Bo merely shook his head.

“Again!”

They were spamming. He also knew, by now, although Nidoking would be vulnerable to the EARTHQUAKE and struck, it would take a little more to faint it. For now, they could take the hit in favor of continuing their assault. The beast did its best to focus its energy even as it struggled against cracking ground.

EARTH POWER struck out for a fourth time around the Excadrill. By this point, its defense-lowering qualities would hopefully have made their vulnerable enough to succumb. Bo watched expectantly, confident as ever.

The cries of his Nidoking’s pain rang out, but he couldn’t hear it through his invisible anger.

A dark side flashed.

Bo found himself curious, but knew better than to ask.

Mostly, he wondered who his son was. He felt it better not to ask that, either. That was probably private information, and Bo of all people could respect it.

That, he didn’t want to know.

“Uh, yeah. I will.” A nod.

He turned after returning his pokemon.

“Good luck with everything, Bill.” He wasn’t sure what it meant, or how it'd be interpreted, and regretted saying it almost immediately. His voice deflated a little with a sigh. “Sure I’ll see ya some time.”

With that, he shoved one hand into his pocket, gave a weak wave with the other, and headed leisurely in the opposite direction.

Bo watched the Poipole sail up through the air, only to be returned. The match was called. They’d won, and grinned a bit sideways.

“Good work, girl!”

A pokeball was held out, and Golem was recalled into it.

Then, Fernando Silph was complimenting her. Pride welled in Bo’s chest, and he nodded. Of course, he already knew the Pokemon’s strength. She’d been with him the longest.

“Thanks, Mr. Silph. I’m lucky to have her. She’s the strongest one on my team. I’m sure she appreciated the challenge.”

Bo was surprised, and it showed in the way his head kicked back an inch. Work for his son? Faces flashed through his mind as he attempted to put it together. What was Bill’s last name again?

“Do I?”

At Bill’s offer, Bo turned his chin suspiciously, eyes cutting a little. Surely, Bill only feared for his safety because he was into some sort of shady business.

“Not so sure if that’s a good idea, Bill. Sorry.”

The TOXIC spray that jet from the spider was well-aimed, but splattered against the beautifully shifting colors of the ice-type’s shield. She called out to her opponent triumphantly, encouraging another assault.

There was another glow as rocks rose from the ground out of the sand. "ROCK THROW," Bo commanded, and it sent them launching towards the arachnid. Aurorus remained in place, not attempting to keep up with the movement of her opponent.

Bo was pretty good at sports, and dodgeball was no exception. His Pokemon, however? They’d yet to play, and only time would tell.

They all stood around him—an odd, mismatched crew of competitors, built of a selection which might’ve mystify onlookers. Bo had chosen them at random, really. It was who he’d brought, and this was more for fun than anything.

Vic’s grin was matched, and he called out, “Ya ready?”

Dewgong bound back onto the beach, thankfully not hit by the horseshoe incoming in that direction, as it was ringed around the post successfully.

“Nice!” Bo called out, always having been one to show good sportsmanship.

Dewgong handed the horseshoe in her mouth of to him, and he swung with his right arm again—easily making a perfect shot. He was good at this, as with most sports. The Mahers were an athletic family, although would beat him out in a foot race any day of the week.

He gave a laid back smile and looked over at his opponent, taking a swig.

“Hey, I forgot to introduce myself, man. Name’s Bo.”

Another FOUL PLAY hit the Munchlax, damaging it almost to the point of fainting. Finally, the pain was settling into its otherwise confused face. However, in a moment, it seemed to shake off its CONFUSION—perhaps finally knocked into sense by Sableye’s attacks.

Bo watched carefully, still, even as hetook the can offered from Giona and gave a friendly 'thanks'.

“Huh. That sounds nice, although I don’t know how long he’d stay awake. Worth a shot…” Lately, the Munchlax had been sleeping more and more. Growing, maybe?

Now, it began to glow ominously. And then, all of the sudden, an immense amount of power exploded onto the Sableye—and everything around. LAST RESORT blasted away sand, and everything on the ground surrounding. Beach balls; bags; umbrellas; chairs. Things ripped apart, and their makeshift ‘arena’ was effectively blown to bits with sand parting to potholes in the dirt, and powdered lines all but turned over.

THE BATTLEFIELD WAS DESTROYED.

Bo’s eyebrows were high on his head. “Damn.” He looked over at Giona. “Sorry. Didn’t see that one coming.”

Bo watched silently. Any of his other pokemon, he might’ve commanded them to get out. The opponent had closed in. It was never a good sign when they settled into the same move. It meant it was working too well.

But Golem had things under control, and he knew it.

The Incineroar’s DARKEST LARIAT hit again, leaving the Golem literally crumbling at the edges, but she wouldn’t stay down put to be beat into her demise. Instead, she retaliated suddenly, body and eyes glowing with earthy energy as large boulders arose from the ground.

A SUPER-EFFECTIVE ROCK THROW would seek to knock back the cat’s assault and damage it further.

Bo snorted a laugh, caught off guard by the sexton’s comment, and agreeing, “Yeah, no shit.” The Dracovish was then returned, not one to ever be left out for long due to its aggression issues.

Armaldo was next to be released. The fossil-type gave a confused, strange sound, looking around and seeming a bit out of sorts. Bo pointed to steer its attention towards the target.

Catching on, the oversized shrimp lizard waddled over and threw a CRUSH CLAW across the target.

While Emma was in a poor state, Bo had no intention of disrespecting her by holding back. Emma was one of Rocket’s strongest forces, and even the small size of her Ariados in comparison to Aurorus did nothing to give him any sense of advantage. He was no fool—except for maybe sometimes, actually. That one with had been a doozie.

But not now.

Aurorus had difficulty keeping track of the Ariados as it shot towards them with AGILITY. It would be not be able to match the spider’s speed—not even by a longshot, now.

“LIGHT SCREEN.”

The move had already been in progress, flashing around the Aurorus brilliantly. Bo would make it a point to call out his commands, even if it was unnecessary.

The match ended, and the opposing team lied about in sandy wreckage, all in different states of defeat. Bo’s eyes met the minister’s again, and he grinned.

“Thanks, Bill. Good job guys!” he called to his team, and they all cried out in victory, especially the Dewgong, who was very competitive and excited for beach games whenever such opportunities had presented themselves during the festivities.

It had occurred to Bo that Bill would be unaware of his status as a ranger. He was a senior at this point, even.

“I’m a ranger. Been ten months, now.” He called back simply, watching to gauge the man’s reaction.

Bo shook his head, maybe a bit disappointed in his brother’s tactics.

“Nidoking, again!”

For a third time, EARTH POWER rattled the ground and exploded around the Excadrill, sediment flying at dangerous velocity. Why switch it up when it was already working?

“You should train more, Cian.”

It was an uncharacteristically mean thing for him to say maybe, and even so, he shouted it across the field, ignoring whatever audience they’d collected.
