chunk of time had passed since the last — due in large part to the injuries he'd sustained weeks ago.[break][break]

Mercifully, every breath wasn't absolute agony now. He'd been approved by his doctors to return to the field - though Gideon suspected they didn't realize the scope of his adventurous ambitions. He couldn't be contained to their world any longer, not when there was so much more to explore in these new frontiers.[break][break]

Safely, of course. With a highly-qualified escort in the form of angelo vestri.[break][break]

Something that he didn't see when they happened to come across a man training in one of the craters. Against all odds, Gideon actually recognized the man and — well, it was likely his companion had never seen such reined in fury on the professor's face before.[break][break]

"Angelo," He spoke up, calm before the coming storm. "Excuse me a moment. My brother and I need to have a little chat."[break][break]

The small tremor that shook the earth as he walked mirrored the rumbling anger found just beneath the surface of Gideon's cool façade. [break][break]

"Gunner." He didn't yell, didn't lash out. But his expression would be all that his brother needed to see to realize the severity of his mistake.[break][break]

"What are you doing here - alone?"

Funny how venturing into volatile, alternative worlds had become something of a break to Angelo as of late. A place to unwind, feel himself. Forget.

It had been a series of whirlwinds since Dewford.

Stepping through the rift alongside GIDEON GRAVES, he's instantly hit with the intense humidity. Thick and stuffy. Its effect heightened by the dense bamboo forests that tower above their heads, sunlight pale.

Angelo releases an impressed whistle, then sends out his Iron Moth to help record the terrain. Its wings adjusting like satellite panels.

Gideon is the first to spot their unexpected company through the tangle of vegetation, however.

The professor receives no complaint or request for an explanation. As the eldest of five, Angelo knew that tone very, very well. Best to leave him to it.

“Arceus have mercy on his soul,” he murmurs under his breath, raising a hand towards Gunner Graves in a (farewell?) wave.

It leaves the Nautica owner with a good excuse as any to take a look around.

Followed by his robotic assistant, he investigates through the nearby maze of alien-tall bamboo. Gathering sweat on his skin and leaves on his clothes, until he comes to the lip of a crater.

Crouching down, Angelo wafts steam away as if it were an irritating gnat to better read the inscription.

A dragon's jewel, huh?

He reaches into the pack attached to his hip...

Gunner was a trained field operative for the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, which meant he spotted the two men before they spotted him. And as soon as he recognized one of them was his brother, he stayed very still amid a cluster of bamboo, hoping they would pass without noticing him.[break][break]

Unfortunately, Kahadin had other ideas. The Iron Valiant cut down bamboo to summon another group of Kartana nesting within the stalks. They rustled angrily as the Paradox Pokémon turned its blades upon them. The commotion was enough to draw the attention of Gideon and his companion.[break][break]

Gunner stifled a groan. The other man was none other than angelo vestri.[break][break]

He maintained a sour expression as Gideon approached. Gunner recognized the tension in his brother's expression, the way it tightened the lines of his face. Gideon was pissed.[break][break]

"Training my new Pokémon," Gunner replied testily, standing up to his full height and looking Gideon dead in the eyes.[break][break]

The effect would have had more impact if another tremor hadn't decided to knock him off balance. Gunner recovered quickly, steadying himself on the stalk of a nearby bamboo plant.[break][break]

"What are you doing here? It's not safe."

Gideon's raging thoughts were kept in check, but just barely. His brother was lucky the small tremor nearly knocked him off his feet too, otherwise choice words might have been said aloud that couldn't be taken back.[break][break]

Once the ground settled, he instead said:[break][break]

"Field work with Mr. Vestri." Gideon didn't even bother to gesture to angelo vestri, who was likely staying well clear of the brothers and their bickering. "I'm not foolish enough to come alone. Because you're right, it's not safe."[break][break]

Here the professor pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled loudly.[break][break]

"Come with us. Now." [break][break]

God, it was like they were kids again and Gideon was ordering Gunner away from the edge of a steep embankment. 'But look how awesome it is over here!' he'd said, before nearly tumbling over the edge. Gideon was just barely able to react in time and keep him from certain catastrophe. [break][break]

That mentality hadn't changed much.

Their bickering is white noise beyond the curtain of bamboo, blending in amongst the rustle of the leaves.

Angelo is too focused on the Soul Dew, encased flame warm upon his palm. Too busy weighing up the allure of curiosity and his better judgement to pay much attention to the Graves brother's squabble.

His thumb caresses the smooth, glass exterior. Hesitating. There was still a need for the flame, an attachment to the dew, he couldn't risk losing...

In the end however, the tremors decide for him.

“Oh, shit!”

Beneath Angelo the ground quakes, his crouched position throwing him off balance. He catches himself but not the dragon jewel, slipping out of his grip.

It rolls neatly into a groove in the crater.

“Shit!”

Angelo snatches it out of the small offering divot before it has a chance to disappear, then gets to his feet.

Gradually the world begins to dim, warm gold of the ultra crater day replaced with silver light, playing through the bamboo. Sun replaced by the rise of the moon.

Best see if the brothers were done fighting yet.

Kahadin had fallen silent. Gunner glanced over and saw that the small Pokémon it had been fighting were either unconscious or had fled. The Iron Valiant now looked at its trainer curiously, as if awaiting orders.[break][break]

"Fine," he relented with an aggrieved sigh.[break][break]

Without waiting for Gideon to lead them, Gunner headed over to where Angelo lingered, his boots stomping loudly through the underbrush. As he walked, the world around them grew dim; looking up, he watched, awestruck, as the sun rapidly began to set. Opposite it, a full moon rose.[break][break]

"What just happened?" Gunner asked Angelo as soon as they were within hearing distance from each other.[break][break]

Without warning, the ground shook with another tremor — but instead of a mild one like before, earth and stone ripped apart with tremendous force.[break][break]

The reflexes gained through Gunner's spy training saved him; he retreated from the chasm forming where he'd once stood, easily stepping from loose stone to loose stone until he reached safety.[break][break]

When he finally looked back at the fissure, his jaw dropped. A Celesteela had emerged from underground and appeared to be taking off. A sense of deja vu flashed through Gunner. This was not unlike his and Gideon's last visit, when they'd ridden a similar Pokémon to a crater much like the one that spread out before them.[break][break]

Pressurized jets of gas ejected from the Celesteela, one right in Gunner's direction. "Look out!" he shouted to the others as his Iron Valiant used WIDE GUARD to protect against it. The bamboo outside of the defensive shield, however, immediately caught flame.

Relief softened the anger lines on Gideon’s face. He’d admittedly expected a bigger fight from Gunner, so seeing him acquiescence so easily was a small victory in and of itself. [break][break]

The elder Graves followed after the younger, walking back to where he’d left angelo vestri, but stopped in his tracks as the world darkened around them. A huge moon seemingly appeared out of nowhere and hung ominously in the sky, bidden by some unknown power.[break][break]

“Did you do something, Angelo? This seems–” Gideon began to question, but was cut off by the incredibly powerful tremors that rocked the land and opened rifts under their feet. He narrowly avoided falling into one, but ended up tumbling onto the ground.[break][break]

Moments later, the pressurized gas ignited flames that engulfed the surrounding vegetation and, consequently, found purchase on the professor’s sleeve.[break][break]

Gunner Graves’s WIDE GUARD didn’t have the scope to reach Gideon. A hungry fire quickly grew on the fabric, starting to burn the flesh beneath. [break][break]

“Oh shit!” Gideon echoed his companion from earlier, instinctively trying to swat the blooming flame until it was smothered away.

Angelo barely has enough time to secure the Soul Dew into his pocket, before the world explodes.

With teeth clenched, the pilot runs as the growing chasm bites at his heel. He's fast. This time however, not fast enough. Rescuing the jewel had cost him.

As earth crumbles away, Angelo feels his foot - his chest - plunge into pitch darkness where he'd expected solid surface, rocks clattering down.

Fuck that.

Summoning a tailwind around his body, Angelo propels himself forward clear of the splintering fissure. He doesn't land so much as he hits the ground in a roll, momentum seeing him jump clear of the expanding fissure.

At least the leap could easily be passed off as him being thrown from the emerging celesteela's blast.

Shelter is found temporarily behind a thick clump of bamboo, until the worst of the gas and flame passes. He watches intrigued as the celesteela begin their climb into the strangely early night sky...

“You guys alright?”

Jogging back towards the brothers, Angelo ignores the sweat from the blast of heat and a stray bamboo leaf in his collar tickling his skin.

He releases his togekiss, Ankaa, when GIDEON GRAVES's burn is noticed. She lets out a worried croon, life dew sprinkling down to relieve wounds and douse tiny fires.

Angelo's attention briefly flickers skyward, following contrails. “They're eager to get out of here. That or there's something up there...”

"I'm fine. What about you, Gideon? Are you okay? Show me your arm," the younger Graves demanded, reaching for his brother.[break][break]

Wrapped up with worry, he did not hear Angelo's comment or bother looking up to watch the Celesteela's moonward arc.

Despite being a stumbling mess in front of both Gunner Graves and angelo vestri for a second time now, the professor managed to smother the worst of the flames, leaving only smoldering fabric - and flesh - where the fire had licked at his body. [break][break]

“I’m fine, I’m fine.” He wasn’t. Gideon breathed in sharply almost immediately after saying this, expelling a low hiss as he attempted to control the flaring pain screaming at all the nerves in his forearm. Thankfully, the TOGEKISS’ LIFE DEW offered blessed relief, assuaging much of the discomfort and beginning the healing process. [break][break]

Gunner’s worried pleas didn’t go unnoticed, though. Once the LIFE DEW had done its thing, Gideon extended his arm out for his brother to inspect. “I’m good, Gunner.”[break][break]

There was still anger festering over his sibling’s lies and deceit, yet the other’s concern pulled at his heartstrings. This prolonged period of resentment was weighing on Gideon; he hated how their relationship was suffering right now. But there was still care there, too.[break][break]

“Let's focus on why we’re here.” Gideon insisted, taking attention off of himself and focusing it on the celestial body in the sky. “Angelo, do you have any idea what’s going on with that moon? Why are the Celesteela drawn to it?”

Angelo stays silent as Gunner Graves rushes over.

There are no speaking parts for him to play in this moment between him and GIDEON GRAVES. Not when familial concern hints to sink deeper than that of burns.

He keeps his contemplations to himself, skyward.

Ankaa, however, inspects the arm that the professor extends towards his brother like a nosy mother hen. Giving a pleased chirp when she's satisfied with the healing process.

“No clue. I was checking out these craters,” he responds when the topic swings back, glossing over the finer details. “And then the moon started to rise. Could've triggered something by accident, I guess.”

Angelo turns back to the brothers then. On his tongue, an intention guised as a suggestion forms.

“I can follow one of them with Ankaa, see if I can spot anything of interest.”

Gunner was not a religious man, yet a prayer of gratitude to Arceus ran through his mind. Gideon's burn could have been much worse. He'd managed to put it out before it could spread to the rest of his body; plus, Togekiss' healing was already kicking in.[break][break]

Still, Gunner fixed Gideon with a concerned stare before turning his gaze to the sky, as the others had.[break][break]

"That's a good idea," the special agent said, squinting at the moon's surface to see if he could identify anything odd. But of course he couldn't. The celestial object was too far away. "Perhaps there's something about the moon that's different here than the one in our world."[break][break]
