Finishing the pie and giving ample time for her to do the same, Derek grabbed the brunette by the hand and gently tugged her along. "I need to borrow you for a second." Whether Stormy wanted it or not, they needed to talk before things got any weirder. Or worse.

The only problem is that, once well away from the crowd, a contraption dangling from the ceiling rings overhead. The bartender has rigged a mistletoe, of all things, to a line they can pull from behind the counter. When Derek looked back at them unamused, they simply jingled it more. Talk about peer pressure and a lack of subtlety. At least the others shouldn't be able to see it unless they turned around...

"If you're going to stay upset with me...I guess I'll make sure to do something worth the trouble." After a gaze that lingers with great suspense, the cadet gives a look suggesting 'this is your fault too' as he moves in for a kiss. She could always stop him, of course. But if not, a little more than a quick peck on the cheek was coming Stormy's way.

Not a fan of sweets?

Stormy blinks, surprised, but pulls the plate back only for Raziel Beckett's Meowstic to make a movement suggesting he might like it. She sets the plate back down and returns to her own. But before she can properly dig in, DEREK HOFFMAN continues to exist in her peripheral vision, giving her anxiety and stress.

He might give her time to finish her pie, but his presence is overwhelming and she ultimately does not. Not before his hand falls over her own and pulls her away quicker than she can say.. anything. Instinct begs her to pull away from him, but surprise at his closeness and his request keeps her stuck to him.

She doesn't even have a chance to wipe her mouth of the blackberry pie.

So they melt into the crowd and pop out the other side. She stares at him, wide-eyed and confused, as his attention shifts up to the bough of mistletoe hanging over their heads. Stormy swallows, awkward, before following his gaze back over to the bartender who is dangling the dare above their heads by a string.

"I--"

His statement surprises her because this entire time she has been convinced he hated her. After what she had said, after how she had reacted to him, threatening violence because she had been so afraid--

But his lips brush against hers in a slowly deepening, warm kiss. It is far more than a brief peck on the cheek, and it causes her ears to turn red. She stares back at him like a deer in headlights, thinking and overthinking even while wrapped up in his attention.

Stormy does not pull away, however, unable to deny the warm feelings in her chest while they kiss.

he briefly noted that it might’ve been the only flower shop in fallarbor, but he nodded with a smile.

Even so, the uncertainty of what happens next was piercing. "You were supposed to get angry... Maybe even slap me?" Not that he had any authority over the matter, it was just how Derek imagined things should have gone. And nothing stopped Stormy from doing so after the fact, if it pleased her to do so.

A brief stare her way is broken once Derek's bodily functions catch up to his train of thought. Placing his dominant hand on her shoulder, he turns both of them back towards the others while whispering to her ear. "If the saying kiss and make up has any bearing on us, can we be cool again? I liked it better when we could talk." It was hard to feel like he belonged here when the person Derek knew the most was awkwardly shuffling around and ignoring him. So far, all she could say was "I." "I'm sorry if I upset you. But nothing you could say or do would make me want to just cut ties and pretend like you're not here. I had hoped you would feel the same. Don't keep me in the dark, alright?"

Stormy remains in stunned silence even after he pulls away. The absence of his warmth against her face leaves her cold and bare, and she watches him, wide-eyed, as he explains what he thought would have happened.

"I would never--"

But she doesn't have a chance to explain. He reaches to stop her and turn her around, leading her back into the throng of familiar faces. They all blur together as she parses through information given to her. His palm holding her shoulder keeps her grounded, and she eventually blinks back into reality as he begins to word vomit and ask for her to speak to him.

Can we be cool again?

It almost makes her want to cry. To hide her glassy eyes, she turns quickly, slamming her shoulder into his chest and wrapping her arms around him tightly. Stormy presses her cheek firmly into his chest and holds her breath so that he wouldn't hear her quiet gasps of relief and grief.

"I'm sorry-- I'm sorry, I won't. I won't keep you in the dark, I'm sorry."

Her fingers twist into the fabric of his jacket, holding him tighter.

It was easy to miss Lars among everyone that had shown up, mostly because he’d temporarily slipped away to pick up a few things.

He knew that some of the people he’d invited over weren’t able to attend, so he’d send the gifts he’d picked out for them at the earliest opportunity.

All too soon he’d returned with a paper bag that clattered ever so slightly before attempting to call everyone to attention.

“Okay, so uh. I know this isn’t much, but…”

He then placed the paper bag that contained the Pokéballs on another unoccupied table.

“All of you get one Pokémon each, the Pokéballs are labelled. Some of you guys were harder to pick out Pokémon for, so I went with your general ‘vibe’, as the kids call it.”

he was mostly oblivious to the things going on around him as his focus centered on satiating his appetite. however, the topic of willow atkins managed to vaguely hold his attention.

there was a lot going on, and a lot of food, to be fair. plus, he didn’t suspect a thing.

”yeah. will's the mother of my son actually,” he told LANCE VOLLANS.

the one that had stabbed the guy that one time. it was no secret. bo let it roll off, finding no room or desire to dwell on his feelings in the bustle of festivities.

when lars called their attention, bo finally set down the chopsticks.

was this their bonus?

”thanks sir!” he called out, unsure where to put his bet. he looked around subtly, wondering if others might be wondering the same.

where were the checks?

not that he wasn’t grateful, or curious. ”wonder what lars thinks our vibes are…” he would find out once he was finished with his dinner.

Salem gives thanks to Stormy as she leaves the plate of sweets for him to ingest for himself much to the disapproval of his trainer. Though it wasn't like Razz was going to stop him as this was as much of a celebration for the cat as it was for Rangers in his opinion. As Razz wouldn't be able to do his job without the cat or his other pokemon around. While Razz looks toward Lars as he has an announcement about gifts Salem looks toward the prancing Ninetails of lykaios athanasia. The cat deciding to make some piece for now and offer some brisket from the table.[break][break]

Meanwhile Razz takes the pokeball a bit hesitantly as Christmas wasn't something he really celebrated. "Umm thank you Laurence, but you really didn't have to." Though as LANCE VOLLANS ask what they got Razz takes a quick look, "Glaceon," he gives Lars a look, "So do Ice Types just gravitate toward you?"

Though not as outward with his feelings as he once was, there was relief when they'd done away with the divide between them. Things could go back to the way they were—the way they should be. Or, maybe, even better than before.

The rest of the party seemed to be going well without them, as Lars was taking this time to announce he'd gotten all of them a gift. Denoting the difficulty of choosing for some, Derek is surprised by the effort. He hadn't known Lars to be thoughtful. Not that he really knew Lars at all...

Presenting a pokeball for each of them, Derek looks at Stormy to see if she's ready. Her fingers in his jacket clung with some amount of desperation to keep close, or to hide her face. A gentle hand runs along the top of her head, prying it back so that she could see his face, rather than the dark of his jacket. "You ready to open yours?" The expression he wore explained there was no rush to do so. Just the wanting to know if she was ready, or needed more time.

He doesn't push her away or grow tense, which she is thankful for. Instead, he whispers down to her and stays still to let her breathe and take a moment to slow the rapid beating of her anxious heart. Buried against his chest, however, the outside world grows muffled as she focuses on the rhythmic sound of his breathing versus her own.

Only when he shifts does she come back to her senses, and only when his hand brushes the back of her head to gently peel her back does she glance up at him and remember that she's in public. She's at a ranger event. There could be dozens of eyes on her watching her crumble beneath some unseen pressure. All because Derek had asked her to forgive him and to stop being so cold.

Stormy sucks in a breath and removes her hand from his jacket. She appears suddenly awkward, though she takes the Pokeball from his hands and glances back up to meet his face. She seems sheepish now instead of guarded, like she's a bit embarrassed that he had been witness to her emotional state.

"Sure, yeah. Let's open it."

But she waits for him to open his first before clicking the button on her own.

His is a rather wordy species name, given that it's a regional variant. One that his late sister wanted oh so desperately...

"Wow, that's...it's funny you got me one of these." Funny isn't the right word. Though frankly, nobody would understand the significance of this pokemon to him. While she wanted both, his little sister only ever got to see a traditional Ponyta and Rapidash back in Johto. The Galarian Rapidash in this device was, by all means, something of a fantasy.

Removing a pokeball from it's holster, Derek places the one containing the Rapidash in the slot to ensure he'd work on training it soon. "Thanks, Lars...I don't know how you came across it, but...I owe you one." Uncharacteristically heavy were his words, the silver-haired male looking over to Stormy to distract himself from the emotions welling up. "Galarian Rapidash. How about you?"[break][break]

He’d had to poke around on the sly for some of the requests without giving himself away, but the way the choice he’d picked out for Derek, and the profound effect it had on the other man; he knew the search had resulted well.

“I did say, I had to look around and get them as close to what you would prefer. But… I’m not done yet.”

This was coming out of his own pocket, but eventually, he pulled out a stack of envelopes. For some reason, someone had told him that they had to be specifically red, because it had something to do with good luck and all that.

“Hey, I uh… I also have another surprise for everyone. Although the same goes, whoever isn’t here I’ll be sending them their gifts afterward.”

He then started handing out the red envelopes. And what was inside those envelopes?

Why, cash, of course!

While he wasn’t going to be revealing how much it was, it was definitely quite an amount.

“Go spend your holidays with your families once we’re done here for the evening,” he added once he was done giving away the envelopes to everyone who’d turned up.

Because I don’t have a family left, just you guys, he continued the rest of the sentence in the back of his head.

And somewhere, there was a cackle. That familiar, snarky cackle.
