[break][break] beside the galarian princess appears the region's head ranger, as bright and exuberant as always. ollie had gone to visit oldale hospital right after the events of the raid, though he'd only been able to pass by Elise Calcifet's room when she was asleep and leave a small note (and a single flower) on her bedside table as a result.

[break][break] when he heard she was out of the hospital, the first thing he did was send her a text to meet up for burgers, eager to catch-up with her.

[break][break] "you hungry? let's go inside!"

[break][break] without waiting, ollie pushes his way into the establishment. there is the sound of small chatter as they enter. burger kingler is as possible as ever, but the brunette reaches out to hold elise with one arm, hand curling around her shoulder, to prevent a passerby from bowling her over. even after the passerby leaves, ollie's hand doesn't quite leave.

[break][break] "so," he said, head tilted, lips twisted into a crooked smile. "what does the royal princess like to have for lunch? hey - wait, you've had a burger before, right?"

[break][break] his words were cut off when there was a sudden explosion. the cracking noise suddenly became all that he could hear — the small cavern filled abruptly with the sound of shattering glass.

[break][break] lars is faster to react than him. the tall blond is grappling for him, tossing them both to the floor to avoid the sudden the shards of ice that explode from the wall. ollie's heart beats loudly in his chest, calloused hands reaching for his best friend's shoulders to stabilize himself as he laid flat against the ground. his eyes were wide.

[break][break] Things have been a little bit awkward since the Christmas party but they'd resolved those issues — well, sort of. Sometimes actions spoke louder than words.

[break][break] Speaking of, PENELOPE LIVY's words seem to bring the simulation to life. The room flowers into a GRASS-TYPE gym, spring blossoming along concrete and trees growing where empty planks previously were. Several cute grass pokemon totter along the sides of the arena, followed by the simulation of several Wyrdeer and Sawsbuck, mimicked by the pokemon that the Head Ranger held so dear.

[break][break] It's not long before the simulated expression of kyle lopez appears, Hoenn's reigning champion. He congratulates them on a job well-done before the portal opens up to lead them to the next step of the simulation.

[break][break] he blinks for a moment, staring at the fading form of boruta maher's back. his head is still throbbing with a hangover, but memories are tangled together, nearly pushed to the surface... until willow atkins sinks into the seat next to him. she's looking at him with softness, her eyes the color of spring, and he feels something in his heart swell at the sight. willow always knew how to calm him down.

"y-yeah, you're right. we should... we should go," ollie says with a nod, gathering the rest of the load into bags and tossing it over his shoulder. last time he came here with illeana reyes, they'd left with nothing. but ollie was stubborn this time, he wasn't willing to go back, to suffer this, without it meaning something.

[break][break] he waits for Eva Morales to settle herself - either also on his dragonite's back, or on her own stead - before they EXTREME SPEED out of the simulation.

[break][break] despite how good ollie seems to be with people, it's always moments like this that make him remember exactly how stupid he is. still, the ranger has no choice but to listen to Genevieve Cromwell confess to him — her words coming out like water as she spills her confession out in front of him.

[break][break] (but he's not — not worthy of wonderful things — only things that hurt him. again and again. a cycle of hurt.)

[break][break] he winces at the reminder of PENELOPE LIVY when genevieve lists of names. her lashes close, and his own flutter as she leans against him, cheek pressed warmly against her hair. if he closes his eyes too, the ginger-tint of her hair can almost remind him of the flaming red of penny's too.

[break][break] a hand reaches over to her back as she begins to sob, warm and sure across her back. he holds her the same way that willow atkins held him all those months ago, crying her heart out to him.

[break][break] "you can. you're a good person genny, better than me." his lips slot into a smile, pressing his lips against her hair. "you deserve someone half as good as you too."
