Admin Fox sat in one of the many swivel chairs dotted around the conference room's table. He hadn't said a word since the four admins had assembled. Instead, he wordlessly flipped a page of his newspaper.

It didn't come as a surprise that the historian would use a positively outdated piece of media. Everything in his office was positively ancient. His phone was a brick, his laptop a lethal weapon, and nobody had ever seen his desktop, but it was presumably the same; an ancient object that was best kept in a museum instead of being used by an admin.

He flipped the page of the newspaper again. His eye peeked above the ridges of the paper towards his three colleagues.

When was the last time all four of them had assembled? His promotion? The last avalanche of paperwork? Each of them ran a different aspect of Rocket's organization. Smuggling, forgery, offensive training, public relations. Occasionally they intersected, but not very often.

"This is a pickle." Howard finally said as he tossed his newspaper onto the conference table. The front headline was clear.

Dynamax is Soot-out-polis! Strange Barriers Seen Around Ever Grande and Sootopolis!

Calyrex's royal proclamation had gotten Rocket's attention. With Dynamax no longer possible within Sootopolis, Howard could visibly relax. Dynamaxing in a population center was a disaster waiting to happen.

"Calyrex actually did something! I knew that king was capable of something if he put his mind to it." He beamed at his colleagues as he tapped the newspaper. "What do you guys think? This is huge!"

[break][break] Jayden's expression is hopelessly affectionate as he holds the door open for his lover — or perhaps, as affectionate as the Offense admin had ever known to be. Normally, Jayden is cut-throat and to-the-point when it comes to all matters of professionalism, however the recent weeks since his impromptu visit from Father Winter 2 - Dionysus - has changed him in the most imperceptible of ways. Or perceptible, if you were really someone who knew him.

[break][break] He holds the chair out for as well, before settling into one just next to him. It does not seem to bother him at all, how insufferable he is being. What does bother him, however, is the claim that makes.

[break][break] "Pickles?" he echoes, nose wrinkling in confusion. "That's a newspaper article."

[break][break] But the headline - while pertinent - is not his current concern. With sequestered and safe (and more importantly by his side), there is a bigger issue at play. Jayden slides a manila folder of his own across the table, flipping it open.

"What's all the buzz about, Fox?"[break][break]

From where sat — heels propped up on the table and swivel chair arched back to its maximum angle — he craned his neck to get a better view of the newspaper's headline.[break][break]

It was a welcome distraction from 's insufferable puppy-like behavior, following around as he did. Wasn't he supposed to be the embodiment of hatred? Of cold, felid rage?[break][break]

Barnaby almost wished for a repeat of the events that led to 's Avatarship in that moment.[break][break]

"Mmm. It doesn't bode well for the future." Anytime something fantastical happened near-calamity almost always followed. There were bound to be losses on their side of things.[break][break]

To Jayden's question, Barnaby posed, "If Calyrex is involved... Necrozma? Eternatus?"[break][break]

Or both. A repeat of the events that happened in that poisoned Galar?[break][break]

The admin nearly shuddered at the thought.

"An expression, darling," they remark dryly as they breeze into the conference room behind . Their tone lacks much inflection, but is somewhat teasing, given away by the small curl at the corner of their mouth. "It means we have a dilemma on our hands."[break][break]
Really, though, their mind is in the present - an exasperated huff slips out as Jayden fumbles to pull out their chair before they can get to it themself. Still, they slip into it while also thinking that they could have managed the simple feat just fine on their own.[break][break]
He has been like this constantly as of late.[break][break]
"I do think the barriers make for a useful fortification." they agree with . And selfishly, when it comes to Sootopolis, they would prefer their home unsquashed by some pink zeppelin of a dynamaxed jigglypuff. Or similar.[break][break]
It is the news Jayden supplies that dampens their amusement. "Agreed," their glance flits to and then back to the file.[break][break]
"It'd probably be only a matter of time before Eternatus shows up, right?"[break][break]
It would make sense, wouldn't it? Their nose wrinkles in distaste. They don't remember much now of their time spent in the alternate Galar, but much of that last battle lingers - not at all quick to fade. "Did Calyrex share anything with any of you lot?" Fern had steered clear.[break][break]
At the time, they hadn't been sure if it was the same Calyrex, but they hadn't exactly helped it so much as sped up its death the last time they had encountered it - if it was.

The admin made a point to not roll his eye at Barnaby and Jayden's lack of pickle knowledge.

"Calyrex did a lot of listening, not much talking. I taught it about Galarian royal policy for four hours. Said nothing the whole time."

The admin blinked once, as if the sentence he just uttered was perfectly reasonable. It was, to an extent. He had lectured Calyrex for hours upon hours. With Howard's predecessor comfortably sitting with the League, there were few in Rocket who knew Galar's history as well as Howard.

Unfortunately, that meant that Howard's successor was probably teaching Calyrex all sorts of delightful things.

Joy.

"Eternatus. The king has outlawed Dynamax within Sootopolis. I suspect it has done the same for Ever Grande." The admin wasn't in the Galarian dream, but he had derived its purpose from hazy accounts and the ancient runes that were etched into the Island Cave. "Regice has activated. We should assume the worst, that Eternatus is rousing."

An eerie thought. Necrozma was responsible for much devastation, and Eternatus was far worse. At least Rocket had a leash on Necrozma, for now.

"I've heard that Calyrex issued a royal proclamation for us. It will likely help in the war against Eternatus. The future is fucked, anyway. All we can do is prepare."

The admin made a face.

"Dynamax will likely prove unreliable. Everytime we get involved with it, we get burned."

[break][break] The reminder of Galar's horrors is enough to draw the Cursed away from the boundless affection that he lavished on . He withdraws, expression seamlessly transitioning back into his cold, authoritative demeanor. It was almost as if such indulgence had never occurred — well, except for the tight grip the admin had on his beloved's hand underneath the table.

[break][break] "Not with me."

[break][break] But it was enough for to provide her account, as well as other Rockets who had shared their stories with the old Galarian king.

[break][break] "Whether Eternatus is rising or not, we know at least one thing."

[break][break] His expression was grim.

[break][break] "We need to prepare for war." With that, Jayden pulls another manila folder, full of data on their latest recruits and the increase in their training regimen. "I've already added a new comprehensive training regimen for our recruits, focusing on enhancing their combat skills. It's only a matter of time before they strike."

[break][break] Whether it's by ETERNATUS or the League or some other command — the method would be the same.

[break][break] "I'll speak to and the other Beasts to add the inclusion of SPECTRA's expertise in our training schedule. And reach out to Underboss Beckett about increasing the defense around our city borders. I can also speak to the Kanto branch to increase our numbers too."

[break][break] After all, he'd dragged over not so recently, hadn't he?

[break][break] The admin's gaze then flickered over to Admin Fox's bitter expression, when the topic of Dynamax was breached.

[break][break] "We don't need Dynamax," he said. "We already have powerful avatars on our side — more than a few." His head glanced towards , reminded of how the other had spoken freely of the DRK Triad. "What we need is power in numbers. Admin Bee, what is the status on getting in touch with Malcedena?"

[break][break] After all, having another force like the DRK Triad on their side could prove to be useful, even if it was a stretch.
