THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

The Ultra Crater - a veritable paradise.

Ecologically speaking, anyway. The rich pockets of dense jungle hosted innumerable species new to science. Plants especially! Which wasn't Dr. Graves' area of focus, but he'd been allowed an emergency grant to conduct an expedition into this new realm despite that. Something about low application numbers.

The danger didn't deter him. He'd always been up for a challenge - to his detriment, at times. But the risk was worth the reward, in his opinion. Knowledge was power and could be used for the greater good.

"Wow! Look at the trigger hairs on this specimen!" Gideon remarked as he carefully used a hand trowel to extract the specimen from the earth. "It must be carnivorous... which means there will likely be insects or insect-like creatures here."

Paradise indeed for a bug nerd like him.

Ultra Crater. Gunner recalled Greyson Connors's mention of it, but the other man had not shared much detail. Therefore, the alien landscape, geysers of steam, thick jungle foliage, and strange yellow sky were all unexpected sights.[break][break]

Fanning himself with a hand, Gunner was already feeling the effects of such a humid climate. He wrenched his eyes away from their strange surroundings to watch his brother collect an unfamiliar plant. At least Gideon seemed perfectly happy here.[break][break]

Then Gunner glanced sidelong at the third member of their party, a Ranger named leyon cœur they had hired as protection while they explored. Though Gunner was perfectly capable of protecting his brother, the less Gideon saw of Gunner's battle prowess, the better.[break][break]

"Let's keep our eyes open just in case we encounter anything weird or dangerous," the younger Graves said. "Something doesn't feel right."[break][break]

It was no Border, at least.

see, he’s not science-y at all. the most science he understand is where blood rushes to on his body during certain thoughts and why. that’s it, that’s the limit of his science.

he doesn’t even know the sky’s not actually blue, you guys. no understand of that at all. let alone that trigger hairs act as high-sensitivity levers and are crucial for prey capture for digestion.

their hired muscle doesn’t look at that impressed. as a matter of fact, his face is scrunched and he lets out a soft, ”mmhm,” which clearly radiates more as an, ew.

wait, that’s when what gideon says clicks for leyon and he freezes, looking properly horrified. d-did he say bugs?

gunner’s words hit him like a ton of bricks and help him focus. he straightens, horror gone—for the most part—and he clears his throat. he’s trying to look as professional as he can muster.

”oh yes, yep, mmhm. eyes are peeled.” leyon encourages, mind traveling darker places.

like hell i’mma let some creepy crawly get the better of me. no thanks.

After gingerly securing the specimen in his pack and collecting a soil sample, Gideon then called upon his ROTOM to take detailed notes and images of the surrounding area via the tablet it inhabited.

"Soil is thin and appears to be similar to Oxisols and Ultisols found in tropical forest areas. Littered in decaying vegetal and other biological remains. Surrounding foliage is dense, with a thicker canopy and more sparse understory..." Scribe documented every word the professor spoke; it knew the drill by now.

"...Does anything feel right inside these rifts?" Gideon probed his younger brother, half-teasing, once he'd concluded his observations.

Of course not. These places were so far removed from their world that it was intensely disorienting.

But also exhilarating.

"Do you have much experience defending against Bug-type Pokémon, Ranger Cœur?" Gideon asked their other party member as he righted himself, brushing his pants as he did so.

Gunner smiled at Gideon's good-natured tease. He turned away to let his older brother continue his work, wandering some distance from the other two — though not far enough away to lose sight of them. Just in case, he released his Blaziken, Caelia, from her Pokéball to accompany him.[break][break]

All of a sudden, the earth beneath their feet began rumbling. Subtle at first, the strength of the quake increased with speed. "Careful, you two!" Gunner shouted, alarmed as the ground suddenly surged upward. Reaching out blindly, his fingers wrapped around what he thought was a root forced out of the soil.[break][break]

But as they surged upward without any sign of stopping, he realized it wasn't a root at all. Dirt fell away in sheets, revealing a strange, machine-like Pokémon in flight. Except it had no wings at all, but what looked like rocket propulsion.[break][break]

"Gideon! Leyon! Are you all right?" Gunner called over to them. Thankfully, it seemed they'd also been caught on the Pokémon's body. Beside him, Caelia clung to a part of its frame.

”i do. recently helped an infestation in slateport. what a yuck that wa—“

oh and then the ground gives way and leyon’s making a face like he can’t quite figure out what’s going on. instinct has his hand reaching over to grip anything. the formation reveals the pokémon and leyon’s eyes are as wide as saucers.

”fine!” he was fine, not great, but alive and fine. ”what the hell is this thing?!”

it’s a rhetorical question as leyon looks around. they were soaring in the sky. sure he’d flown on his togekiss a few times, but never this high, not ever. he thought he’d be more scared.

but he wasn’t. he was wide eyed and enjoying the view. the view that revealed some kind of, leyon didn’t know.

”hey doc,” he’s calling to GIDEON GRAVES, not that he realizes how absolutely rude he sounds doing so because maybe the guy’s not a doctor. ”got any clue what that crater we’re headed for could be??”

How fleeting normalcy had been.

They'd only just entered this alien realm and were now suddenly thrust into the throes of danger. Shaking earth barely gave warning of what was to come before all three men were propelled into the air.

It was like something out of a comic book. Gideon would have laughed, if it wasn't so terrifying. He clung to an iron branch for dear life, his ROTOM floating beside him helplessly.

"I will be once this thing lands!" He responded to Gunner Graves, yelling above the roar of rushing air.

Thankfully the - giant metal root? was it a living thing or some automaton? - whatever it was wasn't soaring very high into the air. It simply transported them from one crater to the next, just above the tree line.

leyon cœur pointed out the crater ahead. Flashes of something stood out within the dense vegetation, but Gideon couldn't make it out between his watering eyes and faltering grip.

"Nope! But we're about to find out!"

He braced for impact.

Despite needing to cling on for dear life, Gunner could not rip his eyes away from the breathtaking view from astride the Pokémon. The trees swept by underneath them, and he thought he could see a short mountain range in the distance.[break][break]

They reached a crater, and the Pokémon carrying them descended at startling speed. Gunner's entire body shuddered with the force of the landing. Looking down, the ground was at least thirty feet below their feet.[break][break]

"Caelia, lend me a hand to the ground, please?" he asked his Blaziken. She obeyed without question; grasping him securely, she leaped down safely.[break][break]

Once the others had joined him in the shadow of the Pokémon, which seemed inert now, Gunner scanned their new surroundings with interest, his senses on high alert. Bamboo grew everywhere, the towering stalks carved with letters.[break][break]

Gunner did a double take when he saw them. His eyes grew wide. Not only could he read the glyphs, but he could understand them. "Gideon, take a look at this."

[attr="class","leymain"]nerds will be nerds, leyon thought to himself as he released his togekiss and hoped over onto his back. the view had been stunning, sure. the glyphs were cool, he guessed. but reality was hitting leyon on the shoulders like a ton of bricks. they were in a strange new place with a strange new metal pokémon and honestly the place looked like some kinda hole in the ground.

because he was feeling uneasy, he released his sylveon as well. he glanced around the place, trills escaping his small form, ribbons waving in the air and sensing whatever aura there was to sense. all while leyon scooped him up into his arms and held him for comfort.

yeah, big bad body guard right here.

"i think i'm the only one that this place gives the mega creeps." he complained to his pokémon in his arms, who scurried against his abdomen until he was released.

those ribbons were moving pointedly now, waving in a certain direction. leyon approached the sylveon and put a hand over his face, but then let out a grunt of defeat. "man, i can't see shit."

gathering energy around himself, the sylveon shot a moonbeam toward the opening around them, up toward the sky. said attack lit up the entire crater wall and revealed the nasty ass creepy crawlies along the walls.

both leyon and sylveon froze in horror, blue in the face.

"GUYS?!" he whined out in a higher pitch than men can usually manage. "GUYS BUGS! BIG ASS MAM MA JAMMA BUGS!!"

TYRANITAR ♂ ✨ UNNERVE | Earthquake / Dark Pulse / Thrash / Rock Slide / Superpower / Iron Head

To say Gideon had a less-than gracious landing would be an understatement. Where his two companions easily alighted from the giant metal Pokémon, the professor desperately clung to its iron carapace upon impact. It was a miracle he didn't land face-first into the dirt.

Luckily, he survived to live another day. And make another discovery! His brother was the first one to point out the odd symbols surrounding them and bring them to Gideon's attention.

"Fascinating..." The professor breathed, running a hand over the grooves carved into the innumerable stalks of bamboo. "Scribe, photograph these."

As far as translating the glyphs, he was equally surprised to find that he could understand them.

"It says..." Squinting, Gideon read aloud, "A robe of fire rats."

What could that mean?

Unfortunately, their group didn't have long to ponder on the mysterious message. While leyon cœur's MOONBEAM was helpful in illuminating the area for Gideon to better examine the symbols, it also revealed that they were not... exactly alone.

From the darkness a gigantic centipede-like creature emerged, its trunk of a body rising into the air well above them. It hissed menacingly while its hundreds of legs undulated back and forth. With an ear-piercing screech, a crown of fire also bloomed on its head.

"Ha! Spectacular!" Gideon exclaimed with an odd grin. Read the room, man!

He gestured for his ROTOM to record this encounter before releasing a TYRANITAR onto the field. He stepped between the humongous insect and the professor, ready to offer protection.

Gunner did not find the towering Bug-type Pokémon nearly as spectacular as his brother did, and certainly not when it lunged, mandibles first, at Gideon.[break][break]

"You gotta be more careful, Gideon!" Gunner exclaimed, an edge of exasperation in his tone. Then he glanced over at Leyon to see how the other man was faring, worried they had hired the wrong Ranger.[break][break]

That was when Gunner saw another giant centipede out of the corner of his eye as it reared up to attack Leyon.[break][break]

"Leyon! Look out!"

[attr="class","leymain"]the ring of fucking fire above the giant snake-bug-dragon-fucker made leyon's entire body break out in shivers. worse yet, that wasn't the only ugly mug they had to deal with. leyon could see little versions of the big ones snaking around, along with other various kinds of bugs.

"ew eW EW!" leyon shudders, then hears them yell his name. the vain idiot turns, sees the giant second bug, and his nostrils flare in absolute annoyance.

from gross to diva in two seconds.

"oh HELL NO," he hisses before pointing right at the giant snake coming at him, like it means nothing to him all of the sudden. "i'm over it! i did not sign up for this job to end up a bug's fuckin' meal!"

knowing what that pointing meant by dealing with leyon for long enough, his sylveon shoots out yet another moonbeam and his togekiss begins to swirl the air around it for an air slash. on, and the little ones? since his pokémon are busy, he takes matters into his own physical hands. er, well, feet.

stomping on one of their heads, he grinds it into the ground with gritting teeth.

"back the fuck up!" he warns the others. "or you're all next! see that big thing? blame that! we didn't crash in here on purpose, dammit!"

the bug beneath his feet was practically screeching help me before, SPLAT.

Story of his fucking life. In many ways, Gideon defied the typical intellectual stereotype. He could be careless and absent-minded, at the expense of his own well-being. Now was a perfect example.

He allowed his brother to pull him away from immediate danger, but his attention was still on all of the insect-like Pokémon swarming the crater. In particular, the small ones at their feet that leyon cœur was now crushing under a slew of cuss words.

Gideon understood the ranger's reaction - to a degree. Most people had an instinctual aversion to these sorts of animals. But they were harmless, by and large, as evidenced by the way the professor picked a few up in his bare hands.

"Distract the queen while I collect these samples." He instructed his TYRANITAR, but really it applied to the other men as well. A few glass jars later and he'd have enough specimens to slake his curiosity... for now.
