soon enough, the event starts.

kyle parks his manectric by the shore, ordering him to sit and stay as he leaves his belongings by his feet. he drops the belt bag strapped around his torso on his manectric and discards his shirt, casually tossing it on his manectric's face. slipping his flip-flops off of his feet as he ran to the nearest mantine, he ignored his manectric with his things altogether.

his feet felt hot against the sand, and then cold as it reached the waters. he quickly hopped onto one of the mantine, leading it up to the wave that would be everyone else's stage for this day.

truth be told, he did not know any tricks. he just knows that there was this one cool trick when he happened to watch it on a television when he was channel surfing. he attempts to do it from memory alone.

Where was he, when a competition of his homeland was happening? Running to the scene, for he had barely woken up. Already in his surfing attire, the man rushed past all the watchers and beside the announcer, reaching a mantine and getting on it.[break][break]

"We got a late start, but let's show them the might of Alola, buddy!" The mantine emitted a small screech before going on the waves. The creature knew his things, as it kept going up and down to get as much speed as possible. Maybe it was time to do this trick? The hardest of them all, the one he never succeeded back in his hometown? "Let's do this, Mantine!" As both were determined to do their best, Balder directed the mantine to the top of a wave, beginning the motion for the Magikarp Splash

she's late but there is no elegant excuse for it.

once upon a time she had cleaned the very same beach with a war veteran, as if that was somehow foreshadowing to the rocket siege. the memory of the latter lies bitter on the back of her tongue, and she finds herself almost turning away from the competition grounds.

the waves call her back, glinting a welcome in the warm afternoon sun. perse is comfortable in the water but this is something else entirely. perse pats her rental mantine and the pair launch forward in a spray of sea water.

depending on how others perform she might ramp it up, but for now perse settles on a primarina twist.

[attr="class","starrytext"]"hell yeah!" a shout was uttered. he was stoked, pumped, excited! he was going to win this, "and i'm ready to shred some waves!" he was ready to shred some waves! all while wearing mightyena-styled speedo's!

as he stepped out. he felt so uncool wearing a dog-based speedo. he wanted a dragon. "i told that dumb mutt to get me gyarados trunks." this was totally embarrassing and hurting his ego. talk about lame.

it was time for the competition to start. though, with rosy cheeks, he'd wear a confidant expression. as he stood over his mantine, he'd hit upon the head, "don't let me drown out there or i'm gonna stuff you down that angus guys shorts!" looking up, he'd look toward the announcer, "who the hell is angus?! is that your name? it's dumb, change it!" mateo shouted with demand. it sounded weird with that accent!

he had to get his focus going. he only had one chance to perform this trick, he was going to perform it. he was here to outperform! "here we go!" and so, they were off. he attempted to perform an OVER-THE-GYARADOS.

perhaps it was the echo of a memory, of a person she once new. sunny smile, bright eyes and light warmth. the fervent wish to participate in something like this was typical of that person. the platinum blonde knows she had promised one thing. to live - for her, for them, for everyone that didn't make it. a cross on her back, but she bore it as best she could, despite not knowing how to deal with it. and so, that was probably why, all together, she found herself at such a frivolous activity as mantine surfing. her fingers twitch, even as the bells and whistles go off. she had been so lost in thought, she had missed her chance to well, set up more then she already have.

adjusting the bikini that she was uncomfortable wearing, she finds herself heading out into the water. and seeing the daring of others, the survivor found herself almost smiling. such adorable efforts... perhaps she could find purchase in trying something new? the black cloth against her pale skin left her movement flexible. she had tied her hair, leaving a long ponytail streaming behind her. and she knew that her scars were showing. but in the moment, all of that melted away, as she felt a spark of competition enter her soul for the first time since team rocket's arrival in kanto.

olivia hummed a melody to the mantine as she fawned over the water pokemon. perhaps she would catch one and bring it back to sootopolis. while she mused over the idea, alexander approached with a friendly smile and quick glance to the beach. was he making sure the cameras were on the two of them?

olivia barely managed to fein a smile and wave before a loud whistle cut through their conversation. thank the gods. she gave him a nod as he went off towards the crashing waves. little did he know that the competitive spirit that got olivia through so much had been ignited by the blow of the whistle - and she was ready to take on the world. or at least the waves.

she gave a quick prayer to the gods of the sea before hopping atop the mantine. she was getting ready for a primarina twist.

She's nervous, but more than that, she had had half a mind to turn around and not look back. For starters, water wasn't her cup of tea - she wasn't a strong swimmer and she much preferred the safety net of having two feet on solid ground.[break][break]

But, Balder Schwartz had convinced her that this was a sport back in Alola and that it was fun. Perhaps that was the real reason she was here. SHe needed to have a little fun. The last few days, maybe even weeks, had been riddled with stress and general unhappiness. It was time to kick back and relax a bit.[break][break]

And what better way than enjoying the impending sense of doom at the chance she might drown?[break][break]
She watched anxiously as everyone began wading out to sea and mounting their Mantine's. She caught a glimpse of several familiar faces, but was too frozen with fear to really acknowledge any of them.[break][break]

When she finally got herself situated on the back of her slippery water-type Pokemon she had borrowed, that sinking feeling of doom seemed to settle in her gut.[break][break]

There had been a list handed out, or maybe she'd stolen it, listing all of the tricks that she could try. Some of them were easy and some were extremely difficult. She settled on coaxing her Mantine into attempting a LANTURN.[break][break]

She was, however, holding on tight with both hands, paper stuck between her teeth. Hopefully the paper was laminated![break][break]

What was the point if he was going to get wet anyway?

Lars had decided to leave the gel at home, and had shown up a bit late because some stupid delivery couldn’t fucking wait and he had to get it to this ‘little old lady’ who’d moved into Slateport and man, he was so fucking pissed he was going to miss the first half of the competition!

Hoping that he didn’t draw too much attention, right after he’d dropped off the package that had to fucking go, he decided to hightail it through the downtown area, riding his bike through the crowds and screaming bloody murder in his other tongue at slow-walking passersby who were literally taking their time to see the sights.

…maybe it was lucky he was yelling in his second language, then? Nobody took notice of the blur that literally shot past them, trying to get to the beach like a Roman Candle.

He eventually made it to the beach, locked his bike on the closest rack he could find, and slung his backpack over his shoulder—before making a flat-out dash towards one of the changing houses so he could get the fuck out of his delivery service uniform.

Some ten harried minutes later, he’d found a locker and left his clothes in it, had barely enough time to duck under a shower to get himself wet enough and sprint full-tilt across the sand and grab onto one of the last few Mantine that didn’t have a rider.

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fucking shit!

He thought he saw a lot of familiar-looking faces in the crowd as well as out on the waves, but paid them all no heed as he did a quick mind-sprint review of how to do the Lanturn 360.

He wasn’t going to push his luck.

Nope.

No. fucking. Way.

olivia landed the backflip onto her mantine perfectly, completing her primarina twist and she caught the tail end of alexander crashing into the waves. she stifled a laugh, and urged her mantine onwards towards the fallen champion.

her manitine caught up to where stone has fallen, and olivia dipped down beneath the surface to help the man back onto his own pokémon. “having a bit of trouble with the waves, alexander?” olivia asked with a sly grin.

the cameras on the beach refocused their attention on the champion of hoenn and the foreign queen of sootopolis. who knows what the media would make of their little exchange, it wasn’t like they could hear them with the crashing waves and applause for the other contestants. olivia leaned in, her voice a sultry splash against his ears, “how do you expect to get a rein in on the house of salt if you can’t even ride the waves?” she gave the man a flirtatious wink and quick peck on the cheek.

“try not to fall off next time, stone, you might sink.” olivia advised, the same sly smile on her lips as she paddled away.

sunning herself on the beach alongside her blastoise felt heavenly. it was nearly enough to make her miss the competition, hence why she was late. but, eventually, the girl was roused to her feet. with an encouraging pat on the head by the massive turtle, who looked a bit teary eyed like a concerned parent, noelle settled out to do the first round.

cooing at the mantine she settled on, the wild child thankfully didn't go with what her gut initially wanted to do; the magikarp splash. that just seemed...complex. confusing. difficult. both mateo and chance were here, she couldn't mess up! especially not in front of mateo. maybe if she won the competition, he'd see how much she'd grown into a 'competent young woman', yea?

and so, after giving a frantic wave to her blastoise even if she probably should've been paying attention, she went for an over-the-gyarados.

he fails his trick and is engulfed by the rolling waves that shove him underwater. despite the nature of his wipe out he feels comfortable staying below the surface for a while, at least until the large wave breaks. it's only then does he notice another mantine and its surfer coming to help him.

he breathes when they resurface. "just a little," he responds as he swings back on his mantine, noticing how a fair few also failed their tricks. he doesn't feel as bad anymore. she leans in to whisper something and follows it by pecking his cheek. as surprised as he is he isn't given much time to react before she paddles away.

adrenaline drowns his thoughts for now as he sets off to the next wave. he rides it, notices the WHALE and tries to avoid it as he soars up for yet another MAGIKARP SPLASH.
