[break][break] Confusion flickers in his eyes. Jayden is not used to people wanting to spend time with him. Most of the time, it was because of work, or because of Rocket, or because - in the past - Dmitri had ordered it.

[break][break] Unsure yet obedient to a fault, the Rocket grunt sits down on the blanket. It feels soft beneath him, pliant as the grass bends under his weight. In the moonlight, Chu-e's face looks soft. Gentle. It makes his throat bob in an uncertain way.

[break][break] 'Are you hungry?'

[break][break] The answer is no, but he takes the sandwich anyway.

[break][break] Wrapping it gently with nimble fingers, the plastic pries open. The sandwich, too, feels soft in his mouth as he bites into it.

[break][break] "Thank you," he says when he swallows. His cheeks are slightly flushed. "These are good."

Hitoshi's words break no understanding. After all, to him, a sword is just a sword. Not a divine being.

[break][break] Yet, he thinks he can understand. He has always found a likeness for such weaponry. His eyes glimmer with the memory of a sunset duel, knives flown in the air and the gentle curve of Chu-e Choi's smile. The dark embers of a churning forge as he stood beside Aurelie Lefevre.

[break][break] "I will use the sword you like then," he says instead. Ice tingles in his fingertips, disappearing from sight.

[break][break] HATRED has no place in his heart, not today, anyway. Not when he stands by Hitoshi Inoue.

[break][break] "Wait, Hitoshi, don't - !"

[break][break] His warning comes too light. A bright, piercing sound cuts through the air. Followed by the loud moan of creatures in the distance. Shit.

[break][break] "Let's go. Now."

[break][break] Ripping apart a nearby doorway, they are blasted back into the city's open sky. Starlight twinkles above, darkness stretching across the vast expanse of the city. On either side, they are met with the unsettling sight of hostile Megolopolans stumbling closer. Cornered from all directions. Jayden's jaw locks, his eyes snapping towards their only avenue of escape.

[break][break] Whistling, his Duoblade shoots past him and uses a SPRINGTIDE storm to clear the air. Bodies are tossed to the side like ragdolls as space is made for the two swordhands, and then his hand reaches out towards Hitoshi, palm splayed.

[break][break] 'Trust me.'

[break][break] And then, when the time is right, ice gathers beneath his feet and they are shot skyward into the air by a pillar.

"Then I suggest you read your notes more thoroughly," he says, teeth slightly bared. "You'd be surprised what you'd find."

[break][break] HATRED radiated off of Jayden in waves as cold mist echoed in the air, making it difficult to tell if the sudden crescendo of emotion was due to the appearance of his patron of Jayden himself. The feline did not move as the archeologist peered closer to him, eyes emotionless as gazing into an endless abyss.

[break][break] "Naturally," he said, the air cooling to a normal temperature at the pivot back to the conversation at hand. Rocket. The thing that kept him currently tethered to this earth. "I am Rocket's sword, and for Rocket I shall serve."

[break][break] "Did you think I functioned as Rocket's training and offense mantle for no reason, Admin Slayte?"

[break][break] A pause, then glancing at howard slayte's body, as if staring at it for the first time.

[break][break] "Speaking of. How often do you train? You are out of shape."

[break][break] In an instant, the world whirled beneath his feet and then, all of it was gone — everything. Ground dissolved into an expansive void, blue-tinged space swallowing everything in it's path. When Jayden blinked, he realized that he was no longer in the Rocket sub. Was no longer in the hospital room, where things went to die.

[break][break] They were somewhere else, no longer confined to the restrictions of the normal world and the new sort of suffering that he had inherited from his patron's bond.

[break][break] It felt, suddenly, easier to breathe.

[break][break] His sister clutched at him and his fingers curled around her shoulders, already feeling the warmth seep into his skin. Whether it was because of the influence of the Unown cloud that swirled above them or her presence itself, his heart stuttered eventually into silence.

[break][break] Their hands in his hair is a gentle comfort, even though it is warmth against ice. He leans into their touch, not noticing the way the ice crystals flake onto the bedding. He leans a cheek against their shoulder, his breathing growing shallow once more.

[break][break] When he closes his eyes, he sees the bright-red and amber-sharp glares, a snarling face that has him trembling against their side. When he opens them to look at Fern through fluttering eyelids, he sees waves of sea-tossed blue that soothe over his frosted skin like a sweet balm.

[break][break] Only fern delaney has this impact on him, he thinks. Without them, he is nothing.

[break][break] He reaches for them, hand brushing against their cheek. His touch is warmer now, more human.

[break][break] "We'll chase him away together duck," he vows. "We will be his ruination."
