Even if Mars had any idea of how much he and Izzy shared between dark sheets and sleepless nights, Izzy would never have opened himself up to welcome sympathy. He struggled deeply with the concept of allowing even the people who called themselves his friends (usually by force, as per the cases of Ceri Glynn and BARNABY FINCH), so accepting something as dirty as pity from his superior would be like plunging hot needles into his eyes.[break][break]

He nods a little, gives an awkward, unpractised, attempt-at-polite smile. "Yeah, things got busy up here nowadays. I'd find somewhere else to hang, but the ghosts like it up here" He taps gently at a pokéball at his belt.[break][break]

A Spoink's little snorts are heard not too far away, coinciding with each bounce of it's springed tail. With his hand already so close, Izzy pulls an empty ball from the collection and aims it at the bouncing pokémon before him.[break][break]

Izzy was less stressed after his speed date with Derek - having a brief conversation with someone who acted normal was refreshing. As the bell declared another date was to be had, Izzy went towards this one with a little more hope and a little less soul-crushing anxiety.[break][break]

That lack of anxiety lasted maybe a couple seconds at best, right up until he saw his match. Had to be a joke, or a mix up, right? Had he fucked up, or had she? The emphasis being on she - Izzy'd been signed up to talk to talk to guys, right? Did Ceri Glynn think he liked girls? Oh god.[break][break]

He approaches quietly, like a kid who doesn't quite know if they're allowed to be here.[break][break]

"You're, uh- I think we're paired up...?" Much more a question than a statement - he's still not even sure he's talking to the right person, after all.

He spends that night tossing and turning, thinking about the mist and that great, mist-ridden horse. The next morning it's practically calling him to return to the mountain. He goes about his day and makes the journey again as the hours draw in.[break][break]

After a short climb he returns until he can feel that sensation again, that pair of watchful eyes on the back of his head. Clenched in one hand, though he's not entirely sure if it would accept it, is a TAMATO BERRY. The soft, fleshy spikes on the berry's outer skin press lightly against the inside of his palm.[break][break]

Izzy turns to face the creature once again, knowing full well it came to him in search of his offering.[break][break]

"Here you go", he speaks, and holds the berry out flat-palmed for the spectral horse. "Hope it's not too spicy for you"

Izzy looks up with brows raised as she bursts out laughing, but as she talks more about her own experience with Barnaby it brings a slight smile to his face. Maybe it was something to do with the fact that talking about Bee to her like this kind of felt like talking to a friend about another, mutual friend - the air felt good and calm, like how he imagined people who liked each other talked.[break][break]

"I do know him, yeah, we're-" He paused, we're friends, he nearly said. Were they that? If Bee were here, he'd probably say they were, but these kinds of words came much more easily to someone like Barnaby. "We've worked together a couple times. He was there when I got my ribs fucked up. Made sure I didn't, like, bleed out and all that, and... yeah, he's... cool." He trails off as he remembers in painful detail what came after the rib breaking and the coming home. A blush creeps across his face. "...even despite the name"[break][break]

His own fancy thoughts fade away as she worries her fingers around the tablecloth and leans her cheek into her hand. Izzy'd never had a lot of practice with consoling or sympathising, mostly because he lacked practise with socialising in general, but he didn't feel the same stress and i wish this was over he did when over people said sad or emotional things. Elisabeth had extended courtesy to him, and he extended it back in turn.[break][break]

"I'm sorry about your family and your lover and... all that." His gaze meets hers, ice blue on crystal blue. "I never had anything like that, either, but I don't..." He sighs, giving himself a moment to think. "I don't think that that's what's important. Or... maybe it is, but if you think about that being, uh, the most important stuff, like, all the time-- what I mean is, like, it just feels shitty if you dwell on it. I think it's good that you're not afraid"[break][break]

His own candidness surprises him, and he sits back a little to give that surprise space to breathe, but is cut off quickly by Elisabeth calling him something he had never expected to be called. Izzy had been all kinds of things in his years - asshole, dipshit, piece of trash, gutter rat. He'd never before heard someone call him kind.[break][break]

"I don't know about all that, but... I..." He clears his throat, watches the two happy little grass-types snuggle up to distract himself from the lump that threatens to form in his throat. The dull pain lodged in the back of his windpipe only stabs harder when she offers him to share her space.[break][break]

"...It's just been a crazy couple of days." He says, quietly, out-loud but not really aimed at Elisabeth. Instead, more aimed at himself, an apology for feeling emotional in this moment.

She sips, and so does he, an exact mirrored image - as best he can - of the way she did it. He'd never learnt about soup spoons and dessert forks and which way to shake a rich guy's hand; and that was evident from, uh, all of him, but he didn't want to seem so uncouth as to not know how to drink fancy tea.[break][break]

"Yeah, you're telling me. I know a guy goes by Bee." He replies, as if reading her mind. Or maybe it was the fact that BARNABY FINCH was still buried deep in his mind, alongside the image of their kiss. Izzy moves on quickly to try and fight off the threat of reddened cheeks. "...U-uh, yeah, Rose or something... would make sense, considering, y'know, everything" He gestures roughly with one hand to the plantlife surrounding them. "...But don't you ever worry someone'll figure it out?"[break][break]

He takes another madeleine as she introduces them, popping it straight in his mouth to go down just after the mouthful of tea. "They're really good- did you make these ones? I... yeah, I like 'em."[break][break]

For a moment, after she begins speaking and then excuses herself, Izzy worries he's said something wrong. He's left alone with the tea and the madeleines - very dangerous for the sweet baked treats, as he takes yet one more. As Daffodil :catto:'s towards her disappearing trainer, Lawenda moves on from the meringues and rubs her cheek against the flowers on the top of the Bellossom's head. A little "don't worry" from one grass type to another.[break][break]

Izzy taps a fingernail against the side of the teacup while he waits, then as Elisabeth descends once more, this time with a painting in her arms. He looks it over, takes another little sip of tea and pops the cup down on it's saucer. "That's really pretty" He decides. "It's cool that it's super similar to here. Must've really been like... what's the word... like, made an impression on you, and stuff"[break][break]

He goes to pick up the cup once more, the dull ache in his ribs subsided slightly from having rested for a while, but stops suddenly as she asks him about safety and safe places. Do you have a place like that?[break][break]

Izzy lets it sit for a little while, then speaks up just as the silence in the air begins to become a little awkward.[break][break]

"I... don't know. I guess I, uh... ah... I just ignore it."[break][break]

It wasn't entirely an answer to the question that Elisabeth was answering, not plainly, but it made sense to him in a simple way that meant he didn't have to tell her how troubled things could be in his little head. The it in question, of course, being the forever-sense of not having a safe place. How could he have one, after all, when his hometown was nothing but bad memories, and his current place was a constant threat from Rocket to take everything away from him in one fell swoop?
