Ultra Megalopolis - Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

Another day, another expedition into the realm known as Lesser Megalopolis. Zev and his team had finally discovered a set of stairs in a back corner of the first floor of the Lesser Megalo Tower.[break][break]

Nearby, they wrenched a door open to find what seemed like a storage closet or locker room. A row of human-sized capsules had shattered, leaving shards of glass strewn across the floor like the Z-crystals outside. Some of the containers were empty, but others contained a remarkable find.[break][break]

Uniforms and helmets. Zev recognized them as the clothing worn by several Megalopolans that populated the city, both living and dead.[break][break]

"We could use these," he said to his companions, BARNABY FINCH and Marza Volchitsa. They had been courageous and curious enough to accompany him on this trip again. Reaching through a hole in the glass, Zev started to remove three sets of intact uniforms.

This place became more and more horrifying with each successive visit. Despite the inherent danger of this realm, their aim was to ascend even higher within Lesser Megalo Tower this time around, hoping to discover... what?[break][break]

The admin didn't have a clue. Zev Harcourt sure seemed dead set on it, though.[break][break]

Barnaby sniffed as the Beast handed him a musky uniform. "Not exactly my style, but..." He'd try it out. [break][break]

Not like they had much choice, either, considering the tight quarters that were likely up ahead. Their group would need every advantage they could get to traverse further undetected...[break][break]

As Zev undressed, Barnaby's eyes lingered on his body, appreciating every scar-ridden muscle. His gaze would flick to Marza Volchitsa, too, doing much the same as he started to pull his left leg through the suit.

It was her second venture into this place — dark, bleak, strangely beautiful. Everything was so arbitrary and different from the world they were most familiar with. In every dark place, there might live something terrifying. She wasn't afraid of it, but rather curious. Their last expedition had been without incident, which was frankly fucking disappointing. She was itching for violence, but had a feeling it wouldn't come (not yet at least).

Zev managed to find uniforms. To what pursuit, she couldn't exactly tell. It wasn't her style to be soft or quiet, definitely not infiltration. However, she was finding more often then not being a beast required flexibility. Even if she was rigid as stone in that regard.

Zev zipped up the uniform and tucked the helmet under his arm, not yet ready to put it on his head. Once the other two were similarly dressed, he led them across the hall to the dark stairwell leading up. With a soft whistle, he urged his Chandelure to go first, the Pokémon's natural illumination lighting the way.[break][break]

The second floor of the Lesser Megalo Tower was pitch black. In the dim glow of Chandelure's light, Zev spotted equipment in the ceiling that could be lights, but each one was cold and dark.[break][break]

"Do you think these helmets have built-in flashlights?" he whispered to Bee and Marza, even as he checked the front of the one he carried.[break][break]

Then he heard it: a familiar groan and shuffle of feet from somewhere in the blackness.[break][break]

They were not alone.

While Marza Volchitsa may not have been as inclined toward stealth, this type of operation was a little more BARNABY FINCH's speed. He easily crouched into a slinking walk, careful to avoid the discarded crystals on the ground as they ascended to the next story of the building.[break][break]

Where the first floor had been a more expansive, lobby-esque space, the second floor of Megalo Tower was much more segmented into typical cubicle and office areas. Nondescript, defunct technology littered the desks, prompting Barnaby to wonder what exactly the tower had been used for before... well, whatever plight had occurred here.[break][break]

Clunk... clunk... clunk...[break][break]

Barnaby heard the sounds just as Zev Harcourt froze in place. Shuffling footfalls — lots of them — and he could guess from what.[break][break]

"Looks like they do," The admin confirmed softly, seeing the button on the side of his helmet with an imprinted lightbulb at the center of it. It gave him an idea.[break][break]

Even with their disguises, it was likely too packed in here for them to sneak past all of the zombified Megalopolans without being noticed. Fighting all of them would be risky, much to Marza's dismay, he'd bet. So that left distraction.[break][break]

"On the count of three, we're going to move forward as quickly and quietly as possible." Barnaby tightened his grip on the helmet in his hands.[break][break]

"One... two... three—!"[break][break]

In one fluid movement, he pressed the button on the side of his helmet, sending a beam of light across the floor, before immediately chucking it as hard as he could into a faraway corner.[break][break]

The Megalopolans swarmed around it like rats.

The outfit was tight, claustrophobic with its awkward helmet and constrictive uniform. All the things that Marza was not quite into. It was strange to ascend, finding a world that very much mirrored their own. It had cubicles and offices, remnants of an old society that no longer existed beyond the chaotic screeches of the maddened megalopolans. It still felt eerily like they were walking on the bones of an apocalypse that might one day destroy their own world.

Rocket was already entirely too comfortable fucking around with things they didn't understand. As BARNABY FINCH spoke, she paused to listen. Despite her desire for a fight, she'd never let bloodlust come in the way of a job. Maybe a younger version of her might have, but she had two people there depending on her (one way or another) not to fuck things up for the sake of making it more interesting.

The light streaked across the room, illuminating the horrendous faces of the megalopolans for just that second before it landed. The light flickered, scattered and maddened movement the only thing she could see as she ran forward. It was impossible to see at that point, but all there was to do was run. Until they got to the door at the other end of the hall, blocked by rubble. Quickly releasing Great Tusk, it rammed into the rubble, busting the doors open in the process. "Quick, get in! Bar it closed." The bottom of the door scrapped against the linoleum as she shoved one side closed with a heavy creak. The scramble of the megalopolans was the only sound to show the light distraction had lost its value.

On Bee's count, Zev dashed down the hallway as quietly as possible. He reached for a Pokéball to clear out the rubble in front of the door, but Marza was faster. Her Great Tusk barreled through, making a path for them. So instead, Zev shoved the other side closed, then pushed a heavy metal cabinet in front of both doors.[break][break]

Panting lightly, he took a moment to look around the landing. Another set of stairs led up, but the matching one leading to the lower floor had crumbled away. "We go up, then," he told his companions.[break][break]

The third floor of Lesser Megalo Tower was much like the second: an office space, according to what scant light they possessed, and pitch black. After listening for more raving Megalopolans and hearing only silence, Zev proceeded deeper into the darkness.[break][break]

"Maybe we can find some information about what happened here," he suggested, opening a door at random. His Chandelure floated through the entrance first, casting light on what seemed like a large conference room.[break][break]

Movement in a corner of the chamber caught his attention: the bright glow of a Fire-type attack about to ignite.[break][break]

Zev jerked away, scrambling back from the door. Chandelure took the brunt of the FIRE BLAST from the Blacephalon, whose eerie laughter echoed throughout the ruin like a disembodied voice.

After some quick thinking on the part of Barnaby's companions, the trio found themselves safely on the third floor.[break][break]

This one was distinctly quieter than the last. No shuffling feet, no ragged breathing. In fact, it didn't seem like there were any Megalopolans here at all...[break][break]

"There might be some hint on all these computers..." He doubted they would turn on if he tried to boot them up, but perhaps they could salvage the hard drives and bring them bac—[break][break]

A searing burst of fire bloomed close enough that Barnaby felt the intense heat through his protective suit. Following closely after was a gurgle of horrible laughter and the appearance of some sort of distorted clown.[break][break]

Not one, but two.[break][break]

Shit. Barnaby released his Illumina STARMIE, rationalizing that these creatures were some sort of Fire-type given the FIRE BLAST he just witnessed. [break][break]

"Power Gem!" The admin instructed, hoping the centralized attack would avoid the technology on this floor. He wanted to salvage what he could.[break][break]

"Zev, you alright?!" It was hard to tell if he'd been caught in the flames.

From one danger to be immediately met by another. It shouldn't have been at all surprising considering what they'd had to put up with since arriving in this place. Still, the heat stung, even as she dove away from the door as well. In truth, she wasn't about to complain though, this just meant things were finally about to get interesting.

With a quick command, Great Tusk lashed out towards the fucking clown they were fighting with a heavy tantrum of stomps. This shit was getting entirely too weird.

"I'm fine!" Zev shouted back as he released another Pokémon to fight the strange, clown-like creatures. His Sharpedo emerged in a flash of light. A sharp click from her master prompted the shark to attack with LIQUIDATION.[break][break]

The clown screeched in agony. Something about the two inhabitants of the tower seemed familiar. Zev stared hard, eyes narrowed, until it clicked: one of these had attacked Slateport City a few years ago on New Year's Eve.[break][break]

But in the light of Fire-type attacks and the two Illumina Pokémon, he could clearly see that they were different, too. They were enshrouded in black metal, similar to the armor worn by Pokémon he recalled from a dream.[break][break]

A CRUNCH from Zev's Sharpedo brought one of the clowns low, scattering black metal everywhere. The ones closest to Zev zipped toward him, like iron shavings drawn to a magnet. He ignored the now-familiar sensation of shards wriggling into his skin as he threw a Pokéball to capture the Ultra Beast.

It was hard to tell at first, but through the flashes of fire Barnaby recognized these Ultra Beasts as BLACEPHALON. However, they were dissimilar to the images and video he'd seen of them prior to this encounter. These two creatures were sporting some sort of black metal... armor...[break][break]

Searing echoes of familiarity forced themselves to the forefront of Barnaby's memory; flickering images of feathers and fighting and fear. Nothing concrete. But, he was sure he'd seen something like this before.[break][break]

STARMIE continued the battle without prompting from their master, taking the brunt of another FIRE BLAST with ease and using the opening thereafter to execute a second POWER GEM. The force of the attack penetrated the black armor and knocked the BLACEPHALON to its knees. Seeing an opportunity, Barnaby lobbed a Luxury Ball at the Ultra Beast, ultimately catching the odd creature.[break][break]

With Zev's own success, the third floor suddenly fell silent, save for the sprinkling of water from STARMIE to put out small errant fires. Barnaby looked to both of his companions to make sure they were alright in the aftermath, and happened to catch several shards of metal bury into Zev Harcourt's skin. [break][break]

BARNABY FINCH wasn't sure if he'd ever get used to that.[break][break]

"Good job." The admin praised both human and Pokémon alike. "Let's sweep the rest of this floor. Be careful as you open doors. There might be more of them."

Ultra beasts, it wasn't her first time seeing them, but it was definitely the closest. The clash of fire and varied attacks lasted only for a moment before silence returned as the freaky-looking clowns were successfully closed within their pokeballs. "Well shit, okay." She snorted. Not really something you see every day, but there really was never a dull day in Rocket.

It didn't miss her attention that Zev's ability seemed to flare up with alarming consistency. He said he had control and she had no reason to think otherwise, but control was often an illusion at best. She nodded at Barnaby's suggestion before sweeping the rest of the room they were in, peering through cracked doors into the dark spaces within. Great Tusk was returned to his pokeball, still snorting over the battle.

"No more clowns, so far as I can see." Let that not be an invitation for more freaks though.

"Then let's see what we can find here," Zev said once Marza confirmed the coast was clear. He stalked off to investigate the other rooms, but they were designed for meetings and conferences, much like the first room they'd entered.[break][break]

He did, however, find another set of stairs ascending to a fourth floor. The stairs down to the second floor were blocked off with debris — too much for them to clear in a short timeframe.[break][break]

"Over here," Zev called out, waving his hand to get his companions' attention. His Illumina Chandelure bobbed up and down to assist, a beacon in the darkness. "I found another stairwell."[break][break]

Even before Bee and Marza reached him, he began to climb them. This time, his Sharpedo led the way.[break][break]

As Marza Volchitsa cleared the rest of the floor and Zev Harcourt inspected the separate enclosed offices lining the walls, Barnaby spent some time going through the bullpens in the main area. There were documents strewn about, though most had rotted with time, making the text illegible. Even if it wasn't, he wasn't sure if ROCKET or humanity in general had transcribed the Megalopolan language yet.[break][break]

Images faired a bit better. He saw traces of diagrams, graphs, charts, hinting at but not revealing the purpose of the building they found themselves in. Nothing on paper seemed salvageable enough, so the admin settled on dismantling a few of the computers using a compact screwdriver he'd brought with him. With any luck, the technology he plucked from within held recoverable data.[break][break]

Zev's beckoning drew his attention to the next flight of stairs.[break][break]

"Coming." Barnaby replied, pocketing the (what he hoped were) hard drives into his bag.[break][break]

The fourth floor, for whatever reason, was in a bit better shape than the ones below it. Here, the papers throughout the office had fared better. There was actual discernable text on many of the documents, and clear images showing...[break][break]

Were those Ultra Beasts?[break][break]

"Take a look at this." He called out to his team, gesturing to the paper in his hand. Though he couldn't translate the text, the picture showed BLACEPHALON growing in size over, what Barnaby assumed, was a fixed amount of time.[break][break]
