He ducked through the portal with the grace and poise of a prowling Persian, ready to pounce on the unsuspecting Rangers. She waited a few moments to give him a head start deploying his attack, then followed after him. As she stepped through the dimensional door onto the beach, she saw that Admin Bee and his Iron Bundle had successfully frozen the Rangers with a surprise ice attack. Once she and Kallistatus were through, the rip in reality closed up, as if nothing strange had ever been there at all.[break][break]
Maybe I can eventually figure out how to keep the doors open longer, she thought. An experiment for another time, however.[break][break]
She took out a Pokeball and released Spirulina. The Scream Tail promptly began to SING, directing the song at the already-impeded Rangers. The three of them fell to the ground, unconscious. Nomi patted Spirulina on the head, pleased with the Paradox's growing obedience.[break][break]
"Let's gather their equipment," Nomi suggested to the Admin. "That way, when they wake up, they'll have no way of contacting their peers."[break][break]
And with the help of her Unown, perhaps she and Bee would be able to listen into any further League communications coming from the radios.[break][break]
Nomi had never doubted her usefulness to Rocket - her position of authority had been fairly earned - but she had to admit, it did feel good to be able to make an impact with her newly acquired gifts. It was further proof that the Unown trusted her...and that's what mattered most, in the end.[break][break]
It meant she might be able to win them all to her side: even the ones still allied with the DRK Triad.[break][break]
She just hoped they wouldn't run out of time before she could do so.

Nomi breathed deeply, the events of the day - and all of the various ways she'd been using her powers - beginning to wear on her. Luckily, Jack did not seem to notice that she'd been involved in their expedient retreat to the beach, silently praising her Unown instead, so earnest in his expression that it made her smile despite her exhaustion.[break][break]
"I'll head home," she lied, nodding along as he outlined the dangers to her in a well-meaning tone. "Do send along anything of note. I'm eager to study whatever energy seems to be manifesting here."[break][break]
She might need to regroup now, but at least she'd secured a Ranger's intel. That counted for something, right?[break][break]
When he mentioned getting a beer, she felt a pang of guilt: Jack had always enjoyed her brewery. How would she explain to him that she'd needed to sell it? All the same, it still existed...they could meet there sometime, even if it would be somewhat bittersweet for her.[break][break]
"A beer sounds nice," she murmured, a mirror of his own frown melting from her face as she attempted to rally. Waving goodbye, she watched him become a speck in the distance, and she hoped, for all their sakes, that whatever they were doing here ended up mattering.

Nomi gazed out at the turbulent sea, distant storm clouds greying the sky with the promise of rain. Behind her, the city of Sootopolis shadowed them with its storied history. Beside her, Kallistatus the shiny Unown-K hovered, ever vigilant - her constant companion. And on her other side...[break][break]
"Thank you for agreeing to accompany me," Nomi said to the newly minted Beast, raising her voice so it could be heard over the howling wind. "My Unown tell me that Kyogre was last spotted right outside our very own city. How fortuitous, wouldn't you say?"[break][break]
She turned to face her companion. Pastel pink hair whipped around her face, and though she was small in stature, she cut a rather impressive figure as she stood on the deck of the ship.[break][break]
"Hopefully - " she added pleasantly, " - our good fortune will continue. After all, the presence of a rogue legendary ripe for new Avatarship ought to draw out the DRK Triad."[break][break]
She flashed him an innocent smile.[break][break]
"In fact, I am banking on it."

"I suspect Admin Bee will be pleased to hear about what I can do," she noted with a small laugh, thinking of their head of intelligence. "But you know me too well: I could never stop being a scientist."[break][break]
Without further delay, Nomi turned to the small group of Unown floating before her.[break][break]
"Allright, everyone. Scatter about the island: look for the League, and look for signs of the DRK Triad. Anything suspicious or supernatural in nature would also be of interest. I will check in with each of you over the next hour." She paused. "Kal, stay with me. I want you watching our backs."[break][break]
The Unown popped out of existence one by one, traveling through their dimension to various points across the island. Nomi's eyes flashed white as she looked through their eyes, switching between thick, luscious jungle, rocky shores, the mouths of caves, and various boats at sea. Beside her, the shiny Unown-K called Kallistatus remained, dutiful in its vigilance.[break][break]
"Jungle, shore, cave, sea..." Nomi rattled off the list of locations to Cillian. "I can see it all, Cillian."[break][break]
She smiled at the man standing across from her even as her gaze was far-away, observing the wider world around them as easily as breathing.[break][break]
"Now all that's required is patience."

Maybe the fact that Isaac could disappear right into the wind ought to have shocked her, but Nomi had seen the birth of the universe: her brain was far more willing to accept the impossible than it had been prior to her Avatarship.[break][break]
All the same, she froze. Time seemed to stand still. Her heart hammered in her chest, so loud she was sure the world below could hear it, even from such a height. Isaac's arms were wrapped around her in a tight embrace, and the low candor of his all-too-familiar one-of-a-kind voice was whispering words of sorrow and sincerity and love and it just. Wasn't. Fair.[break][break]
I've never been strong like you, Nomi.[break][break]
The chiming of the crystals crescendoed, building and building until there was a great shattering. Sparkling dust rained down upon Nomi and Isaac and their Pokemon, covering them unceremoniously in supernatural glitter. Tears streamed down Nomi's cheeks as he held her.[break][break]
And I guess the universe agreed, because it couldn't let me die.[break][break]
"I can't do this without you," Nomi sobbed, and finally - because she was only human, after all - she allowed herself to hug him back, hands balling fistfuls of his jacket, body trembling violently. "I can't stop the Triad, I can't stop Arceus, I can't stop the next Meteno - I can't stop ANY of it alone. I don't care if you're Rocket or League or something else entirely - I need you on my side, Isaac. I need you to live."[break][break]
She pulled back to look at him, sniffling as she regarded all of the ways he had changed - from the physical differences to the subtleties in how he carried himself and it struck her that he looked lighter somehow. Unburdened.[break][break]
"What does Suicune call you?" She asked quietly, already knowing the answer.[break][break]

Nomi felt a pang of guilt at the sight of Lulu's crestfallen expression, the way her smile faded into a mask of neutrality that Nomi was all too familiar with: after all, she schooled her own face in such a way when she didn't want people to know how much emotional turmoil she was feeling.[break][break]
"As you wish," Nomi assured her, bowing her head slightly in apology - a custom she still carried with her from Johto. "You've always been Lulu to me, anyway."[break][break]
She watched Lulu make for the door, realizing the other woman intended to march right over to the RKS Machine and get started. It would be amusing, if Nomi did not understand that Lulu was a workaholic precisely because anything otherwise would force her to confront darker, lonelier realities.[break][break]
"Actually," Nomi blushed. "I have plans. I'm supposed to be meeting someone soon. My - " she paused. Well, what was the harm in it? "My girlfriend, Parker." She grinned stupidly, the sudden thought of Lulu and Parker meeting someday sending a happy thrill through her. "I'll introduce you sometime."[break][break]
She joined Lulu at the door.[break][break]
"But we can go tomorrow, first thing."[break][break]
She'd keep that promise too.

Through Kallistatus, Nomi watched the Golurk emerge. A precious split-second of foresight: she scrambled forward, hands fumbling for the nearest stalagmite as the earth began to shake beneath her feet. Everything trembled, rocks falling from the ceiling in massive clumps. Nomi covered her head with one hand even as she held on tight to her makeshift cover, the pillar cracking with a groan but, blessedly, refusing to crumble.[break][break]
When the dust cleared, Nomi coughed, switching back to her own eyesight to attempt to get her bearings. Kallistatus, forced to retreat, disappeared and reappeared at Nomi's side in the blink of an eye. Though the stalagmite she'd clung to had survived the onslaught, most had not...when she peered out into the middle of the cavern, she could see a clear path from one end to the other. The Golurk's silhouette shadowed the far wall.[break][break]
The voice that called out to her was...familiar, she realized. Heart racing from the sudden EARTHQUAKE, Nomi frantically tried to remember where she'd heard it before. A woman...someone she'd spoken with recently...[break][break]
Illeana Reyes, League head scientist. It's a pleasure to meet you, Naomi.[break][break]
Time seemed to stand still, Navy's question from their recent encounter - a pointless delay wrapped up in an equally pointless conflict - ringing in her mind, loud and clear: Aren’t we supposed to be enemies?[break][break]
"My enemy is the DRK Triad," she'd said to him.[break][break]
The truth of it.[break][break]
In one fluid motion, Nomi stepped out from behind the stalagmite. She faced illeana reyes, League Head Scientist, and in a loud, calm voice, she greeted her.[break][break]
"You're right. Hiding won't help me. Neither will fighting." Nomi paused, held out her hands. Beside her, Kallistatus hovered, equally exposed.[break][break]
"I just want to talk."

Aurelie's enthusiasm was rather adorable, Nomi had to admit. She couldn't help but smile as the other woman began to ramble on about what they might make together. She ought to have been a scientist, Nomi thought, not for the first time.[break][break]
It's the kind of thing you can only do after you sacrifice your best friend...[break][break]
Nomi looked away, trying to hide the sorrowful expression that passed briefly across her face. What she'd gained in power, she'd lost in Isaac Merlo's continued allegiance to Rocket. So, in a sense, Aurelie wasn't wrong. The Unown had blessed Nomi because she had offered them a family...even as her human family seemed to be dwindling...[break][break]
"I'll tell you the story sometime," Nomi murmured, remembering that her report had only been shared with Rocket leadership, not the average Grunt. "The truth is that Avatarship is still something of a mystery, even to me. Why are certain people chosen over others? All I know for sure, is that I love them...the Unown, I mean."[break][break]
Kallistatus drifted over to her as she said it, as if drawn to her affection. She reached out a hand instinctively to pat it on its symbolic head.[break][break]
Nomi listened as Aurelie tried to make a connection between the constellations and her experience in Motostoke. Sadly, there were very few conclusions to draw. Nomi frowned...it seemed they'd reached another dead end.[break][break]
"Well...I suppose the first thing we should do is try and gather as much Infinity Energy as we can, and then see if we can forge anything with it." Nomi crouched down, holding out a hand to one of the black crystals on the ground before her. If she tried to touch it, she had a feeling her hand would pass right through. After all, their surroundings - however realistic - were simply recreations of the dream mist.[break][break]
"We need some of these crystals, I think," Nomi concluded. Then her head snapped up, eyes widening. "And I think I know where we can find some! Aurelie, have you been to Lesser Megalopolis yet?"[break][break]
As she mentioned it, the scenery around them began to change once more, morphing into the bleak, midnight landscape of that otherwordly realm.

In the end, they managed to gather a handful of Tera shards: but only ten of the eighteen types. Angelo was the one to finally encourage a break, realizing that it had grown quite late in the day (hard to tell when you're underground, admittedly). Reluctantly, Nomi agreed to head back to the mouth of the cave, not far from where she'd first encountered him.[break][break]
There was so much she wanted to say...so many memories dancing just out of reach. She felt oddly compelled to tell Parker all about her encounter, even though there was no logical reason why the other woman might care about some random explorer Nomi had run across while digging for "weird crystals" so long as she came home in one piece. Nomi just had the weirdest feeling that Parker might know him...or know of him? Something like that.[break][break]
"Well, perhaps we'll get a chance to work together again," Nomi said as she breathed in the cool air outside the cave, stars winking down on them from above. "And give my regards to your wife."[break][break]
It wasn't until much later that Nomi realized angelo vestri had never mentioned anything about having a wife.

"I do," Nomi confirmed. "I have been spending quite a bit of time with them lately."[break][break]
A full set of Unown was a very dangerous thing, indeed. Did Lulu realize just how dangerous? Given that it pleased Nomi to see her mentor warming up to just one Unown, she decided she didn't need to belabor that point just now.[break][break]
"When it comes to the Unown, anything is possible," she settled on instead. "We could certainly attempt to ask them to take us to the Cloud...see if it gets us anywhere." She glanced at Nu, thoughtful as ever. "But let me take you into the RKS Machine first. I think you will find it extremely interesting."[break][break]
She paused, shuffling her feet slightly. A sudden awkward silence fell over the two women.[break][break]
"I really am glad you're back," Nomi murmured. "Saoirse."[break][break]
She said the name softly, with a great deal of reverence, like a prayer.[break][break]
"He told me...well, that's not true. I guessed, based on research I did after he told us his real name. I'll continue to call you Lulu, if you'd like..." Nomi blushed a little, hoping she hadn't offended the other woman. "But I just...it's good to know the real you."

The silence was deafening. Nomi breathed deeply, tasting tears and blood and sweat on her tongue. Kallistatus floated closer as if drawn to the sudden intensity of her longing. She didn't look at the Unown, though. She only had eyes for Parker, who's expression was so stubborn, so exhausted, so heartbreakingly resolute it finally dawned on Nomi that maybe, just maybe, this woman really, truly loved her.[break][break]
Nomi glanced down at Parker's left hand, as if expecting to see a ring there, but all she saw was bruises and swollen knuckles: reminders of Parker's promise to always be the protector. Her protector.[break][break]

"Come here," Nomi requested softly. She held out her arms needily, feeling much younger - and far more vulnerable - than a Rocket Head Scientist intent on saving the world ought to feel.[break][break]
