The girl's fear gave Nomi pause, and she lowered her hand. Had she really come on that strong?[break][break]
It was then that Nomi took the time to really look at who she was dealing with: a young woman around her own age, civilian clothing, and utterly terrified. And yet, defiance radiated from her: she was being entirely genuine about her hatred of Father Winter.[break][break]
She may have insulted Nomi, but she could see now that it had been a misunderstanding. This girl was an ally, not an enemy.[break][break]
She was merely ignorant, and now it was up to Nomi to educate her.[break][break]
So what do I have to do with any of this?[break][break]
"Everyone has a part to play," Nomi explained softly, voice lowered, demeanor calm. "If you want to hurt the DRK Triad, I can help you do so."[break][break]
Trust was built upon truth.[break][break]
"The Unown call me The Visionary," she continued. "I am their Avatar, yes."[break][break]
She held out her hand once more, but this time, it was accompanied by a smile.[break][break]
"Let's start over."

Parker took up the offensive, moving before Nomi had a chance to hold her back. Like a knight in shining (brass) armor, she cut an imposing figure as she stalked through the parted flames, her anger as sharp as any sword. Amulius's presence made Nomi's heart soar, his speed outmatching the Charizard: he could be relied upon to watch Parker's back, and she always fought best by his side.[break][break]
It should have been enough.[break][break]
A gunshot rang out, heralding doom. Nomi gasped, feeling sluggish, trying desperately to see through the smoke and ash. Had Parker been hit? A part of her brain felt like it was short-circuiting as she tried to make sense of why - [break][break]
- ("Sorry, do I know you?") -[break][break]
- Gunner Graves would have a gun - [break][break]
- ("I'm a paralegal.") - [break][break]
- on his person, but more than that - why would he hurt them? Why would he hurt them when he had been at their - [break][break]
"Parker!"[break][break]
Light burst forth from the Charizard, shining a beacon on everything within the perimeter of their makeshift campsite. Nomi's throat seized up, suddenly so parched she could hardly breath, and she clutched at her neck with feeble hands. A pool of magma bubbled up from the ground beneath her, threatening to consume the Visionary, and she thought for a half-heartbeat that this would be where she died.[break][break]
And then the magma was blasted away: all three pools splashing backwards, away from Nomi. Remus growled low in the back of his throat, the COUNTER timed perfectly to dismiss Penelope's vengeful attack. Nomi looked to him, feeling numb, and it was then that she noticed his paw on her leg. A warmth that was far more soothing than the violent heat conjured by the Councilwoman's rage coursed through her, the HEAL PULSE causing her mind to clear and her aching body to stabilize.[break][break]
And that was enough.[break][break]
She leapt to her feet, and extended her consciousness outwards in all directions, as far as she could reach. Kallistatus beamed her intention to the Collective, calling them back to their Avatar, and in an instant, eyes began to pop into existence all around Nomi. All of the Unown she had sent out into the world to spy for Rocket, for her, had returned.

It was at that moment - as Maisey gobbled up Avery's affection like so many gourmet Poke-treats - that Nomi felt suddenly displaced. It was like she'd wandered into the restricted section of the university library without meaning to, surrounded by a history she hadn't been given explicit permission to read. Here was the biting back-and-forth of sibling jest, the intimacy of sisterhood, the sort of laughter that was entirely bespoke - customized to fit inside jokes only, so Arceus be with you if you happened to be on the outside.[break][break]
It wasn't Avery who was the third wheel, it was Nomi.[break][break]
An odd sensation was making her sweat - like it was summer not winter - and it was only after Avery had deemed Kallistatus "cute" that Nomi realized that the feeling she was experiencing was jealousy.[break][break]
Jealousy because Maisey liked Avery better than her. Jealousy because Avery obviously knew things about Parker that Nomi didn't. Jealousy because she'd never had a little sister. Or a big sister. Or anybody, really.[break][break]
"I - " She cleared her throat, trying to find the smile that Avery absolutely deserved. "I did! It was very okay. I mean - delicious! Like, deliciously okay. Erm."[break][break]
If this continued, she might actually perish. Which would probably be nice, all things considered.

Nomi wanted to ask, in that moment, who had taken Elisabeth Fiorelli for granted - who had so profoundly rejected her - that she had come to believe such a sentiment. Is that really what will happen? Not just with the Unown, but with parker jones too? Was all that she loved destined to disappoint her, in the end?[break][break]
It was jarring to feel such ugly tragedy in the Underboss's words, in contrast to the tenderness by which she touched Nomi - like a mother to a daughter, almost. It was so unlike her, that Nomi wondered for a moment if she had conjured this version of Elisabeth via dream mist somehow, and that the real one had left her laboratory several minutes ago. But there had been no dream mist here, no Tera Energy, nothing to suggest this wasn't the actual Elisabeth.[break][break]
This is the real her, Nomi realized with a start, and for the first time, she felt the truth brush her skin with its own gentle caress: that nothing twisted had ever started out that way. Some rocks became gems when polished, others were always beautiful until cracked.[break][break]
"It's good advice," she murmured sincerely, wondering as to the nature of Elisabeth's own family - were they the ones that had taught her so harsh a lesson about trust? "I appreciate you looking out for me."[break][break]
She certainly did not have to, and they both knew it. Nomi decided, in that moment, that this might be the closest thing to real friendliness she would ever receive from Elisabeth.[break][break]
"I'll wrap up here, and send out a report to the rest of Rocket's leadership by day's end."[break][break]
She paused, running her thumb over one of the vials of blood. It was still warm.[break][break]
"Thank you, Elisabeth."

"Oh," she blinked. Then she laughed, and it echoed across time and space. The Unown wheeled overhead, energy pulsing in vibrant bursts. Some floated down to Shred, spelling nonsense words as they circled him. "There is no exist. Er, rather, I'm the exit."[break][break]
She padded over to the Beast, resting her hand on his shoulder.[break][break]
"I'll take us back to the sub," she explained. "To my lab."[break][break]
There, she would begin to write up a report on their encounter with Kyogre. Hopefully parker jones would be there, napping on the couch. It occurred to her, then, that Shred and Parker would probably get along. Nomi had a feeling Parker would find him amusing.[break][break]
"Oh, and if my girlfriend's there, I'll introduce you!"[break][break]
She beamed up at him, an innocent bubblegum-pink Avatar with the power to reshape reality.

They waited. And waited. Nomi's arm began to ache from holding the book aloft. And still, they waited.[break][break]
"Nothing," she sighed, finally releasing her hold on it, arm dropping to her side. "A shame, indeed."[break][break]
She stared into the pit of vibrant energy, contemplating its nature. Amor began to list off other experiments - Tera Energy, for example - but it wasn't until he mentioned howard slayte that Nomi perked up, glancing his way once more.[break][break]
"Howard? Yes, he's brilliant," she agreed. "I've been meaning to talk to him about the book. Thank you for the reminder."[break][break]
She'd also been meaning to talk to BARNABY FINCH, too. The Admin had attracted the attention of one of the Galarian birds that had emerged from the book, which had struck Nomi as rather significant.[break][break]
"Shall I take us back?" She asked. "This was not a wasteful experiment, but there's little point in staying."

The DIVINE IMMANENCE bought Yuina and her Iron Crown just enough time to set up a powerful counter attack to the might of the alien beasts. Nomi watched, expression impressed, as the FOCUS BLAST slammed into both the larger monster and its smaller counterpart, shattering the metallic black armor around their bodies, revealing the true forms of the Pokemon within: forms Nomi finally recognized from other Rocket expedition notes she'd read about Lesser Megalopolis.[break][break]
"They are Ultra Beasts," she told Yuina, racking her brain for their names. "Guzzlord and Blacephalon."[break][break]
The trio of Unown summoned a collective beam of HIDDEN POWER to join with the paradox's relentless assault, which tipped the scales just enough for Yuina's Pokeball to make contact with the Guzzlord, a flash of light consuming the weakened dragon. Nomi saw her chance, as well, and - finding a Premier Ball at her hip - attempted to catch the glittering, multi-colored Blacephalon.[break][break]
The dust cleared, silence save for their breathing, and the soft mechanical thrum of the Iron Crown. Nomi scooped up the Premier Ball, staring down at it with an appreciative - almost reverent - gaze. Then she looked back up at Yuina, pleased.[break][break]
"Excellent job!" Nomi lauded, but her expression soon sobered. "We should head back now, in case another pair of Ultra Beasts attacks." They needed to regroup, let their Pokemon rest.[break][break]
Now that the danger had passed, the Unown-? returned to Yuina's side, hovering by her shoulder.[break][break]
Nomi's smile returned, and she nodded respectfully to it.[break][break]
"Take good care of her," she told the little symbol.

Nomi pulled away, feeling only slightly awkward for having hugged Andrea rather unceremoniously. She cleared her throat, focusing on the other woman's next question.[break][break]
If she had not already heard about this League RKS Machine from Navy, she would have been more intrigued. The shock of learning that the League had their own version of the simulated universe had already come and gone. So when Andrea mentioned it, Nomi did not bat an eyelash. Instead, she merely smiled, a mix of grim and weary.[break][break]
"Behind it? Perhaps. Able to infiltrate it? Absolutely."[break][break]
She glanced at Kallistatus, thinking back to when they had first met.[break][break]
"Isaac and I were attacked by a member of the DRK Triad named Nisa Holo in the RKS Machine a few months ago. It was during that fight that the Unown made me their Avatar. This one - " she nodded at the shiny blue Unown-K, " - betrayed its former mistress and joined me."[break][break]
Now her smile turned fond, sincere affection for the symbol Pokemon plainly visible.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad treat the Unown like tools. I offered them love instead."

"Well, try and be careful," she advised him, fighting the guilt that churned her stomach. "If you go back, I mean." She paused. "I've heard Team Rocket has taken an interest in whatever valuables might be down there."[break][break]
She glanced at the Scream Tail, thinking of the various paradoxes that had emerged from the dream mist. Rocket would absolutely take advantage of the potential of such dangerous creatures. They had proven to be quite ferocious; when tamed, as deadly as any weapon.[break][break]
"In any case, let's get started with the samples. And if you'd like to keep it around for a bit - for further study - by all means, please do."[break][break]
Nomi gently laid a hand on his arm, smiling encouragingly up at her professor.[break][break]
"I am confident you'll be able to draw all sorts of fascinating conclusions."[break][break]
She might have felt guilty for the injuries he had sustained in the Ultra Deep Sea, but she would certainly share his findings with her Rocket peers without batting so much as an eyelash; after all, it wasn't like the university's research was unavailable to the public. Anyone could gain access to it, if they knew where and how to look.

She remembered.[break][break]
She remembered the rants, the cursing, the way Damien seemed so frustrated. She also remembered the pining, the blushing, the way his gaze would go vacant, as if recalling an especially vivid memory - but not necessarily in a bad way? She remembered the man's name and how much depth there was to the way Damien said it, the layers and layers of complicated emotions, the way it was burned into his heart like a brand: painful, permanent, a price to be paid.[break][break]
"Frank, right?"[break][break]
She narrowed her eyes, a slight frown forming across her lips. It wasn't that she judged Damien for his choice in...associates, but she simply did not like the people she cared about to suffer, even a little.[break][break]
She also didn't like not knowing things, and this Frank fellow was, for the most part, still a mystery to her.[break][break]
"What about him, Damien?"

Nomi's cheeks reddened slightly as Elisabeth Fiorelli barked out a harsh laugh, acidic in its mockery, made all the more biting because it wasn't necessarily unwarranted.[break][break]
Nomi did know a great deal about the ways Gods could monitor humanity - not just their actions, but their thoughts and feelings. But Tapu Fini and Wo-Chien had abandoned Elisabeth, to varying degrees, in recent history: so were they always paying close attention, like a flock of Fearow circling their prey? No legendary Pokemon was omniscient save perhaps Arceus itself, and Nomi had doubts about that as well - considering all of the DRK Triad's cryptic warnings about being perceived by it.[break][break]
Elisabeth's answer came and went like a leaf on the wind, inconsequential, equal parts deflection and honest uncertainty. As she folded in on herself, however, clearly contemplating the weight of such a choice, it almost softened her - almost reminded Nomi of the woman she used to be, before the crushing weight of Wo-Chien's ruination had seized her around the throat.[break][break]
But then she turned the blade back on Nomi, and pierced deep.[break][break]
"They won't betray me," she answered firmly, her faith steadfast, with little room for doubt. "I offered them something the DRK Triad will never be able to give, and I did so sincerely."[break][break]
Crimson met emerald, and Nomi did not back down from Elisabeth's scrutiny.[break][break]
"But I will entertain your question, as is fair, considering I asked it of you." Kallistatus remained still, watching Elisabeth as if it were an extension of Nomi's own consciousness - which, in many ways, it was.[break][break]
"As you said yourself, information would be needed in order to make such a choice. I would need to know who else was vying for my attention - my loyalty - and why. I would weigh the pros and cons of both bonds, and decide what made the most sense - what would be the more mutually beneficial agreement."[break][break]
It was a scientific answer: one she knew would not offend the Unown. All the same, she glanced at Kallistatus, and because she was the one that loved them and not Holo, she added - [break][break]
"But right now? I am content, Underboss. The Unown are like family to me. So no, I would not trade them."

"I think so," Nomi replied, pleased with the result of their little experiment. "Every time I use my powers, it feels more...natural? Like they are an extension of myself."[break][break]
She remembered the first few days, how jarring and uncomfortable it had been - her vision constantly switching to her Unown unexpectedly or crystals manifesting out of nowhere if she lost control of her emotions. Now, she had a far greater understanding of her abilities, and what it meant to truly be a part of the Unown Collection. She had offered them a family, and it return, she had gained a profound link to the moment of creation, transforming her perspective on the definition of reality.[break][break]
Xenon's comment about the future piqued Nomi's interest.[break][break]
"I wonder what 500 years in the future will look like..." she contemplated, as Kallistatus blasted the Spiritomb with a HIDDEN POWER. Soon, the simulation began to ripple and fade once more, transferring them to another scenario.
