The premonition granted by the prayer would reveal that the shrine was closer to where they were going in Route 119 from Mauville Bay. Much as the Absol’s Quick Attack was gaining the speed, Sayori couldn’t keep up with how fast the Raikou was running, so the heavy rain from the thunderstorm dropped against her fur as the dark type heard the crackling split of trees. Red eyes from the feline dark type narrow when one of the lightning strikes from the Raikou bolting through the rainforest would block the path in following after the beast.[break][break]

From her belt, the trainee gym trainer sends out her Mimikyu to do the job of dealing with the obstacle. “Alastor, use Shadow Claw to clear the way if you would.” A nod comes from the small ghostly copycat as his claws come out of the shadows to slash at the tree in an attempt to make the pathway clear for both the gym leader and his employed gym trainer to get through.

The Mimikyu's SHADOW CLAW, with its incredible reach, turned the fallen trees to splinters as the Absol and Manectric carried Raikou's purusers through the rainforest. While the trail was a winding one, it was only moderately so. Lack of visibility remained the limiting factor for pursuing the legendary Pokémon Josh desired an audience with more than anything else. The fairy-type would find his precision put to a greater and greater test; as the Raikou put more distance between them, the riders would reach each individual tree with more of it already on fire from the divine lightning strikes.

A wide and deep gorge was coming up fast as knight and princess rounded a curve, both of them catching a glimpse of Raikou making a graceful leap that nearly reached the bottom of the canopy. "Wow..." the Gym Leader gasped in awe. "I've never seen a Pokémon jump that high before." A great lightning bolt outside the range of Saber's LIGHTNING ROD struck the wooden bridge as the Beast landed, clearly in an effort to shake its pursuers. Josh wasn't one to give up so easily, though. He had been chasing this Pokémon for thirteen years, and this is the closest he had ever been to his dream. It burst inside him with great pain, motivating him even more to relieve that pain by living said dream.

"Hold on with everything you've got, Elise! We're flooring it! Saber, QUICK ATTACK!" Rather than taking the slower path around the gorge or at least finding a narrower crossing, Josh ordered his Manectric to go as hast as he could. In an equally dramatic leap, the electric-type soared over the ravine, getting a great look at the Beast's glowing thundercloud.

AU: An alternate Hoenn timeline in while the Kanto Rocket Invasion was unsuccessful, meaning Kanto is intact.

The obstacle was cleared and with it out of the way, she could move further with her employer towards the thundercloud. Pressing the button to return Alastor the Mimikyu back inside his Pokeball, the young dark magenta haired woman uses the reins on her Absol to follow Saber. “Let’s do the same with Quick Attack!” Sayori’s speed goes as fast as possible to catch up with the electric type canine as the Quick Attack lets her reach blinding speed like a cannon shooting into the sky. In an attempt to do what Josh taught her in her training orientation as a gym trainer, she used the experience to have Sayori soar over the ravine along with Saber with picking up a bit more speed. The Absol ends up landing gracefully on ground when she tries to catch up with the thundercloud along with the Manectric. She actually felt the adrenaline rushing through her veins when she made the jump, the fact that her Absol did it well was a beginning mark that Elise had tried to use what Josh told her on the first day of being a gym trainer.

Faster and faster the Absol and Manectric ran, trails of their own images appearing behind them as they made up ground against the Raikou testing them. It was clear by now that the Raikou's purpose was to roam Hoenn, testing the most elite of the region by allowing them to get close before bolting away. Was the legendary testing Josh's power? His courage? His tenacity? Perhaps a combination of them all.

A bright flash, followed by an almost instant and deafening thunderclap, brought to the forefront of the Leader's mind a vivid nightmare, in retrospect perhaps a prophecy, of what was happening before his eyes now. His skin tingled as though lightning could strike around him any moment. While Saber's LIGHTNING ROD would keep them both safe against any stray lightning bolts or electric attacks from the Beast, it wasn't any less unnerving. It was that very vision that inspired Josh to develop the fastest Z-Move in Hoenn: HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE.

The wind howled around the Gym Leader and Gym Trainer as they kept up their blistering pace. While the terrain was different, the encounter was frighteningly similar to that vision. He was sweating under his helmet's visor; if Raikou didn't find Josh worthy, could he survive the battle? In that vision, he saw Aslan, his Pyroar, die before his eyes. Would the life of one of his Pokémon be the price he had to pay? It all weighed heavily on his mind as the right turn toward Fortree came into sight. They were outpacing Raikou for now, though Josh was fully aware there was simply no outrunning this Beast. Not without the help of a Z-Move that he thought would flatten Elise from just how intense its acceleration was, anyway.

The blurs of images of the Manectric and the Absol were a sight to see if people were there watching the two trainers use their Pokemon’s speed to catch up to the legendary electric type Pokemon. Seeing the speed of the thunder cat run through the blur of her Absol running in tandem with Saber. the female royal would need a lot more speed to attempt to get to Raikou. Her eyes saw the terrain becoming different, so she’ll have time to do a little advantage in their speedy chase.[break][break]

“Prepare yourself, Sayori! We’ll use your mega evolution for a little speed up.” She spoke down to her dark type as the light of her Mega Tiara’s keystone shines in resonance to the Absolite around the neck of the female Absol. With how royal looking her black tiara looked atop her head, the gym trainer appeared to be a princess riding on her feline steed. Sayori’s form changes in tune to the Absolite’s glow into a Mega Absol and it was the Absol’s turn to speed herself up with Quick Attack![break][break]

The MEGA EVOLUTION from Sayori made her faster. Much faster. While they still could not fully keep up with Raikou, they could keep the Beast in sight. It forced Josh to spur Saber into a QUICK ATTACK chain. The woods whipped past the two like a green and brown strobe light, their racing skills from having taken many Gym challengers at Mauville a critical factor in being able to control the speed.[break][break]

As the two were about to turn the corner to Fortree City, they had caught up to the Raikou, a familiar small shrine in view. "Wow, Elise," Josh gasped, seeing the Beast at peace next to the historical landmark. It meant a lot to him. If it weren't for Elinor Anderson helping him fight off those thugs, Josh never would have become a Ranger in the first place. Nor would he have become a Gym Leader. "It's all come full circle now. You see, Elise, it was here that I took my first steps on the path as a Gym Leader, and where my chase began. It's incredible that it may just end here." The PRESSURE was intimidating, but this was something he had spent the last decade and more of his life preparing for.[break][break]

It was all for this moment. Josh slowly guided his Manectric closer to Raikou, its red eyes staring him down. He recited the Great One's Prayer in front of the legendary creature before him.

"O Great One, hallowed bird of rainbow colors, thy will be done, Impart me with thine FORESIGHT, thine JUDGMENT, and thine INSIGHT to carry out thy will, and to deliver Hoenn from thine enemies. O Great One, impart thy faithful servant with the Blessing of Thunder, and make me a messenger of the new kingdom to come. A kingdom where your Blessed serve your Great Will for ever and ever. Amen."

In response to the prayer, the Beast opened his maw and loosed a powerful roar that could be heard for miles. Electricity flew from Raikou's crown. It was clear to Josh what it wanted and why it allowed him to get so close. The Gym Leader slid off his Manectric's back and came closer on foot. "Great Raikou, I would want no more than to serve you in protecting Johto and Hoenn. Those who have invaded your homeland will be back. I, too, have a vested interest in doing all I can to burn their forces to the ground. Allow me to join forces with you. Please, Great Raikou, hear me..."[break][break]

THE GREAT RAIKOU INDEED LISTENS to Josh Devlin 's plight. A ring of lightning bolts encircles Josh Devlin , Elise Calcifet , and the shrine's immediate vicinity is a sign of the RAIKOU initiating trial by combat. The skies flash rapidly with the plasma composing the Beast's divine lightning, the swirling storm intensifying by the moment. With speed impossible for even the Master of Faster to react to, it thrusts a paw into his face, then Elise's in the next split second. The pain is searing. While they both remain conscious, they suffer HEAVY BLOWS.[break][break]

The MEGA ABSOL and MANECTRIC rush to defend their trainers in a violent battle of thunder, lightning, and blistering speed. It is only their experience working at a Gym that specializes in speed that lets them follow the action at all. Their foe's aggression makes it abundantly clear that the RAIKOU is not holding anything back. With the ring of lightning circling Josh Devlin and Elise Calcifet , and the storm's intensifying downdrafts making flight almost impossible, escape would be extremely unlikely.[break][break]

Raikou leaps into a thundercloud, surrounds the target in a vortex of lightning, then strikes from the cloud as a living lightning bolt, dealing extreme damage to the target and paralyzing it. Afterward, Raikou's speed is MAXIMIZED.

The female Absol growls at the Raikou giving a heavy blow to the face of her trainer as the royal suffered a heavy blow with pain shooting onto her body. Raikou himself was not joking around, he was serious in testing them both if they could survive the circle of lightning that now surrounded both of them. “It looks like we are both being tested by the thunder beast himself.” Elise grits her teeth in pain from the attack from Raikou’s paw earlier though she tries to think of what they have to do now to get out from being eletrocuted.[break][break]

Elise gets knocked off her mount by the Raikou’s Quick Attack which was too fast to follow in going out of the way, so she falls face first on the ground. Her Absol runs over to her to nudge her back up though the female royal feels the searing pain course through her body. She had to get up onto her Absol again, so that she could work with Josh to get out of the ring of lightning which was closing on them.

Josh was staring down a dream come true. But would it be a dream, or would it be a nightmare? Electric tiger and electric wolf, two different incarnations of the same Johtonian myth, stared down one another in what would almost certainly be a brutal and bloody battle between two of the fastest speed demons in the world. With the circle of lightning bolts surrounding them, flight was no longer an option.

Fight was the only option.

"N-no k-kidding," Josh stuttered, the Galarian never having seen the normally confident Master of Faster so nervous throughout the entire course of their friendship and business relationship. Holding his Pokémon's reins deftly, Josh was ready to slam his heels into Saber's flanks in a QUICK ATTACK that would interrupt whatever Raikou was doing. There was simply no outspeeding Raikou, the thundercat ramming Elise Calcifet and flinging her off her Absol with a QUICK ATTACK of its own.

Taking his eyes off Raikou for a split second, the Gym Leader slid off his Manectric's back just long enough to reach down to Elise with a hand extended, helping her to her feet. That split second was all Raikou needed, lunging at Saber at the speed of lightning and baring down on the electric wolf's snout with CRUNCHING fangs that caused a fountain of blood to erupt between the dog's red eyes.

Giving a thankful nod to the Mauville gym leader when she takes his hand to get up from the ground, the royal turns to the Raikou and gets onto her Absol again. “Thank you, Josh.” Thanking her friend for helping her up, Sayori notes that the Raikou’s power was beyond of what she was capable of, both in strength and speed. Since the thunder cat was a Legendary Pokemon, this would make sense that they would be in a fight or die situation with the lightning circle slowly closing in on both of them. [break][break]

Elise sends out her Dragonite to help with defeating Raikou as Saffira rushes in with a Fire Punch. The legendary thunder cat takes the punch head on though he is not affected by the move and delivers a resistance-ignoring blow with a Thunderbolt. A grunt of pain comes from the female Dragonite as she shuts her eyes from the bolt coursing through her body though the dragon type Pokemon isn’t going to back down from a harder challenge.

Josh didn't have time to answer Elise Calcifet ; their foe's surreal speed demanded the Gym Leader's complete attention. The THUNDERBOLT's ferocity was unlike anything he had ever seen, striking Saffira with paralyzing electricity that coursed through the dragon just as effectively as it would against a water-type or flying-type. Even Saber's LIGHTNING ROD did not stop the electric blast, Gym Leader and partner forced back as the electrical overload left the Manectric on the brink of collapse.

Pushed to the brink himself, Josh clutched Saber's reins tightly. With escape impossible and the windows for counterattacks small thanks to the legendary Beast's supernatural speed and reaction time, the racer put all his cards on the table. "HYPERSONIC..."

Josh's Z-GLOVE glowed yellow, as did the QUICKINIUM-Z hidden beneath the electric wolf's fur. The energy of their bond flowed together as the rider crossed his mount's reins as part of his Z-Pose. He finished it by flicking them back to their normal position and digging his heels into Saber's flanks.

"...PLASMA CHARGE!!!"

With speed so intense that not even the legendary Beast could react to, Josh's skin stretched against his face, his chin turning red as the force behind the acceleration nearly caused the bone to pierce his skin. Suffering a significant blow, the Raikou looked agitated. If it was holding back before, it definitely wasn't holding back now!

AU: An alternate Hoenn timeline in while the Kanto Rocket Invasion was unsuccessful, meaning Kanto is intact.

When Elise sees Josh do his Z-move, the speed of his Manectric became so fast that the acceleration made it difficult for the ambassador and her Absol to follow where he and his mount were. The Hypersonic Plasma Charge would be able to hit the Raikou for a large blow that the legendary beast couldn’t follow where the gym leader and his canine were. Since the legendary Pokemon was now agitated, Raikou set his sights on Elise and her Pokemon.[break][break]

With a roar, the big thunder cat lunges to knock the royal ambassador off of her dark type mount. When the Raikou does use his paw to push Elise off, the ambassador is thrown back on the ground and feels the pain from her ankle being sprained. Her vision becomes blurry as her mega evolved Absol approaches her to help her up. Saffira the Dragonite tries to attack the Raikou with Ice Punch, but the bigger feline is able to dodge the icy blow from the female dragon.

As tragic was it was, Josh could not hear Elise Calcifet over the loud, thunderous sonic explosions surrounding them, dancing lightning bolts keeping them. Even without the noise, the pain of his facial injuries made him thump. It was miserable to endure. The human body simply was not designed to travel at the kind of speed his Pokémon's Z-Move could carry him at. It was a harsh reminder of his own Gym's lesson in his pursuit of the ultimate creature of speed:

"With great speed comes great responsibility."

With a deafening roar, the cage of lightning bolts trapping the two of them dissipated, the Raikou's thundercloud and faceplate glowing brilliant yellows and whites. Giant bolts of electricity arced from it to the ground around him, instantly reducing whatever foliage they touched to ash. Leaves, stalks, wood... no matter how tough it was, fried to cinders in an instant. This was their chance to escape.

It was only when Josh turned around that he saw Elise struggling to stand to her feet a second time. With Sayori helping her stand, the Mauville Leader called out to her. "Run! Run while you can!" he urged. Josh himself wasn't going anywhere. Seated on his Manectric, the Gym Leader braced himself for impact, trusting in his oldest and most loyal Pokémon's LIGHTNING ROD to absorb or deflect whatever electrical maelstrom Raikou had prepared to unleash upon them. He had come too far to run away now.

If Raikou was looking for courage, Josh would give Raikou a display of it. But was it courage, or was it sacrificial foolhardiness?

Through the lightning that the Raikou summons would come down from the dark skies, Elise had to drag her leg up while she tries to position herself in riding onto the back of her Absol. The legendary beast of thunder was dangerous now since she was injured and her Pokemon were not fast enough to keep up with the bigger cat. “Yes, we should leave now.” Elise agrees with Josh’s suggestion. Sayori the Absol takes the lead in getting her trainer out of the Raikou’s range when the beast tries to charge up its Z-move.[break][break]

Though Elise had felt that her position as a princess born to the Calcifet family left her with some doubts over leaving Galar to go to Hoenn especially when her country was dealing with disaster relief, the female royal keeps herself up with the grace of a royal. Her Dragonite joins her in flight and Saffira would keep the injured royal safe while they make their escape.[break][break]

Something tells the purple-haired princess that Raikou wouldn’t be done with Josh yet. He may have been testing him for granting his powers.

THE GYM LEADER AND GALARIAN ROYAL bravely battle the Beast. Elise Calcifet 's fearless DRAGONITE charges the RAIKOU, striking it with ELEMENTAL PUNCH after ELEMENTAL PUNCH to slow the ultrafast feline down. Even with the dragon's aggression, Josh Devlin 's MANECTRIC is the one the legendary Pokémon's full attention falls upon, its QUICK ATTACK met with a THUNDERBOLT that not even a well-honed LIGHTNING ROD can bend.[break][break]

DESPITE BEING ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE, the MANECTRIC courageously makes his last stand: a Z-MOVE: HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE, fueled by its unbreakable bond with Josh Devlin . Spurring the electric wolf to supersonic speed with almost cruel strength, they barrel toward the RAIKOU. They weren't the only electric Pokémon armed with Z-POWER: RAIKOU, too, has prepared his own equally fast Z-MOVE.[break][break]

EVEN AS Josh Devlin AND HIS MANECTRIC become surrounded by a dust corona, their hearing vanishing during the charge, the RAIKOU intercepts the Z-MOVE with one of his own: the Z-MOVE: TACHYON TEMPEST. Two overlapping sonic booms wash over Elise Calcifet and her ABSOL, knocking them to the ground and delaying their retreat. The first sound the Master of Faster hears after the clash of Z-Moves is an unnatural screech from his MANECTRIC, a fountain of blood erupting from the maelstrom's point of impact. No matter the effort to patch up the yellow-and-blue canine, it SUCCUMBS TO ITS WOUNDS AND DIES.[break][break]

JUST AS SUDDENLY AS THE MAELSTROM STARTED, the purple clouds raging above the RAIKOU parts, the sun's rays illuminating the shrine. All is calm; on the far side of the passing storm, the wind is still. Even the embodiment of lightning before Josh Devlin , the Johtonian god of speed, looks on with a stern but calm expression. It stares at the Gym Leader, then shifts his eyes toward Elise Calcifet . Never taking its eyes off either one of them, it walks close to Josh, sitting on its hind legs and lowering his gray crown toward him. The Beast beckons for the courageous to place their palms against it.
