At first, all she saw was Eva.[break][break]
Resplendent, amicable, haloed in a hazy, dappled light. Nomi recognized her own relief reflected in Eva's gentle emerald gaze, the two of them realizing instantly that this was a far cry from the worst case scenario. She rose to meet her ally with a sudden giddy eagerness, stepping forward so that she, too, was fully visible.[break][break]
But then she saw the other woman, claw-tipped and narrow-eyed.[break][break]
Sudden memories of a spontaneous magma pool, a hateful golden smirk, a ruinous commitment to justice. Nomi faltered, chest tightening, a sudden mental whiplash threatening to topple her. She steadied beside King, Kallistatus appearing at her shoulder, and it was in that particular moment that she heard the shift in Eva, from soft waves against the shore to a raging tempest in a matter of moments. Rayquaza was not physically present, but its majesty was, lest anyone dare to forget who it had blessed with its favor.[break][break]
"He's with me," Nomi answered automatically, as if it were the most obvious explanation in the world.[break][break]
A familiar Charizard ambled into view, and Kallistatus bobbed up and down in rhythmic salute. The Unown were a network, their minds a collective memory. Any remaining doubt melted away, and Nomi understood who this woman was, remembering her face from ( - the news, social media, the broken and bleeding aftermath of some terrible confrontation - ) the back of a book she'd read cover-to-cover in a single day.[break][break]
"Hello Freya," she greeted pleasantly, masking the droplets of apprehension that continued to trickle from her heart. Something wasn't right, but it wasn't wrong, either. "Did you get my letter?"

The Unown were a living alphabet, a collection of linked minds. When they were physically together, they were at their most formidable, capable of rewriting reality itself. Should a single Unown find itself in danger, it could reach out to its fellow kin for aid through the network of connection that tied each letter together, stringing words into sentences into stories.[break][break]
And now they had an Avatar, who could further protect them, and who wanted, above all else, to untangle them from the influence of the DRK Triad.[break][break]
Kallistatus alerted Nomi to the distress signal of the Unown in Slateport, cornered in some dark back-alley. She teleported as close as she could get to its location, eventually finding herself in the lower district, half-curious and half-apprehensive as she followed after Kallistatus, allowing it to lead her swiftly forward.[break][break]
To Nomi's surprise, it wasn't some mysterious DRK Triad agent - or dangerous Pokemon - cornering the clearly terrified Unown, it was a relatively normal-looking young woman. Nomi blinked, cocked her head. The woman seemed pissed. Why would a random woman attack an Unown?[break][break]
"Excuse me," Nomi greeted, voice calm, if twinged with confusion. "What exactly is going on here?"

Nomi spared Palkia a glance, crimson eyes gazing up at it with a careful scrutiny. The draconic god still felt larger than life even though it had made itself manageable - twenty feet instead of hundreds - a mercy, perhaps.[break][break]
She nodded her head ever so slightly in respect, apprehension prickling the edges of her resolve. It wasn't that she feared Palkia; it was more a sense of tipping scales, of imbalance, of wariness regarding the effects bonding a creature untethered from the laws of spatial logic might have on a human woman.[break][break]
All gods are jealous and possessive beings, Elisabeth Fiorelli's voice hissed in the back of her mind.[break][break]
Memories flashed, then - a sudden pool of magma, golden eyes burning with hatred, a devotion to justice so fanatic it was ruinous. Had Illeana known? Nomi's jaw tightened, the only sign of the anger that bubbled beneath the surface of her otherwise calm demeanor.[break][break]
"I've been...better."[break][break]
Kallistatus drifted upwards, circling Palkia, its singular eye fixated on its fellow ancient. Vibrations seemed to reverberate around the shiny Unown-K, as if it were attuning to - or perhaps remembering - some long-lost modality of speech, a way of connecting to one of the few other beings in existence that knew a thing or two about bypassing the supposed limitations of physics in order to create new realities.[break][break]
"And you?"

Nomi fidgeted next to Parker, trying not to wring her hands. Her nervous energy was enough to irritate Valerian, who nudged her with his nose, letting out a huff of disapproval. It was the end of February, snow blanketing the park grounds, but it was also way too hot somehow. She tugged idly at the scarf around her neck.[break][break]
Nomi had fought the DRK Triad, she'd traversed space-time distortions, and she'd faced undead Megalopolians without batting an eyelash. But for some reason, the reality of meeting her girlfriend's little sister, in the flesh, finally, was enough to churn her stomach into knots. What if she hates me? and what if it's awkward? and also why wasn't she at the wedding - ?[break][break]
No, wait. What wedding?[break][break]
Kallistatus lurked, invisible, because Nomi had enough sense to know that you didn't bring your floating eyeballs - even your favorite floating eyeballs - to meet someone who had the power to look at the love of your life and declare, "Parker, you can do better." Would Avery actually say that? Was she as blunt as Parker? Arceus, she hoped not.[break][break]
"Parker, how much have you told her about me?"

Nomi's expression softened into one of sympathetic compassion at Howard's admission, academic fascination with the Tera crystals suddenly forgotten. She reached out and placed a hand over his own, a reassuring gesture.[break][break]

Kallistatus drifted away - perhaps affording Howard's vulnerability a measure of privacy - weaving between crystals to investigate the far wall of the cavern. The Unown had a talent for seeing things human eyes might miss, but Nomi ignored it, gaze still focused on her research partner.[break][break]
"The things we love can sometimes hurt us," she explained, tone gentle - if touched with an undercurrent of practicality. "Pokemon are not so different from us, I've found. They experience a range of emotions just like we do - joy, sadness, anxiety, and anger. Some Pokemon are more complex than others. The Unown, for example...they don't express their feelings as outwardly as other Pokemon do, but their inner world is a rich spectrum. So don't take Regice's rage so personally. Nomi hadn't known it was possible to be loved so thoroughly, so profoundly. She thought she'd dreamed it once, imagined she'd married the love of her life in some far-away cottage in the woods, and for some reason, this almost felt like that, even though they were in the same bed in the same apartment in the same city. As she moaned Parker's name loud enough for the neighbors above them to hear - thin ceilings be damned - it felt like they were two people entering into a sacred covenant, permanently entangled and wholly consumed.[break][break]
It was one thing to be dating, entirely another to be in love.[break][break]
This time, the idea of living on the sub made her laugh. Blissful ecstasy had flushed her cheeks a deep red, and she was half-occupied with running her hands greedily over Parker's immaculate biceps.[break][break]
"We're not going to live on the sub, silly," she replied, with a giggle that was also a sigh of pleasure. "We're going to get a house. It will have a cozy bedroom, a bigger kitchen, an office, a workout room, and a fancy shower. We'll make sure Maisey has the best sunny spot and I'll start a little garden on the balcony. Doesn't that sound nice?"

It didn't take her long to set everything up: a folding table, several collection kits, a compact radio device complete with satellite. It wasn't much of a research station, but it was serviceable. And, she hoped, somewhat hidden.[break][break]
The waterfall made for a rather ethereal backdrop; the thundering rhythm of cascading water a useful cover for the Rockets. Nomi flitted about taking samples of root, rock, and soil, muttering to herself excitedly and hastily scribbling notes in a field journal.[break][break]
"Keep watch," she'd requested of King, though she knew that Kallistatus could sense danger better than he could. All the same, the added protection was a comfort. The paradoxes that had emerged from the chasm during the altercation with Kyurem had been quite formidable - in numbers, they could do a great deal of damage. She'd rather not take any risks.[break][break]
Perhaps it was ironic, then, to be so consumed by the thrill of discovery - to be so sure the only threats were beasts and abominations. She knew the League government would swarm this place, but her Unown were keen on who could be trusted and who could not.[break][break]
But fate's web was intricate, colored grey with nuance.[break][break]
She felt the women approaching before she saw them. Kallistatus flickered into view, and Nomi glanced up to regard its demeanor. Calm...and perhaps curious? She cocked her head, pastel pink hair spilling over one shoulder.[break][break]
"There are people coming," Nomi called out to King. "Friendly, I think. But be ready."

Perhaps a different sort of young woman would be intimidated by a Rocket Underboss's direct request to accompany him on a mission - alone - but Nomi approached THEO BECKETT with a calm, pleasant demeanor, smiling politely at him when she arrived at the Great Chasm. The gaping maw of torn earth was a stain against an otherwise blank slate of icy white, the Silent Icelands no longer as serene as they'd once been, now marred with such a stark wound.[break][break]
"Underboss Beckett," she greeted back. At her shoulder, Kallistatus floated protectively, its shining blue body glinting in the sun, singular eye scrutinizing Theo.[break][break]
Nomi was close with Cillian Quinn, had a complicated relationship with Elisabeth Fiorelli, but she hardly knew the third Rocket Underboss. What did he want from her, exactly? Though she did not fear him, she wondered, with a small pang of curious apprehension, whether he'd somehow caught wind of her current endeavors with the League.[break][break]
She steeled herself, explanation prepared. She was a scientist, and a scientist didn't do anything without a purpose, a hypothesis worth testing.[break][break]
"I've been busy. But haven't we all?" She glanced at the chasm. "What with the endless supply of anomalies plaguing our home."[break][break]

A pang of anxiety threatened the bliss. For a half-second-too-long, Parker looked worried, and Nomi couldn't understand why. I don't live on the sub, she thought. And then - Parker should know better, she's seen my dormitory.[break][break]
"Not the - no - I mean - " She couldn't quite articulate it, fumbling to course-correct, but then Parker seemed to come to her senses and the moment passed.[break][break]
Nomi's wide crimson eyes, still ringed with the remnants of her earlier tears, gazed up at Parker, and the way the other woman was looking at her made Nomi's stomach do a weird little flip. It wasn't that Parker thought she was beautiful - because of course she did, that was obvious - it was that Parker thought her worthy.[break][break]
Worthy of her devotion. Worthy of her presence. Worthy of her love.[break][break]
Strawberry chapstick sounded familiar, but Nomi's brow furrowed slightly because she wasn't wearing any, as far as she could remember. She tasted her own lips, as if to check, but she didn't have much time to make any sort of determination - Parker had closed the gap again, and her kisses were feverish now, starving for some vital sustenance she could not live without.[break][break]
Moans of pleasure as Parker's mouth traveled down her neck, possessive marks that would bruise the next day, calloused hands traversing beneath the hem of a pleated skirt until they found the lace panties within - and all the while, Nomi could not stop thinking I love you I love you I love you which somehow made it better.

Something about Howard's words pinched a nerve in Nomi's brain, and a sudden hypothesis came to her like the ringing of a bell - sharp and clear and urgent.[break][break]
"Wait! Iron Thorns is one of the futuristic paradoxes," Nomi realized, fumbling to turn her revelation into an explanation Admin Bee and Howard could understand. "It reminds people of certain movies because it's...robotic. Like Sci-fi. But not all of them are like that. Scream Tail, for example, is organic: designed like a prehistoric version of a Jigglypuff."[break][break]
Her eyes were shining with excitement now, and she looked down at the book, mind whirling.[break][break]
"If there are really two types of paradoxes - two types of dreams people are having - future and past...then why is there only one book?"[break][break]
Her gaze flicked up to meet Admin Bee's then.[break][break]
"We're missing a piece of the puzzle," she whispered, heart pounding with excitement. "What if there's another book?"[break][break]
She pointed at the strange, futuristic Cyclizar clone on the cover of the Violet Book.[break][break]
"This one is futuristic. So where's the past one?"[break][break]

The excitement in Lulu's expression as she regarded the Unown, and considered their potential assessment of her machine, was a vast improvement over her once suspicious-bordering-on-fearful reaction to them. It warmed Nomi to witness the positive exchange, and her smile broadened as she opened the bag of Tera crystals.[break][break]
Nomi pulled out an obsidian-colored crystal, midnight black, reminiscent of the defunct Z-Crystals she'd recovered from Lesser Megalopolis...except the Tera crystal seemed to shine with an inner light: dark, but not dead. Then she grabbed for an amethyst-like crystal that seemed interwoven with a vast network of shimmering pink threads: brain waves of psychic energy pulsing through the stone.[break][break]
"Let's try this," Nomi offered, setting the two Tera crystals on either side of Lulu's machine. It was not an overly complicated device - the sleek design akin to the RKS Machine, Nomi realized - but she did not want to tamper with its inherent structural integrity by embedding the Tera crystals too deeply to start. When she was finished, she took out a Pokeball, releasing a second Unown: Alpha, who was already accustomed to Tera attunement.[break][break]
The living symbols hovered above the machine, ready to act.[break][break]
"Kallistatus is already attuned to the Dark shard," Nomi explained to Lulu. "Alpha can attune to Psychic, which should be a relatively quick process considering Psychic is the default typing of an Unown."[break][break]
Both Unown began to glow, sensing the Tera crystals below them. Their small bodies hardened and crystallized, and together, they began to channel Dark and Psychic energy into the machine.[break][break]
Nomi waited with bated breath, eager to see what would happen next.

Nomi felt cornered, despite the fact that she was standing in an open expanse. Something about PENELOPE LIVY's demeanor caused her to shrink back, an oppressive weight bearing down on her mind. She fought through the feeling, forcing her body to remain straight and her expression neutral. Wariness flooded her senses, even as the Councilwoman dressed her hostility in words of peace.[break][break]
If the other woman was trying to sound reasonable, it wasn't working.[break][break]
"The mask is a protective measure," Nomi answered carefully. "I would be a fool to openly declare my identity to someone who could easily arrest me for my affiliation with Rocket - unless I could trust her to put the fate of the region above the faction conflict."[break][break]
Her tone was matter-of-fact: the practical assessment of a seasoned scientist, weighing the various outcomes of her current experiment.[break][break]
The way the fiery magma seemed to caress Penelope's legs without burning her was not lost on Nomi.[break][break]
"How will you assure me that you won't come for me after, should I properly introduce myself to you?"

"Absolutely fascinating!" Nomi exclaimed, delighted. She clapped her hands together in excitement, crimson eyes shining. "I wish Parker were here to see this."[break][break]
She glanced at the surly man looming over her, undeterred by his somewhat imposing stature. It wasn't that she disliked KING WAYLAND - quite the contrary, she knew him to be a good man beneath the scowl - it was just that Parker was irreplaceable. Parker was hers.[break][break]
Nomi walked a few paces, Kallistatus floating dutifully after her. She surveyed the landscape, searching for a suitable location to start collecting soil samples. All around them, something akin to a rainforest poked and prodded its way out of the chasm's various cracks and crevices, a jarring contrast to the barren wasteland of ice and snow far above them. The air was thick with humidity, and Nomi could hear the soft trills of birdsong and the low buzzing of insect wings somewhere in the distance.[break][break]
"Ah! That looks perfect," she pointed, indicating a massive waterfall ahead. Leading up to it, there was an open expanse of grassy terrain - flat enough to set up her research equipment.[break][break]
"Bring all the stuff please!" She demanded of King, then promptly hurried off towards the waterfall, a sunshine-bright smile beaming across her face.[break][break]

Nomi joined Howard, careful not to rip her tights on any of the protruding crystal points as she knelt down beside him. All around them, softly glowing Tera crystals spread across the walls and ground like a beautiful infection, slowly creeping its way upwards, purposeful and potent and eager to grow. She'd never seen anything quite like it before, and her excitement combined with the energy of possibility coursing through the cavern like an electric current was causing her skin to prickle with anticipation.[break][break]
"It is truly remarkable," Nomi agreed, awed. She gently ran a fingertip over the smooth surface of one of the crystals, expression thoughtful. "If we continue downwards, do you think we will find some kind of...origin point?"[break][break]
Ominous words, considering Hoenn itself was supposedly an origin point for an impending disaster.[break][break]
Kallistatus floated closer to Howard, staring at him with its singular eye. It seemed less interested in the crystals and more intent on the man himself, as if waiting for him to do something. Nomi cocked her head curiously - but then, because of the bond that existed between them, she suddenly understood. Her laughter was musical as it spilled from her lips.[break][break]
"Kal wants you to release Regice," she explained. "I feel a...fondness emanating from it."[break][break]
