[break][break] He knew, within his heart of hearts, that Elisabeth Fiorelli was right. There was a reason that they had been chosen by the Ruinous Beasts who staked a claim on them. Perhaps they had been watching, looking, observing for them the whole time. Perhaps all the decisions they had made - or not made - in their life had somehow led to this point.

[break][break] Jayden knew all of this, yet he could not help the ache that grew in his chest at the reminder.

[break][break] 'You were chosen' suddenly seemed synonymous with 'You were cursed'.

[break][break] "So we do," he murmured in response, glancing down at his hand. Staring down at his palm, he observed the creases of his pale skin which - at the start of their training - had been smooth and soft to the touch. Now, it was marred by ice crystals and blood that peaked through the surface, almost as if it was a reminder of the suffering he wielded.

[break][break] His fingers curled into a fist, blood spreading through his palm, and he glanced up at her just as HATRED reshaped into crystal ice, flashing into the pointed end of a spear.

Many Galarians held an opinion, one way or another, about their royal families. Either they were held in high contempt, such was the way of men like Cillian Quinn, or perhaps it endeared them to them further, worshipping them like celebrities.

[break][break] Ballonea was tucked faraway from the prominence of Hammerlocke. Not only that, Dmitri had always been very sure in the way that he carried himself, with such self-assuredness that one would think he was borne of nobility rather than wed into it.

'you are not to blame.'

[break][break] for as many people that jayden had told this story, it was only Naomi Sato who had comforted him. who had assured him that it was not his fault. who reminded him that it was chu-e who had given the gift to him, not the other way around.

[break][break] still, his heart stuttered, his breath hitched as he held back another sob.

[break][break] vaguely, he recognized the feeling of her hands brushing softly against his. his head fell against her shoulder, choking back a cry.

[break][break] it seemed that Naomi Sato's words had brought another onslaught of feelings, these sharper and drastically different than the rest.

just like that, the world shifted.

[break][break] all it took was one word, one thought, one choice made different. like a stone cast into a pond, those ripples would cascade endlessly outwards, permanently altering the paths that had already been carved for them in the sand. the tale of two boys, once so similar and distanced by vast oceans, would converge once again.

[break][break] "are you sure?" jayden said, raising his eyes to stare deeply at the former admin, once upon a time, they had been sword and shield. but now, they would not be. they were superior and inferior. leader and follower. "i'm going to hold you to it, you know."

[break][break] those words jerked jayden back to the past, as unwilling as it may have ben. he knew exactly what it was like to be separated from your brother forcefully, remembered how deeply SILAS BLACKWELL had shook the region, and how empty he had felt without Cillian Quinn to watch over him. it weighed heavily on him, even now.
