Well, this was awkward.[break][break]
"Greyson," Caleb nodded at the other man, trying to keep his expression pleasant - or at the very least, neutral. The last time they'd talked, it had devolved rather quickly into a tense confrontation rather than a respectful conversation.[break][break]
freya morningstar had insisted that Greyson was "one of the better ones", but Caleb had found him to be just as small-minded - quick to dismiss a former Rocket seeking amnesty - as the majority of the League's higher ups.[break][break]
Remember what you promised Ollie, he reminded himself. No more bitterness. No more anger. They were going to fight for men like Caleb - like Isaac - the right way. Maybe, eventually, someone like Greyson would be able to get on board.[break][break]
For now, though, they were assigned to survey the network of caves at the bottom of the strange new chasm that had opened up beneath the Silent Icelands. Another dangerous anomaly, one Caleb doubted the Rangers could really do much about. This was the sort of thing scientists should be studying...but, he supposed, they wouldn't be able to if the League government didn't make sure it was safe first.[break][break]
Nox clicked a warning, and Caleb followed the Lokix's gaze. Normally the sleek black insect would blend easily into the shadows, but now he was bathed in the ethereal blue light of a thousand glittering Tera crystals. They blanketed the walls and ceiling like a hungry geological moss.[break][break]
"Hear something?" He asked the Pokemon, raising an eyebrow and straining his ears.[break][break]

The Elite Four member wore a long coat over a casual hoodie, sleeves rolled to the forearms, and hands lazily in placed in its pockets.

Deep beneath the earth you were likely to be overly-warm, or overly-cold -- he wanted to be prepared for the latter if need be.

A Comfey peeks from above the lining of his pocket, eyes wide and curious. At Caleb's question to his Pokemon, his eyes flit behind him, a scowl forming.

Something did indeed loom in the shadows of the cave system, perched higher on the upper shelves of rock to better assess who — or what — roamed this newly discovered area of Hoenn.[break][break]

"Look who we have here," Barnaby observed over comms, which were tuned into Lulu Flint's frequency.[break][break]

"One Elite Four," Greyson Connors. What were the chances of running into him again? [break][break]

"And the little ranger you encountered at the lip of the chasm." Caleb Harcourt's appearance was an annoyance for more than one reason. Barnaby couldn't kill him here, but he also wasn't at liberty to tell Lulu Flint why that was. [break][break]

Time to fake it.[break][break]

The PORYGON-Z at Barnaby's side hovered closer to the edge of where his master stood and, with one subtle gestured command, began charging its attack. A ZAP CANNON soon shot forward, blasting a cliffside slightly above where the two LEAGUE operatives were walking.[break][break]

The beam of energy landed closer to Greyson Connors, causing boulders and large chunks of rock to careen down toward the man.[break][break]

Electricity crackled through the humid air, slamming into the rock wall behind Greyson with a crash that reverberated through the cavern. Caleb didn't hesitate, body reacting before his mind could catch up. He launched himself towards the other man, shoving him away from the falling debris. It wasn't the most graceful maneuver: a jagged Tera crystal sliced through his jeans in the process, opening a long cut across his thigh. Blood seeped into the fabric as he tumbled forward, the added momentum causing him to fall onto Greyson rather than next to him.[break][break]
The assault didn't end there, however. Flames blasted forth from the same direction, but this time it was Nox who was ready to defend. The Lokix hopped in front of the prone men, a well-timed ENDURE allowing him to disperse the flames without taking too much damage. His wings buzzed, cutting through the fire with slashes of air, but he did not come out of it entirely unsinged.[break][break]
"You okay?" Caleb asked, staring down at Greyson with genuine concern, his annoyance with the Elite Four forgotten in the face of sudden danger.[break][break]
It seemed Rocket had made it to this particular section of the cave first...[break][break]

[attr="class","snub-greyson"]A grunt escapes his lips as the other man crashes into him, flesh meeting flesh, bare skin scraping stone beneath. He hisses in protest, clenched teeth delaying the slew of filth ready at the tip of his tongue.

It dies quickly beneath the echoes of the falling stone that reverberate throughout the cave.

"I'm fine," his tone still carries the irritation of skin scraped raw, but he releases a heavy-breathe to filter out the worst of it. Seeing blood, Greyson lifts his wrist towards Caleb's wound, and the Comfey wrapped around his wrist begins to work her

floral healing

.

"Get off," he grumbles out, pushing him off should he not be fast enough. Once on his feet, he looks in the direction from which the attacks came. From his palm comes a flash of white light, and a Pokemon takes shape before him — a Zoroark.

"That was your one chance.. and you blew it." Greyson smiles, though it's not the same genuine kind he gives to so many others. No, this one was predatorial. Blood-hungry. He needed an outlet to let out some steam and they'd come to him.

His Zoroark's grin matches his own, that was until it began to flicker, and fade. Then, like smoke before a strong gust of wind, the

illusion

fades.

He truly did love that technique. Even if he could only use it once, it was not to be underestimated. To prove as such, the real Zoroark rips herself free from the cave ceiling and descends onto the Noivern with

With its built-in binocular function, BARNABY FINCH's mask allowed him to view the aftermath of their attack in crisp HD resolution. [break][break]

The two LEAGUE men tumbling to the earth, one after the other, was a pleasant — though somewhat annoying — surprise. Of course Caleb Harcourt would play the sacrificial hero, come to save Greyson Connors's tight ass. All while sustaining an injury, too. Typical.[break][break]

"Kill it." Barnaby instructed his PORYGON-Z, gesturing to the LOKIX. If he couldn't gravely hurt Caleb, his Pokémon would do fine in his stead.[break][break]

Using MAGNET RISE, the PORYGON-Z zipped across the open space between rock outcroppings, whizzing closer to where its target stood. Still hovering, it then began generating another bout of electricity within its body before releasing an incredibly powerful GIGAVOLT HAVOC on LOKIX. [break][break]

Even if the attack missed, it would be devastating to the surrounding environment. Would the men be able to dodge in such close quarters?[break][break]

the admin’s command was unsurprisingly brutal. she would join him in such aggression easily, all her previous repentance abandoned.[break][break]

noivern terastallized in a brilliant flash of purple, sparkling as it tried to roll and thrust its attacker downward with a dragon pulse.[break][break]

suddenly, a noise like the violent cry of a pokemon echoed from below the ground. she looked down, asking BARNABY FINCH over comms, "did you hear that? there's something underground..."

Caleb had never seen someone wear a Comfey like a bracelet; he stared down at the living flower wreath with wide-eyed surprise, until it began to heal his leg: then his expression melted into one of sincere gratitude.[break][break]
"Thank - "[break][break]
Caleb was unceremoniously shoved off of Greyson, his "thank you" forgotten in the face of new threats. Greyson moved to direct his Zoroark, attention ripped away from Caleb and their near death experience. Fine, they could address that later. Caleb rolled over, pushed himself to his feet, then turned in the direction where he'd last seen Nox.[break][break]
The Lokix was in the midst of scrambling away from something hovering in the middle of the cavern. Something small, but clearly gathering power.[break][break]
A lot of power.[break][break]
"Fuck," Caleb swore. As if sensing his sudden distress - and powered by the surrounding shards of possibility able to feed off human emotions, dreams, and desires - the Tera orb at his hip began to glow. Nox's body shimmered with the energy of Terastallization and his new golden crystal armor crackled with electricity.[break][break]
The massive electric Z-Move exploded outwards in all directions; thankfully, Nox's new typing allowed for a measure of resistance: he would not succumb to death, much to the chagrin of the Rocket Admin watching from the shadows. He was, however, knocked voliently backwards into Caleb, who found himself, once more, on the ground.[break][break]
More rocks began to tumble down from the cavern ceiling. This time, razor sharp spears of Tera crystal fell with them, and Caleb twisted to avoid getting impaled.[break][break]
It was then that a keening wail sounded throughout the cave system. Nox weakly turned in the direction of the sound, prepared to defend Caleb from whatever abomination might burst forth.[break][break]
"Great," Caleb sighed, exasperated.[break][break]

Caleb's near death experience, the battle held between admin and defector, not even the piercing cry that reverberated so powerfully against the cave walls. In-fact, so entranced in the soon-to-be bloodthirsty affair, Greyson doesn't even notice when the comfey around his wrist projects a

protective

barrier around himself and Caleb Harcourt.

No, nothing but the battle in-front of him mattered, and getting back at the woman responsible. BARNABY FINCH's flash of light did more than pose a threat to their lives — it gave Greyson the moment he needed to understand who he was facing today.

His grin only widened.

"Wasn't one ass beating enough Flint? Pretty-boy? If I knew you were so eager to prove yourselves incompatant again, I would've gone spelunking sooner."

further lights the cavern, meeting the crossed-guard of his Zoroark and pushing her back with each passing second. Her forearms are scorched from the assault, but she'd walked away from far worse wounds than this. This continued assault did offer one advantage, however — an opponent who couldn't looking away.

Standing her hairs on end, she opens her maw and releases a

ray of confusion

aimed directly for her opponent.

Greyson's voice rises above it all.

"Tear that bat apart."

Under the swirl of chaotic, draconic light, Zoroark's nail's glisten eagerly.

The sound Lulu Flint referenced reverberated eerily off the crystalline walls around them.[break][break]

"Something to investigate once these two are dealt with." Admin Bee replied through comms, his attention still on Caleb Harcourt and his LOKIX. Much to his chagrin, the pesky insect was still alive even after taking the brunt of a Z-MOVE.[break][break]

Suddenly, Greyson Connors's voice rang out into the gloom. The idiocy of it brought a smile to BARNABY FINCH's lips, hidden behind his mask.[break][break]

"What can I say? I couldn't stay away after last time." Though his position was compromised, Barnaby still had the high ground. He remained where he was, taunting from on high — for now.[break][break]

"Looks like you brought a scruffy tagalong with you. He doesn't seem to be very good at his job, hm? All he's doing is flopping around on the ground."[break][break]

As if to emphasize his point, PORYGON-Z blasted a PSYBEAM their way.[break][break]

Nox DETECTED BARNABY FINCH first, bristling. Wings buzzing, he leapt forward, intent on protecting Caleb from further harm. As the Ranger pushed himself to his feet, he turned in the direction his Lokix was facing.[break][break]
He knew that mask. He'd ripped it off its owner's face in the Ultra Deep Sea. And of course, when the man spoke, Caleb knew his voice - distorted as it was.[break][break]
"Scruffy tagalong? Fuck you," he muttered, indignant. Barnaby's haughty mouth could be put to far better use than spitting stupid insults.[break][break]
Before he had a chance to retort, however, another massive explosion took place, momentarily deafening him. Sick and tired of the chaos, he motioned for Nox to enter the fray. "Do something about the Porygon-Z," he ordered. It seemed Greyson was handling the other Rocket - a vaguely familiar woman - and her Noivern.[break][break]
Where had Caleb seen her before? He wracked his brain, shifting to the side to avoid more falling rocks.[break][break]
Nox streaked towards Barnaby's Pokemon, then swiped down, hard, with a THROAT CHOP.[break][break]
Caleb grit his teeth, frustration beginning to rise. He could not, under any circumstances, let Greyson find out Barnaby's identity. Doing so would lose him the leverage he had against the Rocket Admin. That's not quite it, a voice hissed in the back of his mind. The whole affair was muddied, and he knew it.[break][break]
Well, he'd just have to deal with Barnaby himself, then. Resigned, he began running towards his unlikely lover.[break][break]

Ignorance of the relationship between Caleb Harcourt and BARNABY FINCH is what allows him to let the Elite Ranger run right past him. Well, that and the BOOMBURST that echoes throughout the cave and leave's Greyson's skull throbbing, and ears ringing.

Had he been even a few feet closer to the dragon-type, his eardrums might've shattered entirely. That thought nests at the forefront of his mind, and with it, an anger so potent his lip curls in disgust without conscious thought.

"Give me that fucking bat's head!"

Not one to typically lose his cool like this, the emotion was somehow exhilarating. He felt no need to give quarter to these two and their Pokémon; no reason to continue the typical back-and-forth or act in decorum.

Last he'd seen Lulu she'd nearly sunk a ship of sailors, for no other reason than because she'd wanted to. Fitting that she was sent off cowering.

And this other man? Had Greyson not stepped in he very well could've taken a whole platoon prisoner. Greyson knew what they did to prisoners.

annalise henderson's face comes to mind and that anger from before fills every spare inch of him, leaving nothing behind.

He gave these two mercy last time. And how did that turn out? Twice — no, three times now — they'd tried to kill him.

They wouldn't get another.

In-between the palms of the Zoroark an orb of dense black is nurtured. It consumes the nearby light of the crystals, growing bigger with each passing millisecond. Clear disorientation is present on the Zoroark, her senses more heightened than a humans, thus more effected by Lulu Flint's attack, but she didn't need her senses perfect for this.

Copying the same strategies as her opponents, she pushes the orb towards the ceiling, watching it expand until it crashes against the cavern's roof and summons their own little cave in.

Caleb Harcourt would just need to make sure to move out of the way. Or don't. Greyson wasn't really paying to the man anyways.

BARNABY FINCH appreciated Lulu Flint's warning. He'd just been able to clasp his palms over his ears when the BOOMBURST rang out, causing stalactites to shudder above them. Inevitably they came crashing down as well, along with sizeable chunks of earth and stone, given Greyson Connors's attack on the ceiling.[break][break]

BARNABY FINCH sprinted out of the way as best he could, dodging the largest of the rocks, but it left him cut off from Lulu Flint.[break][break]

"You focus on Connors. I'll take care of the other one." He communicated over comms, leaving behind his PORYGON-Z to fight before running further into the cavern's intricate tunnels. [break][break]

Soon enough he found an adequate alcove and hid in its shadows, turning off his earpiece while he waited.[break][break]

When Caleb Harcourt eventually came along, he'd grab the other man by the collar and drag him closer, away from prying eyes.[break][break]
