There it was, at last: Isaac's name, spat out like a curse. Nomi flinched as if physically struck by Parker's accusation.[break][break]
Ya don't need me.[break][break]
"You're wrong," Nomi snapped, crimson eyes ablaze with anguish. She turned to look at Parker, tears streaking down her cheeks.[break][break]
"I want you by my side! But you're afraid, Parker. Even though I've done it once already, you don't trust me to protect you."[break][break]
She shook her head, pink hair spilling about like cotton candy on a rampage through the nine circles of hell. Her cheeks were flushed now, small hands trembling as she balled them into fists.[break][break]
Had she not saved Parker once already from Cillian Quinn's wrath? Had she not proven to Parker how deep her bonds with Lulu Flint and jayden cross were? Did not Elisabeth Fiorelli owe her a debt, as much as she resented it? Wasn't Zev Harcourt's goal aligned with hers? Nomi was not some pushover nobody within Rocket's ranks. She might be taking risks, but declan walsh had lauded her personally for the creation of Tera orbs, had handed her the Meteno Deoxys core, had sent Rocket's Unown to her during her most desperate hour of need.[break][break]
"You want to know what I'm doing?" She continued, passion tangled up in grief. "I've been meeting with the League. Anyone who will listen - and some of them are listening, Parker."[break][break]
Eva Morales. illeana reyes. Navy. lam logan. Even Greyson Connors had relented, had sent Mîr to her in an act of reluctant good will. She did not have freya morningstar's answer yet, but she had a feeling that woman could be the bridge to reaching the commissioner's ear.[break][break]
"And when Rocket does notice what I'm doing - and they will, yes, of course they will - I know how I'm going to handle it. I'm going to tell them that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I'm going to remind them that there won't be a Hoenn to rule if it gets destroyed by a preventable apocalypse. I'm going to convince them that I'm manipulating the League, that it will only benefit us to learn their secrets in the midst of a ceasefire."[break][break]
Her whole body was shaking now. Her voice dropped to barely a whisper. Now the hard part, the only kindness she could offer Parker that might actually matter. With a sharp intake of breath, she held out the key to the shackles.[break][break]
"But you can walk away, if you want to. I can take you to the strongest people I know, on the other side. They'll protect you."[break][break]
Captain Dross is gone, but there are others like her. Isaac's one of them now.

She made it quick. For her own sake as well as Elisabeth Fiorelli's.[break][break]
All gods are jealous and possessive beings, the Underboss had declared, with such conviction. Nomi frowned as she capped and labeled the blood sample, then set it gingerly on a metal tray.[break][break]
The Unown did not feel like jealous, possessive creatures, but then again, they were not Gods in the traditional sense. They were the eyes of a God, an extension of Arceus's consciousness. They felt distinctly neutral to Nomi, detached and observant most of the time. It was her influence on them that gave them any semblance of human emotion, not the other way around.[break][break]
Still...all legendary Pokemon seemed to operate differently, some embodying - or perhaps feeding off of? - a single human emotion so completely, it was the very basis of their power. How did that work, exactly? Was it an adaptation that developed because of contact with humans over the centuries? There was still so much to learn about each legendary's nuances. If only she had the time.[break][break]
"And what, would you say, is their objective?"

They were ominous words. She knew that the Ultra Deep Sea was some sort of...extension of Eternatus, but the League seemed to have uncovered more information regarding the details of its nature than Rocket had. She'd been meaning to look into it, but there'd been several competing priorities.[break][break]
"What are you afraid of, exactly?" She asked softly. What did he know about Eternatus that she did not? "That it will attack Dewford at the behest of the DRK Triad?"[break][break]
Thus far, the beast seemed to be slumbering - or in some similarly dormant state. There were more immediate dangers, from her perspective, but if he had evidence of the DRK Triad's meddling...[break][break]
She had discussed the possibility of the DRK Traid attempting to harness the power of Eternatus with howard slayte, but the more interesting fact she had gleaned from that exchange had been the origins of his Regice: it had been born out of one of Eternatus's ribs. Where were the other automatons? Could someone like Navy help her find the others...? His loyalty to her cause was a thing she ought to take advantage of. Could she use it to help Rocket without perpetuating the faction conflict? Ultimately, doing so would keep more legendaries out of the DRK Triad's hands.[break][break]
Because he was right about one thing: the League was not her enemy.[break][break]
"There is something you can do, perhaps," she decided, thoughtful. "I cannot be everywhere at once, contrary to what some might think. I can have my Unown watch over the Ultra Deep Sea, keep an eye out for DRK Triad activity. But I have reason to believe there are other Pokemon - fragments of Eternatus - that we ought to find before the DRK Triad can, as well. Perhaps you can look for them."

"By all means," Nomi waved her hand in affirmation. "Take as many samples as you'd like. We can study its genetic makeup together."[break][break]
The university had cutting edge equipment, comparable to what she had access to on the Rocket submarine. It was Gideon's critical eye she valued more.[break][break]
The Scream Tail shuffled its feet, seemingly agitated by the prospect of having its blood drawn. Had it understood what they were talking about?[break][break]
"Have you spent much time in the Ultra Deep Sea, Professor?" She asked, keeping her tone casual - the usual notes of curiosity. "I've been there a few times now, through the university."[break][break]
Experienced scientific upperclassman who passed a series of tests were able to volunteer to accompany various folks - politicians, students in other departments, journalists, etc - into Hoenn's various anomalous rifts via The Rift Guide Program. Gideon would be familiar, she knew; it would not draw suspicion, though she had also visited several of the rifts with members of Team Rocket.[break][break]
And of course, there was the altercation that had taken place between her and Gideon in the Ultra Deep Sea recently...[break][break]

"Precisely," Nomi agreed, smiling. "I'll assign one of my labs to you. You'll have access to a full range of equipment. Submit to me a list of Pokemon you would like to experiment on, and I will procure them for you. There's not much Rocket cannot acquire."[break][break]
The Black Market was not her domain, but Admin fern delaney and others worked tirelessly to ensure Rocket was flush with resources. Legally or illegally, it was of no consequence. What mattered was progress.[break][break]
She stood, beckoning for Rhys to follow.[break][break]
"If you have the time, I will give you a tour of our facilities now. That way, you can select the space that would be most conducive to your research."[break][break]
Kudzu chimed as she zoomed over to Nomi, ready to serve should the Head Scientist need one of her keys. There were many locked doors on the Rocket submarine, but Nomi had access to nearly all of them.[break][break]
"People talk about Rocket as if we do not tolerate failure." Nomi eyed him, posture confident despite her small size. "But every decent scientist knows failure is a necessary part of the process. All you have to do is make progress, Rhys. If you do that, you will not disappoint me."[break][break]

Nomi was not offended by Nenet's musings; after all, it wasn't exactly common knowledge that the Unown were capable of bonding an Avatar. Nomi had not fully understood it until it had literally happened to her. The Unown were complex creatures: the building blocks of existence. Perhaps not legendary in the traditional sense, but certainly mythically unique.[break][break]
"A single Unown is a useful spy, but not particularly powerful," Nomi explained to Nenet. She looked up at the swirling Unown above them with fondness. "But together? Together, they can rewrite reality itself."[break][break]
They were a family, each one a letter of an age-old alphabet, each one having been present at the moment of creation. How connected they really were to Arceus was a mystery, one Nomi was intent on figuring out.[break][break]
"They've asked me to 'see to the end,'" she answered truthfully, though the statement was inherently cryptic. "The Unown that have allied themselves with me are those that oppose the DRK Triad's agenda. Kallistatus - " she nodded at the shining blue Unown-K that remained dutifully by her side. " - once belonged to a woman named Nisa Holo. It betrayed her to join me."[break][break]
It occurred to Nomi that Nenet may not fully understand who the DRK Triad were, and the threat they posed to Hoenn. That, too, was her mission: to spread the word. To gather Hoenn's forces. To create unity between Rocket and League for the purpose of their collective survival.[break][break]
"How much do you know about the DRK Triad?"

Nomi was no battle-hardened warrior, no champion of tournaments, no seasoned veteran. Even though she knew the DRK Triad was cunning, and had access to technology most Hoennians could only dream of, a sudden plume of magma was entirely unexpected, and she did not have the reaction time to avoid it entirely.[break][break]
"What - "[break][break]
The Unown saved her, teleporting her backwards before the rippling flames could eat her alive. A small crater formed in the ground, the snow and ice melted into a puddle of muddy liquid where her feet had once been standing. Adrenaline pumping, jacket singed and smoking, Nomi's head whipped around in the direction of the new voice - a woman's.[break][break]
Why had Kallistatus not alerted her? If Holo was - [break][break]
But where she expected to find keen peridot, she found only a blazing, molten gold.[break][break]
Councilwoman PENELOPE LIVY emerged from the shadows of a nearby thicket, wreathed in a thick haze of ENVIOUS rage. She stalked towards Nomi, expression a mask of cruel hostility. In the name of justice, this woman would hunt her enemies to the ends of the earth; so vivid was her fiery radiance against the grey backdrop of the snowy hillside, that she seemed to Nomi like the sun come to punish the moon for daring to shine as bright.[break][break]
This was not the DRK Triad, but the League's retribution.[break][break]
"The Coveted," Nomi greeted back, keeping her voice calm, though her heart hammered violently within her chest. "Surely you ought to know that I mean the League no harm. Quite the contrary, in fact."

There was no warning for the unsuspecting man and his Unown-A, no herald of her coming. A tear in the very fabric of reality simply opened up directly in front of him, and The Visionary stepped out.[break][break]
She was small - much shorter than he was - a rather unassuming figure dressed in black, unremarkable save for the Unown that flanked her: one was a shining blue the color of Tera crystals, the other a softly glowing illumina violet. Her pink hair was tied up in a long tail, her face obscured by a simple black scarf acting as a mask. It was cold enough that the layers made practical sense, serving both the purpose of hiding her true identity and keeping her warm.[break][break]
Supposedly, this man had been looking for her. His Unown had connected with hers, drawn her to him like metal to a magnet. She did not recognize his face, though she guessed he was some sort of League agent. She cocked her head at him, curious.[break][break]
"I am The Visionary," she greeted him pleasantly, voice only slightly muffled.[break][break]
He seemed nervous to her, on edge in a disconcerting way. Why was he sweating so much when the temperature in these highlands was quite chill? Nomi's crimson eyes narrowed. Something didn't feel quite right, but she couldn't figure out what. He looked harmless enough - certainly not DRK Triad.[break][break]
Though she supposed she couldn't be too careful. Her enemies were full of tricks.[break][break]
"I believe you have been looking for me?"[break][break]

Was it really pity that she felt? She flinched back from his accusation, though he had not necessarily raised his voice. All she had wanted to express was empathy.[break][break]
She couldn't blame him for his volatile emotions, however. These things could be quite painful, and the Unown had brought him here without much warning. Some turbulence was to be expected, perhaps.[break][break]
Nomi watched the scene evolve once more, observing as the elderly gentleman carried away the child Amor from the destruction of his home. Her brow furrowed as the boy screamed with an agonized rage. Was it really weakness? He clearly had the courage. One could not force strength where it had not yet developed. The spirit might be willing, but the body...he had only been a boy.[break][break]
"You're not weak," she said, voice firm. "You weren't then, and you aren't now."[break][break]
Having emotions...remembering painful memories...that wasn't weakness. Not from her perspective.[break][break]
"Perhaps we should go back now...?" She offered. The Unown swirled around her, as if sensing her desire to return home.

Was she sure?[break][break]
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, but she willed them not to fall. She sniffed, stared up at the ceiling, feeling like it might fall down on top of her if she didn't keep an eye on it.[break][break]
Every time she'd confronted a member of the League, she'd done so with poise, and the unshakeable confidence of a resolute prophet traveling down an enlightened road. She had never second-guessed her calling, because what had there been to second-guess? When the Unown had chosen her, she'd felt them in her soul. Like a tuning fork, she'd resonated with them, understood them: how lonely they had been, and how imperative it was that she do something with their gift.[break][break]
Opposing the DRK Triad had felt like the right path. The only path. Kallistatus had chosen her over Holo. Didn't that mean something?[break][break]
"I didn't - " she started, then took a breath. Then another. Was she hyperventilating? "I didn't know they would make me their Avatar. I just...I just tried to love them."[break][break]
Does love make us weak, Isaac?[break][break]
Parker's accusations pricked her like needles; she flinched away, because yes, Rocket had done that to FERNANDO SILPH. He'd lived, but at what cost?[break][break]
"I know I'm not immortal," she hastily agreed. "I know I can be killed."[break][break]
Nothing Nomi had done thus far had felt particularly reckless, however - an ankle injury on a battlefield was par for the course. Nobody had attacked her directly; Holo hadn't even tried to since that fateful day in the RKS Machine. Holo feared her now, of this she was certain.[break][break]
But, she knew there were risks. Most of all, she knew Parker thought there were risks.[break][break]
