Language is not among the gifts bestowed upon Pokémon by the gods. When Lucia speaks to the tall Iron Valiant, all he can offer her is a curt nod. Girls, young and old, human and Gardevoir, always made him shy. It makes him seem stoic and reserved, but Navy knows the truth. His iron knight simply doesn’t know how to take a compliment. [break][break]
“He says thanks.” Navy translates for Roland despite the latter not saying a word. Roland takes his place on the beach, watches the waves, and waits. So still is the knight that one might think he has powered down - still as the grave, still as a windless sea. [break][break]
Wavecrest’s arrival in all her fury sends him into motion. The electricity he disperses across the sands activates his quark drive. A black orb flashes in Navy’s hand and it is soon thrown. It flies true and crystals consume Roland. Within the tera, he sees a familiar world of ionizing ideals. He grasps for power with his one arm and emerges changed. An electric current runs down his arm, all the way to his blade’s edge. A flick of that blade sends a thunderbolt falling from the heavens. It lands amidst the wave and splits it down the middle, sword held high in challenge. [break][break]
“We don’t wanna hurt ya.” Navy drawls. “But if you’ve got some energy you wanna fight off, be our guest. Either way, you’re gonna listen to Lucia and Hero.” Roland looks to Hero, wondering what the heroic bug will do next.

“You’re all very brave. Thanks for keepin’ your trainer safe.” His hand balls into a soft fist and thumps against his chest, a warrior’s salute. Some might say they’re not much to look at, but they survived hell, and that makes them mighty. [break][break]
“We’ll probably see ‘em again eventually. That’s just how things work around here. I hope they’re happy, and that they’re keeping those Megalopolins safe.” Those same Megalopolins that would happily feast upon their flesh. For now, so long as they stick to their own, Navy has no quarrel with them.[break][break]
“It seems like they were kidnappin’ people at random after they snatched all the big wigs – unless you’ve got some big reveal comin’ that your folks played a big part in the Three Days War.” He laughs a light, awkward laugh. With how connected everything and everyone seems to be, he wonders if his pickaxe accidentally struck gold.

Hattori, who put aside the portable console with worry as tensions in the room grew, looks up at the one to whom he has sworn loyal service and smiles. He moves from Navy’s seat at once.[break][break]
“Go on over to my chamber, little buddy. I’ll take it from here.” He smiles a tired smile down at the Greninja, who nods and disappears into the shadows. A baby Skarmory lands on the table in front of him, chirping. Its blue eyes turn and take in the sight of all these important people, gathered in one place to decide the fate of the world. If Hoenn falls, other regions will collapse within the year.[break][break]
“It won’t take long and they’ll be making a push up 102 and 104.” And beyond that, Rustboro and Oldale. Two more cities, ripe for capture in Rocket’s eyes. “We coordinate local ranger and military forces. Wish CIAN MAHER and Hideo Kino were here, since it’s their towns that’ll be in danger.”[break][break]
He looks to freya morningstar, his commander, Dahlia Goode’s war chief. Though he has some resignations over Kyogre, he still places much faith in her.[break][break]
“Ma’am, I think the play is to hit ‘em on the routes, before they get to the cities. Minimizes the risk to civilians.”

Sparks fly when Roland and Ceruledge’s swords meet. Ghastly blues contrast with fey pink. A dazzling light show plays for the audience. Those gathered to watch the match gasp as the beauty of it all. Watching two professional level trainers fight is hardly a novel experience, but true pros vex their audience as easily as they breathe.[break][break]
Subtle whines in Roland’s circuits are drowned out by the crowd and the sound of metal on metal. Though he turns every blow aside enough to avoid harm, he is powerless to stop the bitter blade’s draining effect. His own life energy, if machines can even have such a thing, is sapped, blow by blow.[break][break]
This battle has only begun. Roland whirrs, searching for an opening. What strength this black knight brings to bear. Finally, he finds his moment. Behind him, his liege lord plays his part. Where most Pokemon listen intently for a command, Roland knows Navy puts his gift for words to use in other ways.[break][break]
“We could go to Hoenn’s Area Zero sometime, if you want. Hoenn’s rangers have a few stations down there and I help out. Who knows, maybe you could catch your own Roland.”[break][break]
Roland’s blade thrums with lightning. Slipping it under the bitter blade, he tries to bring it against the Ceruledge before the energy explodes with the energy of a thunderbolt.

Where the fifth goes, he doesn’t know. She pulls out swords, and a Glastrier identical to his own Slow Dancer. He wonders how there can be so many of Calyrex’s legendary steeds. It’s a pointless question for better men than he. All he can think about is the way the giant spins about above her.[break][break]

He crosses the space between them, sitting on the edge of the bed. A memory plays across his mind, a memory of his daughter in a similar fit of grief on one of the rare occasions when he was home. “I felt the way you feel now, the first time Sootopolis got attacked. The day my brother died. So helpless it hurt.” He finally pulls back, looking her in the eyes. “Remember how this feels. It sucks. It’ll make you fight hard as hell to never feel this way again. You can get stronger, Genny. You are strong. It’s alright to be upset ‘bout what happened.”

“What’s Greyson done to you? Silph I get.” Arceus knows Matias caused plenty of trouble before Kyle’s death made him stop and take stock of his own actions. “But Greyson?”[break][break]
There’s another issue he means to address first, one many would say he has no power to actualize. The Elite Four are not operating at full capacity. There must be four, if for no other reason than they look weak while the post is closed.[break][break]

He’s got a lot of potential, plus he’s a soldier.” Though Eduardo Hisakawa hails from foreign Paldean shores, he has defended Hoenn as ardently as any son of this land’s soil.[break][break]
“And I think you’d be real good for it, Josh. You’re a champion rank trainer and a ranger. Real good PR there. Only problem I’d have with it personally is that Mauville needs you. Gwyar Wledig and you are the region’s two best gym leaders. Who would you tap to replace you?”

“While you’re at it, don’t dynamax your Pokemon.” Navy adds it casually, like they’re just carrying on the conversation. He prays the notion takes root, and that his influence keeps one more soul from falling to Eternatus’s influence. “If you wanna go in for one of the special powers your Pokemon can have, use tera shards. Then Gyarados really can be a deagon.”[break][break]
With that said, the sheriff makes for the door. He expects Lucia to follow, especially since it’s time to get to the business at hand. More than a few of the challengers look to him with curiosity. It’s not the first time that Navy has taken a young trainer under his wing. All the same, when Roland comes out, there’s usually trouble. A few abandon their place in the queue, instead choosing to follow him outside.[break][break]
“I’m also the best Elite Four ever.” He imagines @grayson, MATIAS SILPH, and a yet unknown fourth person’s eyebrows twitch, somewhere far away. “Anyway. They call Roland’s Pokemon species Iron Valiant. They’re like Gallades, but cooler. They’re also hard to catch and harder to train, so be careful if you see one in the wild.”[break][break]
Roland takes the compliment in stride. He is the first to reach the beach and stabs his sword into the sand. Electricity surges through the air in a constant whirring current. It’s enough to make the hair on Navy’s arm stand up. His iron warrior’s quark drive kicks up, finally fully powered on.[break[[break]
“Throw ‘er out. Give Hero a command and we’ll back you up.” Looking down at the Dunsparce, Navy gives it a thumbs up and a white, toothy smile. “We’ve got your back!”
