It was all much too chaotic for him to follow along—but he is gladdened to see Furor responding to his commands, its tail managing to wallop the shard of Yveltal during the tumult. It falls from out of the sky, and manages to clumsily grace Josh with another contact—unwittingly freeing him. Neither he nor Thomas would immediately respond.

Adrian distances himself from the combat, and Gyarados does not advance recklessly. Thomas' pokemon thrash and wail on the beast, relentless in their zealotry. He suspected Thomas wouldn't hesitate to sic them on him, once they removed the existing threat.

The statues affected by the battle tremble and break, shattering with the heavy impacts of their battling. Adrian feels fear for Josh, though rather than act emboldened, he retreats—fearing the power Yveltal brandishes so brazenly... But that does not mean he cannot attack

"Thomas, call them off," Adrian manages to bark out while crossing his arms in front of his chest, accompanied by a strange geometric shape emanating shadows on his wrist, as Gyarados shimmers faintly like amethyst: Invoking this power, he hoped to help banish the creature away, and buy them some time...

"ALRIGHT, FUROR: BLACK HOLE ECLIPSE!"[break][break]

From out of its maw, a light-eating aura appeared before being violently ejected, hurtling across the field before approaching Yveltal. There the manifestation surged, its energy resonating in a violent surge as it expanded, drowning them in darkness. As if veiled in some benighted gossamer, everything seemed drawn into the hole—the shard of Yveltal most of all.

Adrian Malcolm 's BLACK HOLE ECLIPSE would indeed banish the Yveltal back to its grounds deeper within The Border. With its disappearance, many souls it kept trapped within the endless graveyard escaped from their stony prisons. His eyes shifted about the graveyard to look for one he would instantly recognized when fortune favored his sight: SHAWN RICHARDS.

"Shawn! Shawn!!" Josh dashed toward the crumbling status, revealing a floating, spiritual manifestation of the former Gym Trainer. Next to him materialized former head of security NATHAN MARTINEZ. "Nathan!" he called out. He repeated the names of the other Gym staff, students, and Gym attendees that died that day. Their eyes locked with the Gym Leader's, smiling at seeing him live his dream in their last moments within The Border.

He was riding Raikou. Not the Raikou they were familiar with when they were alive, but the facial resemblance was there.

With solemn bows and slight smiles, their spirits left the realm. "Shawn... Nathan... everyone. I'll avenge you. I will bring dorian westcliff to justice by my own hands. Now... rest in peace." With that, he faced both Thomas Benoit and Adrian Malcolm . "Thank you... both of you. Even you," he pointed to the Rocket. "You saved my--"

Josh would be interrupted by a MARSHADOW leaping from Raikou's shadow onto the saddle he sat in. The ghost-type hijacked the paradox Pokémon from him, dashing away from the rift's entrance. "You get back here!" Josh cried, clicking the switch on one of his Cherish Ball. "Entei! Let's go!" The Gouging Fire from within crouched to let him on, giving chase with the same speed as his Johtonian counterpart!

The sight of his Pokemon wailing on 'Yveltal' filled Thomas with a dark sense of satisfaction. Though the question was, how long would it last? How long, until the Shard broke free, and attacked again.

The sight of some of the statues breaking apart, including the one of the Buzzwole, caused Thomas to turn back to Josh, who had finally broken free of his stony prison.

Thomas wanted to give Adrian the middle finger, when told to pull back. But upon seeing what he was about to do, turned back to his Pokemon. "Fall back! Now!", Thomas called out to them.

The trio did as they were told. Mordred leaped off the back of the Yveltal Shard, dashing over to Artanis. Upon reaching the Paradox Pokemon, Mordred took them into the Phantom Force, safely away from the blast radius. The Iron Crown, thanks to them already being at a distance, had little trouble clearing the Black Hole Eclipse.

Thomas watched the short reunion play out, before the ghosts moved onto the afterlife.

Then, the sight of a Marshadow hijacking Josh's ride made Thomas chuckle. A bit of levity never hurt.

Thomas then turned to the unconcsious Buzzwole. The former Elite Four tapped the Ultra Beast with a Pokeball, hoping it'd stick.

In the aftermath, Adrian would find fresh air relieving the ache in his lungs. What a mess... While everything might have ended as well as he could've hoped—something else was wrong here, entirely. But he can only make note of this as he observe's Josh' wistful farewell; souls with an eerie glow, ephemeral by their nature, flitted through the air as they egressed.

Why would Yveltal trap souls here, and not see them move on?

"...You're welcome..." It was strange accepting their gratitude.

Gyarados would feel the tension hanging in the air around its trainer, leering at the others, though as Adrian managed to take a few steps backwards, the creature betrayed no signs of aggression. But before they could clear earshot, Adrian couldn't help chuckling as the two salvaged what they could from this incident. Never a passed opportunity...

"Thomas..." He tried to think of comforting words of reassurance, but there could be none. So instead he found himself expressing what was likely a shared opinion, after today's events.

"Something went wrong here... We should try to find out why."

Locking eyes with them, he hoped it was clear; they should both try to understand this development from their respective sides. Why had Yveltal petrified these departed souls? It was almost dysfunctional, and he could only imagine what other problems may arise from a force of nature running itself off the rails. There were too many enemies to Hoenn who might've had a hand in this matter for him to pinpoint any one...

Raikou skillfully weaved among the petrified humans and Pokémon, getting into a more open part of the expanse and turn around. The Marshadow relied on the Raging Bolt's speed to escape, the paradox matching Swift's speed. Were Adrian Malcolm not present, Josh would have used the ashen Beast to catch up to the ancient counterpart. In the presence of both Thomas and Adrian, neither of which were League staff, that wasn't an option.

The electric dragon about-faced and zoomed toward them in a horrific WILD CHARGE that would have made any other rider's nose bleed. "Entei, BURNING BULWARK!" Josh ordered, the Gouging Fire slowing down to repel the disgustingly fast electric attack. His crown held, the deceleration force making the Marshadow dizzy. Without hesitation, the Gym Leader hurled an Ultra Ball toward the ghost-type, Raikou coming out of his trance. "You okay, Raikou?" Josh asked, the paradox responding with a purr indistinguishable from rumbling thunder.

Still on the fire-type's back, Josh turned around, Raikou following him back toward Thomas -- and the rift back to Hoenn. "Thank you, Thomas... thank you so much. I couldn't have done it without you... and Entei. Now, let's go home. You're more than welcome to saddle up with me if you want."

With the pandemonium having come to an end, and Josh's friends having passed on, Thomas began to mull over what happened. Why did Yveltal trap their souls, rather than allow them to pass on? Were they there as bait? Was the Shard of Yveltal somehow compromised?

With the Buzzwole captured, Thomas pocketed the Pokeball.

Thomas looked to Adrian. Though he held onto his hard feelings, he realized that if they were to get answers on what transpired, then the only way to get them was to work together.

"You're right.", Thomas answered, the curse having subsided earlier.

"I appreciate the offer, but unless Adrian here needs a lift, I'll stick around a bit longer. We got some questions that need answers.", he told the Champion.

With the matter settled, Adrian is able to make his departure peacefully. Thomas wishes to investigate the border further—and he may be right to do so, especially now that Yveltal's intervention had been forestalled.

But more than anything, he wishes to pry into Rocket's records. There are those within the organization with tethers to the beasts of ruin—or so he would have heard. If some malefactor was causing this, they might have the necessary insight...

Not that he felt he could trust them.

Even Thomas was more deserving of his trust—fickle fealties be damned. As Adrian disappears along the horizon, he can't help but hope that Thomas—as resourceful as he was—didn't try to tackle this on his own. They could achieve more together than alone.
