THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

When Frank had hired on DEREK HOFFMAN to escort him into the rift at Mt. Pyre and back, he had not expected the sight that greeted them on the other side. An enormous, ominous sun caressing the horizon. Rocky islands suspended high above them. Mist that clung to his clothing like grasping fingers.[break][break]

"Incredible," Frank said to the man beside him, genuine shock and awe on his face. "I've never seen anything like this."[break][break]

He glanced overhead. Darkness rolled in as the sun dipped lower and lower out of sight. Perhaps it was risky to traverse the place called the Border at such an hour, but there hadn't been a better opportunity.[break][break]

Frank started down a rocky trail, which snaked along the steep face of a mountain. "Let's go see what we can see before it gets too dark, eh?"

"That would probably be best." Derek starts as he follows after his employer, allowing the Sobble perched atop of him to observe their surroundings for any signs of a threat. "Oh and by the way, this is Michail." The entrance of another through the portal would reveal another male closer to Derek in age, though hair of a much darker complexion.

"He completed my gym challenge, so no need to worry if they're up to the task." A playful smirk is shot back towards his old friend. Well, maybe they were more of an acquaintance. "Speaking of, how's your training come along since then?" The question invites jayden cross to speak freely on anymore badges or pokemon he might've acquired since.

And while he listened, Derek would be able to keep a close eye on Frank Caffey. Wouldn't want the one paying him for protection in this place to wind up missing. Or worse...

it was not that he was avoiding fern delaney, but after the events that had partook in the border, it felt best to maybe put some distance between them. even so, jayden couldn't ignore his responsibilities.

[break][break] still, he was surprised to find himself in the company of petalburg's former gym leader. even more surprised to find himself in the company of someone he did not know.

[break][break] his head tilts towards DEREK HOFFMAN when he's spoken to. "been going alright," he says, with a nod. "though i'm sure you'd give me a run for my money if i challenged you again."

"Pleased to meet you, Michail," Frank said with an easy grin, extending a hand to shake jayden cross's hand. His accent possessed the distinct characteristics of one born and raised in Black City, Unova. "I'm Frank. Frank Caffey."[break][break]

His gaze followed the Crobat into the growing darkness, glad that his companions had the foresight (and the Pokémon) to come well-equipped. Not one to sit back while others contributed, Frank released his Rotom. Its electric body cast a soft, warm glow upon their immediate area.[break][break]

"I'm new to Hoenn, actually. Stuff like this just doesn't happen back home. I wanted to check it out for myself. Call it a… uh, natural curiosity."[break][break]

In truth, Frank was a thrillseeker and rulebreaker.[break][break]

The shadows of night deepened around the trio and their Pokémon as they continued down the slope. Eventually, they reached the base of the mountain. Unseen from above due to the angle of the rocks, an enormous, broken seal occupied a large stretch of stone.[break][break]

Amazed, Frank picked up his pace. "Do you see this?" he called out to the others, excitement coloring his tone. "What do you think it is?"

"really? i haven't exactly improved since then." derek was playing video games and thinking about who to invite onto his podcast for it's second episode for months now. but this thought process is cut short upon frank's excitement about something ahead.

and it was easy to see why.

"oh, that? it's one of the seals. there was another like this one, although it had... a bunch of dead leaves somewhere... behind it?" derek reaches around, trying to locate a hidden space around it, but it's no use. there are no dead leaves emanating an infectious bitterness like before. in fact, there is nothing there.

instead his shadow casts itself against the surface of the broken seal, taunting him with a middle finger before running off into the mist. derek thought to follow at first, but realized it could be a trap of some kind.

"stay sharp you two." derek starts as he reaches for the spell tag in his pocket. "we're not alone right now." placing it upon jonesy, he hopes the tag will help his pokemon pick up on whatever magic is being used to turn their shadows into playthings for the locals. spirits. his other hand readies a pokeball, but it's too late...

tl;dr
- notices their shadows acting on their own (#18)
- places his spell tag on sobble to lure out the spirit he suspects is performing said act

frank caffey. jayden nods towards the unovian native. "pleasure to meet you too, mr. caffey."

[break][break] his head tilts as he listens to the other's words. surely, they weren't the first person who was merely curious about hoenn — it was why Rocket had set it's sights on the region in the first place. there were still so many things unique to it that he'd never seen in kanto, nor galar.

[break][break] "understandable."

[break][break] turning to DEREK HOFFMAN, he says, "you sell yourself short." jayden knew that there were no such thing as a guaranteed loss or a win. in every battle, there were always moments when the tide could turn. sometimes terribly, too.

[break][break] but he wasn't one to argue the semantics of something such as this, especially when there were far more interesting events on the horizon. violet eyes lift as frank quickens his pace towards the north seal. jayden follows a bit more slowly, warily, behind petalburg's ex-gym leader and his companion.

[break][break] a chill runs down his spine as he watches derek's shadow taunt them from near the seal.

[break][break] "we should - " he starts to say be careful but his words are cut off when a sudden will-o-wisp is cast against them. his head snaps to the side, eyes widening at the sight of a hulking shadow. "— watch out!"

[break][break] a CONFAGRIUS stands before them, larger and more menacing than jayden has ever seen before. pink and purple smoke wisps out of the pokemon's coffin, which is cracked in a variety of ways, making it look like it's been through the ringer more than once.

[break][break] it's demonic gaze pins jonesy in particular — and the spelltag that he holds.

[break][break] jayden whistles sharp, and his crobat comes sailing in. janos hisses out a haze creating some distance between the trio and the monster that threatens them.

Though Frank heard Derek's warning, he was so distracted by the sight of the seal that he did not see the way Derek's shadow taunted them until it was too late. The Cofagrigus emerged with such suddenness that Frank stumbled backward, alarmed.[break][break]

"What the—"[break][break]

Before he could order his Rotom to attack the Coffin Pokémon, however, Michail's Crobat summoned a HAZE that obscured the Cofagrigus and Derek's Sobble from sight.[break][break]

Uncertainty washed over Frank in a suffocating wave. For a moment, he felt lost, disoriented, confused — like the fresh sense of limbo when he discovered that everything and everyone had abandoned him during his incarceration.[break][break]

When the haze cleared, the light from his Rotom revealed a horrific scene: the Sobble dead on the ground beneath the Cofagrigus, lying in a pool of blood. Bile surged up Frank's throat, but he swallowed hard, ignoring the nasty sensation that lingered.[break][break]

"Duke!" he called out, voice hitched in panic. "Stop that thing!"[break][break]

Duke the Rotom flew toward the Cofagrigus, casting HEX on it to force it away from the Sobble's unmoving body.

derek heard, but again... it was too late.

the two are accosted by this cofagrigus, it's trainer landing on his backside along the ground from the confrontation. struggling upright and gathering his senses, derek eventually finds that the sobble is no longer at it's place atop his shoulder.

instead it's body lay along the ground, maroon hues of ichor leaking out. but worse than that, one could see the spirit of his pokemon begin to rise out from... from it's corpse.

"jonesyyy!" screaming that wishes to defy what has transpired. he would have reached out to the little guy, had the cofagrigus not snatched it up with one of it's tendril-like hands.

reasoning with this thing is out the window. obviously.

practiced hands reach into his jacket, several pokeball slotted between the fingers. many are released, and their orders are clear. "vitani, lock it down!" the shaded pyroar's shadow hold prevents any means of escape.

"ape, bring me the little ghost." swift application of it's phantom force would allow the annihilape to disappear and reappear, liberating the sobble's spirit from the clutches of their enemy.

"rhulk..."

derek doesn't even have to finish. of them all, the shadow charizard understands him the most. a large sum of it's dark power whelms up from around the ghost type, piercing and staking the entirety of it's figure. gored a dozen times over, derek is able to focus on the passing of his pokemon.

rather, he thinks it hasn't passed on just yet. the amount of bloodloss and jonesy's wound didn't seem absolutely fatal. if anything, the ghost type took advantage of jonesy's weakened state, prying the spirit from it's vessel. "please, ava..."

derek takes the sobble's spirit and lays it back down into the body before allowing his megastone to resonate with the hatterene. "save him."

the hues of the hatterene's life dew combine with infinity energy to attempt the improbable. even if the emotions within it's trainer grated on it's psyche, the meticulous nature of mending spirit and body back together is eventually accomplished.

it took a moment, but jonesy's headfin started to twitch.

the HAZE fades and what greets them is a horrifying sight.

[break][break] however, unlike his partners, jayden's heart is already hardened against death. the expression on his face is grim as he listens to DEREK HOFFMAN cry out for his lost pokemon.

[break][break] but derek is quick to react. he calls his pokemon forth, one of who hold's the monstrosity in place, and the other that calls his sobble's dead spirit to him.

[break][break] his own gengar explodes from his pokeball, as his mega earring reacts to the commotion. white light glows around the shiny gengar as it mega-evolves, thrusting a perilous ICY WIND towards it's target.

[break][break] together, they plunge attack after attack against the monstrous creature, pushing it back.

[break][break] the admin's gaze is locked onto the sight of the spirit in dereks arms as life surges back into the small creature. the rest of the fog fades, and the three of them are left again in relative silence.

[break][break] he takes a breath.

[break][break] "is he alright?" he asks, glancing briefly at Frank Caffey before looking at derek and his sobble.

[break][break] he grimaces, looking at the frosted remains of their attacker.

[break][break] "what was that?" he asks the open space in front of them, a mixture of awe and fear.

Relief washed through Frank when he saw the dead Sobble returned to life, though a sudden surrealness arrived on its heels. He stared, slack-jawed, at the miracle in front of his eyes. LIFE DEW only heals wounds; never before had he heard of it restoring the dead to the world of the living.[break][break]

"That's incredible," Frank murmured.[break][break]

Michail's questions jolted him out of his awe, however. Frank shook his head; je had never seen a Pokémon like the one they'd defeated.[break][break]

"Your guess is as good as mine. Do you think it came out of this thing?" he wondered, gesturing up to the seal in the mountain. In the darkness of the early night, however, the details of the device were difficult to see. Duke's glow was not enough to illuminate it.

i think so..." truth be told, he was desperate to believe that, yes, jonesy managed to survive. but he still wasn't well. the spare pokeball brought the sobble into the safety of it's confinement before the others followed, save for the charizard that would vigilantly scan their surroundings.

"from what i can tell, this place is where all the deceased spirits reside. but that's a transition most make without their physical body so close by." the only reason it seemed possible was the cracked seal. the wavering hold this place had on their souls. the fact their physical bodies could pierce this veil, roaming it like any other.

standing upright, derek looks around, much too paranoid to let down his guard again. he answers them without observing the broken seal. "could be. but they might simply linger because they know what it means." as long as the seal remained broken, it would have a fresh supply of entertainment. the dead always found ways to torment the living.

"as for what that was, i couldn't say. could be that all the people coming inside, summoning energies to this place that aren't supposed to be here." there was much about the tera orbs they didn't understand, let alone the other powers that trainers summoned willy nilly. "any sense of balance this place had was tipped over when the seals were broken. when all of us trainers started to step through." the countless influx of spirits from the destroyed universes were the likely cause for the breach, and now they were adding fuel to the fire.

[break][break] jayden had been to it enough times to know. while he adored ghosts, the ones that inhabited this place were not the mythical creatures from the tangled wood that he'd grown to love. they were viscous and awful, full of HATE and vengeance.

[break][break] "last time i was here, i'd seen victini's remnant." he blinks, turning towards both Frank Caffey and DEREK HOFFMAN. "it had wanted to kill us."

[break][break] it had wanted to kill all the humans, resentful of how heartlessly the humans had used it's death in vain. but he still had yet to learn if that was a hallucination or the real thing. the fireballs certainly had felt real.

[break][break] he listens to DEREK HOFFMAN's theory, and he can't help but find himself agreeing. even being here for so long now... he reaches to his arm, pressing a palm against the skin there and squeezed. he didn't know exactly the effects of it, but he knew that if they stayed there too long... it wouldn't bode well.

[break][break] "or it could be the rip in time from the rifts opening in the first place," he says, thinking of what he saw at littleroot with dialga. "either way, do you think it's possible to repair it?"

The border between life and death. Murderous Pokémon that attacked trespassers. Frank did not know how much he wanted to remain in that realm beyond the rift — not until he had a better understanding of what was going on there, anyway.[break][break]

He gave the broken seal one last, lingering look, wishing he had more light and time to explore it, then stepped away.[break][break]

"We should head back so you can heal your Sobble at the Pokémon Center," he said to Derek, wishing they could stay, knowing they shouldn't. "I'm sorry about what happened to Jonesy."[break][break]

The little Pokémon had died on Frank's dollar, after all.[break][break]
