Clandestine meetings, a little skulduggery; these were just some of the many tools of the trade for Team Rocket. Under the cover of darkness, in a far off spot in Sootopolis, Kaname had requested to meet Kouji Matsubara. Kouji was his first real exposure to Rocket, perhaps even first companion if the Battle of Dewford meant anything.[break][break]

Kaname hoped that it meant something, that their brief mission together had bonded them somehow. He hadn’t seen Kouji since the events of the Battle of the Ancient Tomb, and was curious to see how the man was doing; to see if he, too, carried memories of their shared dream. More than that though, Kaname’s appointment to Head Scientist meant that he had need of Kouji’s companionship once more.[break][break]

The upper brass of Rocket were all predators in their own way, competing for flesh and blood. Kaname was no exception to that, ambition made him hungry; hungry for results, hungry for success. There was always the option of going it alone, but a coordinated pack could do so much more than a single predator.[break][break]

“Matsubara,” his voice was even-keeled and calm as he approached the other man, hands in his pockets. “It’s good to see you again.”

Kaname’s gaze was trained on the strange, spherical object sitting in the center of Nomi’s desk. His eyebrows shot up and he lifted his head to look directly at her when she mentioned Deoxys. “The supposedly extraterrestrial pokemon? There’s very little information I know about it, other than it’s apparently a pokemon from outer space.”[break][break]

The prospect of an alien pokemon seemed simultaneously outlandish and entirely normal to Kaname, but if Hoenn had taught him anything, it was that the outlandish was in fact entirely possible and more real than you’d like to admit. “I’m going to make an educated guess and say that is related to your line of questioning, and also happens to be part of the reason I’m here today.” He gestured toward the strange object sitting in the middle of the Head Scientist’s desk, his voice was laden with curiosity.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Kaname’s hand dropped into his lap as quickly as Jayden flinched at his touch. “Jayden…” the scientist’s voice was soft and full of concern. “I don’t want you to endure this. You don’t deserve it.”[break][break]

He neatly laced his fingers together in his lap, pensively watching the Admin’s face. “Underboss Beckett, he had no right to do this to you and if he ever does this again I’ll…” He trailed off, silence filling the air for a moment before Kaname elected to continue.[break][break]

“Do you want me to get you something cold to put on your face, to help with the pain?” He hoped that by changing the subject, Jayden wouldn’t concern himself with what he had meant to say earlier. “It’s not perfect, but I think I’ve got some chilled glassware somewhere in the lab fridge.”

A litany of feel good chemicals flooded Kaname’s brain as he lay breathless beside the man responsible for the wave of satisfaction rolling through his body.[break][break]

Pleasure, that’s all this encounter amounted to. There was no expectation on his end for anything more than that, he was just here to enjoy himself; anything more than that was extraneous.[break][break]

This brief dalliance with marcus kotov had been more fun than expected, but the moment had passed. There was no reason to cling to fading passion, to linger in this bed next to Marcus any longer than necessary, but he did. Kaname absentmindedly reached for Marcus’ hand as he turned to look at him.[break][break]

“Work is… not the subject I’d have picked for pillow talk.” He said, brows furrowed.“I’m working on several projects, that’s all. It’s nothing interesting, I promise.”[break][break]

“Interesting…” He rubbed his chin and nodded as Zev confirmed his theory was, in fact, sound. “I suppose that means there’s more to discover, hm?” He pondered aloud, his mind wondering to his colleague Alba Evovae and what the man might know of Ultra Space and the wormholes.[break][break]

“I look forward to the data you bring back, Beast Harcourt. Piecing together this puzzle could be fun.” There was an ambitious glint in the scientist’s eye; if he could play his part well, there could be a chance he might reap some of the rewards and accolades.[break][break]

Kaname watched Zev approach his apartment door and let out a small, relieved sigh. “Of course. I’ll keep that in mind, and just be sure to contact me when you need me.”[break][break]

As soon the door closed and he was sure Zev had started down the hall, his hand was in his pocket, fishing his phone out and immediately dialed up Miguel. Maybe if the other man wasn’t too mad, he might come back and finish what they started.

Kaname continued to admire the paintings, unaware that he was the subject of the other man’s studying. “It is nostalgic, it reminds of the birdwatching books I had when I was young.” He said, turning his attention to Gideon. “Did your interest in photography start when you were young? Admittedly, I was not a very good birdwatcher… Never had the patience for it.”[break][break]

“Of course.” He murmured in reply, busy committing to memory the color of the other man’s eyes; eyes that reminded of honey dripping from the comb. They were eyes he could one day find himself lost in. [break][break]

“Well, let me be the first to tell you that you’ve made an outstanding choice.” A slight smile had crept up on Kaname’s face, a little hint that Gideon was doing a good job of endearing himself to the Rocket. “I didn’t mention this on my profile, but I do like flowers and even bonsai- not that I’m good at growing trees or flowers, mind you. I just enjoy them.”

As the last word leaves his mouth, Navy’s fist crashes into Kaname’s stomach with unexpected force. The strike and subsequent pain force the air from his lungs and leave him doubled over, gasping for air and too shocked to do anything more than that. All the bluster he showed was gone and what was left was a weak, doubled over man vulnerable to more retribution. Kaname can barely focus on the words whispered to him, but the threat is clear: if makes good on his work, then it’s over for him.[break][break]

As Navy patted him on the shoulder, he rose slowly back to his standing height. His arms wrapped over his stomach, as pain shot through his torso. Shock had turned to rage as he watched the gym leader leave. ‘Get back to work…’. He wanted to run after Navy, to throw him to the ground and wail on him the same way Navy had during the Battle of Dewford.[break][break]

If he hadn’t hated Navy before today, well, he did now and he would be sure to extract his pound of flesh in time.[break][break]

The scientist took a long moment to compose himself, straightening his hair and clothing in preparation to finish the rest of the work day. After a few minutes of preening, the proverbial mask was back and he left the room with no one hopefully none the wiser to what occurred there.[break][break]

Kaname’s hands shot to catch the flying pokeball, a stunned look gracing his face. “Thank you, sir.” The scientist’s voice was subdued as he stared, transfixed by the pokeball in his hand. The extraterrestrial pokemon Deoxys laid with, generously lended to him by declan walsh, just opened a world of opportunity for him. His attention shifts to Underboss Cillian Quinn , who offers him a congratulatory remark. Kaname opens his mouth to speak but is interrupted by the sudden plunge in temperature in the cavern.[break][break]

Ice dances across the stone walls of the Cave of Origin as an avalanche of snow pours forth, accompanied by a feline intruder. The avalanche barrels onto their meeting table, throwing Kaname backward in his chair and sending him to the ground, writhing in momentary agony as Chien-Pao calls down Ruination on all present. He tightly clutched the pokeball containing the DNA Pokemon, waves of resentment and hatred coursed through Kaname as he clamored to his feet.[break][break]

His blood boiled as he shot fern delaney a venomous look; grudge and hate had made way for envy to take center stage; after all if Admin Delaney had what he wanted, then he should just rip it away from them. His finger was primed to release the extraterrestrial from the confines of its pokeball until THEO BECKETT ’s Bayleef released a soothing aroma that grounded him in the reality of the situation. He lingers for a moment, stowing the pokeball containing Deoxys before being spurred to life by Underboss Beckett’s call to action.[break][break]

“Trick Room.” He uttered the command and his Galarian Slowking complied, the gem on his shell glowing as a rectangular barrier formed around their battlefield. Within the barrier, pokemon like Chien-Pao would be mired under the Trick Room’s reversal of one’s natural speed, forced to move a snail’s pace and hopefully be subdued with ease.

summarize 2 plots that are in-progress and being threaded:

1. Caught Like a Rattata in a Trap[break]
Kaname Fujihara has spent part of his time in Hoenn posing as a League-affiliated lab assistant living in Ever Grande City, but his cover becomes compromised thanks to a mistaken AmiGo swipe and he ends up swimming with the sharks as he is confronted by Dewford's very own Navy in a small League HQ room. Despite the swagger Kaname managed to show, Navy knocks him down a peg with a punch and threat before storming off. Kaname, now exposed for the rat he is, will have to work hard to find a way out of the trap he's put himself in.

2. Compounding Interests[break]
Everything begins with a a dream, an idea, and a modest proposal. In a bid to ingratiate with his superiors and use the strange knowledge he seemingly woke up with after the events of the conflict at the Ancient Tomb, Kaname drafts and sends an email to Head Scientist Naomi Sato about researching and developing medicine biological weapons made using the toxic components of grass and bug type pokemon. In order to get a head start, Kaname heads to Petalburg Woods to collect specimens despite any approval to do so. While hiking through Petalburg Woods, looking for study samples, Kaname runs into Zev Harcourt out hiking. The Rocket Beast strikes up a conversation with the scientist and Kaname reveals the reason he's out in the field, and the two discuss his plans. Eventually, Zev points Kaname in the direction of both Underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli and ana fell , both women who know the subtle art of poisoning and suggests using them to aid his research. Kaname takes the advice to advice to heart and intends to seek the women out for aid.

“Interesting...” He said quizzically, finding it interesting that ana fell of all people took on the trade of poisoner. Due to his interaction with her during the SPECTRA trials, he wouldn’t have pegged her for someone who took on an art requiring such finesse. “I will keep Cygne and Underboss Fiorelli in mind. As you said, use any advantage I’ve got.” He said with a smirk.

He paused momentarily to glance at his watch and sighed. “Thank you, for your time. However, I should return what specimens I do have to the base.” He offered the Beast a polite nod before turning around and heading back down the trail in the opposite direction, whistling for his Greedent to follow him.

There is a certain look of satisfaction present on his own face as Kaname recognizes the look of disgust apparent on Navy’s face. “What? Something upset you? You asked for this, remember that.” The scientist said deridingly. He may have been the rattata in this trap, but he still had teeth.[break][break]

“I’m not ready for human testing, yet. I’m still concocting a solid formula, but after that? It’ll be on to preliminary testing on pokemon, do a few trials and work our way up to human specimens.” He sounded so casual about the whole thing, as though it were simple, as though he was cracking a few eggs to make an omelette.[break][break]

“But as per the terms of our agreement, I will inform you ahead of time before any such tests occur; especially if said tests were to occur in a populated area. I can’t have a wanton loss of life weighing on your conscience, we have to give you a fighting chance to play the hero.”

Kaname crosses his arms, biting the inside of his bottom lip. The idea of divulging secrets, all the confidential information he’s gathered, to this man. It made him sick, this man was just a dirty cop pressing him for information just to better himself. To be on the other side of someone’s ambition was crushing.[break][break]

He snapped back to reality, prodded verbally by the gym leader.[break][break]

“Just normal data, research reports. I don’t have a great level of clearance, but I take small or average things. The Nihilego toxin antidote or widely available reports on Mew.” He paused, looking Navy up and down for a moment. “I am a humble lab assistant, I don’t know much about the Rocket laboratory workings outside of the simple tasks I perform.” A little lie, a small untruth that Kaname attempted to force feed Navy. “But I’ve gotten the approval for a special project to begin researching biological weapons made from grass and bug type pokemon, to use against the League.” It was a considerable gamble to reveal the nature of his personal project, but his intentions were twofold; by offering up am such information, he intended to protect the more valuable Rocket research from discovery while hopefully sending Navy spiraling over the mention of the weapons.

“There’s no way they aren’t connected.” He sounded rather sure of himself as he examined a few choice photos more intently. “What if it’s a creature capable of traversing through Ultra Space, and perhaps even capable of coming to our world or going from it, much like the Ultra Beasts or Hoopa can? Several Pokémon are capable of moving through space via various means, what if this one is capable of the same?” It was just a theory, but it was a sound enough one for him to suggest it and would explain the tenuous connection between the tapestry and Lesser Megalopolis.[break][break]

“Lesser Megalopolis was in ruins, devoid of pretty much any life… if the Knight truly visited there, then I doubt it is truly benevolent. But then again, there is the tapestry depicting the battle between the Skeleton and it.” He paused for a moment, considering his next words carefully.[break][break]

“Something could’ve changed between that etching and the creation of the tapestry, or vice versa. We don’t know the age of the etchings in Lesser Megalopolis, so we can’t compare them to the age of the tapestry. So if they are connected, and I believe them to be connected in some way, we should find out what the older depiction is, because that will give you a basis to begin researching from.” He said, sliding the photos back into the envelope.[break][break]
