The crunch of leaves reminds you that nature has long since claimed these territories, and you are only a visitor to a very closed ecosystem. As the last of your team enters into the growing fog in this maze of trees, you can hear the sound of trees groaning as they sway in the wind, a sensation that leaves your skin riddled with goosepimples. "this place is, like, super creepy," annalise whispers, an astute observation of the towering silhouette of trees and the fog that bleeds into the air around them. [break][break]she shouldn't be here, in all honesty — her gait sways unnaturally each time she favors her bad ankle — but what kind of head ranger would she be if she didn't insert herself into some weird, maybe-pokemon-related phenomenon? sure, is the perfect ranger representative and would probably relay any pertinent information behind these hauntings, but fomo is terribly compelling. [break][break]
the wind tugs at her clothes, carrying an otherworldly rumble as it passes them. she glances in the direction it came from, into the hazy abyss beyond the tree line, and her brain jumps to the safest conclusion: it's the trees.

still, she releases her meowstic as insurance. her keen eye makes her the perfect lookout for the group.

"y'know, if this is anything like a horror movie, we should prob stick together. people always get fucked up in movies when they split up." [break][break]the eerie monuments stand like sentinels in the distance, drawing her curiosity like a siren's call. she raises a hand to point toward them. [break][break]
"those look like something a ghost would hang out around — let's check it out!"

"I don't know if confronting them is the best idea." Well, maybe it was. Though it was possible they could figure out what they were dealing with before having to actually deal with it.

Penelope was, for a matter of FACT, the most excited among the bunch to enter the forbidden forest.

Despite the dread and anxiety that persistently kept her stomach churning, the crinkle of leaves beneath her every step and the growing fog were just enough the tickle that halloween-y/horror enthusiast side of her, that for a second, she had almost forgotten their lives could very well be in danger.

"Groups of two should be fine, then, right?"
[break][break]

Normally, the councilwoman wouldn't hesitate to agree with the head ranger, noting that safety should always triumph over efficiency, but to be honest, with something like this, that childish side of her brain urged against it. Four people sticking together meant one, fewer scares, and two, less ground covered. A lose-lose, if they ask her.

As moved toward the eerie monuments, Penelope split off toward the nearby withered trees, half expecting to be the one that followed her.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

ollie is not much of a horror enthusiast. in fact, while he does enjoy a good haunted house like any other person, he much prefers the candy-grabbing part of the holiday than the jump-scare part. but how could he say no when his good friend suggests it to him?

SPLITTING UP AMONGST THE PINES, you are subjected to the twisted abmiance of the woods as the skies overhead begin to dark, blotted out by the forest's canopy. Yet you're certain it hasn't gotten quite so late yet to warrant this vast, encroaching darkness...[break][break]

As they poke and prod at the eerie monuments, and quickly set about sifting for evidence, relying on their pokemon's insights. It's convenient then that while one inspected for elusive clues, the other conjured an ILLUMINATING GLOW that cut through the growing pitch. Working together, you realize what appeared to be random gouges in the earth are actually a trail of prints, like the skittering appendages of some great spider-like gait trawling through the woods... The thought gives you goosebumps.[break][break]

The others are not so fortunate as they moved forward casually, blindly moving around in the haunted creature's domain. They do not find any evidence, though perhaps they had not meant to, as some discoveries are made purely by accident. But as and trudge through the woods by the light of a mystical flame, they begin to hear something. Deep, reverberating groaning surrounding them, impossible to pinpoint and cascading across the windless trees...[break][break]

"how come we only ever meet up in creepy places?" annalise whispers to her sole companion as tuna drops to all fours to scrutinize the grooves in the now-illuminated ground. "first those ruins, now here ... hey, what are these?"

"I dunno." Derek responds towards Anna, unsure if she is making some kind of accusation. "Where else am I supposed to meet Hoenn's latest head ranger?" It wasn't like she was some coffee shop girl, or whatever.

As they continue on their way, Derek finds that the tracks are bringing them towards THE TREELINE. With his Starmie still present at his side to help illuminate the path, they peer forward into the forest for further signs of whatever it was.

Well, Derek had a pretty good idea. Having been a ranger himself, identifying tracks was important. And a lot of fun, at least for him.

But it was as if they vanished right before that tree... Could something have climbed it, maybe? On the other side of the ridge, and manage only to disrupt the delicate balance within these woods. While the trees continue to groan overhead, the night around them grows thick, and before long they can hear something in the distance... Winding, shrill yips loosed into the night... A cacophany of feral voices, before they can hear the woodweald around them teeming with movement—twigs snapping as the brush is swiftly thrown aside to avail them to this promising SCENT...[break][break]

this forest is super creepy, but annalise and persist. the trail had ended by a tree, but her meowstic hadn't managed to see anything in the branches that might've made those grooves in the ground.

Derek hesitates to pick up the doll, his first and foremost obligation being the footsteps that managed to stop before this tree. It doesn't make any sense.

Or did it?

It takes time to sink in, but as Derek stands so close to the tree, he suddenly realizes the danger. His Starmie is still present, however, which gives the gym leader some small sense of security. He positions it in front of him, refraining from words to avoid alarming what he believes to be present.

But it was possible he was just being paranoid.

Regardless, Derek recalls his time up on Mt. Pyre. And in the woods behind his gym in Petalburg. They were hard to find. Rare, as with many ghost pokemon. But they did exist here in Hoenn.

The gym leader moves his Starmie so that it would ILLUMINATE the tree while he picked up this object. Appeared to be some kind of ragdoll. A ragdoll giving off some really bad energy. His Starmie, a psychic type, seemed to flinch when it's trainer picked the thing up with his bare hands.

"I know rangers usually monitor the living, but I am surprised our head ranger hasn't at least made a guess by now." Derek starts as he looks up towards the tree, ragdoll still in-hand. Really, it could be any one of them trees in this place. But this one had something left at the base of it. And the tracks lead them right to it. "Though I think we might've found it already...a Trevenant." As he eyes the tree in front of him, Derek awaits any kind of reaction. Something to signal that it was sentient.

ollie is no coward, but the whistling winds whipping around them and the menacing howls in the distance is scary enough to send a shiver even down his spine. "hey," he says warily. "did you hear that?"

[break][break] twigs snap underbrush, and ollie's head snaps up just in time to see a line of eyes just staring back at them. their sclera reflect in his own verdant green, the sight of flames licking up the nighttime air. he intakes a sharp breath, before instinctively stepping in front of . even though he's not sure what he can do about it.

[break][break] "nugget!" he whistles sharp, calling his ursaring back to him and also throwing out a pokeball to release his yamper. "push 'em back!" his yamper lets out a howl in the form of ROAR to push them back.

Penelope immediately jumped back into Ollie at the sight of the piercing scarlet eyes, then again with several more pairs appeared before them, glimmering beneath the flickering MYSTIC FIRE.

"Yeah, let's go," She agreed, fully allowing herself to be grabbed and yanked any which way. She knew full well her wobbly legs wouldn't be able to direct them alone. As they made a run for it, Penelope would only look back to urge her Delphox to follow.
