Nomi watched as Illeana greeted Alpha with an unmistakable fondness, as if she were familiar with the Unown in a way most people were not. Interesting, Nomi thought, wondering if the other scientist had her own collection of them back at her labs. That could prove usful as Nomi continued to endear herself to the Unown.[break][break]
Alpha spun around Illeana with equal friendliness. Nomi giggled, amused.[break][break]
"Alpha likes you," she noted, smiling.[break][break]
They walked along the beach, Illeana's ovreall equipment load lessened by Nomi's assistance. Sweat beaded at Nomi's forehead - physical strength was not her expertise - but she tried not to let the the strain show on her face.[break][break]
"Nothing terribly substantial, but I have started to draw connections between the Tera Crystals and the Dream Mist that plagues the Ultra Deep Sea." She paused. "I assume you've been?"[break][break]
They were not far from the entrance, after all.[break][break]
At the mention of League labs, Nomi's eyes widened with a sudden eagerness. "Oh yes! That would be quite helpful, indeed. The University labs are well-stocked, but access to government-sanctioned research and equipment would be most appreciated." She glanced at the other woman with curious eyes. "What are you working on right now, if I may ask?"

She ought not get Parker into any trouble with Elisabeth, not after the terrible experience her girlfriend had endured with Cillian Quinn. "Just a rumor I heard," Nomi shrugged, trying to sound casual. "Regardless, it's a clever tactic. Manipulating the Silphs strikes me as something you'd be well-equipped to handle. I tried my best to wheedle information out of Fernando, but I'm not nearly so eloquent as you are with, er..."[break][break]
She glanced at Elisabeth. How could she put this?[break][break]

The man's tone changed in an instant, causing Nomi to cock her head, crimson eyes alight with curiosity. Oh? How very personal.[break][break]
So much hatred for the League festered within the heats of her colleagues. Some merely viewed dahlia goode's government as incompetent, others had long-standing vendettas against specific League members. Based on Rhys's use of the word "joke", she figured it might be the former...but the vehemence by which he'd rejected the notion of working in a League hospital left Nomi wondering exactly what he'd experienced in the past.[break][break]
All the same, it seemed he was committed to their cause.[break][break]
"No apologies necessary," she commented lightly. "We all have our reasons for being here."[break][break]
She did not press further, content for the time being.[break][break]
"So!" She clapped her hands together eagerly, just as Kudzu popped the bubble directed at her by the Goomy. "Tell me about your experiments - have you had much success? And what do you hope to accomplish next?"

Nomi shut her mouth. Shut it so hard she bit her tongue, tasted the metallic tang of blood on the back of her teeth. Parker had - (has?) - a sister? Had she known that?[break][break]
You found a family here, Nomi, but me? Rocket killed mine.[break][break]
These were the moments that shaped a person, sent them down a specific trajectory, nudged them right or left when faced with a crossroads. People only ever saw the brilliant mind behind the pretty face, never the trauma that lurked within a padlocked heart. In that moment, Nomi realized with a harrowing sorrow that she had never once asked Parker why she had joined Rocket.[break][break]
And Parker had never asked her.[break][break]
"Rocket killed my family too," Nomi said, and it could have been vitriol, it could have been a snappish comeback meant to sting. But it wasn't. Nomi's body sagged forward, shoulders slumping, and she was surprised to find she still had tears left to shed.[break][break]
"I'm an orphan, Parker. I have no living family that I know of. My parents were scientists murdered by their own test subjects in Kanto, where they were working for the Rocket regime."[break][break]
Her voice sounded far away to her own ears, like a muffled radio. Her head buzzed with the memories of her parents' bodies, mangled in pools of their own blood, a scene that Cillian Quinn had witnessed in person and had carried with him to Hoenn in the luggage that was his own trauma. Parker did not need to know that detail: she was not in the right headspace to understand that he, too, had lived through tragedy.[break][break]
"So don't talk to me as if I do not understand what Rocket is, Parker. Don't judge me for choosing to love the people I love." You included. "I joined Rocket to find out what happened to my parents, and I found Isaac Merlo and jayden cross and Lulu Flint instead. I found you. Eventually, their fates were revealed to me, and you know what?"[break][break]
Nomi swallowed, feeling small. She forced herself to look Parker in the eyes.[break][break]
"All it did was make me realize that if I'm going to die, then it better actually mean something."

Something changed in Jack's expression at the mention of family: a tired sorrow transformed into real grief, and Nomi's eyes widened as she realized that perhaps Jack had lost more than just a physical home.[break][break]
"Jack, did they - ?"[break][break]
She did not get the chance to ask, however, as the Ranger suddenly stepped in front of her, shielding her from the violent emergence of a Heatran from the dream mist-constructed Galarian rubble. Nomi would have been more startled had she not encountered such creatures already with Zev Harcourt. She backed up instinctively, however, watching Jack's Doublade leap to their defense. Kallistatus hovered beside her, turning to look at her with its singular eye, questioning whether it should assist.[break][break]
Last time a Heatran had blocked her path, she'd run. Granted, there had been several of them...with just one, perhaps they could defeat it or even attempt to catch it?[break][break]
Before she could make her decision, however, the Heatran made it for her: it began to glow with a white hot power, magma pooling beneath its clawed feet. Recognizing the signs of a MAGMA STORM, Nomi quickly beckoned for Jack's Doublade to return to them.[break][break]
"Kallistatus can get us out of here," she assured her friend. Gripping onto his arm, she waited until his Pokemon was by his side, then turned to the shiny Unown-K.[break][break]
I'm going to teleport us out, she told it through their telepathic link. Jack would be none the wiser: it would appear as if the Unown was doing the work of teleporting them. But in reality, Kallistatus and Nomi would need to work together to bring Jack and his Pokemon with them.[break][break]
In the blink of an eye, all four of them disappeared, reappering moments later on the beach near where Nomi had originally landed on the island. Sweat beaded at her forehead, but she turned to regard Jack with a concerned expression - more for him than for herself.[break][break]
"Everyone allright?"

Celebi? Nomi blinked. No, she had not seen Celebi.[break][break]
Isaac continued on before she could ask about it, however, and Nomi froze as he said something that - had her heart not already been broken by his defection - would have shattered it.[break][break]
I know you loved me, once.[break][break]
"Loved you once?" She shouted, a sudden hot rage spilling out of her like molten lava. The audacity! The assumption. Did he really think of her that way?[break][break]
She ought to have seen the signs, anticipated the outcome - but just like the last time she'd been blindsided by information about Isaac, Nomi began to lose control of her emotions.[break][break]
In response, reality began to change. The Unown were her family. They would will into existence what her heart desired, for good or for ill.[break][break]
All around Isaac Merlo and his Crobat, cloud wisps began to transform into shimmering blue crystal, the color of Kallistatus. Just like in Parker's bedroom so many days ago, the crystals reacted to Nomi's unbridled anger, forming into deadly spikes with razor-sharp edges rather than innocuous gemstones. Their smooth surfaces - akin to Tera Crystals - were beautiful, but they carried with them an imminent threat of violence, should Isaac fail to choose his next actions - and words - wisely.[break][break]
"Of course I love you STILL," Nomi sobbed, tears welling. "I could never hate you, Isaac! That's why I'm angry. You were willing to die for one Rocket prisoner? After what we had JUST been through, with Holo?" More crystals appeared around Nomi, haloing her in an ethereal light. "You promised me you'd stay. You promised me you'd fight. How can you defend Hoenn if you're constantly on the run? How can you save this region if - "[break][break]

Stepping foot onto the surface of Meteno. It was my first time in space, my first time going anywhere outside of our planet. I cannot put into words the awe I felt in that moment.

What an unnecessarily dramatic question. What might be considered a "sin" is entirely subjective. It is imperative that we always make choices based on what will be most beneficial for the majority of people. To dwell on ethics can lead to delays in decision making, which can have even more costly repercussions. Right now it is more important than ever to consider what will be best for our entire region.
Survey #5 - Who or what 3 objects would you bring with you if you were stuck on a deserted island?

parker jones, of course. We'd have a good time before I'd inevitably teleport us off the island.

I have no living family that I know of. I've since chosen a new family, which includes two men and a woman I've come to think of as siblings. Our relationships are quite strong, and I am incredibly grateful for them.

Nomi watched Parker unravel. She knew that, if unchecked, this would lead to more bruised knuckles and bloody fingernails: Parker's fist through a wall (again), or perhaps the bedside table, or maybe even the bathroom mirror. Nomi could picture the splintering shards of glass as they hit the tile floor, could hear them shattering.[break][break]
"You can," Nomi insisted, keeping her voice relatively calm, acutely aware of the fact that any change in her emotions might be the catalyst of a transformation that, given a second chance, might not leave Parker's apartment in a liveable state. "But you won't."[break][break]
It was a technicality, but it felt like an important one. Something just wasn't adding up.[break][break]
"I know you don't agree with everything Rocket does, Parker. I know there's a part of you that would kill to do what Isaac's just done. So why do you fight me on this? I'm giving you a chance to do something better. Isn't that what you want of me?"[break][break]
She knew there were unvoiced sentiments: the human experiments, her closeness with Cillian Quinn, her dedication to Rocket's undeniably violent takeover initiatives - hell, even her relationship with the Unown - all of it displeased Parker, to varying degrees. If Parker was going to remain chained to Rocket, primarily because of Nomi, why did she refuse to give Nomi an inch on the very altruistic matter of Isaac's continued existence?[break][break]
Not to mention the whole saving the world business.

Nomi, too, had cleared obstacles to arrive here: some animate, some inanimate. Having escaped the Heatran, she eventually parted ways with Zev Harcourt, only to end up in another section of the cave system below the island.[break][break]
She exited a tunnel, Kallistatus hovering behind her, and found herself in an open expanse, noticing the shimmering purple tendrils of dream mist caressing her ankles like a lover's groping fingertips almost immediately upon entering.[break][break]
She stopped, sucked in a breath. A measure of caution was warranted. She was well acquainted with the dangers of dream mist.[break][break]
She'd also realized that she could...communicate with it. In a sense. From one reality altering substance to another.[break][break]
The shifting of pebbles, a subtle sound, but one that might indicate movement. Nomi pressed herself to the cave wall, and motioned for Kallistatus to scout ahead. The shiny Unown-K did so, its small form melting into the shadow. Nomi switched her vision so that she was looking through its singular eye.[break][break]
Yes, there did seem to be a human-shaped figure ahead. But who?

The elegant Pheromosa's QUIVER DANCE gave her a boost of unexpected speed. Kallistatus's HIDDEN POWER missed by inches, and the Unwon-K bobbed in the air in annoyance as debris kicked up around it from where the energy had hit the ground. Ahead of it, the shiny Nihilego proceeded forward, unhindered. It did not seem interested in its fellow Ultra Beast; no, it had a different plan in mind.[break][break]
Nomi switched her vision so that she was looking through Kallistatus's eye, which helped her see the makeshift battlefield better. What is Datura doing? She wondered, watching as the otherworldly sea creature ignored the Pheromosa. It whipped its tentacles forward, lightning quick, seeking a different target.[break][break]
And then Nomi understood.[break][break]
It's going to try and poison the trainer.[break][break]
She smiled, intrigued.

Nomi could sense, through her bond with the Unown, that Alpha was in imminent danger of sustaining a critical hit. She grit her teeth, too far away to do much on her own.[break][break]
But luckily for Nomi, she was never alone. Not anymore.[break][break]
The Unown were a collective. A family. Because of this, Nomi was not the only one aware of the Magneton's deadly LOCK-ON. The rest of the scattered Unown began to coalesce around the Terastallized Unown-A. They linked together, forming a singular unit. Multiple eyes stared down at FERNANDO SILPH, regarding him as if he were nothing more than an inconsequential pebble in their path. Together, they charged a myriad of HIDDEN POWERS, glowing as bright white as their Ice Type comrade.[break][break]
Not even a few weeks ago, Nomi was having an engaging scientific debate with this man in the midst of a joyous carnival. How quickly the tides had turned.[break][break]
From the shore, Nomi thought, we could have been colleagues. It would do more good for Hoenn than this.[break][break]
The irony was not lost on her, given his dedication to saving the region. He had no way of knowing who he was fighting, of course. But still.[break][break]
It was, perhaps, something of a shame.

Nomi couldn't help but smile behind her mask. Though the expression was mostly hidden, her crimson eyes still sparkled with amusement.[break][break]
For nuance's sake. Cheeky man.[break][break]
Nomi was not known for her battle prowess. She was a scientist first and foremost. So it was that the man's quick-witted decision making caught her by surprise: the attacks she had been anticipating did come, just not for the expected targets.[break][break]
Kallistatus was fast. The shiny Unown-K was battle-hardened, having once belonged to Nisa Holo of the DRK Triad. It disappeared in the blink of an eye, the FIRST IMPRESSION missing by less than inches. Kallistatus reappeared directly above the Slither Wing, sending a DARK TERA BLAST downwards in hopes of hitting it.[break][break]
Python was not so lucky. The NIGHT SHADE engulfed the Iron Jugulis in midnight energy, and it shrieked in mechanical pain. Mouths opened, and all three of its heads began to charge: an electric TRI-ATTACK would aim for the Murkrow - and, by proxy, the man it perched upon - but the attack was generating slower than Nomi would have liked, due to the damage Python had endured.[break][break]
"You're good," Nomi complimented her adversary, meaning it. "One of the League's best, I presume." She paused, eyes finding the cave entrance once more. She shifted forward ever so slightly. "I cannot claim to be anything more than an average battler, but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve."[break][break]
If it came down to it, she could always teleport away.

Nomi tried her best to look as concerned as Jack sounded, but inwardly, she felt a thrill at the mention of Ranger reports. She had no intentions of hurting her friend, but taking advantage of the Rangers as an organization? She wasn't above doing that.[break][break]
"Yes, do let me know if you hear anything from your colleagues about the energy source," she emphasized, coloring her tone with gratitude. "But you're right, this place is dangerous. We should try and find a way out."[break][break]
She followed his gaze as he took in their surroundings once more. The sorrowful look in his eyes was not lost on Nomi. As he talked about Galar, and his recent return there, she moved closer and gently rested a hand on his arm as if to comfort him.[break][break]
"I'm sorry," she murmured, meaning it. "I hope your family's okay."[break][break]
She, too, was familiar with a wartorn Galar...but not this one. She now had her answer: this was their universe's Galar, not the Galar she'd visited during the conflict at the Ancient Tomb. It was no less horrific a revelation, however: what had happened in the memories she'd visited were clearly part of a devastating pattern that plagued that region.[break][break]
Hoenn was not the only place suffering from the instability of their particular universe, it seemed.[break][break]
Rubble shifted nearby, and Nomi glanced in the direction of the sound. Was there someone else here?[break][break]
"Jack, did you hear that?"
